Qin Fang was one of the most handsome guys in C National University. His visuals were impeccable, but, the problem was, he was a great troublemaker, and knew how to fight.

Xing Yan was a stellar student in the Chemistry Institute, but his temperament was cold and introverted, and he communicated little with others. The first time he met Qin Fang, the two forcefully rammed their shoulders into each other. When their four eyes met, both knew that the other was not any good person.

Qin Fang jokingly flirted with Xing Yan, saying, “I’m Qin Fang, sophomore in Global Commerce. You can come find me any time, your Fang Ge will wait for you.”

Later, on a quiet evening, Xing Yan was smoking on the balcony. Qin Fang used his legs as a pillow, his expression containing a little embarrassed smile as he pointed to the evening sky and said, “Actually, Qin Fang was a name I changed myself, my original name was… Jian Xingxing*.”

From then on, I was not afraid of even the darkest nights, since I could just raise my head to see stars.

*T/n: The novel name, in chinese pinyin, is Jian Xing Xing (捡星星) while the mentioned original name of the character is Jian Xingxing (简星星). However, the “捡(jian)” in the title means to pick up, while this 简 (jian) is a surname. The same two characters that follow are xing (星), meaning star.

Translator here, giving the first review~

I finished the raws long before I even started translating.

When I came across the novel, I was hooked by the introduction. The pun was too nice. I appreciate puns, okay, especially on names. I'll be talking about the plot next, so spoilers...

It starts of slow with some very slow paced slice of life school banter the MC, Qin Fang, has with his friends, and sometime around there he gets into a fight with his later lover's good friend.

It's a pretty interesting development how the two go from a 不打不相识 (don't know each other before they have a fight) dynamic to slowly more serious friends. Along the way, the other gives the reader a glimpse to both of the family traumas these two characters have.

The angsty part where they kind of split was so angsty that I nearly, at one point, didn't want them to get back together because it seemed like such a mental burden for the both of them.

But, and thankfully, the author gave me a realistic work through that I thought fit them perfectly.

Not only are the main pair cool, the side cast is also intriguing. Xing Yan's group of friends are together because of their shared trauma. These side characters got my tears more than once, as well.

It's exactly as it's advertised: it's about the two mains and to a degree the rest of the cast finding their light and way in the world through their youth. I feel like the characters are alive since their emotion is raw and personal, and the slice of life part is realistic and heartwarming to a degree that makes one remember love and how working through it will always be the best option. I hope that in whatever parallel universe they are in, they are still picking up stars in their everyday life.

10/10 I love this novel, y'all fight me. (Hence why I'm translating it, wink wink)

Now, before I add more sappy things to this review, back to translating...

(I think I might add more as I translate more of the story and reread it for the nth time to get different feels) <<less

4.5 stars

5 stars for MC. Really liked his character, the summary made him out to be some hoodlum who picks fight but I felt that he had a really good and calm personality, better than most characters in this book or other books (unless the other character is the one who picked the fight first).

MC is also mature beyond his age be it in ... more>>

family matters, friends or even love. Especially the family side as he knows how sensitive his step-mother is to his presence in the family. But he has a soft spot for his younger half-brother. I thought the tags referred to MC but looking at it, it may refer to ML. But it's not as scary or abusive as I feared. Not to say it's okay either.

[collapse]

I liked the slow pacing in the book of friends to something more, the chemistry between the characters was really sweet and the side characters are there as well. One good thing (other than the older generation), are the supportive friends both MC and ML have.

Minus 0.5 stars for the ending part, it's a HEA but the conflict is slightly cliché. It added angst but it's a conflict I've seen in many other novels too. Also there were other melancholic parts.

But overall this is a good campus story of 2 individuals coming together. <<less

It’s not a bad read, but also not the best too. Nothing too dramatic. A very realistic relationship. The sweetness was good the angst was good. However I find it a bit boring, luckily it was a short novel, so I was able to just speed through it. I still prefer “ferocious dog of old” novel over all her other novels.
