Alternative title: “The Three-Year Mark Has Passed, Welcome Back to the Capital, the Boss of the Wealthy Idlers!”

Three years ago, Yun Fuyi, a notorious figure among the capital’s wealthy idlers, was ambushed while accompanying her parents on a mission and fell off a cliff, only to be saved by villagers at the bottom of the mountain.

Three years later, she returned to the capital with her parents.

Yun Fuyi: “The three-year mark has passed. Today, I return to the capital, and I will make sure certain people know that I possess both strength and means.”

The once carefree wealthy idlers, who had finally enjoyed three years of peace: “Why on earth did you provoke her in the first place?!”

This is a lighthearted story featuring a strong and capable female lead who faces off against a refined and noble male lead who turns into a love-struck fool around her. Enjoy reading!

Whenever I see a notification for a new novel by Butterfly, I can’t help but get excited, like my heart is soaring along on Butterfly's wings. I'm eagerly following this novel, which already feels like it's going to be another masterpiece. A huge thank you to the translator, Koffeam, for making this possible! I tried reading the raw version (as I’m one of those impatient binge-readers!), but machine translations just don’t do ancient drama justice. So, THANK YOU, Koffeam!

One of the things I love most about Butterfly's novels is the... more>> depth of the protagonists' minds. They always understand how the world works and know how to navigate it. It’s great to see characters who have grown and learned from their experiences, becoming who they are by the time the story starts. And of course, I adore how the MC and those around her often leave everyone else speechless with their antics or with their acceptance and love for the MC.

I’ll be checking in every four days to enjoy the completed chapters! <<less

I'm genuinely surprised I don't like this. I don't know what's going on. I even like the one that most people don't like I think that she wrote with like the gender dynamics being switched. But this one is just quite boring. It's like all of the things that she is good at doing and she's written like similar stories before but this one is with less set up and I would say slightly worse written. Like not enough set up like not enough description like not enough character. Not... more>> enough just not enough like there's just not enough. It feels dry and it feels stale and it feels one note. Like I can't care that that guy likes her because I don't know why he likes her. I can suspect that she did good things for them but she can't even remember them much less it being explained to us. So for like over 20 chapters we're seeing him obviously like her and do things outside of his position to be close to her not extremely so but still In a way that you're like okay but why do I not care about this? Because we don't know why he likes her. We don't. We can guess but that doesn't give us emotional feelings. We don't emotionally feel compelled to root them on. At least for me. As a reader. Because the setup is not there. This is very bare bones in my opinion. The transitions are also a non-existent. I feel like sometimes she will just say a sentence I don't know if the translation but it's just like a sentence and that's the transition from one scene to the next. It's not enough there's just not enough description. It's just unfortunately lacking even though this is my favorite author. It's missing it's unique charm and it's missing unique characters and it's missing its unique descriptions. It's just missing something and it's really boring. It's so unfortunate. <<less

I love the prince! I love the prince! I love the prince! Important things should be said three times.

This story was such a treat! The perfect blend of romance and intrigue. The characters were well-crafted and so likeable. I like that while our FL has the reputation of being an idler, because she likes participating in various leisure activities and hanging out with her friends, she’s never idle when people need help. It’s fun to see how righteous, heroic and kind she is to those who deserve it and how... more>> she fearlessly and cleverly defeats people with bad intentions.
Spoiler

I adore the fact that the royal family each have their own memory of a time she helped them out that she herself doesn’t even remember because she’s so used to doing kind deeds.

. As mentioned above, I love the prince and just how in love he is with the FL. I was amused to see the silent efforts he made to impress the FL before he made his feelings clear and utterly delighted to see just how doting he could be when he finally confessed. I appreciated how both his parents were doing their best to help him win his crush over lol. Love seeing supportive and involved parents! It doesn’t happen often in these novels. The other side characters were also very charming.

Compared to other historical novels by this author, the plot wasn’t as complicated as it usually is but I am okay with that. I’m not sure if it’s just me but I feel like starting from Ascending, Do Not Disturb, she’s writing more lighthearted stories? In any case, whichever way she chooses to write, Butterfly’s Shadow Beneath the Moon is undoubtedly a genius and I’d like to thank her again for another fantastic read. ❤️ <<less

I normally love this author's work, the light hearted ones as well as the more serious novels. I'm surprised that I am losing interest after 30 chapters and moving to another novel.

There are some humourous moments, for example in the way the emperor manipulates his ministers (for the greater good).

I feel like the main issue is that there is no tension in the book. The heroine has no great obstacles to overcome.

The antagonist seems to pose very little threat. They seem to have the planning ability of a 10 year... more>> old, and all their plots are easily thwarted by our heroine, most of the time before it even starts. His accomplices are captured easily. He has no real power. (How I love the tension the cat and mouse games in The Grand Princess. There is none of this here.)

Besides this, everything comes too easily to the FL's desires. Even the ML and their family already approves of her. She has emperor and empress' approval, she has her family backing/support to do whatever she wants around town. She doesn't need to care about her reputation and in this society wherever she is, that's still ok (she is getting marriage proposals from a top scholar). In short there are no obstacles for her.

In contrast I feel like Ning Wangfei is a much more interesting/intriguing character to me than the FL. She's stuck in a marriage where she's not valued, she has real yearnings for freedom and she has big hurdles/limitations of what she can/cannot do. I feel a lot of sympathy for her. I'm intrigued by how things will play out for her. Unfortunately she doesn't get a lot of "air time" in the novel, at least so far. <<less

Sui Tingheng... the man that you are... This ML tops all the other MLs when it comes to DEVOTION. This man may not be super yandere or “cool, detached” like other MLs but THIS IS A MAN YOU WOULD WANT TO MARRY AND SPEND THE REST OF YOUR LIFE WITH IN REAL LIFE! In REAL LIFE, y’all. If I ever meet a man with even just 1/2 of ML’s devotion, I would husband him up in a heartbeat! Sui Tingheng is one of my TOP MLs ever!

I have enjoyed this... more>> fic SO MUCH! Still not my fave of this author but this is easily within the top rankings.

I love that it’s feel good, I love that there is not much angst, I love the side characters, I love the fact that conflicts get solved quick... it’s just pure enjoyment from start to finish! <<less

First of all, Fu Yunyi and Sui Tingheng are so perfect for each other. 😭😭
Spoiler

Fu Yunyi was our main protagonist. She was well-known as the leader of the noble idlers in the capital — youngsters who didn't care about studies nor propriety. Since childhood, she was spoiled even by the emperor because her birth was auspicious. But despite being favored, she didn't escape the emperor's cruelty. Three years ago, her whole family was exiled and braved through a series of assassinations wherein she also fell off from a cliff. She was missing for almost 1.5 years. Thankfully, heavens had been kind to her and she got rescued. Upon the enthronement of a new emperor, her whole family was reinstated to their former glory. She was also out for revenge from those who harmed her family, the so-called long friendship was broken and she would avenge herself and her family step-by-step. What I liked about her was that she was a very kind girl, despite what others might say. She would help people regardless of their status. She was the type of person who didn't think that what she did was an act of kindness because she just did what she thought was right. She was literally the light that shone to Sui Tingheng, to the emperor, and even to the empress in their darkest days, and yet she didn't even know it. They said she was unruly, but she had the best interest of everyone.

Sui Tingheng was our male protagonist. His father was a neglected eldest prince who ultimately become the emperor in the end. Sui Tingheng, as the child of the unfavored prince, was bullied and looked down upon his whole childhood. But despite it all, he still became the diligent and righteous crown prince. He was a pitiful child. He grew up well and was very protective of people he loved. What was actually endearing about his character was that he never imposed himself on Fu Yunyi. He came to her slowly while secretly guarding her. He was never domineering. He was always shy when it came to her fearing that she might find him annoying (she never did). He never wanted to dim her brilliance that guided and protected him before, he only ever wanted to accompany her in the life and keep her safe. He was a man who literally yearned for his beloved. He waited and waited patiently until she finally looked at him — looked at him only and properly. He was the perfect man for Fu Yunyi.

To describe both of our protagonists, I would say they were both good people. They actually had the right to become the villains but it was never in their character. Their love story began with friendship and I think that was what made it beautiful as well, although Sui Tingheng had been keeping her in his heart all along. I love that it was not a love at first sight, it was admiration, friendship, and then love. It was gradual, even for Sui Tingheng.

I also loved their own families, the Sui family and Fu family were both good to their children — they both trusted their words. For the Fu family who already experienced the wrath of the imperial power, it would have been so difficult to accept that their only daughter would be part of that imperial power but they never once doubted Yunyi's preference and choice. They were all reasonable people.

[collapse]

And just like the other novels of YXDY, this showed the genuine care and love among the female friendships. In a society where women were continuously pit against each other, it was always such a treat to read genuine girlhood among the female characters here. I love it so much. This novel easily became my most favorite novel of YXDY.

This reads like a rehash of all of the author's good novels except it lacks the subtlety and depth that makes those other ones good. We get a badass protagonist who's always winning, and villains who are evil yet incompetent foreigners trying to bring down the empire (insert bombastic sideeye). The villains always lose, often because of the protagonist's halo, so after about five failed assassinations the plot was getting real stale. The supporting cast is just there to prove how amazing the MC is by either getting their asses... more>> kicked or being saved by her.

A lot of the conflict between the first antagonist and the MC is rooted in past betrayal, how they were so close yet he turned a blind eye to her plight. Nevertheless, what I was told of the past just made me question why she was so close to him in the first place. He looks down on her friends and her unruliness, she hates his mother and judges him as cruel and unsuitable to be a ruler. I guess the answer is that she was thirteen and didn't know better. Personally I feel like the satisfaction of revenge would be better if readers were shown how their relationship had been before the betrayal. I get that the author might not want to break the happy tone, but as it is the whole thing feels one note. <<less

After DNF three other books I’m honestly really happy I was able to finish this book. Really good would recommend it. The romance is initially one sided slow burn, where it’s the ML who carries a hidden love blooming from a savior incident with MC, a steady devotion and protection from the side even when he was powerless and he didn’t ever expect to have a chance to win her over. Honestly they were very sweet together, a typical dynamic reversal: awkward proper prince who burns with devotion vs roguish... more>> flirt heroic lady. The prince also has a bit of a dark side that she accepts because in the imperial family you do need it to survive, our girl is very smart and can be tactical towards her enemies. Their romance was a good contrast to the supposed affection turned hatred between her and the imperial uncle, seeing how one was always there for her and willing to protect her freedom while the other took her for granted and tried to change her.

The main villain was a bit predictable but it was set up from the start with a few surprises along the way. But in the end the true enemy (the old emperor) was long dead before she even returned to the capital. I wish he had suffered a bit more after we learned his plans but his actions affected everyone both good and bad. I’ll be honest the only part I had gripped with was how she always seemed to be able to foil the plans of the antagonist, I know there’s usually a secret information network or spying that was mentioned/implied but sometimes it felt a bit too convenient for her to have done something to ruin their plans, to the point I thought there was gonna be a last minute revelation that she was reborn or had a prophetic dream.

Usually I hate when the side characters take over the novel but I did wish we saw a bit more on Ning Wangfei. She’s a bit of a tragic figure and the only reason she wasn’t shut out of society was because of MC. I would have loved to see a bit more of her ending in the extras rather than what was written. I didn’t particularly like the extras they weren’t bad but I just didn’t like them much compared to the main story. <<less

This is genuinely fantastic. I honestly can't find anything to complain or nitpick about. The pacing is basically perfect, the conflicts are natural and don't feel like "token conflict that gets resolved immediately", the characters are all well written, and the story is very satisfying all the way to completion. This is good stuff.
