Likable main character, world is epic in scope, cultivation systems are varied and interesting, everything you'd expect given the author
Lord xue-ying is I eat Tomatoes latest work and at the time of writing this review finished a day or two ago, I'm going to write this with the assumption that most people looking at this book are familiar with his other novels as they are fairly prolific thanks to ren & he-man
Like most of tomatoes works I really enjoyed this, he has in my opinion continually improved his technical skills and in this iteration a lot of the minor things that bothered me in desolate era or swallowed star, (like story arcs dragging on way too far or female characters seemingly enamored with the MC until the end of time just to show his love for his wife, or continuous sudden power ups "breaking through between life and death" constantly) were either extremely minimal or not present at all in this book while simultaneously I thought that he managed to put in more scenes that were genuinely emotionally evocative and very deftly moved the story along
As for the story itself (relative to his other works) I thought the main character was interesting, he took a different path than I thought he would at the beginning, I was sad there weren't any standout side characters like the great bebe and that tomato still hasn't really managed to use the main heroine very well throughout the story but overall i'd say regardless of technical differences the story itself is at least as good as desolate era though maybe not quite as memorable as stellar or coiling dragon (though thats probably entirely bias since they were my first and second chinese ln's) overall it's a very enjoyable read and only seemed to drag a bit in one or two parts
Translation quality isn't too bad, just the usual typos and grammatical errors with gender and names. MC is a bit of a sap but hard working but after receiving his Ultimate Arts from Master drops in IQ immensely despite being a supposed genius. Makes ridiculously s*upid decisions by overestimating himself. Yes, his combat level can mean he can take down higher levelled opponents but forgets about the difference in Laws and ends up nearly dying repeatedly resulting in plot armour saves that coincidental power him up further which in turn makes him even dumber. This is actually after he's supposedly had multiple epiphanies regarding his low realm and it's limitations blah.
He hears that his father in law is in dire straits in a danger zone trapped by 3 Powerful Existences 2 of which are at Paragon level and two others who are peak rank 4 world deities who'd been his team mates but now turned on him because of loot. Decides to go rescue him with his recently ranked up to 4 wife and himself when he's still just a rank 3 but with rank 4 strength. Yeah just the two of them. Despite knowing the dangers of the region as well as the number and strengths of the enemies. Crazy and nonsensical decision. Danger Zone is known to have even endanger his Teacher who's one of the peak existences in the universe FFS!
And then literally minutes after returning safely to his Teacher he makes yet another ridiculously s*upid decision to go the Abyss to rescue the guy from tens of thousands of years ago. Doesn't spend time trying to level up a bit more because you know the region itself wants to kill him because he's an Outsider, nope, he just launches himself headfirst even though the guy has been tortured for so long and most likely dead but hey hoo...
His Teacher assigns him a new role despite abandoning his previous one like the spoilt little twat he is. He's to manage the Assassin business for an entire prefecture area, which he never once does, he just uses their info network. So off he pops with his Master Assassin robe into the Abyss. And then takes down two demons in the most ridiculous assassinations EVER. I'm no professional killer but considering the hostile environment most people would use stealth and subterfuge before attacking at full force in order to end the fight as quickly as possible and then leave immediately. In and out, job done. That's the sensible approach right?
In his dumb arrogance he actually struts about out in the open through the different levels, announces his arrival and then attacks them head on, after a nice bit of chitchat of course, wouldn't want the target to not have the time to call for help or anything. Which they do, obviously. BOTH times, they did.
The second fight was just beyond idiotic. He takes so long to kill him that he basically ends up exposing himself and his lack of level. As Tavern Master he's supposedly meant to be True God level but In the end of the day he's just rank 3 plus he can't use his deity powers as it'll set off the world will. Basically reveals his severe lack of planning due to his ret*rded arrogance. Could've brought along treasures to trap and seal space etc to make up for the loss of his Mirage abilities. Ends up struggling needlessly, almost allows the target to escape, target reinforcements arrive so only then decides he has to hurry up and kill him with an OP strike. Seriously? Why didn't he use that full strength attack straight away? Why struggle for so long and end up exposing your identity? He knows the true body is elsewhere for crying out loud. You're in the frikkin ABYSS FFS! Most s*upidest assassin EVER. Cue the entire Abyss agros and he has to fight his way out in a desperate dungeon escape. What a surprise. No doubt he'll get some ridiculous level up of his Willpower or body skills. Annoyingly predictable.
I'm speechless. I just read on to the next volume after he loses his parents, brother and uncle to old age because they aren't talented enough to transcend, he freaks out and decides to leave the cosmos to search for treasure to help his wife and kids transcend because she's nearing her limit too because she reincarnated. Yes, that's right, he leaves them alone without any avatars remaining to go search and promises to return before the end of the epoch, approx trillion years time. Bearing in mind she'd have to spend most of it in his Crimson place under slowed time to extend her life whilst waiting for his return.
Imagine finding out your significant other has ten years left to live so you decide to leave the country searching for fairies, magicians and alchemists to cure the terminal disease and promising to return before the end of the world. But it's okay as there's a time slowing chamber they can go live in for x amount years whilst your off chasing fantasies. Yes it's the loony bin time!
I just can't get behind this at all. They're all cultivators, they spend 99% of their time alone in a room cultivating. Even when he had all his avatars there'd be ridiculous lengths of time where his family wouldn't see hide of hair of him or an avatar. It's so hypocritical to leave for a trillion years when she's just got a billion left before death. Plus there's no proof such treasures even exist because otherwise wouldn't everybody and their poodle be transcending otherwise? Wouldn't everywhere be overpopulated with True Gods? Absolute BS plot line. This kind of mentality would definitely negatively affect his Dao heart, inability to let go... Should've found a better reason for him to leave prematurely and alone.
