This novel was truly well written. Author Min Ran knows how to pull your heart string. I have never shed so much tear for a novel as I did for this one. I urge you!... yea you passer-by, give this a read despite the silly negative bomb reviews... It is evidence as not a single one of them left a comment.

I read in a forum discussion saying that this novel has a HE but inevitable ... more>>

but I think this kind of ending is so relatable. You can only truly appreciate someone or something when you realize you may lose it someday. Jiang Huaixi was a wonderful lover... how much caring and magnanimous are needed to truly love someone unconditionally like that for 6 years.

In an ocean of people, Lu Zizheng and Jiang Huaixi were lucky enough to have met, to love and to be loved. I feel that you don't need to be with someone until your hair turns white and your teeth has loosen to consider that a love of a life time. Simply, hold each other hand, share each other thoughts, cherish each other presence with no regrets - Suteki Da Ne ?! <<less

I don't understand why this novel has such a low rating, it's as if it was review bombed...

It's a very solid novel about forgiveness, trauma and of course love, more on the serious side but without any unnecessary angst and drama.

There are no useless boring side characters, no annoying side stories/chapters, it's all very well written and to the point, each chapter makes you want to read the next.

I have a read a decent amount of yuri novel and so far this has been the most well written of them... more>> all, granted the translation is superb too and helps alot.

Give it a try and don't pay attention to the reviews, I don't know what is up with that, I myself almost skipped it but found it strange since the title and premise of the novel seemed good so deciced to give it a try.

If you've read ''Her mountain, her sea'' and have enjoyed it even with the bad translation you will certainly enjoy this one too. <<less

Hello There,

I first want to say that I'm a huge fan of this author Min Ran. She is absolutely amazing and I've read almost every story that's been translated by her. This is 100% clearly one of her earlier writings, so please take that into account.

If your a big fan of Yuri/GL novels then I'm sure you've read or you absolutely NEED to read "My Feelings Can Wait" that she also wrote. It is by far the best GL novel I've read and is in my opinion her best... more>> novel.

Now, going back to this novel. Its a solid three to three/half stars at best. Min Ran definitely tugs at your heart strings and makes you feel engrossed in the story, but unfortunately there are a lot of bumps in the story that make your head tilt and the ending is rushed. The high points are though, that you have a very clear understanding of the MC's backgrounds by the end, you may shed a tear, and you do breathe a sigh of relief by the end. Its also very realistic. You'll find that in almost every Min Ran novel she's always trying to keep her characters grounded and human.

I will say though I don't regret reading it because it is still one of Min Ran's stepping stones to becoming the writer she is today. As someone whose read many GL/Yuri light novels I can say I've never been able to drop any of her stories. So, ultimately what I'm saying is if you love this author as much as I do read it, just keep my earlier points in mind. If you don't know this author, this is just a glimpse into her writing skills and be prepared to be impressed more and more if you choose to look more into her. <<less

Holy shit. This story is so well-written. But, if youre looking for something fluffy, this isn't the novel you should be reading. I sobbed so much in this novel. So beautiful yet so heart-wrenching :') this type of plot within the baihe world is so hard to come by. Solid 4.5/5, I would have given it a 5 but the ending felt a bit rushed.

Do you know what one of the greatest mysteries of life is? That this story has an average of 3/5 stars (as of now). To the folks that have given it a 1 star, I wish they had, at the very least, stated why. To have a strong enough feeling to give it such a low rating without saying why is truly very strange! My goal in writing this review is to sway some readers into giving this story a go and hopefully, give it its well-deserved 5 star rating.

There... more>> might be some spoilers inadvertently dropped here and there so please, read at your own discretion. I have only recently realized that the author of this story also wrote My Feelings Can Wait, which is extremely highly rated so I am really flummoxed as to why there is such a dichotomy between the two stories. I have yet to read the other because I cannot bear to start reading a story that will take a long time to get translated... the wait would be too torturous and a masochist, I am not.

First off, the stark warning at the beginning stating that it's MTL dampened my expectations somewhat but I went ahead anyway and boy, am I ever so glad I did. This is probably one of the best written story I have ever read. There have been moments of me squealing with glee because it's just so good!!!! The translation is not bad at all so please don't let that stop you from giving this story a chance.

The relationship between the 2 main characters is refreshingly different from almost anything else I've ever read. They have been friends for many years and both display tsundere characteristics and therein lies the reason that makes this story stand out. Usually, only one of the characters is portrayed as distant and unreachable but here, both are capable of dishing out harsh and reckless sentiments but they also share thoughtful tender moments that make me want to scream because it's just so lovely.

It's not a story that has a lot of miscellaneous characters and drama; the focus is on the MC and her relationship with the FL. I really appreciate that because we get to delve into their complicated relationship and also the complexity of each character's personality. The writing is very clever and I love the moments of humor, too. Frankly, there's not one bad thing I can say about this story. I'm only about a third into it and my hope is that it only gets better and better. I realize that people have different reasons why stories affect them but this story has touched me on a level I haven't felt in some time. I normally don't write reviews unless I feel moved to and if I could, I would give this a hundred stars. lol

Sorry for rambling on so much. This is a wonderful story. Give it a read... you won't regret it.

****

Just had to amend this review as I'm nearing the end. I guess there is quite a bit of drama in this story besides the love story we're all pining for. In fact, it's a tad TOO much drama but hey, beggars can't be choosers.

I still love this story so much. In fact, I'm re-reading it again while I wait for the rest to get translated. This is absolutely unheard of for me because no matter how much I like a story, I always need time in between to want to re-read it.

The author does such a fantastic job of delving into the human condition. There's a certain poetic way she manages to weave her words and it isn't too flowery at all... almost anybody can relate to it on some level, I think.

I'm kinda scared to read the last few chapters because I have no idea if it's a BE or HE and my heart cannot endure if it's the former and I feel like this author doesn't mind tearing our hearts out so I'm preparing myself just in case. Sometimes, feeling pain lets us know we're still alive. <<less

I would absolutely say that this novel is absolutely fantastic!

Never mind the low rating, this story is heart wrenching but at the same time tells us a lot about love and sacrifices.

I would really suggest you to understand and read the story thoroughly, it's amazing!

I'll be honest, as someone who got into GL recently and have been going through quite a few stories, I wouldn't recommend this story to anyone.

I'll admit, I much prefer fluff to drama and angst etc. But I do love when those same things are used CORRECTLY, and in my honest opinion, it is not done correctly here.

I actually have a lot of things I can think of that I didn't like about this story, but I'll just put the ones I think are the most important here. If you're... more>> reading this review and the reasons I mentioned have no impact on you, feel free to ignore it and read to your hearts content, but if it affects you like it does me, I really recommend you give this one a pass.

This is the kind of story that sets up it's MC to have a tragic backstory, but the pay off for said backstory is almost infuriatingly small. I don't even mean it in the 'people who hurt MC should suffer' kind of way. That actually would have been nice as well, but in reality what it means is simply that despite all the heartache I felt while reading the hurt the MC went through, I felt like the method through which the Author describes MC getting over said hurt was GOD AWFUL.

An Example of this here:

Spoiler

MC runs into first love who once reciprocated her affection when they were in high school. A flashback is given about how they end up getting caught while kissing, and one of MC's enemies decides to use this to make things worse for MC at school in general. The flashback ends with MC's first love being coerced out of fear by the bully to spit on MC's face and call her a pe*vert, after which MC's first love leaves and thus ending any relationship between them whatsoever, and leading to the MC trying to commit su*cide, only to end up waking up in a hospital with her wrist heavily bandaged and her widowed mother crying while looking at her while asking if she intended to leave her just like her father did (J.E.S.U.S C.H.R.I.S.T).

After that heart wrenching flashback, the story goes back to the MC's confrontation with this character and the MC herself talks about how hard it is to accept any kind of apology due to how much pain and suffering she endured afterward, but then, as she's about to say something to let this person know how much they hurt her (and probably how she could never forgive her etc.), she see's a watch on her wrist that was given to her by FL for her birthday, and decides that it's not worth it, and tells her first love to forget what happened in the past, effectively moving, and even engaging her in a conversation about love.

... What the actual hell? I'll admit, everyone's different, and I'm far from having met and known every single person in the world, so maybe there's someone out there who could actually do what MC did in this moment, and let me say right now if you, the person taking the time to read this have managed to do such a thing, you are a saint in my eyes and this world doesn't deserve you. But for me, and anyone like me, who could never just drop such heavy emotions because of the feelings she has for someone, who she's not even confident likes her back at this point in the story by the way, reading this is excruciatingly stressful. After getting to know MC's heart wrenching back story and empathizing while hoping there's some kind of justice for this character, this happening is like the Author telling the reader, 'Yeah, just move on pal, the MC doesn't care anymore so why should you?'.

I'm not sure if I should call this a 'trope', but I have seen this same pattern in a few GL stories (there might be non-GL stories but I honestly don't remember since all I've been reading lately is GL), and the usual reasoning behind the 'trope' of the MC quickly moving past trauma inducing memories is because it's the kind of story where there's no 'evil' characters, just people who made 'mistakes'. It almost makes it seem like the Author is trying to go for 'realistic relationships', but my problem with this goes into the second spoiler below...

[collapse]

And here:

Spoiler

The dialogue between MC and FL. If you've somehow reached this far, just know that I personally hope you never communicate with someone you care about the way these two characters communicate with each other. Story be damned, this is simply UNHEALTHY. I don't see anyone mentioning this in the positive reviews for this story which honestly blows my mind because no matter how I think about it, it doesn't make sense at all. From the moment the MC and FL meet, FL talks arrogantly to MC (I guess she's supposed to be a domineering CEO type?), but the problem lies with what comes after. They have a misunderstanding, and FL apologizes to MC, and after some more incidents take place, they become friends, but despite it being clear (to the reader at least) that the FL is trying to pursue the MC, she often makes comments or retorts in ways that implies on the surface level that she doesn't care about MC, and even puts herself on pedestal while comparing each other. This kind of behavior would have been barely okay if it was maybe for the first few months or even the first year that they spent to get to know each other, but apparently the FL keeps up this way of talking to the MC for SIX—I'VE NEVER BEEN SO TEMPTED TO DROP THE F-BOMB—YEARS.

The Author tries to imply that the reason MC puts up with this is because of the actions of the FL, seeming to imply that 'actions speak louder than words', but people, please, don't ever fantasize about having that kind of relationship with someone, it is unhealthy. If you can't bring yourself to speak affectionately to the person you like, do you actually like that person? I can only pray that no one tries to argue that the FL is simply being a tease toward the MC or that she's just being shy as both MC and FL are described as being timid.

Being a tease in this case implies that there's fun to be had from both sides despite one poking fun at the other, but there are many instances of MC getting frustrated with FL's teasing, and not in a 'I wish she would just do something' kind of way, but a 'Why does she have to talk to me like this?' kind of way, only for MC to feel warm afterward by thinking about the 'actions' the FL have taken toward her over the years... What? Is that how relationships work? She speaks harshly to the extent that it cuts me emotionally, but she's nice with her actions towards me so it's okay? Is that what we're going with? I'm sorry but no, that's not how real relationships work, not ones that have actual feelings of love and empathy in them.

As I said before, there are more than these two reasons for me not to recommend this story, but these are the ones I felt were the worst to experience for people like me, and I didn't want to make this post longer than it needs to be (not doing a very good job though xD).

[collapse]

Let me be clear; I understand that everyone is different, and it can be seen by the positive reviews that there are people who love this story. I'm honestly glad for them. If you choose to read this story and love it, then know that I'm glad for you as well. I'm of the opinion that the more stories (or things in general honestly) that you can enjoy, the better off you are. No one wants to be bored, myself included.

But if you're someone like me who is affected by the reasons I listed in the spoilers then please don't read this story.

Yes, it's a fictional story in a fictional world with fictional characters, but the emotions you feel from reading it are real. This story will leave you incredibly stressed, and will not allow you to vent at all. Life is hard enough, and there are much lighter and happier stories out there for you to enjoy (If you haven't read 'Villainess, I'll Pamper You' please do give it a try, it's my personal favourite GL).

If you've read this far then thank you for your time, and regardless, I wish everyone a wonderful day. <<less

It doesn't have the push-pull in the beginning kind of relationship like the other authors novel Long awaited feelings. Their relationship is a cringe from the beginning. Yes they start as unpleasant with each other as stated by the author but the novel started woth then being intimate already which is kind of a drag.

Its good but forgettable.

I don’t think I’ve ever cried as much as I did after finishing a novel. This was a gut wrenching literary piece that explores the complexities of time, mortality, and the importance of love.

Lu Zizheng - She is a woman that has been deeply hurt by her past experiences and trauma. Regardless of how many times life insists on giving her acid lemons, Zizheng remains empathic and kind to everyone - even to the people that hurt her the most. This is not a protagonist that will fight fire with... more>> fire, bur would rather pour water and walk away. She has genuinely made me reflect on the significance of empathy when it’s so rare in a cruel world.

Jiang Huaixi - Wow. The unconditional love that Huaixi gives to Zizheng makes me violently sob because it’s so endearing. She doesn’t ask of anything for Zizheng despite her nature. Huaixi is proud, slightly cold, and hides her sincere intentions with banter and a domineering CEO persona. It’s such a brilliant deconstruction of an overtired trope because Huaixi ultimately wants to do good but doesn’t know exactly how to.

There are many other fascinating characters that you have to read-in-between the lines to fully grasp. You will want to punch the story sometimes but it’s like hitting cotton. For every misunderstanding, dramatic event, and heartache lies a very real, human reason why the characters act the way they do. Spending some time analyzing the why of certain actions and you’ll be left curling on the floor.

My final analysis of the conclusion (heavy spoilers) :

Spoiler

What really sealed the deal with me was their only child. Zizheng is plagued by her constant fear that everyone she has loved, and will love, will abandon her. Regardless if it was due to death or plain cowardice, Zizheng has been repeatedly proven correct until Huaixi. It’s incredibly ironic too, considering that Huaixi has a short life span due to numerous health complications. But Zizheng reconciles with the fact that it was better to love than to have never love because life is too precious to squander its experiences. Huaixi proves this to Zizheng by giving her a child. They both know that Huaixi will die but her love will never disappear because their child is proof of their bond. The ending is bittersweet. The reader is left wondering if it was worth reading a story without necessarily a “happy” ending. But that’s exactly what the story is trying to convey - it’s better to have experienced it for the sake of growing and understanding regardless if the destination ends in happiness or sadness.

[collapse]

This is not a novel for light reading. It will repeatedly punch you in the gut after it showers you with gold. But it’s precisely heavy because it’s human. <<less

Not bad. I wished this was in ancient days though. most dialogs are so cringe I felt third hand embarrassment for these people (thats why I rate it 3 stars instead of 4). BUT- BUT if this was in ancient day, their dialogs would have shot straight into my heart and make me reminisce in their meanings. THESE kinds of dialog belongs in an ancient setting. for a modern day setting? im over here going stoppppp lol. so much goose bumps.

with that said, this novel will give make you experience... more>> the full circle of life and hell. you will have tears, you will laugh, you will feel angst boiling in you. you will feel frustrated etc. I dont really hate anyone. all of these women needs to hold hands and sign up for therapy, this is not a joke.

the characters I love: the one and only with the most cringe words Jiang Huaixi (FL). but if I imagine this girl wearing those Xianxia clothes sitting in a tea house or standing under a peach blossom tree, all her dialogs are to die for. I can even hear my heart beating.

and the other one is xu baihan. XB is such a lovely person, just a total sweetheart through and through. her story is so heart wrenching. her story broke my heart into pieces.

overall, this novel is a not a light read. it touches on life, bully, trauma, identity. how scared school kids can be resulting in them acting in such a way that ruins another's life. regrets, sorrows etc (im not really good with words as ya'll can see).

the ending was...

Spoiler

*flips table* why did the author have to kill my Jiang Huaixi (FL) like that?! even lian xuan (MC's first love) had a bad ending. she is not the best but she isnt bad either. her family is a mess so she is naturally a coward and I understand. she was a kid. the only good ending was xu baihan. I guess one good ending is better than no good ending. im still fuming bc FL died.
