Pretty decent. Quickly falls apart as the story devolves into a generic dense harem protagonist xianxia template. And not even in a good way. Do you like reading about foot massages? Do you like a protagonist that never fights himself? Do you like sudden and whimsical storylines that have no connection to anything? Have I got a story for you

Biggest criticism is the dense protagonist who has multiple girls following along but doesn't do anything with them. It gets increasingly frustrating as the story constantly reinforces how useful a wife... more>> would be for the protagonist. To the point that it would save his life.

Second biggest is mediocre story structure. The author doesn't properly foreshadow upcoming story-arcs. You are just approaching the end of the previous arc and the protagonist starts talking about the new one out of nowhere. I was wondering why I felt like dropping the series there and I realized its because this next arc had nothing to do with anything. It's just a place with an event coming up. No one has any connection to it, no antagonists have anything to do with it, I don't even know why this place is even important, but we have to go there....

As for the description in the synopsis. It quickly falls apart and turns into a generic harem reincarnation xianxia story. And the longer the story goes on, the less story and more dense protagonist harem story replaces it. In fact, the story starts out explaining that the protagonist spent all his time training his sister to save his life at the age of 15. Once he gets there, he'll retire and live a quiet life. Then he turns 15 and decides nah, lets keep the protagonist life going. Let's keep giving everything to my sister.

I realize that the story is advertised as: the protagonist is a cannon fodder who trains his sister. But the actual story explains that he's capable of fighting. Maybe not as good as his sister, but he should be able to fight at like 70% of her ability by my estimation. They really never even let you find out because he never really fights. I'm 100 chapters in and I've never seen him actually fight anyone. He practices, he has trained himself just like he's trained his sister, but we never even get to see him try.

But one thing we do know about the protagonist is in regards to his foot massages. Many-a-chapter are spent describing the building of his foot massage store. <<less

The sister literally has no thoughts in her head to do anything not directed by her brother. Everything she says is related to him.

But this is cute. It's no mastermind plot but it's kind of a shut-off-your-brain sort of thing. I wish I could understand why there are suddenly so many different translations for this series. Kinda funky.

It's honestly shocking how good this is considering its a xuanhuan (Chinese novel) .

Theres no obnoxious young master that lust on the mc's girls every chapter. There's no clan elder that purposely finds trouble with the MC for no reason. There's no face slapping to every bystander just to show off. There's no multiple "once in a millennium" event that "coincidently" happens in the presence of MC. No one-dimensional side characters that hate the MC "just because" he's someone from a small sect.

This story is more of an slice of... more>> life rather than a serious fantasy story of hardship and road to immortality. Majority of the characters are normal and pretty nice sometimes hence the lack of action. But because its more on the comedy side and both the author and the translator are doing a great job, it's entertaining as f*ck.

To those wondering why the little sister likes the MC despite his brutal training, it's because he was also participating in that brutal training beside her all the time. He also took care of her when she was sick and practically raised her till she grew up with countless medicine and "treasures" for cultivation. <<less

Really fresh take on the reincarnation trope. MC doesnt try to chase any "heavenly treasure intended for the protagonist" and the girls arent 0 IQ wet rocks falling for the protagonist for dumb reason. The solution to every problem are very unique and comedic. Score: 4.7, highly recommanded.

A very good story about a methodical main character. This story is different to others in that the main character is actually weak and he needs to make plans, for himself and sister. With comedic humor sprinkled throughout the chapters that lightens the mood from time to time. The logic also seems to be consistent so far, meaning no ass-pulls or things that do not make sense.

As of the time of writing, it baffles me that this novel is rated a low 3.9 stars. To preface this, please do note that I am not a professional reviewer/critic and that I feel very strongly about both the rating system and the novel so the post will probably end up reading more like a discursive/persuasive piece. This novel was the veritable straw that broke the camel's back for me as quite frankly nearly all the web novels on or off the site whether they be CN/JP/KR/TH or of... more>> any origin that I have had the displeasure to trawl over this past decade have been written with much less care yet inevitably end up in the rankings with a high rating. This is to the extent that most novels have a higher than 4 star rating as opposed to half a decade ago even if the contents barely form a coherent narrative. When I chanced on this novel I promised to myself that if this dropped below four I would write a review. Never would I expect to actually have to create an account to fulfill this but here I am.

Characters

The novel mainly follows the main character (who will be referred to as "MC" henceforth to disambiguate between the protagonist of the novel, protagonist of the game and the player character of the game) trying to survive as irrelevant characters in a world reminiscent of a cultivation game from his past life. Since he is initially weak he rallies the help of the strong described in the novel as well as minor characters that he encounters during his escapades. The crown jewel of the novel is the chemistry between this core cast. Particularly, the main character of the novel and MC form a dynamic duo due to their complementary personalities --- the former is strong but dumb and the other is relatively weak but remembers the original storyline. This is because the entire core cast is mentally challenged at the start with a few exceptions that also acknowledge this. Somehow the side characters and antagonists have had their intelligence unencumbered. This makes for the endearing interactions as both sides attempt to contribute their strengths and compensate for their weaknesses to best their opposition.

There is also the constant undercurrent of what occurred in the original story. The eponymous junior sister was too weak and too s*upid to escape the first disaster. The three sisters were too distrustful of each other and their father to cooperate. All these characters are given a second chance to develop due to future knowledge from the MC --- some becoming more perceptive and others stronger. I feel the readership is too quick to leap on 'faults' --- when did characters being s*upid become a sin? If characters having flaws and problems arising in the narratives become "plot holes" then this novel is not a great fit --- stories are a two way street there needs to be some suspension of disbelief to accept the foundations of the narrative after all no one is going to enjoy anything if the author has to spend a couple million words to prove every rule until the postulates. I also appreciate that this future knowledge has a soft (as opposed to hard) cause and effect punishment as characters become too reliant on the MC's future knowledge and plans start to fall apart under the wings of the butterfly effect. This is coincidentally quite didactic --- cheaters eventually start failing --- which feels like a breath of fresh air compared to all the system/cheat novels being published nowadays (not to discredit the device as basically anything can be good when done right).

Web Novel Medium

This is one of the only novels that actually leans into the advantages of being a web novel serialised a chapter per day instead of copping the disadvantages only. Each chapter is almost episodic in nature and are purposefully chunked where there is payoff and contribution to an overall narrative. Nearly every chapter has left a smile on my face from surprisingly witty dialogue and occasionally even insightful remarks. It is evident in the writing that the author has made a conscious effort to plan each individual chapter from ending in an arbitrary way unlike most novels. The writing style is also quite succinct to facilitate this plan as opposed to the xianxia novels of the old.

Story

This is an episodic slice of life with a xianxia flavour. The story can be considered generic --- yet sometimes anything but that. Sometimes there are many cliches strung within the span of a few chapters --- sometimes a dry spell of a hundred that pass by. I feel that this is the hallmark of a genuinely sincere story as writers are too preoccupied writing the next big like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones --- prioritising something grand like high fantasy instead of swords and sorcery. Media has instilled a fear of cliches, plot devices and plot holes in writers so they constantly feel the urge to waste words acknowledging, justifying or circumventing cliches or spending an exorbitant amount of their word budget patching an infinite amount of plot holes instead of focusing on the strengths of their story --- and the audience are addicted to trope boarding as a way to evaluate whether they like the story instead of following their hearts. Writers are too risk averse as the barrier to entry has gotten so low people rely on this for a living --- and in their pursuit of this perfection they forget to even write a story. This is to the point that most writers on this platform are out of their depth when writing their complex stories --- simple stories are great that is why pieces like Don Quixote is so widely acclaimed. I am so glad that there are authors that still write past this hysteria.

If the descriptions are a bit vague they are both intentionally and unintentionally that way to prevent spoilers and if I was able to describe the story in so many less words than the actual novel I would have much less praise for the novel. I also had to truncate a lot for brevity.

One of the only reasons why I read web novels is that the authors are willing to take risky ideas unlike more established authors. Obviously this is no longer the case. I was expecting the culmination of this decade for me to be something more but this is probably the most 'enjoyable' (may not be the best written) web novel I have seen. Remember to treat the NU ratings as a barometer for the current demographic's taste --- if it speaks for you then might as well follow it but if not consider some lower rating novels. I therefore give it in my personal opinion a 5 as I have genuinely enjoyed it more than many full novel published books.

Extra

For posterity (not factored into the rating), iNoveltranslation was the first fan translator and has the superior translations but has recently had trouble with site reliability. Ether Reads came later with something akin to machine translation or LLM usage with editing but provides a few chapters in advance.

- The protagonist is initially weak and has relatively decent combat power later on for those that like power levelling novels

- A warning that there is not that much emphasis on romance (not much melodrama)

- An additional warning for people coming for yuri that it is non-existent in this novel.

- There were some jokes about straightening out the protagonist who was gay though this was mainly a character called Xiao Tian who was an ardent supporter of getting her together with the MC. Inferring the author's views from this is a bit of a logical jump I feel but some jokes may seem distasteful.

- The MC (mentally pretty old) first intended to grow old with a young girl (at the time of the transmigration). When actually meeting with this kid most characters thought he acted like a creep which might be a bit of retribution but the main character is definitely a bit morally grey.

- I published this review early, the current rating is tentative and heavily hinges on how the web novel ends (as most do not land on both feet properly). As a precautionary warning my research found that the writer had to cancel writing their next web novel due to health problems but the web novel did stay in rank 1 on SFACG many months after it ended.

- Please do not read this if you are too young as there are some insanely spicy innuendos and some heroines have the libido of a pack of rabbits

Do note that I probably made this out to sound worse than it really is as the novel is more whimsical in nature.

Please excuse all the typos and grammatical mistakes but I hope this gives a bit of insight to why I am so appalled that this is rated 3.9. The only way to judge is to see for yourself and please keep an open mind when doing so --- I feel like I have enjoyed web novels much more when doing so. <<less

Quite enjoyable. If we go by plot, this is really no different from everything else you've already seen, but the characters are likeable. They are very different from each other and each one of their actions emphasize that.

There are several problems that can ruin a good cultivation or harem novel, chiefly: sudden personality change in MC, hypocritical claims and actions, mass produced carbon copy characters and arcs (arrogant young masters and harem members, abusing the same arc formula), loads of technical terms in cultivation and endless grind, r*pe and racism,... more>> etc. So far, I have not identified them here.

The MC himself is quite mature, he's not h**ny for kids like most transmigrated people, and for the same reason he's not h**ny for women left and right - he's even unambiguous in rejecting them face to face. He has clear objectives and does not look away from them. As an example of a typical cliche transformed in this novel:

Spoiler

MC in cultivation novel has to "cure" FL of her poison through s*x. This is a forced plotline when MC and FL have difficulty getting together morally or emotionally or because of extraneous circumstances, and leaves a bad taste imo.

In this novel, what happens is at some point the MC discovers that he has chosen extreme yang techniques to cultivate and thus needs a cultivation partner to offset this, which should've meant s*x. This is hinted at very early, and MC manages it alone for some time until it can't hold on its own. Still, he doesn't actually need to have s*x, only to receive Yin energy through his meridians, which his non-biological sister happens to have in abundance. This gives a pretext for them to sleep in the same bed (without any abnormality) and remain close.

This gives rise to some funny situations and inner monologues from FLs, as well as giving some steam to the harem and romance. Without ever having to actually break that barrier and become r*pe or decisively tying their boats together. It actually felt like a good plotline

[collapse]

The only thing I'd say is tasteless in this novel is treating the original world FL's s*xual orientation as an illness for comedic relief. Even if she was a man, her attitude in chasing women and how low she's willing to bend in order to chase them makes for some funny moments, what I'm criticizing here is specifically that her liking women is treated as some sort of disease that can be cured or a problem in need of fixing. <<less

In one word: tasteful. The story is well paced and payoffs are rewarding. It's well written to the point that I have no complaints with anything, even the various side characters and female leads are all fun and endearing in their own right.

I've read so many works where it seems as if the writer is determined to infuriate the reader with every annoyance, inconvenience and grievance they can think up but in this case the author manages to strike a balance between comedy and traditional cultivation tropes making the chapters... more>> both easy to digest and leaving the reader wanting more. It's one of those rare novels which I read from start to finish in one sitting. The only downside is that now I have to wait for more translations to come out - have I mentioned the translations are excellent as well? So, what are you waiting for? Hurry up and try it out. <<less

Seeing the high reviews and the high ratings you would think this novel tries to reinvent the wheel in the cannon fodder reincarnation gener so when I started reading it I treated it as such well to say I am disappointed is an understatement the only difference this have over other cannon fodder reincarnation is that the original MC have a p*ssy instead of a d*ck and suddenly the h**ny behaviour she displays against anything with ti*s is forgiven but lets say you can ignore this sh*t what you are... more>> left with is plot hole after plot hole if he reincarnated with a system you can understand why he knows a formation from late game area or how can he even with his sh*t cultivation even be able to create it or how does he even know how to create it just from playing a game or even the items to create it are not mentioned how he obtained but let ignore this my main grip is despite having no obligation or a reason to move to next game area with his non existent cultivation he still does to enjoy this you don't only have to turn off your brain you have to get rid of it too maybe if someone binge it he can otherwise it's not worth wasting time on it there's also a lot of other plot holes that I can be bothered to mention like why was he allowed to beat his junior sister up while growing up or how did she even fall in love with him or why does not he notice that she loves him despite all the hints or why despite his knowledge about the game his cultivation is low and slow when I stopped he is 5th qi realm cultivator and that's only because he suddenly went up by two realms or why his parents never addressed his weird behaviour ect..

Ps: f*ck galaxytl for trying to snipe the novel because after a few chapters they might just suddenly abandon it with no heads up. <<less

This starts out reasonably amusing but Pei's ignorance and s*upidity grew more intolerable with time and I started to resent the protagonist for never actually teaching her better. The two characters also have like no chemistry at all, which means any chapter with Pei becomes a drag over time. When they finally have s*x, she has no idea what's going on or what s*x is, which makes it feel like r*pe to me even if she "consented."

The homophobic tone of the novel is as to be expected for a Chinese... more>> novel. However, Feng Yu Die is probably the best character in the novel and is the one who has actual chemistry with Anping. He finds the idea extremely unappealing and she's gay so whatever, until suddenly they're like "but what if she wasn't?"

The protagonist is also a hypocrite, an idiot and kind of creepy. "I want to save my v*rginity for my crush from the game, who is currently SIX, even if it puts my life in danger." And when he has a girl throwing herself at him and absolutely zero reason to refuse even though doing so puts his life in danger, he instead chooses to knock her out, go kidnap his sister and f*ck her while she still doesn't know what s*x is because he refuses to teach her. And because he kidnapped her, several guards go after him of course, which causes the death of several innocent people.

What the f*ck? Disgusting, cowardly and totally unnecessary. <<less

Pretty funny so far. Not anything groundbreaking but so far I've liked how simple it is. This is the kind of series that usually turns out with half the cast collectively sharing a single braincell. The main character is considered talented for a small place while his sister, the protagonist and such are all top talents in the world so he usually has to deal with problems through trickery. Also this should 100% be tagged as harem. For gods' sake he literally already has another girl after him and he... more>> opened a more-or-less massage parlour that apparently makes people moan like they're having s*x. <<less

I feel this is a good novel but it gets quite disappointing the further you read

Some examples

1. Last 100+ chapters are devoted to moon sword sect, given the amount of chapters, it should have been important but it never feels like it is

... more>> 2. Female Characters introduced don't feel important, you get the feeling they will be discarded after the arc or purpose is over.

3. MC always maintains status quo, as a reader you don't get the satisfying feeling of reading a harem novel

4. Apart from the start, there is never a threat or high stakes situation, MC is always in the comfort zone both in action and with the characters <<less

A really well written novel with a very engaging plot decorating with many interesting and lively cast of characters.

The one thing that make this novel really good in my opinion is how the author decorate each scene with characters actions. He really make their character pop out with every little action they took. They not just freeze or silent when they are not in focus. You can actually imagine what they would do in certain situation. Yeah, they might not be a complex and complicated characters but they are certainly... more>> really great characters. This make the story feels actually alive and not just flat.

The only thing of complain is the world building that just seem barebone. It follow the usual chinese cultivation mapping and power distribution. Nothing of note. <<less

As far as cultiavtion, transmigration, harem, and a generic novel title goes, this one is pretty good, which is pretty hard to accomplish when you combine all of these elements. All of the main casts of characters are likeable, (the named side characters have been decent too tbh).

The pacing, while a bit slow, is very tolerable.
Spoiler

The stakes are a bit low, but the novel has been pulling it off pretty well so far

It was alright, way better than a lot of other reincarnated cultivation stories I've read. However, that isn't saying much since the bar is set so low. I liked the MC this time around, he wasn't one of those annoying protagonists who tried to follow the storyline no matter what. Like those annoying MCs who reincarnated as dog-licking villains who try to self-sabotage themselves no matter what to follow the storyline. He is proactive in trying to gain advantageous positions in every plotline he becomes entangled in. As long as... more>> he comes out on top and everything is within his calculations, he doesn't care if deviations arise in the story. But my liking for the MC all came crashing down when he encountered a certain character.

Spoiler

My biggest problem with the MC is the child-predatory vibes he gives off when he finally meets a girl named Xu Xiyue in Chapter 368. To give context, the MC was reincarnated into a fantasy cultivation game he used to play, which is how he knows he is cannon fodder, since the in-game version of the character he reincarnated into died. But when he was playing the game back on Earth, he was obsessed with this NPC named Xu Xiyue, who was a waiter in the Cold Sky Country of the Western Region. He was even calling her his wife even back then. That itself wasn't much of a problem to me. The problem is that once he meets her for real in Chapter 368, she is a 12-year-old girl while he is a grown man. Usually, a normal person would've probably moved on and said it wasn't meant to be, but not this MC. He doubles down and starts staring at her like some creepy stalker, tries to give her cultivation techniques to make her like him as if he's a man in a white van handing candy to unsuspecting children, and even sneaks into her room in the middle of the night when she's sleeping to transfer energy into her while also reading her personal diary. And you want to know what the worst part is? Before leaving, the creep actually proposes to her! He even admits part of the reason he came to the Cold Sky Country of the Western Region was specifically to meet her. He is even bribing her with cultivation techniques just so he looks good to her. Isn't he just trying to groom her at this point? And none of the other girls make a big deal about his behavior either. It's briefly mentioned by Xiao Yunluo how she's only 12, but then it's brushed under the rug like he isn't some weirdo. I don't know what the author was thinking with this plotline, but it's really disturbing. I can have a suspension of disbelief when it comes to the Old Loli since I know she's super old, but not with this.

[collapse]

Other than that, I have no personal gripes with this story. Obviously, this a harem story and there are going to be quite a few girls. None of the girls are annoying, well maybe Xiao Yunluo is a little annoying to me with trying to constantly hide her feelings, but other than her, I really have no gripes with any of the girls, even Feng Yu Die. If you've read any reincarnated Chinese cultivation novel, this is up there with the best from what I've read. <<less

Give it try.

MC was smart and especially not dumb fug dense beta protag about relationship. And not a simp too.

Well, worthy of 4-5 stars but straight 5 for now would not be so bad.

MC is hardcore fantasy otaku character, ain't no simp and honourable even when he is temped by several beautiful womens he stay true to his love which is around 6-7 when he is already around 16 in the story (a bit of a spoiler but who cares).

But as many novel plots goes the downside may be how charming the MC can be to be able to attract almost all the beautiful girls by him being himself... more>> and him having a harder plot armour than the protagonist at times. But overall its a good fitz of novel to pass time. <<less

Unironically very good

Like it's very very good from standards of chinese cultivation novels. Not only we have solid character development for fml's, MC is chad. He understands human emotion, and is always ahead of other characters. Though for plot reason he is oblivious to his junior sister's affection because he see her as a little sister, but he's not pushover. He knows some girls like him and MC tries to draw boundary's with the girls even far as confronting them directly.

Misleading title aside, we get to see MC using his... more>> wit to defeat his enemies. He even manipulates his allies for advantages. Talking of plot, it's refreshing since we don't have someone mass mu*dering everyone because they don't look good in his eyes. He doesn't one punch his enemies directly and sometimes use other people to take care of his enemies. Idk if it's pride or not but I have rarely seen chinese MC asking for others people help, here MC understand his weakness and use his strength to his advantage and You know what it feels good reading it, definitely a solid 4.8 from me. <<less

It's a matter of mindset, really.

Don't read it with a serious mindset. Read it with the mindset that you just came for some nonesense comedy like how you would approach Eminence of the Shadow to past time. You'll enjoy it in your own way.

But stay away if you're not into harem.

If there's anything else I like to note is that it's refreshing to see that the acclaimed world protagonist, not be be confuse with the MC, is a lesbian but it was foreshadowed that she might join MC harem. Oh... more>> and there's a paimon wanna-be. And I like how MC immediately clarifies his feeling when he noticed someone has a crush on him.
