Alpha x Alpha
Lu Heyang x Xu Ze

Xu Ze had thought hard about it, and the only thing he and Lu Heyang had in common was that they were both alphas with the highest pheromone level in the Union Preparatory School.

Apart from that, the two of them had no resemblance or relation whatsoever.

This novel is beautifully written, and the emotions are subtle but very tender. The beginning reads a bit like a fever dream, as MC is an unreliable narrator in some ways, but the writing evolves along with MC as he starts to open up emotionally. Though it's an omegaverse, the ABO isn't too prevalent of a plot device, especially since the main couple is AxA.

The premise of the novel is a bit cliche, featuring a rich ML from a powerful family and an orphan MC who does all sorts of... more>> odd jobs to pay off his grandmother's medical bills. ML encounters MC a few times at school, as they're both 17 year old prep school students, but really starts to pay attention to MC when he discovers him boxing in an underground fighting ring. The relationship begins very naturally, with MC already crushing hard and ML unable to take his eyes off of MC. It takes a while for them to confirm feelings despite the relatively quick progression of their relationship, as MC expects basically nothing from ML and ML is constrained a lot by his family situation.

MC's inferiority complex runs deep, and the way he loves is extremely self-sacrificial. As long as ML is happy, he's willing to suffer himself, and he never asks for anything from ML. Any problem MC faces, he must solve it himself without bothering those he loves (i.e. ML), and it takes a lot for him to admit he needs help. It's not a pattern that is easy to break, and he can be frustrating at times with just how many secrets he carries on his own. Despite his flaws, MC remains a very likable character, and his strength despite his trauma and life circumstances are so admirable.

I really appreciated how ML was able to accept MC as he was, without needing the other to change for him. ML understands MC's need for privacy and agency, and he does his best to keep MC safe while also not being overbearing. Both are very consistent in their actions, and have well defined personality traits and realistic motivations. They're both subdued around others, but ML does become more animated and even teasing when it's just the two of them. The dynamic between them is so sweet, I really enjoyed it!

ML's two best friends provide hilarious background commentary, with one being entirely oblivious and the other being quietly supportive. They're developed enough to feel real while not taking the plot focus away from the main two characters. The side characters in this novel are all similarly interesting and add a lot to the overall plot.

There's a time skip in the second half of the novel that can probably be deduced from the tags, and expect a good amount of dogblood:
Spoiler

The actual time skip and separation lasts all of one chapter, so there's not too much angst to bear with. The circumstances leading up to it were as dramatic as I expected, and I honestly didn't get as emotional as I expected to just because of how dogblooded it all was. I do love a long separation time skip, but I will admit that the amnesia added just a bit too much unrealistic drama for my taste.

[collapse]

The fanart is for this novel is also gorgeous, kudos to the translator for linking it! <<less

It was sort of I already started it, let's try to finish it before coming up with a review.

But 30 is really the limit. I know this was subtle, no dub- con. MC like ML and obviously though unstated, ML do knows it. Takes advantage of it. And all of that is not bad since again MC likes him.

But gosh. Why do they make theC too shy? Too innocent? Too honest?

At times, when ML was teasing MC, I want to punch something. I get that it might be an interesting... more>> and adorable thing for ML but he's an ALPHA!

Aside all that intro of only 200 S level in their school which is composed of the elites, top members of the society.

There's MC having a hard time controlling his feelings and there's ML too dependent on the wristband.

I get the ABO theme was needed to clarify the Alpha and Alpha pairing.

It's great that despite MC being that beat up, ML didn't restrict protect and avenge him.

He does respect him by doing only the after care. Not meddling with the decision.

But why. Why does a bottom Alpha need to have the god given submissive qualities.

He listened too well! Like why?! I get he like ML, and it was stated he knows ML is not perfect.

But seriously, what did you even liked about him? I get he is attracted. I can't consider the pheromones factor since ML was and has never been out of control with it and was trying to intimidate MC with it.

Even the cage fight. It was a good element, the other little details between and after the fight.

But bruh. I hate the fact that ML was leading MC but he play pretend. It's annoying. I get that he wanted to break MC shell, or saw the initiative but he really be pushing it and the fact MC is "okay" with it. Unsuspecting?

Where's that brain at? Someone commented it right.

Pitiful. What a pitiful MC. The fact he overlook it because he never even imagine it can happen. That the Alpha he likes will pay attention to him and even reciprocate his feelings.

I hate that although ML never strongly disagree but his passive aggression is nerve wrecking.

And truly. Why does ML even liked MC? I don't and won't even accept if it was a romantic cliche reason of falling in love.

It doesn't feel that way. It felt like ML was a big closet sad*st dom and MC just fits the bill of the complete and total sub.

Which is sad. He gets beat up and endure in silence but he lets ML do whatever he wants.

It's sad. Since that only means he was that grateful ML even pays attention to someone like him.

It's distressing. The fact I'm this bothered meant it was greatly written, then sure. But I don't think I'll finished this. <<less

Thankful for the translation that brought me to push through and finish the book with the raws. A super rare AA story but gosh it was a good read. MC and ML probably felt like they belonged in totally different social circles and their lives would never touch but the fact that it collided was almost like fate.

I was skeptical about how the story would go especially with all the ... more>>
Spoiler

not so legal aspect of MC being in an underground fighting ring. The desperateness of his situation did not bode well for the story and was like a powder keg ready to explode. ML also has a terrible family life (just his father, really) and so many mind games ongoing there. But after the super duper angsty section leading to the cliche time skip, the part after that just wraps the story up into that big HEA.

[collapse]

I really liked that MC
Spoiler

was actually the one who liked ML first. Like a subtle crush and then ML slowly notices him before their attraction finally collides. While neither are super talkative or have the banter sort of relationship, their relationship was still really beautiful to see.

[collapse]

There were important side characters as well, particularly ML's 2 buddies, MC's friend and grandma and some others. I understand that there is a story for 1 of ML's buddy that's currently in progress but
Spoiler

I'm more interested to know what happens between HW and CXH?? Their dynamic seemed more interesting.

[collapse]

The ABO aspect was well-written into the story and finally there is a male omega father.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and characters and that HEA was just perfect. <<less

A beautiful, tragic, bittersweet story that shines via its side characters no less than though its main pair. A story about surrendering to circumstances but also about fighting a helpless battle to the end; about children locked in life trajectories with no control over their fate, and about giving up on everything in the name of freedom. A story about waiting with no expectations of ever meeting again, and yet eventually finding each other and regaining what was lost.

It's a typical romance welling up between a guy with persistent unwavering crush melded with terrifying rationality of not hoping anything in return or any future, and another guy who is gradually touched; from curiosity to deep seated affection.

Spoiler

Though ML was instantaneouly attracted towards MC while seeing him fight in the ring as everytime he needed to readjust his wristband.

[collapse]

But the fact that I didn't skipped chapters as there weren't expressive emotional scenes and dialogues, as both of them were stoic and quiet beings, with the ML being a bit more proactive in the relationship.

The novel was well written with the right pace, it drowned me in mellow and subtle feeling and warmth, throughout the story.

Spoiler

But the fact that their childhood encounter was left out and was only recollected by MC, and had no further mention in entire plot made me bit dissatisfied.

This wasn't as angsty as I had expected from reading the comments (I was a little scared)

I loved every moment of this story, even the parts I wasn't expecting to like. I had told myself I'd skim over anything too painful but turns out everything was so well written I couldn't bring myself to miss any part of it!

The translator did an amazing job and made the great story very enjoyable to read.

This is one of my best novels so far. Both the MCs and supporting characters are interesting and the plot is also good leaving one with no regrets as every one find their freedom from the shackles of the high society where power determines the life of others and the struggle a person must go through to free themselves. Also I like the MC the most especially his personality which is humble, he doesn't expect much as long as the ML is fine which is a trait not found in... more>> many MCs and also his innocence is what drew me to finish this novel. I really appreciate the author and translator for bringing us such a story. <<less

The book is really well written, still wondering why it gets such a low rating. You can see how they get attracted to each other gradually and you will have no choice but to love our precious MC, he's strong, smart, and also a bit silly to ML. I'm not good with words but you'll love it if you're looking for romance with an edequate plot (politics)

So far I LOVE THIS STORY SOOOOO MUCH

This gives off the vibe similar yet different from "I Like Your Pheromone" combines with "Sa Ye". The tag is 'school life' but actually has more depth and complex stories. And it also contains quite certain amount of ANGST (yes that's my favorite part lol) Idk why but this work made me feel somehow bittersweet and suffocating (in a negatively positive way) while reading it.

(I got reminded of those feelings when I was reading "Form of Sympathy", yeah like that, bittersweet and... more>> suffocating lol) <<less

I am very sad writing this review because if you asked me a while ago when I started reading this, I would give it a five-star right then, but after reading and suffering while doing so, I decided to give it 3 stars. I have never seen a novel this flat. It ended the way it started, no progress, no development. I am utterly dissatisfied and disappointed with the outcome. After the 95th chapter mark, I began to skim it because I got so fed up with the repetitiveness of... more>> it.

The story and the tropes are interesting and I don't think I ve ever seen another ABO alphaxalpha dymnaic like they have but its not even about the execution. It's the characters, I am so disappointed that I started to hate the characters. Xu Ze's constant passionless behavior irks me so much. How can someone be this unlearning and unchanging? Have you not learned anything?

I liked the first part of history so much, it's not the halfway mark because the second time skip happens way later, like after ch 70 or something, and I was so close to dropping it. I even took a break for one month, then got back and finished it. Still, the second part is literally no different from part one, SAME PLOT SAME PROGRESS SAME OUTCOME! (It's a HE but still)

Spoiler

I don't hate Xu Ze, but why is he so weird? I get it, that kind of stationship would wreck me as well, and he waited for 7 years, NOT EVEN WAITED, as it is also said in the novel, he never really expected anything, and went ahead with his life. And when they met again (shocker, I know what a fate right?), he didn't even go after Heyang. He would've been fine with them not crossing paths after one time of encounter. I would've loved to see a bolder and greedier Xu Ze, making Heyang more interested in him, but no, he is a robot.

And don't even make me start with the amnesia trope, at first when I was half way through it and read about their childhood relationship I though that was the amnesia trope because if I had known that he would forget about Xu Ze once again and they would break connection I would have dropped it without a hesitation. You can't use the same plot for 3 TIMES FFS! It gets repetitive and boring and feels like lazy writing.

If Heyang didn't get kidnapped and didn't forget about Xu Ze, they would have to break up eventually, but this only made things worse, it made it so that because of the situation that they had to break up and that's fine but couldn't the author find another excuse? Heyang forgetting everything, AGAIN???

If we were at least able to read the smut, I would be more content with it. Would shut my mouth and read and endure it to the end. Because they are at it like rabbits. At the end, when they finally reconciled AFTER Heyang remembered they didn't go out for 4 days, I think doing it day and night. I WANTED TO READ THOSE PARTS! I know this doesn't have a smut tag, but before that, some scenes weren't that cut short. I was annoyed that they had a moment, and it cut to them being finished 3 times back to back.

Before that, when they were Colonel Lu and Dr. Xu, and meeting/getting close, it was literally the same thing. The second you think they were about to talk and open up to each other someones phone would be ringed or they have a mission or a meeting and Heyang had to leave Xu Ze for the nth time I WAS FED UP!

There were 10 chapters left, and they still weren't together like wtf?

[collapse]

Before finishing, I was considering reading the other couple, but after finishing it, I don't want to. I really don't. I wanted this to be good because it is different from any other danmeis out there that I cannot argue, but I feel sad that it has come to this. I wouldn't recommend anyone to read it even. I am not being petty. If it seems interesting to you, go and read it; no one is stopping you, but after that, I am curious about your thoughts. This danmei is very open to discussion, I think. <<less

Sooooo, good novel.

The translator was amazing, the author was profound, the characters did get character development, the main couple had chemistry and the side characters were lovable (one of the friends has a novel of his own, DEFINITELY check it out)

....

So, why the 3 stars?

Don't get me wrong, the novel was great, but it was not MY type of novel. I will explain what things were good but not my preference, so you can determine if you will like it or not.

  1. It is really dogbloody, like, the kind that makes sense, but still VERY dogbloody. I am not a fan of shitty upper-class families that believe they are above everything else and will make everyone suffer, and the father of the ML was straight up horrible, you WILL hate him, no questions asked. But it is a bit dramatic, many of the things could have been avoided with simple communication, which leads me to my second point.
  2. Misunderstandings trope at its FINEST. These two communicate horribly or don't communicate at all, although it does get better at the end of the story it is still a mayor plot point. MC's inferiority complex is wild, it makes him lie abt his pain and suffering while considering himself unworthy, so it is milestone for him to actually communicate. The ML really complements this and forces him (in a healthy way) to express himself, which generally balances the situation. The problem is when the ML underestimates the situation and decides to temporally not clarify what's happening to the MC (which underestimates the capacity the MC has to misunderstand him). So it is not miscommunication in the sense of "I don't trust you so I wont tell you" but instead "I trust you, so I don't think I need to tell you". Overall this problem does get solved, and it was not infuriating, but it was still very present in the story.
  3. The beginning of the story is a bit confusing, as you realize you are being kept in the dark abt a lot of things. The MC is an unreliable narrator at first, so the start is like "????" and "I'm missing something". Later it gets clarified, but for me it was a bit hard to keep up (my personal issue, I am B A D at complex plots)
  4. Oddly specific, but I discovered I'm not a fan of long separations. I hadn't read one before, so I was like, amnesia? long separations? lets give it a try.... and it was sad, really sad. The protagonist doesn't fell bad, which made me feel even worse in his place. If you somehow find yourself in the same situation, then I suggest you not to try starting with this book.
  5. Finally, even if the characters had chemistry, they where both very quiet people. So like, two introverts. They talk and such but the majority of the time is spend in comfortable silence. I'll admit I liked this, but I am used to having at least one obnoxious protagonist, and I like that, so if you are used to reading those types of characters, don't expect them here. (probably the only exception is 1 friend side character, the rest are all very reserved)
Overall it was cute to see how destiny constantly brought them together, despite the MC having ABSOLUTELY NO FAITH ... more>>
Spoiler

Destiny in the sense they kept finding each other. The ML even forgot him 2 times, and in the 3 "first meetings" he fell in love over and over again.

[collapse]
So it was satisfying to see them together, and they are overly very compatible and all.

Probably not my favorite, and I won't reread it. But a good novel nonetheless. Its abt personal taste.

I hope my review helped you identify if you'll like it! <<less

My first Alpha x Alpha novel. Has amnesia plot. Xu Ze (MC) has a secret crush on Lu He Yang (ML) for many years. MC while seemingly passive most of the time, he does grab onto chances to get close to ML when he can. MC was easily satisfied by just looking at him from afar, occasionally small interactions would make his day. I feel sad for how "small" he felt compared to ML's society standing. He was very slow to realise that gradually ML also showed interest in him.... more>> The dogblood family politics, the angst and sourness tugged at my heart, MC was so pitiful and ML was really a darling towards MC all the way. I love the way the author described the changing seasons, and how they see each other during their high school days vs now. The three friends were also the best, they really stood by each other all these while. Each of them will find their other half and Gu Yun Chi has his own ongoing story Imprisoned in Eternal Night now which is really good too. The only unfortunate thing is this novel doesn't have explicit smut but the story totally makes up for it. <<less

I don't usually read omegaverse but this really stole the show for me!! Just bare in mind the pairing for this novel isn't your normal AO but it's double A! (Alpha x Alpha)

The story starts out during high-school whereby we are introduced to the ML and MC in their 1st encounter, the MC is a somewhat stoic but as you read the novel you'll realise how much of a cutie pie he is!! His high-school days aren't always the brightest and his backstory is somewhat angsty. The ML on... more>> the other hand comes from a well-off family (Government official) and takes care and helps MC a-lot during their High-school arc (1st 2/3's of the novel).

The contents of it during the high-school arc are really fluffy (There's angst too) but eventually, the main CP will have a fallout whereby they are separated for years. But do not fret. They get back together at some point after their fallout! (Not gonna spoil too much)

The ML is a sweetheart, honestly always teasing the MC!! ToT Our MC is also a very loveable character he's hard-working and resilient and doesn't tell his problems to the ML (which is why ML teases him a-lot).

Besides than the main CP the side characters are also extremely well written I love the MC's best friend alot because he is truly just one of the best friends you can ever ask for!! Although he also has his own flaws.

Overall, I loved how the plot is developed for this so this deserves a solid 4/5 from me! <<less

it's so f*cking good.

tbh I don't rly like school life novels bcs it feels childish (?) but this one is awesome. It might be due to the setting (rich kids/abo) so the classes/school don't take up alot of the plot. But I like it nonetheless and hope to find others like this too.

the tension between the leads are so high and I giggle like a teenager w raging hormones every single time. F*ck. It's a first for me, reading about these kinds of characters and it was a wonderful experience.... more>> I'm not sure if the next similar one I find would give me the same satisfaction.

our leads don't talk much but their actions, just imagining them, is so hot. Tf. I wish I could read this for the first time again. I think their interactions works esp well bcs they don't speak much. It's through the little actions that you'll come to understand them. I cried a number of times as well and have thought about how I'd rather the MC give up on waiting but then I remember that he isn't like that. (And that's just another kind of novel HAHAHA. It wouldn't work as well here. It's a different kind of angst.)

I was worried when I was reaching the end bcs it seemed like I wouldn't get much happy moments but I'm actually satisfied. I feel like this esp works bcs of how the leads are. Like they don't rly show/say it and that's just how it is. I managed to see them happy and that's all that matters.

the ending:
Spoiler

I'm still not sure about the ending tho. The one about the dream. In one way, it could be XZ imagining the 7 years of separation. Tho I think it's highly unlikely cos it would be way too sad and doesn't seem like a response he would've given at 17.

the other is that after dreaming of this scene so many times, he finally got a happy ending and this dream was like a way to show that he got his happy ending and was trying to 'end' the dream on a good note. Like a final conclusion/closure. I like this way of thinking more. But then again my comprehension skill sucks lol.

[collapse]

Spoiler

I'm not sure if it's only me but there are a number of times where I cried, mostly because I felt so sad for XZ. Just reading his thoughts gets me crying but idk why, when their final separation came, LHY getting electrocuted and such, I didn't cry. It wasnt as sad as I expected it to be and just fell flat. That kinda is the only comment (not rly a complaint) I'll make for the story.

[collapse]

the side characters are fun too. Esp HW hahahaha. He grew on me. He's so funny and dumb/dense LOL. The side characters have their own characteristics and it's lovely. <<less

I think this is one of the most enjoyable atypical ABO works I have read so far. It has wholesome moments, angst, nice plot thats easy to follow along and best of all, a consenting couple.

The couple is very sweet, albeit the MC can have down moments or feel like-

Spoiler

he doesn't deserve to be with ML or that this is only a fleeting moment with the ML so he shouldn't be so attached (the inferiority tag rearing its head). ML stays supporting MC while also trying to open him up slowly

[collapse]

The MC can be very stubborn in his way of doing things but very, uh docile (?), obedient (slightly stubborn if his values are tested) if he's with ML. I believe he's only like that towards the ML and no one else. He ignores others if he isn't interested.

This is heavily slice of life type of novel in the earlier chapters. But it does get a little complex as the story goes on. Mainly with politics and family business. There are small jumps in time like a couple of weeks or a month. But nothing large so far.

Small warning but there is a side character that's a bit scummy towards someone. But it doesn't pertain to our main couple. I will summarize what happened down below. Its not explicit or anything but the tone is not good.

Spoiler

It was a moment where ML's father (Alpha) was using his pheromones on his Omega to subdue him although the Omega was unwilling. Yeah, basically the father is a s*umbag.

A great angsty slow burn novel! I love how the couple is in no way a conventional couple and you can tell they both love eachother very much. The communication between them is actually pretty bad but it's part of the plot. The plot itself involves a lot of drama and angst but is well done and the author ties up the loose ends. I would definitely recommend this novel and will be returning to this novel in the future.
