What’s with the 1.7 rating??? I know angsty “victim MC and scum ML” type of novels tends to have a bad rep, but this is well written (and honestly one of the better ones. I seriously love how this novel develops). There’s no Stockholm syndrome, extreme abuse, or any other demented elements. Although this MC does start as your typical victim heroine, she is someone who can be assertive and take control of her life when she really puts her mind to it. (What she comes up with is pretty... more>> ingenious in my opinion)

These types of novels tends to shine when the MC disappears from the ML’s life

The premise of this novel:

I knew from the sypnosis that this was going to be interesting.

The huge irony that the s*x scandal she was writing articles about was her own husband’s! To rub even more salt in the wound, she finds out through the interviews with the mistresses that the ML treats his mistresses better than his actual wife.

What’s even more ironic was the words her boss shouted at her when he fired her:

Spoiler

Quote from MC’s boss:

”Do you think you’re the wife of which CEO and can do whatever you want?”

My reaction : Ouch! He really hit the mark

Right off the bat, I noticed that the premise of this novel is pretty similar to Years of Intoxication (a BL novel published in 2015)

  • the 7-year relationship that was mostly kept secret from the public, but is well known amongst the elitist
  • the ML openly cheating on his partner and the MC’s tolerance to the blatant adultery.
  • The MCs eventually leaving the ML to regain their own life followed by the ML aggressively chasing after the MC
This novel also has some striking similarities to One Night, One Day, One Year, One Lifetime

  • The ML was forced to marry the MC
  • The MC has a terminal illness that she kept secret from the ML
  • The MC invaded into the ML’s life but erased all traces of her existence in the ML’s life once she’s gone
The difference from the other novels is that this ML takes an entirely different path (It’s what makes this particular novel unique)

SPOILERS of all the major secrets:

Spoiler

The ML - a typical 2nd gen rich kid and has the immaturity level of a spoiled brat. It was almost embarrassing to watch him throwing temper tantrums towards the 2nd ML.

  • He admitted that he used his influence to stunt the MC career, which is why she never became a editor-in-chief and remained a low-tier journalist. He also admitted that he set her up to be the one to cover all his s*x affairs.
  • Likewise, he also went through some amazing character growth after Grandma Huo sent him to an almost failing business where he had to start from the bottom and deal with the stark reality of the hierarchy of companies.

Grandma Huo - she hold some pretty deep seed secrets about MC and ML. Secrets that have weighed heavily on her heart throughout the entire novel

  1. The ML was adopted and not a blood member of the Huo family. (What’s even more surprising is that the ML had known this for a long time because a blood test showed that they were incompatible when Grandma Huo was in need for a kidney transplant)
  2. The MC is the illegitimate daughter of Grandma Huo’s son and this, the true heir to the Huo family’s assets
  3. The ML and MC had first met at the MC’s orphanage when they were 4-5 years old

2nd ML | Jiang Luyun - the MC’s blind date (set up by Grandma Huo) and her 2nd husband following her divorce from ML. A huge twist is that he’s actually gay and had a male lover. This male lover never actually appears in the novel since this secret was revealed in the very last chapter and the gay CP had long since eloped to get married. (so much for the 2nd ML syndrome vibes ?). His real reason for marrying her was to deter his family from pressuring him to marry a woman. The two of them plotted to fake her death so that MC could restart her life and the 2nd ML could use “grief and mourning” to avoid marrying another woman. ?

Ending Spoilers:

Spoiler

A three year time skip happened following the MC’s ‘death.’ Both the MC and ML goes through amazing character growth during the 3 year separation. Their complete change is what makes their reunion interesting as they both take in the completely changed persona of the other.

The MC collided with the 2nd ML to fake her death. After her faked death, she left the country and became a renowned journalist.

  • The way her career advancement was described was that the major figureheads are the ones begging to be interviewed by her. (What a major reversal to the first chapters in which the MC was the one begging her subjects to accept her interview)

The ML himself also made some impressive career achievements as he started at the bottom and managed to make a previously failing company branch thrive.

The only part I’m iffy about is how he snuck into her hotel room following their reunion. He wraps her in a blanket and hugs her to sleep, which is pretty cute.

However, this is where things get controversial.... they have hate s*x the following morning. At first, it looks like r*pe or dubious consent, but a few factors lead me to believe otherwise

  • For one thing, they were having a heated argument right before the s*x and the MC was cursing him out during the s*x (hence why I think this is hate sex)
  • Afterwards, the MC is mostly contemplating the reason behind the positive changes in the ML, believing that the change is attributed to his marriage to his mistress, Liang Shiying. He fact that she’s mostly thinking about the emotions rather than the forcefulness of the s*x lead me to believe it was consensual (although not very positive). So what’s actually happening here is that the MC is resisting her truest desires due to perceived unrequited love.

The way the ML truly redeems himself

  • He gave all the inheritance to her (remember he accused her of marrying him for the Huo family’s wealth in the beginning and made her sign a contract that would strip her of any of the inheritance)
  • The grand line up of bodyguards that greets her once she tries to leave the hotel...a blatant show that he wants their relationship to be made public (remember that their relationship was kept at a low-profile in the beginning)
  • The 2nd ML’s elopement was also his little scheme so that the MC couldn’t use the “I’m married” card
