A Precious Pearl in the Imperial City

Description

There are three treasures in the imperial city: Me, my husband and my mother-in-law.

Su Guifei¹ was favored and envied by countless imperial consorts in the harem. Chen Wang² grew up with His Majesty showing favoritism to him. However, anyone, who was more or less educated, would sigh with regret and say that this pair of mother and son were sure to come to a bad end in the future.

Ming Jiuzhu, who was about to marry Chen Wang: Really? I don’t believe it.

Chen Wang in Jiuzhu’s eyes: a beautiful and kindhearted little fairy boy vs. Chen Wang in the eyes of others: His Majesty and his favored consort’s hedonistic son.

Jiuzhu often wondered why people always gazed at her and Chen Wang with a ‘you are doomed one way or another’ look. Could this be the ugly side of jealousy?

Aiyah, the hearts of these people are so dirty.

SLAMS HANDS ON TABLE

WHY IS EVERY NOVEL BY THIS AUTHOR SO GOOD??? In particular, her historical novels are all just so... so... SO GOOD.

This novel has a heroine who, in my opinion, has some points similar to the heroine The Times Spent in Pretense. Of course, there are other differences, but I couldn't help but note a point of similarity to the two of them.

The novel focuses on the life of the FL, an innocent young lady who was raised by Daoists and our ML, a favored prince, and the... more>> ties and twists involved in their childhood, past lives, and present lives.

It's a story that I felt was woven very well.

The FL is an innocent and sweet young lady, raised by Daoists, which is truly fitting with the story as the theme of cause and effect constantly surfaces, especially since there is a reborn character in this story who constantly compares events from the past life to this life.

The FL of course has her own hidden abilities, not to dissimilar to the heroine in The Times Spent in Pretense. Overall, the story is more fluff than intrigue, telling the story of the intertwined lives of the FL and ML, from a previous life to this current life, from childhood to adulthood.

Of course, there is intrigue but a lot of it is your standard intrigue found in most gongdou novels, the only difference is there's multiple princes at play here, which I feel like is usually pretty unusual for the shorter historical stories.

The characters are all well fleshed out and it was an extremely enjoyable read solely for the comedic aspect of it.

I don't really know how to describe how I feel for this story; it's both enjoyable, fun, hilarious, but also sad in many ways. As with all of this author's stories, I felt a sense of bittersweetness as I finished the last chapter and the extra.

There was one minor side-plot in this story though that made me cry a lot, which was the story of Tao Hua and Chang Sheng.

Spoiler

One of the large points of this story is that the previous Emperor was, to put it plainly, an extremely shitty Emperor. He forcibly took women into his harem and many women who were left behind stay in a palace within the harem rather than be forced away to a nunnery where their lives probably wouldn't end well as they would have been forgotten by all. It's the ML's mother who did this to protect those women, and one day, one of the previous Emperor's concubines, Zhao Taifei, her cat is tortured by I believe the fourth prince? Or at least, it's implied he broke the cat's leg or something when he was in a bad mood. But it's discovered by our FL, who returns it to Zhao Taifei, and afterwards she and the ML begin an amicable friendship with Zhao Taifei, hearing her story.

Zhao Taifei is a woman who had a beloved man, a sweetheart, but was forced into the harem by the previous Emperor despite that. The person she loved soon died afterwards out of grief from what I understand, and she had to live on. As you learn more about Zhao Taifei and the person she loved, Chang Sheng, you know that the two really loved each other. Parts of the interactions between the FL/ML and Zhao Taifei are peppered with her memories of Chang Sheng and the things he promised her when they were young and together. When he died, he couldn't even be buried in the family's ancestral grave, and instead had a single lonely grave by himself with only his niece to visit and send him incense. It's a story similar to a lot of the concubines within the harem left behind by the first emperor, many of whom were forced into the harem by the previous emperor.

Zhao Taifei's story was particularly sad though in my opinion; melancholy and poignant. Near the end, the FL finds where Chang Sheng's grave is, and brings him an altar of peach wine. Zhao Taifei had promised Chang Sheng that she would make him two altars of wine, and buried them beneath the peach tree in the peach orchard the previous emperor had planted for her. Although the peach orchard sounds romantic, Zhao Taifei simply states that while he planted that for her, he also could plant a pear orchard, a chrysanthemum garden, etc. for any of the other women in the palace, and that in the end, it truly means nothing. She gives the altars of wine to the FL and ML. The FL meets Chang Sheng's niece, a storyteller she previously met, when visiting Chang Sheng's grave, who gives her a wooden jewelry box with faded paint. In the box there was only a faded red thread wrapped around some hair, and a wooden hairpin. The hair is his hair and her hair; when she broke their relationship due to being taken into the harem, she cut her hair and gave it to him, in hopes he could find a beloved girl. Instead, he took a cut of his hair and tied it together, a tradition men and women did to symbolize that they would be together forever. The wooden hairpin was made by Chang Sheng, who carved a peach blossom hairpin for Zhao Taifei at her request. He promised her that he would give her a piece of jewelry every year, and by the time they have many children and grandchildren, the box would be full. Zhao Taifei tells the FL that before she entered the palace, her name was Tao Hua, and soon afterwards, she passes away.

[collapse]

I don't know why, but the story of Zhao Taifei for me was particularly sad. I cried a lot during those parts, because you could clearly tell how much the two loved each other, but in the end, Zhao Taifei was left alone for many years while her beloved passed away from grief only a few short years after she was forcibly taken into the palace.

For me, the story of Zhao Taifei, the previous life's events and this current life's events were all interwoven beautifully together.

In comparison to some of her other stories, I felt that this one didn't drag on as much in comparison to others. Although the finale was somewhat anticlimactic, it was also extremely entertaining for me, so in the end, I didn't feel disappointed at all. It's a story that I felt was just the right length, had good pacing, and was just overall interesting.

Anyways, my review is all over the place, but I truly just don't have the words to describe just how much I enjoyed this story.

As always, 10/10, would definitely recommend! <<less

Another very good novel by Yue Xia Die Ying. A more light hearted and optimistic slice of life story set in the imperial harem but with a lovable cast of characters. Despite it's relatively light-hearted pace, there's enough schemes and poignant moments that adds depth.

YXDY caputres the feeling of imperial life well as always although the main character is unconventional for someone thrown into the imperial lifestyle.

Jiuzhu is simple and pure but not s*upid. She doesn't do any scheming or double speech but is very endearing as a character. In... more>> an imperial setting, writing a lovable naive character is hard but Jiuzhu manages it. She loves very purely and embodies the themes of the novel very well. Karmic cause and effect as well as sometimes the truth being as simple as it is.

ML, also quite unconventional in that he's not quite the most competent prince. He grows a lot through the story as a prince but he's also not a bad person. Quite nice to read about an ML who isn't already a perfect prince.

Side characters: all pretty interesting. Emperor is a good emperor and had many good scenes with ML and Consort Su. Consort Su is also very cute and mother in law Vs daughter in law is so overused I much prefer a loving relationship. No one is really perfect but that's okay because the people who love you will love you still.

Romance: very comfortable and loving. Both very whole hearted towards each other and wants to be the best for the other.

The novel got weaker towards the end but still enjoyable. <<less

Another wonderful story by the author!

Destined to meet you.. in this life they finally get a HE~ this cute couple is so sweet and innocent when they're together^^

FL is pure but steadfast.. she's true to her thoughts and feelings, and strikes back whenever the villains shot! She's always firm in her belief that she's right and normal, and it's everyone around her who are weird (I laughed a lot whenever she leaves everyone else baffled^^').

ML is a rare good son (and man)... but he was a brash, overbearing and pampered... more>> prince~ making everyone else (except the FL) to despise yet fear him.. he shamelessly brings out his most decent self in front of the FL because he believes that to love is to give the best!

Both FL's and ML's close families are clever and loving.. I'm sure there are skeletons in the closet of the imperial family, but I'm happy that the author focused more on the innocence, loyalty, trust, gratefulness, hope and love of each characters (well.. some with bad values are best left forgotten~).

Anyway, this is another precious treasure that can be read over and over again~ so minty!^^/

Edited: Btw, I just realised that this is the first time to read author's story which does not have the MC (s) to be pretentious! Well.. maybe the ML was a little bit pretending in front of the FL... but because of his romantic reason, it feels very natural^^~ <<less

A really comical and sweet read. I literally chuckled my way through the book. Set within the backdrop of the fight for the throne, it’s an adorable romance between a sweet innocent strong sensitive heroine and a spoilt intelligent kind hearted prince.

they’re both really sweet and devoted to each other and their behavior is just too damn funny.

Spoiler

like how FL idolizes ML and says he’s really good, he’s really kind, he’s the best when his reputation is really bad and ML is kind of a wastrel at the start of the book though he’s still a pretty kind person behind the spoilt violent facade. But because she so clearly and obviously idolizes ML, ML actually feels that he has to live up to the image she has of him so he gradually changes for the better. I know that doesn’t sound funny and it sounds very endearing, and it is, but the way everyone else reacts and even ML himself’s inner monologues make it hilarious as well.

I really also like how ML gradually falls for FL and he keeps treating her better and trying to get good stuff for her and it’s super obvious to his parents so they tease him about it, but he’s just like nahhhh because he hasn’t realized how he feels and after he realizes, he’s quite shy early on.

[collapse]

I think for a ‘fight to be crown prince’ kind of story, the scheming was alright though it felt more comedic than anything.

Spoiler

most of the plots failed due to pure luck. 🤣 Like how ML almost died at the start and then didn’t because he accompanied FL somewhere else. Or how ML’s minions went to the academy to donate stuff and somehow chanced upon a plot to divide the royal family from the scholars. Or how some villains wanted to blow up a tomb to interrupt the crown prince’s ceremony but did it late because one of the villains bumped into FL’s masters before that and got traumatized. Lol

[collapse]

I think the story reflected more on the growth of the ML through the book from a spoilt boy to a mature young man ready to take on responsibilities with his adoring and adorable wife being his motivation to push on. It’s pretty lighthearted for the most part and it’s very enjoyable to read. <<less

I was excited to read another novel from one of my favourite author.

It is good story, fluffy and funny. The MC is the most sincere and innocent girl. I mean in a very good way, because when most of the nobles and royal family have complicated mind and schemes, with her straightforward and innocent mind will turn things to the better way.

The ML is like rebellious teenager but because of the MC, he become better and better.

MC and ML, both have loving family. Although ML is the prince but he... more>> is the most beloved prince to the emperor and his mother.

I think the author always create different personality of MC for every novel, which is great.

What I like the most is the author always give the readers the same message which is to love ourself. It is simple and powerful but many of us unable to do it.

If you like straight forward, innocent, always lucky and not s*upid MC, you could try this novel. It's need brain power to mtl this novel, I hope the translator will have more energy and time to do the hard work and continue the translation. <<less

What a nice novel. We a see naive and likeble FL and and arrogant and cute ML.

Good father and mothers who love their children dearly regardless of their short coming eg FL's painting technic being praised the best by the mother. And ML's little knowledge of some court work being praised as the best opinion by the emperor. Despite favouring one women he doesn't lessen the treatment to his former women and children. This all about love and family so light and likeble.

This novel will give you diabetes!

I have read so many palace novels these years but never have I ever come across something soo sweet. Most novels start sweet but but the end they become tragic/serious. But this one does not.

It starts happy and sweet and stays like that for the entirety of the novel. Let's see the main characters:

... more>> ML- Prince Chen:

He is adored by the Emperor to the point he treats him as his only child almost ignoring his other sons. His mother is the most (and only) favoured concubine of the emperor who later becomes the Empress. To the emperor only this pair of mother of son matters. So our ML has unconditional love.

Fl- Ming Jiuzhu:

She is the daughter of a well respected noble family. Her father is the assistant Minister of the Ministry of rites. Her family is really really trusted by the Emperor. She is quite literally the precious pearl in her family's eyes. Her mother, father, brothers and even uncle's love her unconditionally.

Now I really appreciate this kind of family dynamic for once. Where the family doesn't backstab or have ulterior motives. But this kind of sweetness is a little doubtful at times. The FL is said to be so likable that even her sister-in-laws who are supposed to be her competitors favor her (at times more than their own husbands). The maids love her and literally no one can dislike her. She also has some hidden martial arts skills which I think adds some much needed depth to her character. But I can't help feel she almost has a halo that everyone no matter which side they are on has to like her (even the villains!)

Prince Chen, our ML on the other hand is more interesting. He is supposed to be a overbearing prince, a spoilt brat, snobby, domineering, etc. But he changes himself completely to match the hopes FL has for him. It's nice to see his transformation and people's reactions to it.

I just think the Emperor is partial sometimes (which obviously is the point but at times it's kind of excessive)

Spoiler

I know there is a reason. With Empress and ML being the only one that love him and supported him during his prince days

[collapse]

Still in his eyes it's as if no other son is his own. It's okay to hate and treat the other concubines as if they don't exist, since he was forced to marry them. But a little compassion might help. No?

The sons though I think a lot of problems in his sons personalities is caused by his blatant partiality.

Spoiler

The eldest prince says he knew his father only loved Prince Chen, the day he saw him carry the prince on his back while wearing the dragon robe

[collapse]

Isn't this sad. I would totally feel like the other princes feel if I were them. Especially since the ML's prior character doesn't help.

I did enjoy the sister-in-law and brother bonds. Plus the family dynamic felt like free therapy to heal my parental issues.

If you want something serious and epic this isn't for you clearly. But if you want something to heal your soul and want to smile from start to finish you're welcome to read this. You probably won't find anything this sweet anywhere else. <<less

It's so good that I want to find the people who rated this one star and shake some sense into them!

The FL is a totally funny, loyal, kind, and smart in her own way. She loves the ML with her whole heart and vice versa. Truly an adorable couple. Not to mention their parents are just as good to them which is pretty refreshing for this genre.

I also love how the side characters aren't canon fodder evil or boring but have in depth personalities and goals as well. They seem... more>> just as human and real as the main characters. <<less

Y'know what? There's a reason why several of my historical c-novel favorites are Yue Xia Die Ying's work. All of them are meaningful, touching, and most of all, it will left you with reluctance to part but also sweetness from its good ending. As expected, this is another masterpiece.

Slightly different from her other historical works, it retains the leads' youthfulness until the end. The ML was sure to be the future emperor but that was all in the untold future. It has a lot of conspiracies, yes. But it wasn't... more>> mentally exhausting because there are a lot of healing and touching scenes. There are a lot of rational and interesting characters.

The romance wasn't full of passion as of those mature stories, rather, it feels like the taste of first love— innocent, bashful, sincere. They love each other, more than anything. It was wholesome and soft.

One of the reasons why it wasn't tiring to read this is probably because there is no war, no deaths one after another because of someone's scheme, and because everyone who wants to turn over a new leaf was given a chance to change.

However, out of all the favorable characters, my most favorite of them all was the emperor. I think, he's one of the best father emperor that I've read. Rational, kind, and humorous. He wasn't hungry for power, he's just a compassionate monarch. Maybe, as a father, he's really not perfect because his favoritism towards the ML was indeed full of bias which lead his other children to be depressed. However, he's one of the best emperor in all the c-novels I've read. He's sincere towards the people and not suspicious of his ministers.

Anyway, be it the Emperor, the Empress, the actually strong but pretends to be frail scholars of the Ming family, or the main leads, they are all lovable. Even those supporting characters are not just randomly written, they are written with depth.

Overall, this story is great. Touching, sweet, healing, and has a lot of meaningful messages. I've learned a lot and realized a lot because of this. This just shows how deep and creative the author's mind is. What an awesome story. As expected of you! 10/10.

P. S. My only dissatisfaction is that THERE WASN'T EVEN A KISS ON THE LIPS BETWEEN THE LEADS MENTIONED. NOT EVEN A MENTION OF THEIR FIRST NIGHT!!! <<less

The story and the characters are ok but I couldn't bring myself to rate it more than 2.

I read a manhwa, "I Will Divorce the Female Lead's Siscon Brother". It's a story where the FL will be sister-in-law of the original FL, and she gets tired of living where everything revolves around the original FL, how everyone likes her all the time and how all the good things are always given to her. Even FL's husband will be doing the same, so she decides to divorce him as she can't... more>> take it any longer. I couldn't help but notice so many things in that novel are similar to what the FL does in this. Although it's not as bad in that novel, but still some similarities were present, so I couldn't bring myself to completely like the FL. Also, at this scene, I completely gave up on trying to like her.
Spoiler

So prince qi wang would get implicated in a banquet. His mother is a very bad person and all the stuff she did comes out, and she is given the order to commit su*cide. The prince loses everything in that one night, all his support, his place, his power and everything. This prince wasn't so bad, so I felt kind of bad for him. It was really hard for him to grow up with such a father and mother. The FL in the midst of all this will be just sitting and eating and when he is kneeling down to the king he glances at her. She gets offended thinking why he is glancing at her when it was his mother who did all that. Yes, that's true. But it's also shocking to see someone just sit and eat while your whole life is turned upside down.

[collapse]

The FL also keeps going on and on about how amazing and fairy like the ML and his mother are all the time. I was expecting a really good background story where they both did something amazing. But it was a total let down for me.
Spoiler

so the FL sees something she shouldnt and is tied up and thrown into a river. The ML and his mother will be fishing and she gets caught in the lure and they save her. THAT IS ALL. Anyone would have done that right, also given that they have a lot of servants for everything, except ordering their maids to save that girl, they dint do anything. How the hell does this make them into a fairy and amazing person? They saved her life, having gratitude is fine. What is this nonsense about being a fairy? It's good that the Empress and ML are good people else the FL would definitely be killed because of her s*upidity, she could never survive all the harem fights.

[collapse]

The favoritism of the king was also not good. I know what their mothers did was wrong, and the king hates them, but the children were innocent. The king could have handled it in a better way. I also felt the ML had no thoughts about the future, everyone hates him now and later if he doesnt become the king then, him and his mother would be the first people who will be killed. Dont normal people think about these things? But I really liked his character and his character growth was one of the main satisfying points of the novel. <<less

Did you read The Career of an Imperial Concubine and wish it had a romantic, happy end? Well, I like to think of this book as a sequel of sorts. This is because the main characters are so similar, but the story is sweeter and more romantic.

Like the first book, the emperor had many concubines. From them, he got 4 sons. Then he met and fell in love with Concubine Su. Thereafter, he spurned all others. The much-favored son he had with Su is the ML in this novel.... more>> In this book you read about the great love the emperor has for his lady love, in addition to the love story between the MC and ML.

This is a light, amusing book-- but it isn't shallow. There's a poignant part about the plight of aging concubines: solitary women who had been forced to enter the harem to serve a previous emperor, but are now just waiting to die. It kinda reminded me of a retirement home.
Spoiler

There's a story about a concubine from the previous emperor. She was engaged to someone she loved, but the emperor forced her into the harem.

[collapse]

Also, the family dynamics between siblings are complicated. Each person is constantly vacillating between affection; ambition; jealousy; and the need to survive. For instance, the brother -princes have several get-togethers. Some of the pairs genuinely like each other and enjoy hanging out with each other -- but they still have to be cautious. Or at least it seems like they like each other. Or they might like each other, but that wouldn't stop one from turning on the other. What wouldn't you do to be emperor?
Spoiler

There's a great scene where they have dinner. Nobody says it, but everyone is afraid of being poisoned. So they decide to have hotpot. Since it's communal eating, it's safe.

[collapse]

The MTL is easy to understand. Actually I have read several MTL novels by the author and they were all easy to read. Good writing leads to good MTL

I deducted a star because some characters and parts were superfluous. <<less

Whatever deity chose to reincarnate the ex-fiance did such a good job. It was all because of one mistaken marriage that MC & ML didn't get to meet in the first life. Just one step wrong, & in that timeline, ML died to conspiracy, his mother went crazy, & MC had to mature so painfully that she was barely recognizable. In that life, the silly & carefree girl we see in this novel had somehow transformed into a cold & cruel avenger. Just how much had she suffered & been... more>> disillusioned by the world to use poisoned incense to kill both her enemy & herself? Surely she would have tried bringing their crimes to justice if she still believed in justice, but I think justice failed her in that world. Her enemies had won, & they obtained power so absolute that no one could stop them. So she became wrath & justice incarnate, and used the incense she had always prayed with to instead commit mu*der.

Thankfully, we get the good timeline in this novel, because the original storyline would have been way too tragic for me. Just the glimpse we get through the flashbacks is awful. <<less

As always, this author's novels do not disappoint. The humor present in every scene makes everything sweeter and cuter, the romance that is fun and without exaggerated drama, the dynamics very well done, the construction of characters, and not only the main ones, everything is great.

MC

The MC is naive, but at the same time, perceptive. Think of someone who easily believes in certain people but is an excellent judge of character so she is not at risk of being deceived by people with bad intentions because her intuition keeps her away from these people.

... more>> She was raised in a monastery for a while, and because of that she has a simpler yet more realistic perception of the world.

I generally don't like cute and naive characters, because I think that kind of character gets tiresome quickly. There are times when cuteness doesn't work to save someone who doesn't do anything other than being cute. But that's not the case here, in this novel the dynamic between the characters was very well done, each one has a time to show their strengths including the lovely MC, who may seem a bit clueless but actually just uses different tools for navigating the world, which turn out to work as well or better than machinations and schemes.

ML

As always, this author's MLS are partners and not bosses, and maybe for those who are addicted to yanderes, these kind of characters are not ideal, but for me, that's the only way a romance novel can work, otherwise i'll just be rolling my eyes everytime ML shows.

This ML is lazy but fair, smart but relaxed, funny but moody, and a good person everyone sees as an arrogant troublemaker because he does things straightforwardly and tactlessly, yet still does something when no one else does.

The thing is, this author manages to do something rare, which is to add flaws that really make a character better and more interesting, instead of just adding complexity just to excuse bad behavior... Don't let this scare you tho, this author's MLS aren't perfect, but they're still dreamy, as they should, afterall this is a romance novel;

FAMILY

Both MC's and ML's families are pure cuteness and healing for hearts disappointed with family life. Advice from someone who needs this medicine: I recommend daily doses.

In many novels you see the authors trying to create this cute and heartwarming dynamic, but ending up with a session of suck-ups that only know how to exaggerate praise as if they were looking for a job and not having breakfast. BUT, in this novel, the subtlety of the author with all the thoughts, little actions and interactions between them, makes the pampering much cuter, realistic, and satisfying.

VILLAINS

They're not the best out there but still, they're not cartoonish or over the top, they also have more building to them than most novels. They fulfill their role of representing a challenge when necessary and adding tension at certain times, but as the pace of the novel itself interferes, they are used as comic relief quite often, that's the only reason why I don't consider them as good as the rest of the characters and dynamics.

SO, to wrap it up

Strong MC's that are different from the usual formula of "ice-queen" and MLs who are dreamy yet not sociopath or "frost-king" type. Cute family dynamics with real cute characters. And a fantastic sense of humor.

Finally, I recommend it, as I recommend the other works of this author! <<less

Rating is around 4.6.

Imo mot a very good story compared to yue xia die ying other's stories.

MC still has a great family and everything is smooth sailing, but it is kinda slice of life. I struggle to finish it when I was around chapter 100s. I can't explain it Clearly, just that this story is good but not a very memorable that I can't forgot it- kind of story.

However, don't let my review stump you to read this. Everyone has their own experience. If I hadn't read To be a... more>> virtuous wife or Eight treasure trousseau, I might love it.

This story got a very good family for both MC and ML. Imagine a smooth sailing ascension to crown prince with emperor's full support. I love how ML is striving very hard to fulfill his boasting to MC, how MC is very pure and warm, and the interaction between emperor and ML as father and son. A very heart-warming story indeed <<less

This is a fairly uncomplicated novel with uncomplicated characters, if you like to eat dog food the whole way this is good for you. However, I'm not a fan of eating that for the whole journey that's why I deducted a star. I skipped a lot of sentences because it doesn't matter for the plot, just shovelling more and more kibbles to us.

But, I still enjoyed the novel because eventhough the plot is simple it's still engaging, and the characters are interesting.

I read translator's chapters 1-4, then MTL'd the rest. I've enjoyed all of the author's translated content so far, and this would be one of my favourite books by her, alongside Don't Discriminate Against Species (urban fantasy), and Ascending Do Not Disturb (cultivation).

Born into a righteous, valiant household, the FL is raised in a poor Daoist temple by two reclusive masters until she is restored to her rightful identity as a young miss. She has a straightforward, sweet personality that cuts through any scheming and some well-timed and comedic luck... more>> that punctures evil plans.

The ML is brash and brave as the spoiled Prince, but he soon matures out of love for the FL and is very sweet to her.

As always, Butterfly's Shadow Beneath the Moon wrote stellar supporting characters. The FL's family is loving and supportive, and the ML's parents are wonderful, especially considering one of them is the Emperor.
Spoiler

How the Emperor tricks the ML into becoming responsible, how the FL's dad tempers the ML into becoming learned, how some of the ML's brothers end up supporting him, were all heartwarming to read, and the evil schemes can't go far with the FL and ML around. My favourite scene is the climactic fight where the FL lets loose her hidden skills with hairpins.

The FL is a kind, innocent, smart heroine who's relaxing to read about. It's as if the author took the splendid cultivation FL from Ascending, Do Not Disturb, and placed her in the historical imperial world of I Am This Type of Woman or The Times Spent in Pretence. It's a more glowing, fluffier story than To Be A Virtuous Wife or Eight Treasure Trousseau. Highly recommended. <<less

Such a nice story. An innocent, upright, cute type girl suddenly got thrown into the harem. Instead of being stained by its dirtiness, she is like the star, giving light to some people. It’s more fluff than drama

Spoiler

The story is clearly showing that the harem environment causes mental issues to its people. It’s sad to think that these people would have been good normal people if it’s want for the circumstances that broke them.

Another super hit from this author.

Unlike her previous historical novels, the MC & ML are not smart-cunning-ruthless characters. MC is naive and holds nothing but sincerity for ML. ML is a spoiled favourite child of the emperor with a righteous and bold way of doing things.

MC family love her. ML family (aka emperor and his bio mother) love him and MC. There are also some loving siblings and some hated siblings.

Definitely recommended

Such a lovely slice of life story. YWYD is as good as ever. Although it kind of 'tame' compared to her other imperial court novels, it has enough spice to liven up the story.

I quite like this one because the characters are much more fleshed out. Especially ML and his emperor father. The brothers are well written as well, and while the villains are hateful, as characters they are a pleasant read as well

I MTL'd this about 3 times now lol The MC is a badass women in that way where she is purely herself. She's naive but now; silly but not; s*upid but not; yet all those at once. She's loving and loyal and true to herself and her loved ones. She's willing to face anything, do anything, and give up everything for those in her heat. I'm just waiting for this to be translated, so I can binge read it again.

The ML, his father, and his mother are gems. They are... more>> amazing people that anyone would want in their life. I recommend this to every single person. It's full of fluff and so sweet you'll get cavities immediately. <<less
