Reincarnated as a Little Fairy

When I woke up, I found myself reincarnated as a palm-sized fairy. By chance, I ended up following a princess I encountered, and despite the language barrier, I made myself at home in the royal palace.

As the protagonist adores medieval worlds, they live their life with high enthusiasm, enjoying a tourist-like existence in this medieval-like realm. However, the kingdom faces various problems…

Without understanding the language, the protagonist behaves as they please. Surprisingly, these seemingly absurd actions later become the key to solving problems, all of which get resolved without the protagonist’s knowledge. Everything gets misunderstood as if it were thanks to the protagonist’s efforts.

Light-hearted story about a fairy that just wanders about, doing whatever she wants & coincidentally helping save a kingdom on the brink of collapse.

Although she's reincarnated, she's definitely 100% a fairy - capricious, mischievous, whimsical & very magical. She reminds me of western fae legends but much less serious - her magic can perform miracles at the drop of a hat, but there's really no guarantee what she'll do with that power. On a whim, she might be very helpful to you, but you should never rely on her. She's... more>> an unpredictable & uncontrollable existence, especially because she doesn't understand what people are saying. Part of me wishes this was a cautionary tale about provoking fairies with human greed, but it's definitely not that serious. Some people have compared the misunderstandings to Eminence in the Shadows but I'd say MC is far less driven than that maniac. <<less

The story is fun... until it kind of isn't. I found the description to be intriguing, but then once you read for awhile you realize that the description is literally the entirety of the novel. There is a narrative loop formula that someone else mentioned, but I'll just reiterate it:

1. Fairy does something on a whim
2. this action unintentionally benefits a person or group of people.
3. Everyone misunderstands and thinks the Fairy is some kind of genius or benevolent being. (when in actuality she just acts like a tourist who does whatever she wants.)
4. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

I wouldn't mind this repeated loop if the main character would actually learn how to communicate to at least make a semblance of a bond with at least one other character and maybe gain at least a bit of development, but as of Ch. 65 the Fairy hasn't even once attempted to learn how to read or speak their language, and has never even been bothered or frustrated by her inability to do so.

In my opinion,

Good for lighthearted, mindless reading. Repetitive in format, this story seems to follow the formula of MC Does Something (Unknowingly/Out Of Curiosity) --> Thing Done is Miraculously Beneficial--> Everybody Gets Wowed--> MC doesn't understand and Goes Off to do something else--> Repeat, with slight variations along the way. This is the main punchline of the story so far.

The MC is made to be extremely obtuse and bland, unable to understand or observe the ramifications of their power, thus serving as the vessel for the misunderstandings to proceed.... more>> They do not seem to have any defining personality or character, showing intense curiosity when it is beneficial to the story, but not diverting any of that curiosity towards themself, their history, their power, the specific individuals around them until deemed necessary in the story.

For the fact that political intrigue and scheming is involved, with a kingdom on brink of collapse and a mysteriously powerful antagonist entity introduced, the story is impressively bland. As mentioned by another reviewer, the interspersed character POV is extremely common, usually repeating events the MC has already gone through but now with the flair of "Wow, what MC did is amazing and incomprehensible and impossible but it helps me and/or the people around me so it's okay and I don't have any other thoughts other than how valuable MC is!" While stories of this type can use this technique to develop characters and the world, it somehow seems the inverse in this case, which is pretty amusing.

The MC also does not seem to have any real strong opinions of their own-- they assist in the killing of bandits as they just arrive in that world, but do not have any thoughts other than: "Well, it's to be expected, they are bandits. Tee hee! Time to move on!"

Side characters have some attributes of their own but nothing that actually makes them stand out, not unexpectedly. Recurring POVs just touch on and revolve around the MC, so not much development there in terms of character. While interesting viewpoints and details are brought up, these are more than likely to be glossed over or never delved into deeply again, well. In terms of intelligence, so. There's definitely intelligence there and some thinking going around. Its definitely intelligence, yep. It exists.

Now, I understand this story was made to be consumed easily by everybody, fluffy and light hearted, where the MC is a blank slate for readers to easily insert themselves into, but just because something is SOL doesn't mean it has to be boring, dull and drab, you know. Popular, or even just good SOL at least have some significant level of character or world development, because that's who the story is so centered on-- the main characters and their close environment.

By neutering a story so much, you have effectively driven away purpose, in a sense. And I don't mind SOL, or stories with thousands of chapters. I like them. I have read chapters almost entirely spent around explaining the price demarcation of a fictional newspaper and the press environment around them. Why? Because I had a vested interest. Because there was creativity. Because there was a clear heart put into what was written. I'm not asking for perfect, or even decent, but sometimes you just read a story and factors just combine into this big stinking "no", even if there aren't exactly problematic elements in the story.

It is very subjective for this kind of thing though. What I can say for sure is that if you don't mind reading something vapid, not particularly memorable, and not even to feel anything, just to read it to use up time, go ahead. I may not enjoy this story, but I certainly hope someone out there will.

I don't hate it, because there isn't exactly something for me to hate anyway. It's just shallow. So shallow it's not even a plate, it's a straight metal sheet. And I guess that's my main gripe. Or I'm in a bad mood today.

Give it a try! Who knows, maybe you'll love it. About 5 ~ 10 chapters should be good enough, don't bother reading onwards if you don't like it, there isn't anything groundbreaking lying in wait there.

Anyways, good on the author for sticking through. Hundreds of chapters is some dedication, I can give them that. I hope it makes them happy, writing so much.

Translator (s) are just amazing, by the way. Imagine if this skill was used on a more... Well, on another story. Either way, thousand kudos to translator-sama, that release schedule and impeccable translation is actually miraculous. At the very least the English is good. Thanks for the hard work, you can do it.

Hope this review (?) has helped you, reader. <<less

TLDR: The MC makes a really great fairy, and a really terrible isekai protagonist. It's a good fairy story and really just doesn't belong in the isekai genre at all, it's clearly more like an old school fairy tale/bedtime story. Entering with the correct expectations of what you're getting into will greatly help you enjoy it. You're about to read Snow White, not Attack on Titan.
---

It's good, I've got no problems with it? The MC is perfectly fine, the things she's criticized for are all flawlessly in line with how a fairy is supposed to be. Fairies are: cute, really dumb, easily distracted, oblivious, and really like to play. Basically, childish. After all, her head is about the size of a walnut? There's really not a lot of room in there for brain matter, y'know? "Doesn't understand the consequences of her actions for the humans" is VERY in line with fairies. Half the myths about the evil kind of fae, they actually just really like to party and play and they're "evil" because they straight up don't understand that their idea of "playing" kills people.

I think the key thing to note is that this is quite literally a "fairy tale". Like. In the most literal possible sense, it's about a fairy. It's not a shounen manga where someone gets superpowers and then there's blood and gore and suffering and they fight god. It's an honest to goodness legitimate fairy tale, like the kinda thing you tell a small kid as a bedtime story. It is structured like "Oh no, the evil witch locked Cinderella up in a tower, but it's okay because a fairy came and magicked Cinderella a dress so she could go to the ball!" and NOT structured like Sword Art Online or whatever.

Tbh I think the isekai protagonist premise is completely unnecessary and creates misleading expectations for how the protagonist is going to act. The isekai element has truly zero contribution or influence, in every practical way she's not a normal person "reincarnated" as a fairy - she might as well just be a totally native, newborn regular fairy. She doesn't remember anything about earth, she doesn't remember anything from a previous life, her personality isn't even a little bit influenced by previously being a different person. She's just a fairy and acts like a fairy and does fairy things. At the very most, "from another world" means that her fairy play-time has a tourist theme.

I would describe the "isekai" mention as a vestigial trait? Like how humans have tailbones, which are utterly useless to us without a tail, but we still have them anyway because we're descended from monkeys with tails. This story has an isekai protagonist for literally no reason, it's utterly useless, but it's still got it since it's descended from actual isekai stories.

There's also the part where she decides that the princess wants to keep her as a pet, and decides to go along with it. This is easier to swallow if you understand that she's a fairy, she doesn't take pretty much anything seriously, *everything* is a game to fairies. At that part she isn't saying "Oh, okay I'm your s*ave" She's saying "Oh, we're playing puppies now! Okay~! Yay, woof!". She's completely capable of leaving and doing whatever she wants whenever she wants, and nobody could even try to stop her. She's a "pet" because that's the game they're playing, and she can and does just up and leave whenever she gets bored or distracted, much to the distress of the royal family. She especially likes this game because they give her frilly dresses and cookies...

The story is better if you just ignore the word reincarnation. It's a story about a confused newborn fairy that happens to wander into a random kingdom, where she meets a sad princess and she decides to play together because the princess's hair is pretty. And then good things happen because she's made of pixie dust and giggles, and "good things happen" is just what pixie dust does, y'know? Fairy tale, dude.

Actually a nice misunderstanding novel. It is quite similar to Eminence in Shadow in that MC is totally oblivious to what is happening around her and yet everything is going the best direction for MC. Although MC is just enjoying her supposedly pet life she is solving the kingdom's crises and everybody else thinking they are so smart makes up logical reasoning as to MC's totally random action into something of a prophetic calculations.

As for storytelling it is kinda repetitive as every other chapter it is repeated on another's POV... more>> but nevertheless important as you need to know what exactly MC's random action is seen on outsiders perspective.

Still didn't learn MC's name as of ch179 as MC only remember being human & from earth. Well she is the only fairy in the story so Fairy-sama is enough. <<less

After reading chapter volume 1 chapter 1-2, I had a foreboding sense of it going downhill fast and after skimming through a few chapters ahead & reading other comments, it was evidently true.

From the get go, the MC is a happy go lucky OP character. To be blunt, careless and oblivious, among other things. That is already a pretty huge red flag to me, especially since there is little to no signs of MC actually learning and doing better.

Continuing on that mindset, MC is perfectly fine to be a pet,... more>> actually begging for it really. Another red big red flag, despite how light the WN made it out to be.

The only silver lining I am getting here is that, fortunately, the people she went into servitude are generally relatively decent folks, treating her fairly well.

As sweet and straightforward as it is, it is as shallow and dark without having the need to look into it that much given how such elements are blatantly exposed at the surface. Can't really handle the mindset of MC and background implications or so, whether they be on purpose or not. Thus a pass for me. Started off interesting and well but soon fell off with how the WN is, unfortunate.

But that's Isekai, I suppose so, especially a JP one. Generally easy to read, as long as you can turn your brain off or so. <<less

I tried to like this novel but mindset of MC makes me want to vomit:

Spoiler

"If I plead with teary eyes, there's a fairy high chance I could become Silver-Haired-chan's pet. I'm a loyal pet of the royal family! Bark, bark! Without resisting, I allowed the approaching maid to place me inside the birdcage."

"Later, I was stripped of my clothes and measured. What's this? They're going to make clothes for me too? Truly befitting of a royal family, they even prepare clothes for their pets."

Umm a brainless read, very dull and repetitive and I honestly don’t think that the characters in this story are very likeable.

Spoiler

The fairy is alright, they conform to the idea of a very mischievous and whimsical magical creature with little to no understanding of human society. Although the self-positioning as a pet is ridiculous.

But aside from the Queen no one in the story seems to have a concept of gratitude, respect or basic morals. The Princess for one, albeit a child, is not the slightest bit grateful for the fairy not only saving her life but also her mother’s. All she cares about is the perceived ‘trouble’ the fairy causes and wanting to use the fairy as a tool

[collapse]

while there’s probably room for character development this story feels like a backstory to why a villainess is powerful before the heroine come along. <<less

Lighthearted and enjoyable, and quite fun with different POVs.

Chapters are very short, and there are so. Much. Filler. Although it's a super fun story, with the misunderstandings and super lighthearted feel, just the fact that so many chapters feel superfluous and boring, really brings down the novel.

Some great heartwarming chapters from POV's that are great, and many other chapters from boring places and characters. Could have been better imo.

Charming, silly and relaxing.

This kind of story is quite refreshing to read.

Go and read mustachemerlin review, as he properly explains what to expect from this story. The only problem I have with the story is the translation. Especially the pronouns. They change from one chapter to another. It really ticks me off as sometimes I don't even remember properly or outright confuses me if a character was female or male. That's why 4 stars.

It could have been a decent misunderstanding comedy but translation quality is at the level of machine translation with minimum editing. 3 stars are for story only! If you hate poor grammar, avoid this!

A bit disappointed (would be more disappointed, but I was already expecting something at the "simple slop" level, though this is below even that). The MC might as well just not be there.
