Yu Xiaowen is a broke, defective Omega, with a damaged gland that can’t be marked, so he can’t find a partner. A lonely man with no parents, and now he’s terminally ill.

Self-statement: Looking back on my life, there’s nothing I’m really attached to. Back in high school, I liked an S-class Alpha so much it almost killed me, but he took the love letter I gave him and pinned it on the school bulletin board. Because he thought my actions, and the scent of my inferior kind, were both disgusting.

That man came from a powerful family, and there was a huge gap between us. After graduation, he became even more unreachable. But by a twist of fate, I somehow ended up with a deadly secret of his in my hands…

I’m almost dying. If it were anyone else, I’d let it go. But him…

I want to disgust him one more time.

This review contains slight spoilers!!!

I really enjoyed this omegaverse novel! The ML is definitely a green flag — calm, reliable, and caring — while the MC is a bit slow and awkward when it comes to relationships but incredibly brave as a police officer. He may be clueless about love, yet his sincerity makes him so likeable.

Both characters have communication issues — if they had just sat down and talked, many of their problems could’ve been solved easily. Still, their background difference adds depth: the ML comes from a powerful... more>> family, while the MC is an ordinary police officer and an “inferior” omega who can’t be marked, which fuels his insecurity.

What makes this story stand out is how refreshingly balanced the social hierarchy is. Even though the MC is an omega, no one questions his role as a police officer or treats him like something rare. He doesn’t hide his gender and openly carries inhibitors, and there are even other omegas in high positions — which is quite rare in omegaverse settings. The inclusion of AA relationships was also a nice touch.

The ML’s family is full of lunatics and pe*verts, yet he stays calm and rational, showing great self-control. I also liked how they handled the MC’s sickness — a bit unbelievable, but acceptable since it’s fiction.

The plot is engaging, with only a few small plot holes, and while the ending felt a bit abrupt, it’s still a satisfying read overall. I wish there were extras about their lives. A good novel to pass the time if you enjoy strong omegas, emotionally mature characters, and a world that breaks away from typical alpha-omega clichés.

I don’t want to spoil too much — so just go read it yourself! <<less

Finally, someone’s translating Little God J!

I’m so happy — this author is honestly one of the best to come out of the recent danmei wave. Totally worth the time if you’re even slightly into this genre. This novel is his latest one, and I actually read it in Chinese when it first came out. It’s so good. Sadly, it’s been censored.

The author has such a distinct voice. He somehow manages to mix emotional, soul-deep storytelling with really intense, intimate scenes. It never feels off-balance. He’s just really good at weaving... more>> the emotional and physical sides of a relationship together — like, you feel everything.

Also, translators: please, please take a look at his first novel, The Fall of the Deal. That one is legendary. People literally called it the peak of danmei on Huitang. It completely deserves a translation. <<less

I looked up the raws for this after finishing it and found that the author had actually revised the story. These revised chapters are not what's shown in the current translation. For example, Revised chapter 43 is actually about how ... more>>
Spoiler

The ML, Lu Kongyun reacts after the MC goes MIA, and subsequently finds out about his terminal illness, discovers the love letter, and he even builds a nest. This is more in line with future events where he warns MC about nest building behavior, and why he's so traumatized by the MC not being by his side.

[collapse]

Basically, chapters 43-60 plays out differently, I skimped to ch 59 and it was WILDLY different. So do check it out.

Apparently, this is the 3rd installment of a series the author is writing, the "Jiangcheng Universe". She also wrote a separate entry called "Jiangcheng's notes" which contain additional info and side stories.

CW: Inc*st

Spoiler

The side couple, Dai Lanshan and Dai Jingxi are brothers. It's implied that they are not blood related, as their marriage registration was accepted, so most likely one is adopted. But this issue is not explained much in the story.

[collapse]

Ye Yisan × Lu Qifeng

Spoiler

Their relationship went nowhere despite all the tension. Instead, Ye Yisan is just the target of everyone's jealousy (Lu Kongyun and Dain Lanshan think he's their lovers' mistress). Its hinted by LKY at the end that LQF probably likes YY, and despite them saying its because YY escaped, LQF was already smitten before then. When he marked YY and he didn't get the expected reaction, he had already obsessively been watching him. Also, they have a family history of AxA obsession. Sadly, YY is traumatised by the encounter, sees their reunion as worse than death, so most likely they'll never reunite... still disappointin though.

THIS.

Is such an UNDERRATED treasure!

How the hec.. but when I read the description, I actually understood... The description is cr*p...

... more>> No, but seriously, the story just has such a unique voice, compared to every other popular story...

The MC - is a police officer, as an omega. I didn't expect him to be such a badass!

The ML - a doctor from your typical wealthy family, but the way that his world is being shaken by the story-progress...!

What I actually liked about this story is that it just swallows your attention - from start to finish - and always keeps the tension, the pacing, the emotions in a perfect synchron, keeping your soul as if by hot glue

.... is Definitely a MUST read, Definite ReRead, and if you haven't already, just give the first chapter a try.

Idk how isn't this more popular....! <<less

UPDATE 5/6: XIAO SHEN J HAS FINISHED REVISING THE NOVEL ON CHANGPEI!! Novel is now 97 chapters long!!

Updated review:

I reread this novel after the revisions were completed, and let me say, this novel really turned from one I had some issues with when finishing to now feeling entirely satisfied by the conclusion. The second half of this novel was the weak point before, and that's where all the modifications were made, which ended up transforming this somewhat stilted pacing and awkward relationship development into something really so much better. The... more>> story flow is much more cohesive now, from the action scenes, to the plot development, to the romance itself, and I really found it so much more emotional reading this the second time, to the point where I actually even ended up crying rereading scenes before I even got to the modifications.

The romance line is even stronger now, and I loved all the little moments between the two in the last arc of this novel, with a lot of witty dialogue and fast paced exchanges that are typical of xiao shen j's writing style. I love her way of writing dialogue, and the revisions gave the couple much more time to actually interact with one another as more than ten chapters were added basically just to develop their relationship after all the dramatics. We get to see a lot more of their insecurities and how they work past their relationship issues with each other, and the confession scenes are much more impactful with the added devlopment.

Both characters are also given more backstory, especially Yu Xiaowen, who had scenes added with his family in the past, and also more scenes showing his interactions with Lyu Kongyun in the past, helping explain just why his crush developed and how he was able to hold on to those feelings for so long. Lyu Kongyun's emotions also were given much more of a spotlight this time around, and his feelings for Yu Xiaowen explained in a lot more detail and depth, adding a lot of humanity to his character where it was slightly lacking before.

I also feel like the plot itself was pulled out a bit to make it less crazy and over the top, as the action scenes were described in a lot more detail and also in a way that was genuinely believable. There was no point in rereading this that I felt like the characters were doing things that were impossible to comprehend, and I really enjoyed the changes that were made in the pacing, and also the modifications in dialogue to help amplify the emotional tension.

Only thing still missing is my AA side cp, but alas they're so toxic that really for them to end up together would take an entire other novel of wife chasing and s*um gong repentence lol. My rating of this novel is definitely going up from what I had rated before, as with the revisions it really is a near perfect novel now, at least from my experience reading. I loved everything about it, and I'm actually glad I read the pre-revision novel as well just so I can compare a bit and really see what makes this new version so good.

For my original review (mostly still relevant) :

One of the funniest novels I've read, starting off with a hilarious premise of a terminally ill police officer blackmailing his crush with his father's s*x tape, and said blackmail basically just being for the other man to text him "goodnight sweetheart" and pay more attention to him LOL. The novel is generally pretty lighthearted at the start, but the plot develops quite sharply around the midpoint into more of a thriller crime type novel, with many darker themes and twists. Characters are tortured and left in near death states, but I will say that the tone of the novel was so lighthearted that it didn't really feel like it was that serious for a lot of it.

In order to really connect with these characters, you really do have to read between the lines a lot and figure out what they truly mean behind all the bluster and fake cheer, especially with the main character Yu Xiaowen. He tends to put on a very fake facade around the ML in particular, with his crush on Lyu Kongyun being the driver of much of the plot, and it only really is revealed just how little he thinks of himself around the midpoint to the end of the novel, in which he treats his life basically as disposible, and has many scenes where he does genuinely end up breaking down.

The ML is also very much the repressed type on the outside but pretty much just as crazy as Yu Xiaowen on the inside. Though he doesn't typically say what he's feeling, it's usually pretty obvious in his deadpan stares just how done with Yu Xiaowen's he is, and his silence really is always so loud haha. I liked his character at the start, but really fell completely for him by the end, with all his hilariously timed moments of cutting dry humor, and his utter devotion to Yu Xiaowen. He has such an interesting personality, and I really just enjoyed how dimensional of a character he was for how little he spoke.

Their relationship may start as blackmail, but honestly, Lyu Kongyun is entirely complicit himself in allowing for the blackmail to even happen, as it turns out he really does not give a sh*t about his father in the first place. Yu Xiaowen has quite the hard time understanding this fact that Lyu Kongyun could possibly be sticking around him for any reason other than being blackmailed, and there is a bit of a misunderstanding between them in the ending arcs due to Lyu Kongyun's inability to speak and Yu Xiaowen's inability to respect his own worth, but it never felt annoying as it was honestly just more funny than anything else to read, and was also resolved quite quickly.

Plot-wise it does get a bit intense around the midpoint, with much more action than relationship development, and there's a bit of a separation arc between the main CP, with a hidden identity trope and another misunderstanding between them, which eventually gets resolved as Yu Xiaowen is exposed. While I did find a lot of the plot to be a bit over-the-top and sometimes past the point of realism, the characters themselves really are so likable that I was still invested in the story regardless. The overall plot was pretty easy to follow and I did enjoy how it wrapped up, with Lyu Kongyun and Yu Xiaowen finally achieving their HE after everything.

The romance is definitely satisfying for the main CP, though I'll admit I got unhealthily attached to one of the side CPs which by the end I'm still not even sure is even a side CP, but I'm definitely feeling an extreme lack of closure from their story. I'm being so serious when I say that I'm in love with Lyu Qifeng and I don't care how many issues he may have and I need him to chase back his wife ASAP—I would do anything for a continuation of his storyline.

There was also an in*est side CP, that was mostly just there to be funny and not much else, but it was definitely entertaining nonetheless, with the crazy, obsessed with his ge, younger brother, and the fairly silent and resigned older brother. I didn't get too attached to them as a couple though as it didn't feel like the older brother even liked his didi back, and was more just tolerating his clinginess because he had no other choice lol <<less

Not perfect but I gave it a 5 star ⭐️ because it hooked me to the last chapter. After reading so many webnovels, my drop rate has kinda increased. I barely finish any. But this one had a proper story, nice world building and interesting side characters.

The main characters aside from their communication issues (which is sometimes infuriating 😅) are very clever and likable.

Anyways, the solid story made up for everything.

A good story, albeit being a bit slow, overall it was interesting.

It was a different take on the whole ABO setting. An omega who can't be marked and an alpha who hates the way pheromones influence him, making him act like an animal.

Omega is a valiant police officer who is diagnosed with terminal illness and alpha a quite researcher. To fulfill his last days on earth he approached the target of his unrequited love using blackmail forcing him to do a bunch of silly stuff that a normal couple would... more>> do like sending good night messages, eating out together, going on a date to the beach etc. LKY finds him inexplicable at first but then ends up falling for him slowly.

There is character growth for both ML and MC. ML is repressed doesn't know how to deal with YXW. He doesn't realise how important this omega has become till losing him. I also feel he got to understand MC during this time. YXW on the other hand has inferiority complex from his genetic disability. The comments he heard from ML and his brother during middle school and his love letter being pinned on the notice board compounds those feelings. (I really hated his brother. Infact, I hated all of his family.) On top of all these, he is dying. Even after coming back he believes that LKY will never like him. From MC slowly changes his mind.

Interesting plot. I did feel that some parts were a bit tedious and the rhythm was slow, but I wanted to see their relationship get a good conclusion so I kept on. <<less

Sorry but I really struggle to understand how can anyone see the gong as some shitty a**hole, he's literally so polite to the shou even when shou blackmail him, he care and worry about the shou's heath even before knowing his story and never once look down on him for being a damaged gland omega (low bar but it's omegaverse where a**holes are everywhere) and even try to advocate for omega rights too?? Like I can understand if you just outright find him boring etc but shitty personality?? Cold... more>> hearted when he's just akward and he show his emotion many times thoughout the story too? Like the review just make no sense that I have to ask myself "did we even read the same story"?

About the story, it's fine but not as good as the author's previous work (Fallen Trade) for me, like it's so good that I have spend 2 years to just reread it over and over again because I absolutely fall in love with the way the author portrays the characters, make them feel like actual people instead of too perfect to the point they feel inhuman like in other danmei, I dont really see that in this story though

Spoiler

The story starts off with our MC, a cop, who during the course of his police work, discovers something related to ML. He then uses it as leverage to blackmail ML. As they spend more time together, I felt like all their meetings were like dates... haha. Because to our MC, who has a terminal illness, this was his last chance to be with his secret middle school crush, so he took it.

ML is a scholarly type who does research at a military facility. He has no time for MC's nonsense. Due to MC's unrestrained behavior and the types of orders he gives to ML, he tries anything to get out of it, but MC has nothing to lose.

MC is dying. A whole lot happens, but the gist is that he goes in a mission and is heavily injured and drugged, and he almost died. Instead, someone picks him up and saves him, curing his terminal illness with experimental drugs from another country. He makes the decision to relocate for treatment, except everyone thinks he died, and died a traitor.

Yup, long separation of about 2 years happens. ML finally sees MC, but he has a new name.

All this time, ML has suffered from a pheromone disorder, but he has never given up on trying to find MC and clearing his name. He has never been the same sinve MV disappeared. Clearly, there are feelings on both sides now.

Yu Xiao Wen is a police and a low tier omega. As he cannot be marked, he hasn't had any partners all these while. When he found out that he has a terminal illness, luck gave him a chance. He got hold of an incredible information that is of importance to his secret crush that he has liked since high school. Using this information, he blackmailed him to get close to him one final time.

While Yu Xiao Wen acted light hearted and kept joking around with ML, the whole plot... more>> still feels sad because you know that he did all these because he is dying soon. He hinted so much in his speeches and it really makes me feel so much for him. He is in the major crime unit and as a leader, he is strong and faithful to his job, so when you know he would die eventually, it is really heartbreaking. The ML is a biology doctor, he seems stone-faced but sometimes his sentences make me laugh so hard. This story reminds me a lot of Imprisoned In Eternal Night, but more action packed. <<less

Spoiler

I always love unrequited love stories. I also find it wholesome when the ML would fall harder than the MC. There were a lot of misunderstandings in this story, so it may not be everyone's cup of tea. The misunderstandings mostly come from the MC; it's not that he's slow in realizing the ML's feelings, rather, he just doesn't want to assume the ML also loves him. I mean, he's been in love with him since middle school, and their real conversation even started as a blackmailer and a victim. Even so, the duration of when he comes to terms with how the ML feels about him was really too long, so it felt draggy for a bit.

Since the MC is a police officer, then expect that this will involve him solving cases. I did find it not exciting, though.

Anyways, as for my rating, it's still 5 stars since I love the ML and MC's dynamics.

Well, I didn’t enjoy this book at all. I don’t really like both main characters; Lu Kongyun and Yu Xiaowei and most of all, I hate how they start their toxic and red flag relationship of theirs with a blackmail. Like, what’s wrong with plain old vanilla “Hey Lu Kongyun, I know you might know me but we used to be classmates in middle school” or something like that ffs. Also, I don’t and can’t feel Lu Kongyun’s (gong) love and sweet feelings for the shou at all, even after... more>> they finally got together. All I see a cold-hearted, stiff, and brooding man that doesn’t know how to smile and has an absolutely shitty personality all year round. And for Yu Xiaowei, I don’t like him either. What gives him the right to blackmail his old crush to trick him into spending time together with him before he dies from cancer? If only he approached Lu Kongyun casually, I swear the story will be so much better.

Why did the author write them like this? Why is the story plot all over the place? Why is everyone so infuriating? Where’s the romance?

Ngl I have quite a lot of questions to ask but I’m too lazy to write them all down here lol. I’ll give another extra because at least it has a good ending but they did become a legit canon couple at end with only about 5 chapters of the both them finally being lovers ONLY???? *Sigh*

Let’s hope and pray that my next danmei read is a good one again. *Huge sigh* <<less

Ugh, the ML should've gone to a psychologist instead. He really has so many psychological problems, not bcs he's an A.

Beware : I really just want to rant. Potential spoilers in my comment idc. Should've rated it to 2 stars, missclicked. Regretted immensely

He can't really identify his own emotions. He can't differentiate why he wants be intimate with the MC and blames everything to his animalistic urge (of being an A). He even asked his doc why he wants to "do" the MC. Like, "is it bcs I'm out of... more>> control of my animalistic urge?" Really?? It's bcs he's the omega you like, who can arouse you without much effort, u dumb *pippp*.

Even until chap 74, after being repeatedly asked by the MC, why he did all of this for MC, for clearing MC's name, for potentially damaging ML's name, for handcuffed him to himself so the MC can't run, to let MC discover of his illness due to MC's absence, he just keep silent. The MC practically asked him if the ML likes him back. EXPLAIN IT, SAY YOU LIKE HIM, GODDAMIT AAAAAAA SO FRUSTATING AAAAA

ML's blockheadness and muteness is being paired with MC's inferiority complex. Nice, superb.

The ML is supposedly to be a genius researcher in biochemical field if im not mistaken, which I understand how impressive he's bcs our field is somewhat similar. BUT HE ACTS LIKE A BIG DAMN BLOCKHEADDD AAAA. I'm embarassed of each times of ppl mentioned him to be a great researcher. *piip* *pipp*. I really want to say bad words rn. He's even a colonel and can fight against a pro notorious killer while being under drugs! Damn bcs he's a S-class A he's so impressive and can do it all but he's such a dumb block headddd AAAAAA T_T

I really pity the MC. He really works alone for this relationship's progress to his ass, damnit. The ML is really passive for this relationship's progress. Please note, progression. He acts but he never clarify. "Im just doing this so my life can get back to normal" nyenye bs

Even until the last chapter I really can't feel ML's love. He's still too cold idk

I'm impresed of myself for even finishing this wow. <<less

Highly recommend reading the author's rewrite from Ch 43 (still ongoing) ! The raws are free~ Just make sure to choose the correct novel option bc the rewrite was published separately from the actual novel (for now). It's really good and resolved the small issues I had with the original version which felt a bit incomplete to me.
