I have to disagree with the earlier review. The couple is very young and too poor. Uke is an orphan and Seme has a bad home life, so he spends most of the time with uke.

They move to Beijing, Seme is an aspiring writer, uke works as a waiter and runs the household. Seme's mother falls sick, he doesn't have a job or money, he uses his partner (uke) 's salary to pay for treatment... Uke never complains or questions, just hopes that Seme doesn't give up on his dreams.

But... more>> days are hard, so uke does what he has to do to put food on the table. Eventually, he breaks up with seme.

Spoiler

in the last part, we see that Seme is now super rich and successful. He learnt about a year after Uke left, that the reason he was even given that first chance was because the head of a major publishing house personally recommended him, and that's only because his new boytoy, uke, praised him to the man. Seme, like everyone, believes that uke dumped him for a better life... and moves on.

In the present, we see super rich and successful Seme accidentally meets Uke. Uke is still poor, still limping, but he never once contacted the seme for anything all these years.

Spoiler

what the other reviewer saw as Uke leaving the seme when he was poor and hungry, but coming back when he was rich and successful, I see as the seme finally realising all the love and sacrifice uke did for him without asking for a single thing in return, and acknowledged that love by bringing him back home.

[collapse]

Though this is an HE, after the emotional rollercoaster, I kinda wanted a very happy epilogue where the uke is being pampered within an inch of his life by his loving seme. <<less

??? What's with this story. I rarely dislike seme protagonist novel, but this one, the ending is so abrupt.

Spoiler

when seme's still poor and troubled with his works, uke left seme to prostitute himself with rich guys.

Seme needs money for his mother sickness and uke gave some of his money (when he works as a server or something) time to time to help seme. Gradually, uke went out a lot and often spend nights outside until he finally, never came back.

Later, Seme finally pulls through his problems and gradually his work condition got better, his financial condition and his mother condition was treated and his life got better.

Afterwards, he heard uke was a little lover of some big shot, and later met uke when uke was working in a restaurant. Uke start chatting with him and not long after he ask uke to get back together after all nostalgia, reasoning himself that it's normal for uke to left the poor him to get together with a rich man back then.. And the end

Uhhhh what 🤢

[collapse]

Spoiler

It might be reasonable for uke to want comfortable instant life and prostitute himself to rich guys rather than staying in a bas**ent with poor seme. But why did seme have to get back together with someone who left and betray him when he's at the worst and came to him when he has succeed.. That's so disappointing. My, seme's vision and decision seems to not matured even after the dark period

This is such a poignant, realistic, raw story that will make you see the bitterness of life through another lens.

Totally worth a read!
