Chu Baiyan finally found a job where he didn’t need to deal with people. He worked at an aquarium, playing the role of a “male mermaid.” During the first “mermaid show” every day, he always saw a handsome man staring at him through the thick glass without looking away.

A coworker recommended a video to Chu Baiyan. The video showed a ceramic plate modeled after him as a “merman.” The resemblance was perfect, and there was a small tag beside the plate that read, “Not for sale, for display only.” Following the address in the video, Chu Baiyan found the pottery shop located right outside his own residential complex, and he was shocked to discover that the shop owner was the same man who came to watch him perform every day.

Yan Anqing’s life was very simple. He raised starfish, made ceramics, and went to the aquarium every day to watch jellyfish. He had always been waiting for SpongeBob, but instead, he encountered a “male mermaid.”

This is the story of the performer who played the “male mermaid” and the pottery artist with high-functioning autism, two lonely people who slowly came closer to each other.

This story had me squealing and kicking my blanket at 3am because it was just so damn fluffy and healing!

The ML is just so pure and straightforward. The descriptions of his childhood made me teary eyed. I'm so glad his wonderful, loving and supportive grandparents never gave up on him no matter how difficult it got. I appreciated how the author, in a fairly short work, gave us a rather nuanced portrayal of a character with ASD because we saw both the struggles and the joys of a person who... more>> often gets lost in their own world. I loved how he believes that the MC was a merman prince who came to the shore just for him and I loved it more that the MC indulges him. It was so sweet seeing how the ML's forthright adoration melts our lonely MC completely and how he in turn, leads the ML into a bigger and more colourful world.

I only wished the novel was longer because I could've easily read about these two embarking on coastal road trips, feasting at night markets, making beautiful ceramics and doing horizontal exercises on the bed for hundreds of chapters. Btw the spicy scenes in this novel hit in a way I didn't anticipate given the mellow vibes but I'm absolutely here for it LOL. In any case, this novel felt like a roasted marshmallow: warm, sweet, and addictive. Highly recommended! <<less

This... is the best thing ever... (Well, for now, till I find my next 5-star read, ahem.)

... more>> I literally love the couple so much; they got together quickly but it felt like they had known each other for years before, the author created such a beautiful love story that'll just have you kicking your feet and screaming. This is LITERALLY the best ever...i love this soo muchhh omgg.

I feel like the author also did a great job with the autistic representation, I felt really bad for Anqing whenever he got bullied or got into trouble just for being different and then his parents abadoning him because of that. Some people don't deserve to be fertile I swear.

His grandma being the star of the show and his boyfriend.... EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS JUST SO PERFECT

No too much drama.. nothing serious.

very sweet

very beautiful and very peaceful

I've only read 2-3 stories with autistic character and this is one of the ones which has great representation. The relationship dynamic is very sweet and doesn't have any major problems.

... more>> The autism aspect isn't just treated as a plot device but as a characteristic it's present all the time not just when needed. The MC is not treated as a burden or as a baby he has full autonomy and the ML knows and respects that.

it's not very deep just a sweet in between read perfect for getting cozy. Not too long not too short it's not boring at all (which I was afraid of) . I loved it <<less

I had high expectations from the reviews but it let me down quite a lot.

Tropes:

  • autistic cute cold to others but loves top MC x reliable introverted yet warm handsome merman actor top ML
First, this story mainly focus on the fact that the the bottom MC has autism. The author describes him as high-functioning autistic, although I'm not an expert at this topic and there's no official medical term for a "high-function" autism, but I dont think the MC here is high - functioning. He cannot understand basic social cues yet... more>> he owns a business, which causes him a lot of struggles. He also don't like to talk to people at all and has a set of believes and rules that he must maintain. He can only talk to customers by following a script that he had memorised

The MC still believes mermans are real because he likes the little mermaid, and still thinks of ML (a underwater merman actor) as a real mermaid. And he also doesn't know the term love or how to have a normal friendship with the top because he never had a friend before.

All in all, this author wrote MC's autism in a very stereotypical way of how autism is perceived in china. This MC was written almost like an adult child, for which he can do daily activities but still mentally acts like a child. And on multiple instances ML is written to help MC on dealing with customers bc MC doesn't like to talk, like almost as if ML became the caregiver of MC. Personally, I didn't like how their relationship mainly focused on ML becoming the caregiver and MC becoming more reliant on ML.

I think this stems from the term autistic in Chinese which is often referred to as "lonely disorder" and is often stereotypically thought of as people that don't like to talk or cannot talk, which I think is not true for most autist.

All in all, not a bad novel. Recommend reading if you like a weak needy bot x reliable top dynamic. Also, for ML it was almost a love at first sight thing which was a bit unrealistic. <<less

Wonderful story, totally recommend giving it a try.

I thought the way the author dealt with the MC being a high-functioning autistic person was wonderful, and that the people around him accepted him as he was made it even better.

And the ML just loved him for who he was and never looked down on him or treated him differently which made me tear up.

It didn't hurt that the story not only had fantastic love but surprisingly spicy bed scenes.

Heartwarming novel! Both male leads' love are genuine and pure making me squeel due to their interactions!!! It also contains a bit of nsfw. In conclusion, a nice novel to pass the time without those extra dramas or a sudden plot twist. Full of fluff.

This story is very good, the MC and ML are adorable together, and the story portrayed the high-performance aspect very well. Even though I have this aspect myself, I felt included, even if it wasn't perfect, it was very well adapted. However, the organization of the chapters on the translation website has some disorganized parts, but nothing that made reading difficult. I also found the ending very rushed.

So fluffy adorable cute story with good description of autism, I loved how author didn't over exaggerate. I pulled all nighter knowing I've a deadline tomorrow and it was worth it.

The MC and ML were both sweet and deserving of each other and the love they shared brought more sincerity, dedication and devotion than what we will ever witness or experience in our lives. This is a very, very good story and I love it despite its simplicity. It also taught me more about autism and how we can be more sensitive and understanding to people who are different from us yet still beautiful in their own way. Very recommended. Such a good novel to read! It is really healing and cute. Also it shows us a beautiful relationship between MC and ML from the very beginning till the end!
