Very good novel. This is a Xianxia that almost goes against other xianxia. What I mean by that is that this novel is very normal from a guy like me’s point of view when it comes to feats. You won’t read about 10000000 km high mountains, people moving 10000 km in a blink of an eye, empires boasting trillions of people and so on. It does not exaggerate things like most xianxia do. What I also like is how level-headed and cautious this MC is. He isn’t the kind who provokes anyone for not breathing how he likes in front of him

Spoiler

Even the first person he killed, attracting the ire of a powerful clan, he did it by mistake.

The translations are also good, the guys working on this project seem very dedicated. I appreciate their efforts!

1/5 good premise

Crap storytelling

Crap plot

So much happening with 0 character development, and lets not forget the "I destroyed your family, stole your father, and forced him to his death leaving you an orphan now be my familys b*tch" with the MC going omg ok please step on me

Its a disgusting novel truly.

The beginning was interesting and had some suspense, but after the MC "joins" a sect. The story slows down dramatically, to the point that I am losing interest in LN.

Rereading As I see Xianxiaworld has now plenty of Decent Editors

I was annoyed after reading 4 chapters. First the Story seems similar to the story of Arthur and Mordred (Arthurs Bastard Son from his Wicked Sister). The Novel is so annoying to read it feel like machine translated and an epic fail arrangement of words (But that was 6 month ago and it seems they have now decent editors)

After reading then I well reevaluate my review. As of Chapter 108 and yeah its really bad to the point where... more>> one can read 1 chapter in less than a minute (took me 20-30 sec)

First It lacks Direction of the plot (MC wanted to be the strongest?). As you read you well notice MC is here then there the ever changing scene. Second it Lacks Impact on Cultivation, MC is not OP but is hardworking to the point that MC was once a warrior, a mage, a summoner, and etc. Third its way to short, You are introduce something then the next thing its forgotten. You see MC is popular yet forever alone. Fourth lack of Enemies, It was a good battle when MC offended certain characters then after that it went blank. And Finally (To lazy to make a list) It lack ROMANCE! MC meet clam girl and was forgotten, MC meet another girl and was again forgotten, and lets not hope for another girl since it well also be forgotten.

When you read this you don't really need to understand everything since its as simple as it can be. It has to much repetition and there is no improvement in MC's part. When MC learn something, after a few chapters MC well again learn another thing and it well repeat itself. In short it is a total waste of time trying to understand this novel.

Well I just read 100 chapters but sadly it was not really improve on my first impression. The Translation is OK but the novel is just a big disappointment on my part.

It lacks the ROOT that wanna make you read it. I just feel I well read it but the desire to read more is empty.

The Good part is since I had a bad first impression and so I never did expect anything from this novel. So like I said some chapters can be read (at least for me) for just 20-30 sec. I feel bad for TL who translates this and to the Editors since I am aware how long it takes for each chapter. But I can't help it that is just how boring this novel is. (Still this is not my Final say since I am still reading this) <<less

It's a good xianxia unlike any other wherein they keep on using the same format or pattern from outer disciple to inner disciple

- more improvement on how the MC budgeted his finance as it causes confusion
- it's quite unique as the antagonists can think on how to handle pressure

As of Ch. 70.

An unexpected rough gem. While unspectacular, it is a cut above from other average series as it does not fall back to the usual tropes too much. Yes, some aspects might be familiar but the author took the pains to write in a roundabout manner and in different events that are somewhat unusual when compared to other similar titles. The pacing is not as slow as Mo Tian jI (Demon’s Diary).

The plot events differ than the usual, it can be be a ride to see the ups... more>> and downs of the main character instead of the usual smooth sailing of other stories where the MC clear every hurdle after a fortuitous encounter. The MC depends mostly on himself and then benefited from his actions that rippled elsewhere in the setting. Hard work and persistence, no real shortcuts. Even his talent, we are told; comes with drawbacks. As for the MC himself, one would say he’s pretty bland. A typical righteous person, calm and decisive when needed. But like what others have noted, his ultimate goal seems to be be stronger for strength sake. There are some mysteries, but the reader aren’t told of any underlying plot driving his motivations. The side characters come and go and at this point of the story, several named characters either have been written off in the current arc or, in the case of some antagonists; already killed. The early reviews were very harsh, perhaps they read it when the series were translated roughly without editors, but currently the translation is good and quite polished from the start.

Give this a try, it’s a little different than most other stories. <<less

The Good:
World building is done fairly well, if not with the simple elegance of IET's works, it's at least comprehensible. The MC comes across as human, and isn't MGA's psychopath; he does make friends and does not mindlessly slaughter. The arcs are largely enjoyable with decent pacing and well-painted descriptions, which help with the visualization.

The Bad:
Two major complaints jump up in the novel: Each arc is a virtually separate story, and the MC has noticeable personality changes in each segment. For example, the author tweaked the MC"s character... more>> from: a warmly dedicated son, -> a cold, underground fighter, -> a sneaky sect disciple, -> a courageous soldier -> a manipulative spy, etc. Secondly, the side characters exist only for the use of the plot. This is pretty common in chinese fiction, but it doesn't make it any less annoying. In each arc, the side characters dance to their assigned tone, and are then dismissed; they become utterly forgettable. That means you have difficulty making any real connection to the MC, since his 'family' around him gets continuously recycled, so no real social expectations exist. The Summary:
An OK read, enjoyable enough that I hope it gets picked up again, but not a F5 sect level. :) Let the chapters pile into arcs, and binge read that way. <<less

Great novel. About as far in it as I am in Demon's Diary. Both are very good but so far this one is more typical body training and is less dark. Demon's diary has more of a spiritual component so far and since it starts in a sect that focuses on ghost and demons its a bit darker.

Both are great!

Don't read it, you will be disappointed. This novel is not satisfying at all, especially the ending. It is ambiguous and ret*rded. MC throughout the novel never seems to get what he really wants, gets involved in someone else's plot and business and constantly has blocks that come out of nowhere. The plot armor is over 9000 in this novel: whenever there is trouble for MC that he cannot solve, there is always someone who ends up saving him by coincidence.

Let's talk about MC's motivation and romance. First, MC trains because he promised his mother to become strong. This is probably the dumbest reason I have ever seen. Just training to be strong for the sake of being strong is a better reason than this. Then, MC starts to chase after a girl who is way stronger and also doesn't give a damn about him. He wants to be strong so he could get her. All this while there is a second girl who is in love with him, cares for him and is near him and he ignores her all the way until after a third of the novel where she ends up in trouble because of him. So, he decides to be together with this girl that he realized to have feelings for all this time, and what happens? They got separated. Multiple times. Every time he finds her, they get separated over and over again. Eventually, she leaves for some higher realm and waits for him there for a f-ing 300 years!

Also, I honestly hate the whole thing with his summoned skeleton. It's just not handled well at all.

Each individual arc in the novel is kinda interesting and entertaining, but when you consider the overarching story, it's not good at all.

And from the ending you can't even f-ing tell if he does end up with the chick because it's ambiguous in this way. His whole goal was to be with the chick and the story doesn't f-ing tell if they end up being together.

Differently from Demons Diary, this novel follows a standard xianxia plot which disappointed me.

Pros:

  • It has a good world building
  • MC that doesn't have any extreme characteristics (e.g. Bloodthirsty, cold, righteous) and doesn't acts arrogantly
  • Few antagonists moved by beauty and arrogance
Cons:

  • MC centered. This feature is not always a con, but since the MC is a bit bland it drives the story down a bit
  • Lack of development for certain antagonists, abilities, magical artifacts and side characters
... more>>
Spoiler

The antagonists only appear when fighting the MC and afterwards they are not mentioned in the story until another conflict with the MC at a more powerful cultivation level.

Side characters that you might find important disappear for hundreds of chapters. E.g. Zhong Xiu, who he has looking for a long time is present for ~10 chapters and they separate from each other a few chapters after they promised they won't be apart

Certain abilities are given importance in the beginning/ middle and are simply ignored during the rest of the story. Also some of them lead to you believe that they will be important but are never developed. For example:

  • MC is shown to have a high talent for space magic. This is never used afterwards
  • MC focus a lot on using and crafting talisman. This is almost never mentioned after he leaves his planet either
  • MC obtains an magical artifact that can teleport him from the real world to the dead world. It's never used or mentioned again
[collapse]

The novel also has a loose ending and doesn't have a good romance plot. This aspects don't bother me, but if you are someone who values this points, you might be disappointed.

Overall, an average novel but it's quite inferior if compared with Demos Diary. <<less

While the novel isn't terrible by other standards and I've rated similarly generic novels higher I came in expecting more after reading Mo Tian Ji (Demon's Diary) by the same author, instead of the originality seen in MTJ's setting, character development, and so on, here we have a completely generic novel following all the tropes by the book. MC is tr*sh but he has a fortuitous event that later solves all his problems from training, understanding laws, and so on. The slower pace which work so well in for example... more>> Demon's Diary and World of Cultivation is just plain dumb and make the novel a complete bother and chore to forcefully dredge through because there's really nothing complex or any interesting development going on for readers to still be engaged even without the fast pace packed with action and tr*sh talking. Pointlessly many words and explanations for how difficult and hard something is supposed to be—only for that difficulty to be thrown out the window because of the MC's 'cheat'—is all there is. <<less

I wouldn't call it bad, but compared to demon's diary and Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality, it really is a MEH novel.

I'm not going to go too in depth but the novel is very bland, and it is definitely a different style that what this author usually does. Not that different is bad, but the author isn't good at writing and fleshing out these new personalities of the MC and side characters.

The biggest difference is that the MC is a lot more kind hearted and that he's infatuated... more>> with a girl (and there are like 30 other girls that are 'beauties' that maintain a 'friendly' relationship with). Romance is basically a mess, kind of like his other novels, except this one has a lot more emphasis on it, which makes it that much worse. <<less

Ok, so this is my first review so here I go. The portal of wonderland started off really boring for me, and didn’t really catch my eye until probably chapter 40, this novel is a very well written novel, plus since they’ve started editing the other chapters, the reading quality has become very outstanding. I hope you take the time to read this amazing novel and enjoy it just like I did

The plot is interesting, the MC is level-headed, there is romance with no harem tag, the MC is a morally good person, and it's a good read.

I'd say the only problem is its failure at times to get my blood rolling. As a previous review said, it lacks a certain hook. Other than that I love it for AL the reasons pre-mentioned.

The quality has improved, and it isn't hard to read anymore. Wish some people would update their reviews... anyway please read. It may not be mind-bloeing, but it is... more>> refreshing.

EDIT: My opinion still stands, and I hope people continue reading. <<less

As of chapter 50, The Portal of Wonderland could be said as a mid-level xianxia/xuanhuan. If I have to rate it fairly, it’ll probably come at 3.5, but as there’s no half... well, 4 it is.

At the beginning, it had a good premise. However, it lacked the hooks that usually make a series memorable and tempt readers to always come back.

On the plus side, the MC was quite level-headed. He knew when to lay low and when to go all out, although side characters were cliches. The pace and narrative... more>> arranged properly, although not superb. It was just so-so now, but it had the potentials to develop well in the future. <<less

Compared you the author's other works like Demon Diary, this novel is only mediocre. Nothing special grabs your attention, lack of details, and the main character, although experiences growth but for some reason you can't relate to him as easily as Liu Ming from Demon's Diary. Honestly, it's good light read but not nearly as good as author's other novels.

It's a really good novel and has stayed top 5 ongoing novels on Qidian almost its entire release. It has good characters, has some future hints of direction in the first 50 chapters, MC is deemed tr*sh but the MC doesn't mind/knows things about his bloodline the rest don't.

The sect building in his other 2 novels (which are some of the most read) has been really good so I'm expecting a very good start to the novel and if the author follows his style the novels aren't much about cultivation... more>> but more about what can I do to advance and how should I setup the easiest road to do so. The MC has a OP starting power but its magic will fade away once he starts getting higher on the cultivation ladder and instead become a mistake so there is a clear struggle for the MC and he early on befriends people who are not going to appear again before long into the novel so it has very good foreshadowing.

Things to expect in this novel:
Lots of world-building and interactions inside the sect, fighting and out smarting older disciples, and a grand adventure to become Immortal. <<less

This is a solid novel about a boy that tries to reach the martial arts apex, but its has some flaws. The author doesnt keep track of anything (money, skills, people the MC meets) and also really likes to skip time. Furthermore the MC gets a harem of the cheap sort, the "heavenly" girls just save him for no reason, etc.. Still its interesting to read and the ape power is strong in this one.

I'm enjoying this story well enough but there are some problems with the writing.

For example, there's all that build up for the 1 year competition in the sect and then bam.... it's a year later and he's on the frontline and the competition was never mentioned again. the same thing happens in other situations where the story builds up towards the climax of the arc and then there's a sudden time skip and we don't know what the hell happened. did the problem get resolved? did he kick ass and... more>> take names? we'll never know. we miss out on what should be the most exciting parts of the story arc. it's frustrating.

The romance? I don't read these kinds of stories expecting a good romance so the lack and bad writing don't bother me much in that department. I actually prefer this writing to the 'screw everything with tits' stories that are so popular right now.

In the end I agree with a majority of others. it's a nice enough read but his two other books are better. its good but not great. <<less
