Trash of the Count’s Family

When I opened my eyes, I was inside a novel.

[The Birth of a Hero].

[The Birth of a Hero] was a novel focused on the adventures of the main character, Choi Han, a high school boy who was transported to a different dimension from Earth, along with the birth of the numerous heroes of the continent.

I became a part of that novel as the tr*sh of the Count’s family, the family that oversaw the territory where the first village that Choi Han visits is located.

The problem is that Choi Han becomes twisted after that village, and everyone in it, is destroyed by assassins.

The bigger problem is the fact that this s*upid tr*sh who I’ve become doesn’t know about what happened in the village and messes with Choi Han, only to get beaten to a pulp.

“…This is going to be a headache.”

I feel like something serious has happened to me.

But it was worth trying to make this my new life.

I encountered it on September 2020, and it was to me like the light in the middle of darkness. I was incredibly bored of otome isekai stories, and was delighted to find a Korean reincarnation manhwa that wasn't romance and had a male protagonist. I enjoyed the story so much but the chapters tend to drag on so after a hundred chapters, reading it becomes a chore. I do remember stopping a few times, needing a break, but not wanting to drop it because of how dear it had been... more>> to me.

It's a light-hearted story based on a typical premise. Man gets reincarnated as a rich nobleman with a bad fate so he wishes to avoid it and lead a long and peaceful life by the countryside or become rich. It's simplistic and common premise, especially in the korean isekai circle.

As the novel's protagonist, Kim Rok Soo, now Cale Henituse, inevitably acts and gains the reputation of a hero and a savior all the while arguing claiming that his goal is being a slacker. Sure, Cale, sure. The characters act like NPCs in a game who spill out their pitiful life story with Cale always having to help them because he has the means to do so and because he's too compassionate for his own good.

It's wish-fulfillment fantasy, and I like that about it.

That said, the pattern does tend to get boring after a few chapters, especially after the Battle of Henituse. The troubles are never-ending and the same thing's going to happen anyways. Cale's going to win. I must admit, the story peaked for me when he became the commander. It's like everything else led up to this moment and I live for it. Go cough blood, save the continent and make us sad and proud at the same time, you self-sacrificing bastard! The White Star's a third-rate but effectively irritating villain. I don't even find him worth mentioning. For a guy who lived for so long, he sure is s*upid. The plans he made are easy to foil, yet they're never ending, akin to untangling coiled hair. He's like a c*ckroach. You squash him for how many times yet he remains alive with another plan set in motion. I personally don't like villains like him but his character traits are what makes him an effective villain that fits within TCF's story. The story reached peak mediocrity when it focused on the battle against the White Star. It transformed into a good vs evil fight without leaving any moral ambiguity for the villain. It's also a bit scary how the story demonizes bad guys, instead of looking at their human side. They only become good once they go to Cale's side. Hmm, is it just me or is there a weird balance here?

Sure there's still the power-ups, the same lovable cast and all the things I adore about it but the fight with the White Star didn't matter to me that much.

As for the side characters, they tend to get tossed aside when they aren't needed for missions and during their off time, they get little to no developments. There's a severe lack of character development in the emotional aspect. Their relationships with each other seem rather simple. There's way too many characters, with too little screen-time. They don't have their own story role, and they fail to leave a mark because the author kept on reusing the same old trope and character introduction pattern. They're all going to become Cale's allies anyways. It's very shonen-y in the aspect that during their screen time, they get a problem and a power-up. I also haven't seen any disagreements between the main Cale gang, and there's little to no moral dilemma in the story. Though it certainly doesn't lack characters that need Cale's help. I like the story, but I'm not blind to its flaws. I'd have to dumb myself down over the course of a few days before I can reread it. The writing is a bit of a problem for me with how short and brief the sentences are. It doesn't flow quite well when you read it, it's rather static. Especially when it's revealing important information. The fights are also difficult to read. The way the author mentions character names over and over instead of using pronouns irks me. Plus, some adjectives and descriptions tend to get repetitive. For example, benign smile, vicious, etc. But there is good reason why it is popular. The beginning was fun with all the world-building details like The Forest of Darkness, the Fog Cat Tribe, the transmigrator Choi Han, the secret assassin butler Ron, his equally vicious son Beacrox, the ancient powers. Not to mention, how weirdly satisfying it is to find out that xx is related to another person

I'm a sucker for found-family stories so this one was right up my alley. The misunderstandings surrounding Cale was cute to watch as well and his reactions to it. Cale's personality was also a breath of fresh air seeing as how he wants to live as a slacker and works hard now to achieve it. Yet it only gets further away from him; it's a running gag in the story. Another point is his self-sacrificing character and how he always coughs up blood, how worried everyone else is about him and how much he plays it down because he has the vitality of the heart. Cale has a hella thick plot armour. The world he lives in isn't that dangerous. For him, at least.
Spoiler
[collapse]
And just when you think he's going to die due to a secret power from his other world, Flicker, in typical TCF fashion, a farming dragon who became fond of him and is now considered his ally links his broken plate, effectively saving him.

My reader heart is happy, but the sad*st in me is shaking its head. So far, there'd been no deaths despite how intense the battles are. Why, you say? Why of course, plot armor! The author uses deus ex machina a lot in the guise of hidden information that is only revealed at the moment. Surprise! The story's tension comes from information that has been withheld. Weirdly enough, it's an effective strategy at keeping my attention. Not to mention, in the first place, the author revealed very little information, which helps it all fit nicely. What seems to be simple at first glance actually has a very complicated history behind it. Cale is also very dismissive of the clues he gets until it's right at his face which takes off the attention from the information he just read.

My advice to future readers is don't take anything at face value!

Yet all of these points are exactly why the story is so lovable to many of us. It's a simple read, yet the world-building gives it its own unique flair. The whole cast of unique characters with their own special powers continually add up to form an ever expanding Cale Protection Squad, with Raon and Choi Han being the leader.

It's biggest flaw is the lack of story themes, which is why the story lacks depth.

Overall, I think it's a good story that never quite reached its full potential because of how the story dragged on owing to its lack of character development. It felt like Cale and the gang vs the same old villains except they have different powers so we have to use other characters and we get new powers and info about the big bad villain and his plans, yey. It's probably what people call a power-up fantasy, idk. <<less

This is a good series, but nothing really stands out as great to me. The reason it has such a high readership is because it's a story that appeals to both men and women. The story itself kinda above average. This is a scheming protagonist transmigrates into a villains body who proceeds to reform his villainous ways, becomes OP, and dreams about living a lazy life.

Honestly, I haven't been really interested in the story once. Everything is too simple for the protagonist. It's only around chapter 200 that he starts... more>> fighting enemies capable of challenging him at all.

The translation is about a 3/5 stars. There are glaring errors that don't get corrected until much later in the series telling you one thing, then gets a completely different translation 50 chapters later. I am convinced this is a translation error. This happens frequently. <<less

So the story follows a rather bland trend. The plot is just a rehash, a rinse and repeat of events, which solely lengthens the word count. Which means, numerous chapters follow a trend of repeating phrases/sentences from prior chapters where the MC shows little character growth.

On the other side, the side characters is where this story truly shines. Unfortunately, the author sucks at foreshadowing, so when a new arc starts, lengthen the novel, it appears to come out of nowhere. Honestly, at this point, why can't he end the White... more>> Star arc? I don't need to read over 1.5 million words just to get there.

Overall, with out spoilers, the main plot is a giant mess. Its as if the author gets random ideas and throws it into the main plot with out much care in incorporating it properly. Repeat this over a few 100k words, and you get a convoluted arching plot which involves gods potentially being first lifers, demons working with a immortal reincarnator and side characters suddenly gaining an overly epic backstory.

Rating: 3/5

  • Story is only good till he gains his wind attribute ancient power.

Amazing I love the MC and the dragon so much Raon is so cute I want to just pinch his cheeks. Though some don’t like the way the MC narrates what he doing or about to do, I like it and it shows just how far he’s thinking ahead for himself and his friends/ family. Even for the story being so long it doesn’t have bad speed everything’s done pretty well and not dragged while the story also flows nicely and not choppy with the new goals or plans changing.

Characters: 9/10

I love all characters, especially the main, they are all well written and not one dimensional. Although I think some lack certain aspects, that's why it's not a 10. I think some characters, like Lock, deserve more development.

Plot: 10/10

... more>> It may seem like cliche but it's not. I think the pace is not fast or slow, just right. And everything happens for a reason; everything is connected. I don't think there is plot holes? I've reread it many times and don't see one.

Worldbuilding: 9/10

The worldbuilding is great, one of the best I've seen even. It's just that I don't understand some things that's why it's not 10. Well aside from some confusing things, I can say it's almost perfect.

Writing: 8/10

Hmm... I personally like the writing style of the author. Though sometimes the settings made me confused, it's still good for me. And I love the sound effect, it adds charm to the story. I sometimes even make the sound while reading, hehe.

I love almost everything to this story, that's all I can say. To those hesitating to read this or have dropped this, please give this story a chance. <<less

Never thought a book can stay interesting for so long, I fully expected to drop it but I couldn't stop reading until I caught up with all there is, safe to say this is my favorite webnovel.

I was content with the story before it started dealing with Kim Roksoo's past on earth but after that it only became better and better, don't let the number of chapters discourage you from picking this up it's absolutely worth it.

I loved this at first. Isekai, underestimated MC, and with no romantic affiliations to a lot of women. There were loyal servants, friends and the MC met a lot of prominent figures.

However as the story progressed, the MC's character "wavered". There were a lot of changes going on with him. The way people would react around him became predictable, and I felt like their characters became inconsistent too. That was why I stopped reading this.

Anyway, this is only my opinion and I am not trying to discourage potential readers. I... more>> am just giving an honest feedback.

So in short, it had a good start but it lacked consistency as it went on. <<less

All I have to say is, THIS IS ONE HELLUVA NOVEL. I like every aspect about it. The characters are amazing and there is no 'useless' characters. And Cale (mc) is my favorite protagonist ever. His character in itself is very charismatic. I will not say anything abt cuz it feels everything would be a spoiler. And everyone's reaction every time Cale coughs up blood or faint is just precious. This is one of the best novels I have ever read. And I can assure u that u will not... more>> regret reading this.

One thing I love about this novel is how the author explains all the events in the story. Like why he was transmigrated, how does he remember everything, why he is so cold and wants a slacker life and the in-depth characterization is what draws me to this. Everything is not about plot Armour. Cale always thinks 2-step before because he IS smart, that's his specialty. To the peeps who rated it 2 and 3 stars, you should've read the story a little more in depth to actually like the story. A lot of people dropped it so early on that they couldn't get what makes the novel so good. I can only say that u missed out on a great novel.

Maybe I'm being rude and biased but I really really love this novel ❤🤍 <<less

Idk what to say I just love this sm even tho im not exactly a novel reader😆 I read the manhwa first then found out theres novel the manhwa is so good so I proceed to the novel and its still so good✋😍 well some ppl gives low rating and state why, and I understand that but for me, the part that some ppl dont like I actually like it very much I dont complain for it, idk how to say but to me its like its own charm and... more>> that make it good for me😚 hahhaha I love cale when he say hes not a 'good' person when hes done so many good deed and gives excuse that he do that not cause hes a good person lol, and he keep saying hes gonna live a slaker life and rolling on bed for 50 years when the next second he do is protect ppl and keep putting himself on line when he say 'i wont do anything to put myself in danger' sigh.. But thats why I like abt him tho, the character is well developed and the villainis srsly amazing, the only thing I dont like is probably theres too many character I need to remember (my brain is shitty I srsly cant remember humans name😶) <<less

This novel is a perfect 5/10 and because of that I can't bring myself into reading it, specialty because it just became boring after a while. This is really sad because I really liked this novel and even thought of it as the better version of The Novel's extra where the MC is not dumb.

First let's talk about the positives of this novel:

  • MC is transported into a world that he have a previous knowledge without any reason for why he was there of even if he died in his previous world or not, but after he realizes where he is he quickly start planning how do survive in the world manipulating everything around him to create a safe place for him to stay.
  • The plot and world building are not that bad, as the information that the MC have is limited so after a point he needs to explore new places to know how to better progress in the world. As such how everything comes into place is very well executed most of the time and you really don't have many questions of why they are going into certain places or doing certain things.
  • The side characters are interesting to a point but I can say that when they appeared everyone had their own personality. They are not left behind as the story goes on and even some of their personality are changed, although not by much. Each character have their own role in the story, at least until where I am after all I only stopped around chapter 259 of almost 700 right now.
Now the bad:

  • The author is not consistent with the MC. As we read the story the MC thinks one thing, says another that can even contradict what he thought and then do something else that is not in line with both beforehand and even end up thinking 'why the hell I'm doing this?'. This would be fine if it was properly developed or even if someone would get under his skin and call out the his bullsh**, but we don't have someone like that and this problem isn't even developed by the writhing. And for me the only reason why the author does that is because otherwise the story would end or he would need to actually wrote a character arc for the MC and we can't have that, even if it's already more than two years in the story AND THERE WAS A f***ING WAR (where most people didn't die or even got any serious consequences..... Thanks author <- sarcasm).
  • Another thing that need to be mentioned is the fact that the MC got a power that heals himself and make him be in the peak (fiscally) all the time and instead of using it to train and got a better body to face the problems that will apear later, he literally does nothing and only survives because of luck (or a dragon, whatever you want to call it). It would be one thing if he doesn't want to be in the battlefield and only manipulate things in the dark but he almost never does it and as such is dumb how he always complains about his body but don't do anything to change it. Later the author even gives him a power up because he realized how far behind in power level he is compared to others and didn't want to change MC's personality from "I'm lazy and don't want to do anything + I'm always complaining when I'm doing/after I do something".
  • The author spend too much time describing irrelevant things than actually developing the plot and when it get to the action it's poorly handled. I don't have a problem with quick fight scenes with only few moves deciding the course of the fight, but you can only take so much as you spend time with unnecessary repetition and bad/unnecessary descriptions that could be cut by half and nothing would be lost.
  • Most of the time it looks like the side character can't think for themselves, or better yet, the side character are very easily manipulated my the MC because of their misconceptions in relation to him and that misconceptions are never clear up and never will be as such no matter what he does there is always a excuse that they are waiting from him to say so they can say that the MC is a good person. Even the one character that was able to see that most of the times the MC was doing things for his own benefit (the guy also only cared about his own benefit and dind't care about the MC unless he would gain some profit from th interaction) falls in this category as he too end up seeing the MC as a 'saint' or something close to it like everyone else. The interactions in this work are very weird.
  • This last point is not directed at the novel but to the web comic. As I was reading it I got the impression that this story is made for fujoshis. Almost all the characters looks feminine and most the ones that are actually females characters don't dress like women or have a woman's physique. The only one until now that looks like a woman in the comic is Rosalyn and if you go to sites that have the comic you will see people commenting about how it have too much 'yaoi potencial' in it. There is no problem if that's what you like but this is not my cup of tea so this is a minus for me and I don't believe the artist would take this angle out of nowhere. Interpret this as you like.
As you can see I had quite a lot to say, but I still stand by my score. The novel is not bad and I really wanted to like it, but in the end it just became boring. Most of the problems that the MC faces is because he's not trying to resolve a bigger problem and because he want to spend most of the time doing nothing just show to me that if he really started training/going after the bigger problem from the very beginning... more>> or even after his first year in that world most of the dificultes would have been resolved more easily but because the author needs to create tension it end up just being artificial to me. You can say that around the time I stopped reading the MC became more active in trying to resolve the bigger problems but to me it looks more like the plot forced him to be like that and he really didn't develop into that position and even if later he became a better character most of the other problems still exist and my interest in the story is already lost at this point anyway. <<less

Is a very entertaining novel so I will keep the review short. It only has one major problem. Things get repetitive real quickly and after a few hundred chapters is just get irritating because even idiots can notice these fillers that keep doing the same thing. Is only fun for a bit. You should stop after maybe 300-400 chapter. After that there is really no point to read it anymore and waste your time on it. Unless you have tons of time to waste of course then be my guest.

I definitely recommend this novel!

The MC, Cale (kim rok soo), is neither a saint nor an evil overlord. He's a morally gray character who is cold-hearted to his enemies but will rush to help a friend. But his main goal is always to become a slacker lol. What I really liked about this novel is that Cale is strong, but not op, since his powers grow at a realistic pace, ... more>>

And then there are the side characters, who are all unique and properly built upon throughout the story. Real character developments occur, and interactions are realistic and entertaining.

My personal favorites are:

This novel also incorporates Cale's past world (which isn't like our world just so you know) into the plot, and some powers and characters from there come into play. Which was pretty cool considering all the isekaied highschooler/businessman I've seen lately.

There are lots of amazing battles too, however, the author tends to focus on 'what's going on in the fights' rather than the 'flash bang cool finisher moves' (idk how to explain it well). It's still pretty epic, but some readers consider it as a drawback.

This is just my personal opinion, but I really like how there isn't any romance and it's all fluffy family and friends so far. For people who are looking to read stories with romance, this might not be the best choice for you.

If you're interested in this novel, try reading a few hundred chapters before forming a solid opinion, since there are a lot of key elements of the story that get introduced later on and characters that really grow on you over time.

Seriously, try it! <<less

Allright after I reading it past 482chp I decided to stop reading. Why?

Its because this novel is marvelous, I really liked how cale and friends have had to faced numerous events, how cale is getting stronger even tho he just collected ancient power in order not to be beaten to pulp by Choi Han and have a slacker life. And how cale treat the children hong, on and raon is adorable, cale is type he is saying he will not help you but then he'll vome back with a plan... more>> to rescue you (yep he is Tsundere). And I really like how he is afraid (sometimes) of the father-son duo and choi han even tho they have different mind to cale.
