“Ke Beichen, I’ll give you three seconds. If you don’t say you will marry this woman, we will take turns to r*pe her!”

“Three.”

“Two.”

“One.”

He just hesitated for one more second for the sake of his mom and they hung up.

He had to marry someone he didn’t love that day and then he would know where his mom was; but he had never expected he would lose her. He ditched his fiance and ran away from the wedding to look for her but it was too late–she might have been engulfed by the ruthless waves; he just couldn’t find her.

When his fiance came to his house and accused him of his betrayal, he got several guys to r*pe her by turns, just like what she did to the woman he loved–but he was even crueler.

“Take a video. Make sure her face can be clearly seen. I am gonna play it in front of her mother!”

The first quarter of the novel is told in Lan Hupo’s perspective, but Ke Beichen is the actual MC of the novel.

Lan Hupo is an example of an unreliable narrator. No, she isn’t mentally ill..... but the narrow-mindedness of her POV gives a very misleading depiction of the ML. Her POV gives me the impression that she isn’t someone who could understand the ML. Actually, I don’t even know if she ever learned the truth. (The explanations in the final chapter was difficult to MTL)

It’s not until the POV... more>> shifts to Ke Beichen’s POV that the story gets interesting.

Character’s summary (MAJOR SPOILERS) :

Spoiler

Lan Hupo - is your typical abuse victim. Her personality is very weak. I feel sorry for her, but I don’t like her as a character. Her relationship with Ke Beichen is pretty dull. They may have some sentimental memories together, but that’s where it ends. I don’t ship them at all. It’s not until a certain character gets introduced that KBC’s character starts to shine.

Ke Beichen - he’s not a straightforward character.

  • To his lover, he was controlling, unfeeling, and volatile.
  • To his mother, he was a filial and attentive son.
  • To his daughter, he was an affectionate and indulgent father. (Personally, I believe that it’s his relationship with his daughter that makes this novel shines. Not with Lan Hupo)

Meng Qinqin - Kei Beichen’s fiancé and the illegitimate daughter of KBC’s father (in other words, KBC’s half-blooded sister. Yup, their parents set up an in*estuous marriage)

Ke Beichen‘s mother - she barely appears in the novel, but her situation is what ignited the plot of the novel. From her brief appearance, I get the sense that she’s not fully in touch with reality (likely her cooping mechanism from her prolonged captivity)

Lan Beibei - probably my favorite character. She really brings out all the good sides of her father with her childish charms. I particularly enjoyed the cute interactions between the ML and his daughter. She actually figured out that the ML was her biological father which is impressive for a 4-5 yr old child.

The events in the summary are pretty dreary, angsty, and slightly demented. It’s only afterwards is when the story really gets interesting

Spoiler

This stoic, possessive CEO practically becomes a street thug who treats his daughter to some ice cream and plays along with her childish rambles.

  1. He rammed his car through the gates of Li Wenzhou’s villa and “kidnapped” his daughter
  2. He got arrested twice. His secretary had to bail him out
  3. His car got towed away due to traffic violations
  4. He stole a police car, lol

In truth, these behaviors are not to dissimilar to what Lan Hupo experienced during her captivity. It’s the addition of their daughter that kind of makes it look more comical. I feel like her presence really does adds some brightness to the situation
