i invested like nearly the entire day obsessively mtling this novel, and this unhinged rant review is simultaneously a byproduct and a culmination of that hyper fixation, and an attempt to regain any semblance of control robbed from me after encountering this novel.

OH MY f*ckS, THIS NOVEL IS CRAZY.

As mentioned in the reviews by kcis and Ecirteab, this novel will f*ck U UP + give u terminal cancer, but lemme just say, that novel description is hella misleading. Although this novel had it's flaws, the plot twist at... more>> the end had my jaw hanging out in the 8th circle of hell. embarrassingly, I may have also shed some tears ;-;.

The beginning starts off innocently like the many novels of it's genre, we get lil comedic moments that often come with the gender bender trope (like FL undressing infront of ML cuz she thinks they're both girls). But very slowly things start happening, and we don't know WHY. Then things get draggy and IMO, there were wayyy too many filler chapters, but its just my imo. Around this time is also when you'll contemplate dropping the novel or pausing it (i felt the urge too), but trust me- power through and finish it!! The ending will def explain everything. Don't try to skip any chapters, because the author will just randomly sneak in bombshells without any prior warning.

this is a spoiler for all the people with trust issues that can't commit to a novel before they know exactly what's gonna happen: warning, I will reveal most of the plot twist, so open with caution. (But honestly same lol)

BASICALLY:

some context:

    • legitimate sis is the ml/aforementioned crown prince in the novel desc, and also assumes another identity of another man that FL marries due to the sister's orders.
    • (so basically, ML is legitimate sis, right? FL falls in love with legitimate sis, but still hates the origi ML bcs of the stuff that happen last life. but the ML as the legitimate sis pushes her away and makes her marry a commoner man- who surprise- is the ML again ;-; but dw ML changes masks so FL doesnt find out till like wayy after
    • the legitimate sister also rebirthed, not only fl. So ML is the crown prince who 'mistreated' FL from last life.

plot twist:

    • after everything happens, we eventualy find out that FL is not mentally ok, ever since her last life also.
    • apparently she ever since last life, she gets excited by blood and harming ppl. Like she killed her concubine sister and biological mother at one point? Or she tortures them really bad - dw no graphic descriptions, it's just stated.

in the last life:

    • male lead is the only one who challenged her twisted logic and even tried to take care of her
    • (albeit he did eventually lock her in the palace and sort of smothered her with like a stifling love that made her gradually resent him.)
    • male lead also falls for fl, and she reciprocates it as said in the desc. But it's hinted that FL actually falls in love with the ML as legitimate sis in the last life.
    • so in an attempt to make FL fall for his male identity as crown prince/emperor, and stop her feelings for him as the legitimate sis, ML hypnotizes her.
    • he implants false memories in her, making her hate the legitimate sis for stuff that happened in the past - e.g. One memory is that fl's concubine mom originally dies in childbirth bcs legitimate sis didn't inv doctors to save her on time, thus spurring fl's hate for legitimate sis after rebirth. But we find out later on, that fl's twisted desires actually led to her killing her own concubine mother (or sth like that), and ML implanted the memories after in an attempt to make her hate the legitimate sis and forget her past indiscretions.
    • so it's not even clear if FL likes the crown prince in the past life, or she loved the legitimate sis? Since male lead tampered with her memories.

in this life:

    • eventually, FL starts regaining some memories? (I think idk lol I was kinda getting bored from the filler chappies lol) surprise surprise, she HATES ML as the crown prince. She constantly pines for the sister to come back.
    • (altho, it didn't stop them from making another baby tho ;-;)
    • but for the FINALE- THE plot twist that made me SCREAM: WE FIND OUT THAT FL KILLS ML AND TURNS HIM INTO A DOLL!!!!!!! she turns ML into a doll but keeps him in the form of the legitimate sister. Shes full on delulu atp, talking to the doll, cuddling, kissing, applying makeup on the taxidermied sister.
    • her crazy person justification is that she keeps ML as the legitimate sis, so he can never return back to the crown prince/emperor form and disappoint her.
    • most importantly: she does it after all their kids are born, so we get a scene of the son condeming the mother for being crazy, and FL tried to defend herself saying ML willingly did it/scarificed himself.
    • btw, FL doesnt rlly feel any affection for the daughter cuz she was conceived after FL found out male lead's identity, so she sees the daughter as a parasite and doesn't care if she miscarries the baby. In comparison, FL loves the son cs altho he was concieved with ML as Wang Cong, ML as the sis says it's "their" baby.

my thots:

    • i cried bcs even after everyth male lead did, if u kinda think abt it, he endured her physical abuse in the past life bcs of his love for her. Plus everything he did this time was bcs of his love forher. Not saying hes completely blamless, but if u think abt it, her rebirth was also bcs of his prayers for her to be reborn.
    • plus the ML always kinda knew that there was a chance of her killing him in both last + this life. So in this life when they finally had kids, he prepared everything for his son to succeed him earlier as emperor, including writing a book w/ like all the corrupt officials and blackmail to assist the son in governing the court. Made me ugly sob knowing that male lead was essentially preparing for his own early death, but he still stayed with FL throughout : ((
    • anyways, in a way, both ML and FL are scummy, the relationship is physically + mentally abusive and mega toxic. I jus feel bad for the son and daughter : (
    • theres a REASON why there's not a Male Yandere tag, and just a general Yandere tag. FL is her own brand of crazy, she's literally the poster child of 'don't stick ur d*ck in crazy'.

Much like said by kcis, I also gave this novel 4 stars simply because it was so memorable (not in a good way) and how all the seemingly random story elements came together with the plot twist at the end. It's almost like the author concealed traps/hints throughout the novel, but only towards the end is the hypothetical trap all triggered at once, does everything click into place. (I legit felt like that one charlie day meme trying to theorize wtf was going on) This novel's re-read value for me is like -1000, but it'll def stay on my mind for a very long time. <<less

This story... I can't figure out how to describe and rate it.
It's not badly written, it has a lot of confusing things but overall you can understand it and the translation is good, apart from a few too many repetitions (reading "legitimate sister" for the third time in the same sentence starts to get heavy), but probably it's due to the wattpad style of the story itself.
The protagonists... well, they are the classic Chinese historical novel protagonists; the MC is a white lotus, she thinks a lot but does nothing but cry and hope that fate or someone else will solve the problems for her; the ML is literally a chestnut hedgehog between the buttocks, its only quality is to be powerful and beautiful, all the rest not received. More and more of FL however, which has only beauty from her (being incompetent).
all the others are jokers, they have no purpose in their life other than to throw a spanner in MC's works and make a fool of themselves with senseless jealousy.

Up to here, everything is normal, there would be nothing different from hundreds of other novels of the same type; but what leaves me shocked is that often and willingly it is written as if it were an R-15 story, with s*xual innuendos and a continuous pressure on the incredible beauty and sensuality of the protagonist.
Which would be normal, except that the aforementioned protagonist IS 10 YEARS OLD GIRL.

TEN D*MNED YEARS.

I may be too old, but I think 10-year-old girls should fight each other over who has the prettiest dress or the coolest toy, or who's going to eat the slice of cake with the most strawberries on it.
Don't go to war to find a husband and destroy the honor and lives of your peers, even sisters.
And above all, don't be portrayed as sexy as they bleed from pins hidden in the dress.
WTF.

5/5 Story, but be warned....

Take the psychological tag seriously.

Do no trust the narrator.

Just keep in mind this one thing: Xi Xian only loves Sister Xi Heng.

She does not love Lu Zongheng or Wang Cong or anyone else. She truly, only, deeply loves Xi Heng and dotes on her son. Even her daughter cannot compare.

Xi Heng is the most precious thing in her life.

The translation splits the chapters into parts btw, so Chapter 34 for example is just part of chapter 12.

I haven't finished reading it but man is this story terrifying. In a way, it really reminds me of "If You Are A Dodder Flower". The MC is weak, but her writing is so captivating, it clearly displays her psychology, how fearful she is of her husband from her previous life, and how she wants to escape but ... more>>

She's traumatized from their toxic relationship in the past. Heck, just seeing him made her bite her tongue until it bled and she fainted.

She was not forced to be in a relationship in her past life, and she did seem to hold affection for him but their circumstances were just so unfavorable, since as Emperor, her husband had a harem after all (even if he didn't want to and disbanded it for her but his obsessiveness and lack of communication didn't really help). And she really couldn't blossom and live carefree in the harem, with her family support gone and only being an illegitimate daughter from an outside mistress. She calls herself vicious and impure, because she also became a schemer in the past. The Emperor always knew her actions against his other concubines but he never punished her though.

It seemed like he really did only ever love her, but he didn't have the maturity yet to let her be free and to give her children because of his possessiveness (she was quite frail too in the past life). From the text, it sounded like she felt insecure with her relationship with the Emperor, sometimes she'd even resort to slapping the Emperor because her emotions were frayed (he never laid a hand on her though). So with that past history, she didn't want to be involved in another toxic and passionate tango with him, even if she held affection for the Emperor, she wouldn't mind just being an ordinary woman married to a man she doesn't love in her reborn life.

They even said in the text that she's suffering from mental illness, while still only being a young girl. But she seems to be healing and she's getting a closer bond to her sister, who she acknowledged she misunderstood in her previous life. It doesn't help that she, doesn't really know everything happening around her, so she can only misinterpret some things. And she really is weak, psychologically, which isn't a bad thing in a character in my opinion. The story isn't a cliche, Mary Sue, shojo romance, the yandere character, really is frightening instead of just childishly possessive/abusive, and it's understandable why the MC is the way she is.

The ages are not really clear too, it's probably a Chinese to English issue, but even after she had her hairpin ceremony (which usually happens when a girl is 15), she gets called a "girl over 10 years old", someone who is 20 could also be called a "girl over 10 years old", so it's really imprecise, especially since the flow of time is not really explained well, i.e. How long has it been since she started living in her clan? Years seem to pass by without any acknowledgement, it makes reading the story so much more nerve-wracking and elusive.

O M G no the story was nothing like what I expected. Prepare for some mindf*ckery in the later chapters. The MC is not what she appears to be. The love interest's characterization is different from what you'd initially expect. This story is worth the read just for the terrific reveal. It creeped so slowly, hints were present in the background, but even when I thought something fishy was going on, I still couldn't completely grasp it.

If you're expecting a sweet love story I suggest you don't even start this novel. The summary makes it far more comedic than it really is when in fact the story is much darker in tone and gets progressively darker throughout the story.

The unrealiable narrator tag is there for a reason and I'm not even sure I personally classify this as a romance. It's hard to discuss this story without spoiling but the dynamics are not as clear cut as they seem and this is definitely not the typical cliche... more>> domineering emperor X weak woman novel.

I think this novel is a decent psychological novel but I don't quite like the setup of MC being an unreliable narrator because we don't get the clues of her being unreliable until the truth gets revealed proper. In the end I found Xi Xian to be very frustrating to read from but I think that's the point. <<less

Do not trust the narrator. It’ll mess you up. The psychosis of the story gave me a headache, and its a tragedy.

I gave this a four star because it can get kind of confusing (ehem narrator) and the truth really only comes to light through other character’s tidbit of information. It’s not something I’ll read again but this will definitely be one of those story that will stick in my head for a long time.

This is a waste of time, horrible, I just read it because I couldn't find anything better, I thought it would improve, but nothing changed, I've never seen a protagonist as incompetent and s*upid as this one, she just keeps crying and nothing changed in the story, If ML hadn't been reborn too, this donkey would have died at the beginning of the story.
