The story takes place at the renowned private school “Nanahoshi” — also known as the school of the survival of the fittest. The school is famous for its incredibly skilled students and its nationally acclaimed achievements in various extracurricular activities. At the very core of this system, however, is a strict ranking system that is used to manage the students and reduces them to collections of numerical ratings of their abilities, from their intelligence to their looks.

This school has an absolute ruler — a girl called Erika Kagurasaka, leader of the “Urban Lion” faction and holder of the title of “Pride.” With the perilous ambition of defeating her and ascending to the throne as a tyrant, Kana Fujishiro starts his quest from the lowest possible rank…

I'm only writing this review to help others decide if they wanna read this, since no one else has a review here for it. I tried the beginning chapter and read into chapter 2 before dropping it myself, but it may be more your cup of tea than mine.

Caveats: the author wrote HakoMari which was a success, but this series was not - they ran into issues with the publisher or so and the series was essentially canceled around 2014 and only has 2 volumes. This was one of the... more>> factors that made me drop it, but moreso, the writing and story just didn't grab me.

Basic idea is MC is ranked F in a school that goes F to S rank. There's 7 factions, and the secret leaders of each have a title based on a sin, like Pride/Greed/Lust/Sloth/etc. Only the Pride leader Erika revealed her position publicly since she had the confidence to do so and is considered the "strongest" in the school. MC aims to take her and the other 6 leaders down.

To take them down, there's "Rating Battles". Every student has "Ratings" in certain criteria like Looks/Lineage/Athleticism/etc with ratings in each. For example, a pretty girl in MC's F rank class has a B in Looks for being pretty but is dumb and low-ranked in that.

Reading this series reminded me of Classroom of the Elite - main character is a genius and uses others as tools to get ahead in his own plans (all of chapter 1 features him seeing one of his manipulated pawns acting against Erika, for example). There's also certain side characters like a girl who is strangely clingy to the MC and is

revealed to be the Greed leader and essentially seeks an alliance.

I mainly didn't enjoy it since I felt the story moved slowly with a lot of bogged down description, plus I didn't like certain early developments such as the spoiler above. Reading it wasn't interesting, and it reminded me of other mind game stories I read, but many of those (Liar Game, Death Note, Gambling Emperor Zero, etc) grabbed me much sooner and had more engaging games/battles from the getgo. This felt like a lot more exposition and a lot of "tell, don't show" such as the long descriptions of how the systems in the school worked, and it wasn't fun to read.

Another factor was the knowledge that this series was unfinished and unlikely to ever be finished, which hurt my motivation to finish if I already wasn't enjoying it.

Now, all those nitpicks aside though... this might still be a series others can enjoy. I also disliked Classroom of the Elite but know others like that series very much. I think there's definitely others who could enjoy the premise of the story more than I do and enjoy the characters, writing, and plot. <<less
