Otherworld TRPG Game Master

I became a wizard of the Illusion Magic School and decided to create a virtual reality with illusion magic to play a tabletop role-playing game (TRPG).

It was great to create a virtual reality, but I was in trouble because there were no suitable players. During that time, I received an offer to be the professor from the Royal Academy.

The offer was to use illusion magic to fill the students’ lack of practical experience safely. And so, I became a professor at the academy.

“Send me back, send me back to that world right now-!”

“Outer god, someday an outer god will be our doom, we’ll all die!!”

“I am not the bastard of the Redburn Ducal Family. I am the foremost disciple of the Great Namgung Clan, Namgung Qinghui!”

But it seems there is a bit of a misunderstanding.

This isn’t a spell for dimensional travel, kids. It’s fiction…

Otherworld TRPG Game Master is one of the most creative and purely entertaining novels I've read in a long time. The premise of a reincarnated Korean man creating immersive virtual reality TRPG (tabletop RPG) campaigns using illusion magic is brilliantly executed.

The novel shines in how it takes this central concept and runs with it in wildly imaginative directions. Each TRPG "session" that the eccentric protagonist runs is like being transported into its own self-contained story world, filled with drama, humor, pathos and endless possibilities. The variety of scenarios he crafts... more>> keeps things constantly fresh and unpredictable.

What makes it even more engaging is how the lines between fantasy and reality become blurred, as the players get so immersed in the believable illusions that they struggle to separate truth from fiction. This leads to many hilarious misunderstandings and conflicts. The memorable cast of characters, both players and NPCs, further elevate the narrative.

Beneath the raucous fun, there are also intriguing hints of deeper mysteries surrounding the protagonist's abilities and the nature of this fantasy world. His unconventional motivations and inner monologues provide insightful commentary on storytelling and roleplaying itself.

With brilliant storytelling, bathed in irreverent humor and heartfelt character moments, Otherworld TRPG Game Master is a true gem. I'm utterly captivated seeing where this rollercoaster ride will go next. An easy and enthusiastic recommendation for anyone looking for an endlessly creative and entertainingread. <<less

This is a pretty enjoyable novel so far, though its very early. What impresses me the most about it is it generally seems planned, story arcs have satisfying conclusions, and the main protagonist isn't always required to have a central role within the story (on the contrary, due to the nature of the narrative, he often doesn't). The romance set up seems charming, and the characters are generally pretty fun.

First impression:

The series is pretty damn good gotta say. It is climbing the charts on Novelpia insanely fast, currently at the 6th lifepick and it's only been 40 chapters.

First things first the 'TRPG' in the title is a scam, the characters don't even roll dices this is straight up VR. Although it's DnD inspired, the novel is much more Truman Show than DnD so adjust your expectations.

Despite me only MTLing it, the writing is already impressive. It has a mix of misunderstanding comedy, a bit of ecchi, drama, tragedy, and... more>> some decent romance and harem for the side characters (though not so much for the protag, there's a heroine but it's kind of on the back burner, doubt the series will focus on MC's love life anw)

About our main, he's your typical KR oddball MC with a tragic past, died in a car crash and now he's in a fantasy world. The gist is, to live out his TRPG GM fantasy MC creates a VR tech powered by illusion magic that allow players to engage all 5 senses. Also just a heads up, our MC is a perv he has an unhealthy obsession with panties.

Each major arc plays out like a DnD session where the MC hosts as the GM, I've only read the first arc and decided to pause to binge later. First arc focuses on the romance of 2 side characters, a prince and an AI NPC girl.

First arc:

Spoiler

The first player in MC's virtual playground is a prince who is in a power struggle for the throne. He wants to test MC's skill, so he volunteers for the VR illusion magic experience. MC crafts the entire virtual world with a tailored boy-meets-girl scenario, cooks up an attractive AI NPC heroine customized specifically for the prince's tastes, her look, attitude, speech, backstory etc everything is designed to appeal to him. MC takes control of the AI and seduces him. The prince falls head over heels for the NPC.

Even though it is all illusion magic, the players think it's transportation magic. Like The Truman Show, everything's fake controlled by the MC but what the players see and experience feels real. The illusion magic runs on belief, the more the players buy into it the better their experience. The prince is so deep into it he believes his NPC lover is legit real, when the MC isn't in control the AI girl starts gaining sentience. So MC is practically a god with his creation power.

[collapse]

TL;DR This series is trope-filled, but author is a pro at describing things with his immersive writing style, making it easy to picture the scenes and really feel what the characters are going through. <<less

Hello! TLer here! This is actually my first review (ever), so bear with me.

This novel is taking Novelpia by storm, crushing every record in its path. And rightfully so! The writing in Korean is absolutely impeccable, an exquisite balance between eloquence, complexity, simplicity, and slang. Korean culture is imbued in every chapter, bringing every facet of the main character to life. He truly is one of us (except a bit sociopathic and degenerate) and it is so, so fun to read what shenanigans he is up to next. It is... more>> a tall task for me to faithfully incorporate every reference, slang, and humor that the author writes. Yet, I hope I have done his writing justice!

Now, to the summary:

We follow our MC reincarnated into an "Otherworld" where magic, knights, and dragons exist. The very definition of a cliche isekai. However, unable to forget the modern era, the MC, with his great talent in magic, decides his love for Tabletop Role-Playing Games (TRPG) is far too strong to give up. As such, he invests all his talents into "Illusion Magic" in an effort to create a Virtual Reality. Our MC continues his journey to bring his eternal muse (TRPG) to life, but far too many people mistaken his Virtual Reality as "Dimensional Magic" instead of the illusion that it is. As a result, he ends up as a Professor at the academy where (thankfully) test subje- I mean, players for his TRPG are in abundance. The students! It's right on time as well, since as a Game Master (GM), he needed players to carry out his intricate fantasies of Martial Arts and chunni-like concepts.

Now, onto my personal thoughts:

This novel is a 10/10 for me (obviously). The humor is so well done and the references are all so modern that us novel enjoyers are able to easily follow along for every step of the journey. The characters are fantastic and all too life-like. Each "thought" and "story" in the "sessions" enlighten their depths and make us realize that maybe, there is more to the story than just Ooo Ooo Ah Ah funny lol. There is a certain philosophy between the lines that makes the characters (and us) question who exactly we are and what our identity is. As such, the novel is incredibly deep, but packaged in such a light-hearted way, making it enjoyable to read.

Let's talk about our MC. He is a broken man, longing for home, and seemingly so insane and sociopathic that he should belong in a nut factory. But at the same time, he is incredibly relatable. Who hasn't been homesick? Who hasn't had fantasies and who hasn't done one or two (or 1340913) s*upid things before? I think that's his charm. You won't see some serious side of him (yet) where he blasts away Young Masters and the like. He is strictly looking after himself and his gains. Some may call that self-centered. I call that based :))

Romance is not blatant yet, but there are subtle hints. Let me present our main waifu, best waifu, cutest waifu: the Purple Magic Tower Master. She is not without her flaws, but the way her character was written is flawless. A perfect balance of serious and funny with a mysterious backstory to her. There is not much known about her yet, but she steals the spotlight whenever she appears. I'm sure you'll love her as much as I do!

What I love about this novel is that it is something fresh and new in the Korean webnovel scene. Nothing like it exists even though it's supposed to be a cliche isekai. There are no systems, no grand power system, no special powers, no abstract murim terms. Even the spell names are almost joke-like by perfectly describing what the spell does. Although there isn't some grand overarching goal like saving the world, I somehow get hooked on every chapter, not because of cliffhangers, but because of how fun the story itself is. It truly is the definition of "living in the moment" instead of striving towards some far away goal that will be achieved in 500 chapters. You'll love the story for the characters and content itself. Not because of some overarching theme.

All I can say is to try it out! You won't regret it (but you may be left wanting for more). I truly hope I have done the writing justice and translated it well enough for you to enjoy! Thanks for reading! Now, onto my last "ratings":

Plot: 4 Stars

Characters: 5 (Does a a 6 exist on NU? If not, it should just for this novel) Stars

World Building/Setting: 5 Stars

Writing/Storytelling: 5 Stars

Entertainment Value: 5 Stars (Once again, where is the 6?)

Overall: Dude. Just try it. <<less

Weirdly, I want to keep reading, But also.

Spoiler

I'm going to say what apparently nobody else is saying. This is dog shit.

If I wanted to read an estimation / summarization of a novel, I'd read a review. This "novel" is literally just one giant long summarization of disjointed events and the MC's one sided ass-shit-for-brains self indulgent morally-bankrupt summery of his time in another word, It's infinitely worse than reading an actual diary.

I've played around with AI recently, trying to get it to write novel chapters for fun. And even GPT 2 and Devinci are better writers and Summarize less than this writer does. And keep in mind, those were specifically capped / fine tuned to not be capable of writing full chapters by artificially forcing them to summarize their writings because otherwise they'd take ur jobs.

AND YET THEY ARE SOMEHOW BETTER WRITERS WHEN COMPARED TO THIS DOG-SHIT!

An amazing novel that makes you experience a bunch of different stories completely filled with nostalgia.

The MC is an unhinged shitposter, who is also damn good at creating a DnD campaign.

The side characters aren't monotone. They all have deep experiences that affected their life and their wants and fears. The developments of these characters, especially after they finish one of the MC's DnD campaigns, are all amazing.

The world-building originally seems like a generic fantasy one, however, something deeper is implied in the world and we are still earlier into the... more>> novel so the world-building hasn't been build-up significantly yet. However, that's only for the world the MC lives in. The DnD campaign's that the MC created are incredible. They use generic novel templates as the whiteboard, and painted a bunch of other random interesting things onto the canvas. The DnD sessions are short and fun, after a DnD campaign finished, the world will change to a different one. So you won't ever be bored of reading the same world-building again and again

The grammar and translation is immaculate, the memes are translated flawlessly without any confusion that results from language differences.

***

***
But who cares about all those generic ratings? That's not what's best about this novel.

This novel is pure fun. It is so fun reading all the shenanigans the MC added into his DnD sessions for the players to play in. But while the story is mostly lighthearted, the novel doesn't lack emotional and heavy moments. It is a wild ride watching all of the characters go through the DnD campaigns that the MC create and see how these sessions develop them as a person.

The DnD immersion is unmatched, 10/10. <<less

11/10 amazing.

I have been a DM many times in the past running various systems. The MC really touches me personally and I look forward to this.

Also, 17 chapters in, MC is still not at the academy as mentioned in the description, though the existence of the Academy has been mentioned. We just completed the first real TRPG session in the story and it was amazing. Now into the fallout from that and building to the next session.

Edit: Update as of Ch 37.

f*ck yeah Arc 2 just ended. Holy sh*t the feels and the emotions. Also the subtle build up of background stuff outside of the main TRPG drama!

Maybe not for those who dislike unreliable narrators as I am getting a distinct feel for that now for the MC. If you are reading this review and have unread chapters for this story get back to reading the story dumbass my words aren't worth it.

Oh MC is still not at the academy, but we have progress (maybe?). <<less

An amazing premise

Its extremely rare to find a novel with a good original premise, and even rarer to find one that does it well and I believe that this is one that does it both. While the plot might seem repetitive from a outside perspective of people being gaslit that the TRPG is real there is more to the story than the description offers, and ignoring the underlined mystery of the story the TRPG is fun overall I advise you to pick this up

It's a good story, but I have a relatively low tolerance for misunderstandings, and this is a story built upon it. Though compared to other misunderstanding stories this one so far puts thoughts behind it.

As of now I've decided to read ahead a little with using MT chapters. But so far from what I can tell it has a lot of potenial.

Essentially it follows a transmigrator from modern day Korea to the typical medieval age swords and magic world. Some interesting thought processes' here and there and he decides to use illusion magic as a way to create TRPGs and VR games (think SAO but better and safer).

To be honest, the TRPG element (as of now) isn't shown, it follows a more DnD sort... more>> of element in his games (i.e., a preset scene idea and the "player" has to go through with it, with him as the overarching game master).

Spoiler

For example; the 2nd prince comes to the magic tower to see what's up with this magic, only to get s**ked into his preset theme - he caused the ruin of the kingodm - despite it being reiterated it's an illusion, and acts as if what's happening has actually happened

[collapse]

It's established pretty early on that creating these TRPGs are his main desire so you can expect a lot of misunderstanding comedies and tropes to come of out it through his fervent pursuit of creating these different scenarios. The author knows how to insert some meta-humor into the chapters so if you're a fan of series like JJK, or just typical book tropes you can expect to see some humor around them.

Spoiler

RIP Go/Jo

[collapse]

What I think is really interesting is that there's no cliche power systems in place - aside from basic, archmage/sword masters exist - it's pretty simplistic and fun, it's just a guy wanting to make cool games and him using academy students or royalty as test subjec- players..... for his "dimensional magic"-esque Virtual Reality system

The author does a great job at really describing things with his writing style, it makes it easy to actually picture the scenes and how they run and draws up some really interesting implications with some of his plot points which causes you to be hooked to future chapters on either how the point continues or it's resolved

Spoiler

If a pre-programmed NPC in his game-like illusion world gains sentience, is it still an NPC and is it still an "illusion" for either player or NPC?

[collapse]

A word to note is that it's not immensely fast-paced, since the author takes his time in describing some of his scenarios and the VR world the "player" is in, you can expect it to be in a slightly similar format to SSS-Class su*cide Hunter (specifically around the scenes when he goes into different books to enact their scenarios).

TLDR: Bit of a nutty transmigrator hell-bent on making some of the coolest VR RPGs that illusion magic can allow, at the cost of some player's sanity :') <<less

No doubt the best novel these years. The story is superb from the character to the concept itself is written in such a terrific way. Simply awesome.

The story about a boy who reincarnated to different world learning how to create trpg. He go to purple tower which infamous for having a bunch of crazy magicians. The best part is the interaction between MC and tower master as they both are funny.

Highly recommend to read

This novel is as good as its ridiculous, which means its a really good. Main factor you will notice at start is comedy, comedy in this story is done perfectly, MC js hilarious and so are side characters, that does not mean story does not have series side, on the opposite. Deeper you read into the story more darker it gets but it still able to keep its comedy and drama balanced. Its like story that has smaller stories inside it and each side character can become protagonist for a... more>> while, story itself has depth and everything is like puzzle that will be completed by end of each arc. Due to its nature you can combine multiple genres inside one story without disturbing flow of story itself and making it "too much". Main character is basically batsh*t crazy god (not in literall sense but you will understand after reading it) he seems hinself as normal person while every single character in story thinks he is crazy. It creates this unique factor in story where povs of other characters shows us how much of madman main character really is. There are lot of important side character but most important one would be Purple Tower magic master who acts like insolation for MC, basically barrier for him to not stray from humanity and other things I won't mention because it would be spoiler. She is sweet and caring character who has awkward side to her but that only increases her charm, but she is not naive as it seems. She is ready to have work done behind the scenes and that is apparent at the start of story.I belive this story is definitely worth reading and I hope genesis will be quick with its translation. <<less

The quality of the novel is great. The stories are funny and the characters are well-fleshed out. However, the story often is in the perspective of the people inside the Main Character's illusion. Rather than exploring the story of the main character, it's often different stories that he's creating instead. I want to read more about the main character rather than everyone else's love lives and relationships inside these illusion worlds, and so this story isn't for me.

Starts out strong, has a decent setting with interesting characters, but it becomes really hit or miss since the story is really a series of "dnd sessions" with the real world plotline taking a backseat so far. The first "session" with the prince is the best and it kind of falls off from there, but it's not like the story can't be redeemed by another good one in the future.

imagine Tabletop role-playing game, MC make illusion world with his tower master female lead.

the male MC is the evil heartless Game master because not aware the world he created is real.

the Female Lead Towermaster is the good Game master because she know the world or tabletop role playing game is real.

the story genre change depent on what kind TTRPG at play & the story is all about the players who play the TTRPG that our MC & female lead set up for them. (Not focus to our MC and Female Lead, so main character always change).

very interesting, happy and tragic sad story who enter the " Real Tabletop role-playing game World.

It's a tale of a young protagonist's reincarnation into a parallel universe, where he embarks on a journey to master the art of creating tabletop role-playing games. In my eyes, lacks a decisive step to be truly great, but it fits the audience. A shame, as it is so well placed to play with very high-level concepts, just maybe, maybe It'll happen yet.

As it stands, this has exceedingly solid premise which is like a fresh well of untapped potential. Almost genre-defining. Lit-ttrpg, perhaps?

For the story so far, it's pretty good. Engaging, for sure, and the writing style is peculiar. Personally, I am displeased with some of the the latest choices, but I'm yet to see what the... more>> author makes of them. <<less
