Everyone says “like father, like son”, but Gu Fuyou has mediocre talent. So mediocre that when people see her, they mock her, wondering how Gu Wanpeng could have such a daughter.

She was so ordinary until she was accepted into the Xuan Miao Sect, with some suspecting that Gu Wanpeng pulled strings for her behind the scenes.

During a beast-taming class, the master was teaching disciples how to summon spirit beasts.

Someone, trying to mock her, chuckled, “I’ve heard your father’s golden spirit bird can attain the nascent soul stage. Like father, like daughter, right? I bet the spirit beast you summon will be equally impressive.”

She started the summoning formation, but there was no movement for a long time.

Everyone laughed, “She can’t even summon the lowest-level young beast.” This was beyond mediocrity; it was downright useless.

Suddenly, the formation emitted a blinding light, and fog covered the ground. Everyone gasped in surprise.

She summoned something, not a bird or beast, but a living person.

This person was the unparalleled genius of Xuan Miao Sect.

Even she didn’t expect it, and the summoned person looked equally bewildered.

In a sudden impulse, she used her ring finger’s blood to mark the person’s forehead and named her ‘Nanzhu Jun’.

The master intervened, shouting, “Stop, she’s your senior sister!”

But it was too late; they had already formed a pact.

wow just wow, not much novels managed to fully captured my admiration, but this one did among just only a few others like FGEP and the likes.

the depth of the characters and personalities was amazing, the romance slow burn was of course the cherry on top.

very much recommended.

Maybe I wasn’t in the right mindset for this specific novel, and my judgement got completely overshadowed by that.

Before reading this novel, I had just finished a masterpiece of a revenge story that left me thirsty for more, and now here we are.

I was told that this novel is a big complex revenge plot, but compared to my recent read, it really, really wasn’t.

And again, this by itself isn’t inherently a bad thing at all, but it lead me to build unrealistic expectations for the book.

Spoiler

For the first part of the book, it start really slowly and nicely so we could see the characters develop and take shape right in front of us, and it ended with a tense cliffhanger.

However, both of what I mentioned died in the next book. Every character that wasn’t the main leads was basically just a cardboard cutout.

Personally, I found the MC completely unbearable and even unrecognizable compared to the first book. I get that she went through an insane amount of trauma and is even in a different body, however, there wasn’t a single trace of her past self at all, especially when you compare her to the FL who went through a similar situation.

[collapse]
and finally.... the revenge..... All I will say is that if you’re planning to read this novel solely or mainly for this reason I’d advise against it. but if you see the revenge plot as a great addition to the story, then by all means, go for it.

When I finished the second book, I was in shock when I realized that there was a THIRD part, and the first thought that came to mind was, “What more is there even to say?” And after every chapter, I found myself repeating the same exact sentence.

The last part felt completely unnecessary and lazy. You could tell that the author was out of ideas on how to end the book, so instead of writing “the end”, they just threw every plot they could think of on the spot.
Spoiler

Like there was literally arc after arc when the previous arc hadn’t even finished, and by almost the end of of the book, you get like five different plots that go back and forth until they finally get some closure.

[collapse]

In the end, after some thinking, if you ask me if it’s a horrible book, I’d tell you it really isn’t.

It definitely had some plot holes, but it’s the type of novel you should read at a fast pace with zero analytical thinking to enjoy the fun ride.

Unfortunately, in my case, I couldn’t do that because I thought the book was bigger than it actually was, and I only realized that by the end of it.

I’d still recommend this book for anyone. <<less

This was such a lovely read, I think it's one of the best baihe I've read, the world building, the characters, the plot, everything was so we'll fleshed out and laid out.

The author knew perfectly well how to intertwine honey like sweetness with gut twisting bitterness, this is a story about a girl who everyone looked down upon soaring to the sky, but not you usual type, it talks heavy expectations, family issues, human greediness, innocent love.

Gu Fuyou is unrestrained, cheerful and yet, she's so stubborn, she will protect who... more>> she cherishes and once her goal is set she will go through hell to achieve it. She's sharp minded and scheming when needed, she's smart, brilliant but with a sincere heart.

Zhong Michu is full of curiosity towards the unknown, always forbidden to her, she's upright, clearheaded, gentle and extremely doting, yet she's also one with a big devoted heart.

A story about revenge and coming to terms with the unchangeable, a story about rebirth, but literally, more so of the rebirth of a deeply wounded soul that finds new meaning in life and rushes to explore it once more, walking with baby steps towards love and healing.

It's so beautifully written, everything, from the pain, the love, the despair, the healing, some parts left me feeling devastated, they left me feeling such a devastating void, but I guess the journey itself also takes you to heal alongside the characters.

And I thinks that's so beautiful.

As for the love between Zhong Michu and Gu Fuyou, it so sweet, I love it so much, they are literally made for each other, their relationship was so lovely, I ship them sm

It's a wonderful read, highly, highly recommend!!!! <<less

Interesting premise and the story has gotten even more exciting once the characters have entered Xian Luo, an entirely different world where rare spiritual beasts exist within wild and dangerous habitats. The tropes are familiar with the MC being a spunky and resourceful type which is a contrast to the cold and tsundere FL who has inexplicably become bonded to her like a spiritual beast.

There is a great power divide between the MC who has low cultivation but is brilliant in creating talismans and the FL who is a golden... more>> core cultivator and a student prodigy in their sect. While we expect the FL to constantly come to the Mc's aid this seems to be flipped on its head at the moment as they undergo challenges within Xian Luo and the FL is tested to her limits and is on the brink of death.

I'm a sucker for cultivation baihe so this is right up my alley. Can't wait to see how this develops. The translation is also impeccable. <<less

I've barely started reading this story and actually, I tend to dislike this genre. HOWEVER, as luck would have it, I'm bored with nothing else to do so on a whim, decided to read it. Oh boy, smart move on my part. Ha ha ha

I'm not sure how the story will go but in terms of translating, it's outstanding. If nothing else, I want to give encouragement and thanks to the translator because s/he is doing a marvelous job. This is an instance where the translating is propping up the... more>> story. Many thanks!

This is not to say that the story is bad. Far from that. It's just that I'm only onto chapter 6 so I can't say for sure but so far, I think it's very good. I'm not familiar with cultivation, sects, etc etc but if you're someone who loves this type of story, I have no doubt you will enjoy this. I'm someone who doesn't normally, but I'm having a hoot of a time right now. In fact, it's very enjoyable! The MC is young, lively and very lovable and you can't help but root for her. The FL is cool, distant and on another level altogether. Waiting to see how these 2 come together is going to be really exciting. Huzzah!!! ha ha ha. I hope it continues to be as good as I'm thinking it is.

If you were like me and glossing over this story title, stop what you're doing and start reading this. The rate of chapters being translated is very quick and the quality of translations is beyond compare. Thank you.

***

Binge-read to the current chapter of 55 in 2 days. I guess that should tell you what I think of the story, right???!! lol

This has been Xianxia 101... I'm still not too crazy about this particular genre. Also, this is not a simple story. In fact, I feel pretty s*upid because there's a plethora of terms I'm unfamiliar with and there's not a shortage of characters, either. My poor confuzzled brain!

The relationship between the 2 main characters is complex, beautiful, heartwarming and damn! It's the very definition of "slow-burn". They barely recognize the feelings they're starting to develop for each other so it's gonna be a good long while before they even attempt to let the other know what is truly in their hearts. Their interactions and growing affections for one another is really riveting. It's like tinder (not the dating app)... one little spark and we might have ourselves a raging forest fire. At least that's what I'm hoping. ha ha ha

Now for the long wait for more chapters to get translated. Thank you so much :) <<less

(As of Ch. 62) The story is unendingly heart wrenching and more than worth your time. If you approach and notice the first few chapters are slightly uninventive, DON'T let that discourage you from reading further. These characters undergo many changes, and the plot doesn't seem to be giving them the cliché 'easy outs' we see in many other web novels. This makes the characters' lives seem much more real- and worthy of stirring emotion in readers.

I greatly hope that it continues to meet the standard it has set.

One... more>> of my favourite aspects of the story so far:
Spoiler

Powers given to our main characters come with heavy baggage. With the knowledge that no character is omnipotent- everyone has weakness that can be exploited- you can really feel the stakes.

Also, who doesn't love my darling baby Ah Fu?

This is an extremely well-written novel. No moment in the novel makes you feel like a filler, random bs, or ass-pull. The story arcs are extremely coherent from the beginning to the end with a very good pacing. It's like the author has planned everything clearly from the start and just follows through with her plan with no intention of dragging out the content for benefit.

The novel is plot-driven; the romance is not entirely the main focus but plays a big part in advancing the story. The plot itself is... more>> intriguing enough to grab the reader's attention, but the main strength of the novel is undoubtedly the way the romance and the angst are written. The romance is slow-burn and feels natural, and it's expressed mainly through the actions of the characters instead of just sweet talks. In fact, not until near the end of the novel that you hear them express their love through direct words, but we know their feelings have been around for a while, and the characters themselves also know about their partner's affection. And when the angst comes, it hits hard. You can really feel the emotions of the characters during their tragedies, which is my favorite thing about the novel. The ending is also fulfilling and satisfying, so you don't have to worry about getting an abrupt ending after investing so much into the novel.

All in all, a must-read novel even if you don't like GL. <<less

This novel is about two young girls who struggle in the cruel world of cultivation whilst dealing with complicated family relationships and their own emotions. That is how presents itself in beginning at least.

The story as of chapter 62 is a grim piece with mentions of s*avery, r*pe, depression, su*cide as well as war. While the earlier chapters where fairly light hearted the tone changed all to quickly. I was not prepared for how quickly the story changed its tone and as I am really not a fan of the... more>> misery trip I feel that a rating for 3 out of 5 is appropriate.

The translation is decent although there were several oddities at times with sentences not fitting the action at the moment or sentences being repeated for no reason.

The world building is all in all nice but nothing special. It is what you'd would expect from other Xianxia novels.

The characters are relatable and likeable aside the antagonists, although other characters aside the two main characters were not given enough time to be completely developed properly, which relates to the prior shift in tone. <<less

I have been following this series for a while, and I knew from the beginning that I would enjoy it, the dialogue is fresh and not overused, and the setting and world building is done well, I love how the story is fleshed out with politics and corruption, instead of being a straight romance, but either way, I wouldn’t mind. The author allows for characters to grow apart, and still be able to connect even though they are different from where they left off which is realistic, and not done... more>> enough in this genre. The characters actually have development. The translation does it justice, and it is not painful to read, a godsend. <<less

This is some good stuff up to the current chapter (c43). It's definitely worth the read and feels like it's really good, but I can't say for sure exactly how good it will be until it's finished. Xianxia stories often have lackluster second-halves after all. As it stands I give it 4 stars, but depending on how it ends it can either go up or down.

I came back to tell you how good it was. It's been a long time since I've found something really worth every minute of reading. This novel has a lot of good reviews and ratings and it is justified. I won't describe much here, I'll just say that it was a good and interesting adventure.

To call it a novel, to be honest, the language does not turn much. This is definitely a relationship story, but romance is just a bonus. There are a lot of topics that are touched upon,... more>> to a greater extent, the relationship in the family and to children. It's a very difficult novel in this sense, because it made me cry starting in the middle of the novel. And if I thought it was just a one-time thing, oh ahaha, I can say that I cried a lot here. For me, this is an indicator of a high-quality novel that can evoke such a range of emotions. The novel is very similar to Clear and Muddy Loss of Love. But there is a difference, of course. It doesn't hurt that much. And most of the novel smooths out the sad moments, but there is a lot of sadness here.

Characters 10000/5

The plot is 10000/5

Morality 1000/5

Mental -100/5

In general, I really liked it. This is an immediate gl novel.

This story is primarily about family love, revenge and harmony. I really liked how the author did not justify the MC, but rather the opposite. As the author did not let go of what happened in the end and we got a really antihero, who became one due to circumstances. How at one time we got a broken, but still the same hero we met at the beginning of the story. Generally speaking about the main couple, I can say that both characters were delighted. But still more probably FL. Such a tender and devoted love. I envy MC.

Spoiler

Yes, FL falls in love first. In any case, she is the first to understand this, and you will cry at exactly what moment she realized it. This moment broke me.

[collapse]

Bottom line, the novel is definitely worth it. It's a very difficult job. The author literally thought everything through from the very beginning. And at the end you're like, "Wow, so that's why and why it was." I will definitely read this novel again later. <<less

What a ride! The plot, character building, wording and the slow burn romance, it all truly was worth it in the end.

This author has made me learn a lot of lessons throughout the book. As there is a beginning there is an end, even if yr doing the most evil deed in the world, in the back of your mind love is still in your heart, always in the corner of your eye and never too far away.

Live in the present and treasure what you have now, the author writes... more>> great perspectives on love, loss and life. Great writing on the expression of anger and moments of wary, shows that the human mind is fickle and emotions are always changing.

I will always love these characters in my heart and when I see this book again, I will think about them fondly in hopes of reading it again

This book has made me cry and laugh multiple times from beginning to the end, sometimes in disbelief and sometimes in sorrow, I truly love these characters from the bottom of my heart. I love u Author! <<less

There's a lot of things to love and few things to dislike with this novel.

What I really love the most is the quality of translation, which really surprised me as the as the updates came really quick. I also love the characters, especially the MC and FL!

FL is cool and awesome, but is not the cold overbearing type who is invincible or strongest/wealthiest in the world, she is someone who can lose terribly and can suffer a lot of loss; MC is smart and charismatic, but not to the point... more>> that she can do no wrong and will be perfect until the end, she is someone who you love and hate and then love again because she is deeply flawed and her circumstances isn't easy.

The plot, world-building and characters definitely hooked me in, but as the plot progressed it seemed not as fleshed out as it was in the beginning.

This only became a problem in Volume 2,
Spoiler

after Gu Fuyou reincarnated.

The biggest flaw would be... the world became smaller, and the worldbuilding that the author worked on introducing just went poof.

What about Dongli and Xuan Miao Sect? She was a very interesting character that got sidetracked after the extra chapters, surely someone entrusted by Yunran Xuanzun to monitor her greatest enemy's dragon daughter would've been a formidable cultivator. She just got... married off and written off, a few chapters detailing Zhong Michu's and Dongli's responsibility to rebuild Xuan Miao Sect would've been nice as we've spent the first volume reading about Xuan Miao Sect and various cultivators within the sect. It feels a bit unresolved and lacking to me, Xuan Miao Sect's revival deserved a chapter detailing its situation after Zhong Michu became the Dragon King or after her marriage to Gu Fuyou, or when she reached immortalization because then that would mean she attained a higher cultivation level than her master and mother. Yunran Xuanzun, Ji Chaoling and majority of the cultivators literally sacrificed themselves for Zhong Michu.

What about Ah Fu and Yi'er after Zhong Michu came out of seclusion? Being the child of MC and FL, she had very little characterization and scenes other than stalking her mother. Reading about a grown up Yi'er with Ah Fu would've been nice, they're both sole survivors; Yi'er is the only golden dragon and Ah Fu the only remaining Zhenmao.

I still highly recommend this novel, amazing translation and I love the dynamic of MC&FL! Great read and enjoyable read if you like the more serious type of reading. <<less

This is honestly one of the best novels I've ever read on novel updates - it feels professionally written, and I almost wish this was adapted into a tv series. The translation is amazingly well done without the awkwardness that sometimes occurs when translating from chinese to english.

Got me hooked that I lose sleep (it was worth it). Interesting complex characters and world building. There is definitely some flaws in the novel. This story feels like a breath of fresh air, it's Xanxia and gl but without the dull overused same plots. It has a distinct story, nice characterization, and it's not afraid of not having the protagonists not be the most perfect destined people who always win.

That's right, the protagonists do not always win here, they even lose significantly and more importantly they lose in a meaningful way, it's not symbolic losses you can sweep under the rug.

It's not a perfect read, I feel volume 1 is amazing, but volume 2... more>> and 3 are a bit less focused, in need of a slight polishing/editing, but it is still very very good and anyway way better than most stories on NU.

Utterly amazing!

The beginning was somewhat confusing to understand as you're just thrust into the action. Basically, our MC gets into a sect, but they don't really want to be there. Things become much easier to understand afterward, so don't let the beginning deter you! The story is rough around the edges, but by the end I was hooked. It's a good read.

This story balanced the themes safely. Politics, war, mysticism, & romance are all in there, but kept at a minimum. The focus is on the main character & story, moving at a good pace. I like the extra ending, we get to see how things turn out after.

1st volume was okay to me, but it set the whole premise of the story. Things got really interesting in volume 2. By volume 3, I couldn't put the series down. I binged through it like nobody's business! I really enjoyed some of the fluff between MC and FL in volume 2 - but oof, it was a sloooooow-burn. The story itself though, mm - what an adventure it was! Came for the romance, stayed for the story.

It was easy to read, and very enjoyable. The world-building is very colorful... more>> and descriptive. I'm glad that this was my first experience into fan-translated novels. The translation in the beginning did put me off though, because I didn't know why it was translated the way it was - nor why people said it was such a great translation. After a while, I got used to it (and got some clarification from the community, so now I have a better understanding).

Do they get a happy ending? :

Spoiler

Yes, they do.

[collapse]

Note about the translation quality:

I was pretty confused about the translation and genre when I first read this, being that this was my very first translated novel of ANY sort, baihe included. Didn't know what baihe, xianxia, or web novel was (yeah, I've been living under a rock), or that this quality of translations were considered really great quality. So let me address the elephant in the room for baihe newcomers who are undoubtedly going to read this novel (because it's so highly recommended as a first read) and go wtf, like I did... that most of these translations are machine-translated, with some really good ones being human-edited after being mtl-ed. I do not know if any of it is funded or if translation groups profit much from anything, but if there is, I can imagine there'd be quite a lot red tape with publishing and royalties - which makes it very unlikely that these are getting the same official translation quality as some international best sellers, such as Three Body Problem. So, considering all that, this is indeed as good of a fan-translated work as it gets. Maybe in the future, it will be even better lol.

Edit: I have now read some other stuff, and I understand completely why people said this was a great translation haha~ -_-" <<less

Finished this a few days ago and here are my thoughts:

I think I would give it a 7/10, it was definitely a very enjoyable read for me and there were many positive points. But at the end of the day, I wouldn’t call it a personal favorite due to some parts where it fell through a bit.

The world building in this novel was amazing, every time I opened it for a read, it felt like I just walked through a door into a completely new world. With it being a... more>> xianxia novel, there were many magical concepts unique to their world, but they were described in meticulous detail, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the settings of our main characters which brings me to my next point.

I absolutely adored the relationship between the main leads and I also each character on its own, especially Gu Fuyou the MC. She grew up with a lack of cultivation talent but my favorite quality of her was that despite her lack of innate talent, she always stood up for herself against bullying from others, she continued to fight for herself and she made up for it with other hard earned skills. For example, her passion of formations and how she made it a life long project for herself. The main leads have polar opposite personalities but they both change each other for the better and balance each other really well.

Overall, I could tell that the author took the time to plan out the plot and how all the puzzle pieces would connect. I also really enjoyed the foreshadowing sprinkled all over the novel especially the exposition chapters so that when major revelations happened later on, it never felt as if random plot points were thrust at the reader just for shock value. There was a strong foundation built early on that would give you a sense of satisfaction when you get to the final revelation.

Despite all my praises, there are two reasons this novel didn’t go in my favorites list. First, I felt that the romance was barely ever there or maybe you could say it was very slow-burn. See, I usually don’t mind slow burn and sometimes even enjoy it depending on the writing, but here it felt like barely any romantic developments happened throughout the novel and most of the romance was squished together towards the end.

There were simply too many missed opportunities to develop side characters that would have made the story so much more nuanced and impeccable. The author introduced so many interesting characters but we barely ever got to learn about their backgrounds and it felt as if they were just there for the main leads’ use. I would say even the fl’s development felt a bit lackluster compared to the mc’s.

Spoiler

For example, in those 700 years that Gu Fuyou was not around, I would loved to read a few chapters from Zhong Michu’s pov. How did she cope with GF’s death, all the years she spent cultivating and taking revenge on some of the people involved in her sect’s death, how she raised Yi’er and Ah Fu. All of that would have helped the readers connect to her yearning and longing for GF even more. Even besides that, I wanted to know Scholar Zhai’s story and her background, some of the ens*aved people especially Feng Sui since they specifically emphasized him as an ambitious strong man despite being branded with the s*avery curse. And just so many more characters that had interesting expositions but were never fully fleshed out.

Another big one was GF’s friend/brother’s fiance (forgot her name). She literally got her tongue cut out, witnessed the love of her life committed su*cide in front of her, spent 700 years without any loved ones around except for ZM keeping in contact with her. It would have been so nice to see her journey during those 700 years and how she established herself as a doctor etc. Of course, I am not asking for chapters upon chapters dedicated to these characters but they had very strong premises and I think there was definitely some lost potential there. Overall, that entire 700 years time period could have a few chapters of its own before jumping right into GF’s reincarnation.

And one last thing that made me a bit uncomfortable was...

Spoiler

how the s*aves were handled in the novel. Most of the time, they were just described as “the s*aves did this” or “the s*aves did that” which made them sound like one-body ? and felt a bit dehumanizing to me. But also, that might be something that got lost in the translation so I tried not to dwell too much on that.

I think most of the issues I had with this novel could have been solved if the novel was a bit longer. But alas, that’s the author’s decision so that’s that. Despite some of my grievances, I would still recommend this to others mainly due to the high translation quality and storywriting as well. But if you are looking for a more romance centered story, you might not have a fun time with this. <<less
