Having been divorced twice, Su Mi encountered two rotten peach blossoms. One is her brother-in-law who had designs on her, and the other is a cruel and ruthless eunuch. After careful consideration, Su Mi chose the latter with trepidation. On their wedding night, the eunuch wiped the bloodstains from the prison off his hands and chuckled at Su Mi who is hiding in the corner, saying, “Come here.”

Su Mi: ╥﹏╥…

Proud and fake eunuch vs. charming businesswoman.”

Notes:

1. The male lead is a fake eunuch who does not live in the palace for a reason that will be revealed later.

2. The male lead dotes on the female lead but has a strong possessive desire.

3. The story is set in a fictional Ming dynasty and focuses on the development of the romantic relationship between the male and female leads.

[Scene] Person A: I heard that Eunuch has a beautiful appearance and a graceful figure. He is a rare handsome man.

Person B: What’s the use of that? He’s just a eunuch!

Su Mi: Qin Yan, someone else said you are a eunuch!

Qin Yan: Whether I am or not, don’t you understand it yet?

Su Mi: …

T/N: In Chinese, 厂花/“flower” is a term used to describe a man who is popular among women .It’s similar to the English expression “ladies’ man”.

I think this story was quite good so I don't know why the rating was so low. The plot was quite intriguing and the ending tied all the loose ends well. MC, although didn't have much role in those political struggles, she was actually quite smart and strong while ML was cunning and indifferent but he had a soft spot towards his families.

Spoiler

And what I'm most satisfied with is how almost everyone got what they wanted in the end and no more political struggle for them.

Okay book but I had a LOT of problems with it - mostly the setting, not the writing. Also needed about 1 more chapter of epilogue to really finish off the story. The setting bothered me, although I know it was historically accurate - the girls entering the palace as part of the beauty draft who were 14 years old, the age gap that was never actually defined between Su Mi and Qin Yan, the difference in treatment of the legal wife and the concubine and the conflicts this causes,... more>> Su Mi, her maid Chun Mei, her mother Yu Qingniang, and her friend Zhang Yue are all "good women" and every other female character is a terrible person - same goes for male characters, the only one who is not officially on the heroes' team from the beginning who gets to be a decent character is Prince Qi - and I was reasonably sure he was going to be the "hidden heroic character" from the single interaction Zhang Yue had with him at the hunt. Predictable plot, characters that might as well be caricatures, emphasis on the s*upidity and horrible treatment of women in ancient China, all would have downgraded this to a 3, but the good writing, excellent translation, and unexpectedly good twist at the end saved this one for me. The translator deserves an honorable mention - there were a lot of explanatory notes that really helped with understanding the story's placement in a specific time and place, cultural background for incidents etc, added a LOT to the richness of the story. I wouldn't read the author again, but I would DEFINITELY read what the translator had worked on, A++++ to them! <<less

Great translation, good start to the story that later meandered along to a disappointing rushed ending.

3 stars: Started off as a 5 star with a clever, strong-willed heroine determined to find a way to NOT marry her scum brother-in-law, and there are some funny misunderstandings and amusing tropes with the ML, but once she marries the ML, she devolves into the blandest, boringest, weakest-willed character in the story. There are several subplots and many side characters, all of which are vastly more interesting than Su Mi literally sitting at home... more>> languishing for her husband with whom she has no chemistry and barely any relationship because he's often away for weeks at a time and doesn't bother to talk to her or do anything with her except when he feels like it.

The ML fits the mold of the cold and aggressive/possessive type with a dash of smug arrogance that's fine initially but is less than charming as the story goes on, and he actually has other interests and important things other than his wife, such as his mysterious devotion to the emperor and his own court position and politics. I mean, those things are really more important than his wife, so again with the lack of chemistry and not-really-present romance. Token attempts are made to show that he does care i.e. Qin Yan telling her that he hates unimportant stuff but everything about her is important, or when he helps her out in the background using his power and position once in a while, but most of the time he leaves her behind while he deals with political intrigue and protecting the emperor and barely thinks about her.

Most of the time he spends with Su Mi after they're married, he's jealous and angry with her for s*upid misunderstandings, which being a genre staple and matching his archetype I normally don't have an issue with, but this ML went from annoying me to making me uncomfortable and disgusted when—

Spoiler

—in a fit of jealousy due to a dumb-but-typical misunderstanding, he brutally r*pes Su Mi, who was a virg*n and completely ignorant about s*x. Look, I ain't no stranger to dubcon and noncon, I can enjoy a piece of fiction as a piece of just that—fiction. But that scene in particular left me going WTF because it's mostly from his POV and he's extremely pissed at her and deliberately setting out to teach her a lesson, and she's clearly very frightened and unwilling and in pain, and the descriptions of the bruises and injuries he leaves somehow seemed worse than the typical love-bites and she's-such-a-delicate-flower-look-how-easily-her-wrists-bruise-from-being-held tropes.

Like, it was neither romantic nor erotic. And I was boggled when in the next part from her POV, she's all shy and coquettish and only a little bit sore because actually she did enjoy it and want it! Such whiplash after I thought I read about a man brutally r*ping his wife to the oh-but-I-actually-liked-it-and-want-more trope.

[collapse]

Before and after and during that event though, the two leads have almost zero chemistry. In the beginning he sees her as a mildly interesting diversion but literally doesn't care enough to even find out who she is except she keeps coincidentally popping up under his nose, so he becomes a little more interested—I appreciated that it wasn't insta-love, but maybe I actually prefer insta-love to the ML treating the heroine like an idle diversion to be tossed aside or shelved when more important matters arise, as his attitude barely changed throughout the novel. They had the most chemistry in the beginning when they didn't know each other but kept running into each other; once they got married, the chemistry flatlined.

Sure, again, lip service about how protective he is of her and how he surprises himself with how much he cares, but actions speak louder than words and he continued to treat her like a toy for when he had spare time or actually decided he wanted s*x I mean to be with her. 90% of the time, they were only together because he decides he wants to see her; the other 10% consists of the few times Su Mi goes to see him after days of him staying at work and essentially ignoring her, though it's sometimes framed as him being "considerate" of her for this or that reason.

The MC is basically scared of him for over half the novel. She doesn't want to lose her life or make him angry (and lose her life), but she also feels like everything she does makes him angry and he also gets angry for no reason so she doesn't understand him. When she does fall in love with him it's an underwhelming and extremely lackluster few sentences along the lines of, "Gosh, I think about him a lot, is this what possibly what love is? Maybe I do love him then. Okay, I guess I love him!"

It is frequently repeated even through the latter half of the novel that she has to tread carefully to avoid making him angry, and how she's still kind of scared of him. I do not find this romantic and man, I read a lot of danmei, yaoi, josei, and other romantic genres so I know how common it is to portray unhealthy relationships as romantic and I'm usually able to turn my brain off on the matter, but this time I just. Could. Not. It's not even that trope of "oh he's so badass and cool and scary so I'm scared of him that way, but also in love with him", it's more straight up "if I piss him off, he might abandon, divorce, or outright execute me.

As for Su Mi being a businesswoman, she's not. She does buy a shop and there's plot stuff that arises from it but it's 99% side character stuff and it has nothing to do with her business acumen (she doesn't have any) and in fact she manages nothing except for vague mentions once in a while of her looking at account books. She does almost nothing in this novel. She has little agency and seems perfectly okay with that—which is maybe actually a more realistic reflection of a typical woman of her status in ancient China, but doesn't make for a very entertaining read.

The ML being a "fake eunuch" is stated right in the summary and you'd think that would be a big part of the story. But it's not really a spoiler to say that it's not. It pretty much only exists as a plot point for funny misunderstandings for Su Mi, who is clueless about s*x and the male anatomy. Even the whole "reason that will be revealed later" bit from the summary is pretty much just a brief rather confusing summary of his past near the end and aside from a couple swiftly resolved attempts at tension, nothing comes of the fake eunuch plot point.

The subplots and side characters (and the ML himself) are all more interesting than the MC because they have more conflicts, mystery, characterization, and plot going on than Su Mi dealing with her scum family by telling them to leave her alone (and that's basically it, they come to her and she tells them to go away and they do, several times) and sitting around waiting for her husband to return. If I seem like I'm repeating that she sits around waiting for him a lot, that's because that's most of what she does in this novel.

But alas! Most of those subplots are hinted at and gradually built up and coming to a head, and then suddenly everything is messily rushed in the last 10 or so chapters. There are hints of subplots and mysterious character motivations that were never fleshed out, slow-burn relationship drama was abruptly briefly addressed and then shunted aside as "resolved", plot points were suddenly introduced for a hasty climax and zero denouement, Dramatic Reveals were summarized with little impact on the plot or characters because there wasn't enough time for them to matter, and the last chapter was a time skip to a weird rather nonsensical happy ending.

Spoiler

So you know the whole plot point of him being a fake eunuch with a powerful court position and vicious reputation? Yeah, well, apparently he can move to a different city with all his extreme wealth intact and keep his same name and nobody seems to recognize him or wonder about the fact that this eunuch's beloved wife gave birth to two children, or wonder about how he was able to conceal his non-eunuch status for years while serving as the emperor's right hand. The chapter is short and the time skip is 5 years so I guess it's possible Su Mi hid two pregnancies and they simply concocted a story about adoption or were cool with the public thinking someone else knocked her up, but nothing like that is ever mentioned and it's heavily implied that Qin Yan has been "freed" of his former position and having to pretend to be a eunuch.

Other loose ends/weirdly resolved things:

- What was up with her adopted brother Su Qi? There were frequent hints dropped throughout the story that he seemed strangely compassionate/considerate of her, he didn't seem like a bad guy at all, and there was the whole side plot of him literally being tied up and forced into marriage by the dad, but... nothing really came of any of that and it was barely addressed. So I guess despite all the setup, he really did turn out to be just an average good guy, with nothing deeper and no twists in his backstory besides the Shocking! Reveal! That his biological father is a different guy than everyone thought! That was also revealed very late in the story and very little came of it because its sole purpose was to face-slap the scum Su-family father!

- After like 90 chapters Su Mi finally meets up with her long-lost considered-dead twin brother, and much is made out of his refusal to abandon his grandma who adopted him, and the story seemed to be ramping up to him meeting his shocked-to-tears-of-joy biological mother only for the story to abruptly end. He shows up in the last chapter and it seems like he's still relatively cool/distant toward his biological family after 5 years, which maybe is actually more on the realistic side. But talk about a letdown. He also never developed beyond the cool, saintly, scholarly type, which was disappointing since I expected him to have more hidden emotions revealed and become less of a robot.

- Maybe it's because I was skimming more toward the end but I ended up unclear about Qin Yan and the emperor's backstory; I had to read user Leier's review in order to fully figure things out. All of that was tantalizingly hinted at throughout the story only for a sudden infodump to take place in the last several chapters where finding out made no difference to other characters—or me for that matter.

- Honestly, I was more invested in the emperor's awkward budding romance with his concubine than the "romance" of the CP, and because of all the rapid-fire plot points in the end, it suddenly rushed along and then got chopped off, basically concluding off screen by implication only.

- There are a bunch of other loose ends and unsatisfyingly resolved storylines but I'm getting annoyed recalling them so I'm going to stop here. Rest assured, there were quite a few.

[collapse]

The story started off promising and failed to live up to that promise. If the assorted subplots had been allowed to come to full fruition rather than being nipped what felt like 3/4 of the way through, I could have put aside Su Mi being reduced to all the strength and character of a limp piece of old lettuce, but as it is, oh well. It's not an awful read but it's not really a good one either. Between the ups and downs, I'd say it's passable at best. I much prefer a story that starts off poorly and gets better before ending well, than a story that starts off well and gets worse before ending poorly. <<less

It’s been a long time since a novel kept me on edge like this one. What started out as a simple plot turned into quite an intricate story. Till the very end I didn’t know what to anticipate; it was such a good read.

However I feel like some parts could have been fleshed out a little more and I didn’t get enough of the relationship between the main characters or the back story about the ML.
Still I totally recommend this novel

This is like back in those days kinda reading. Very pleasant, with everything as a movie / novel like plot. I don’t recommend if you have all the modern day views on things. This setting are very typical ancient romance.
The MC is not op, she is a typical boudoir girl. Grows up in a rich backyard. She is kinda intelligent or abit “ “wilful” in her own way trying to have a live that she feels that she can be happy. Lol but with ML she became a little innocent rabbit. ML well a typical powerful “eunuch “ with a secret. The way he kinda fall for MC is kinda well because of her looks and he feel she kinda fun to tease. Overall the whole novel plays out like a good script with all the romance, twists and turns, wife pampering and bits of political dramas. It’s actually quite like a movie which wrap up like a movie. I would love more extras and some more insight of other characters as well because author only just briefly touched what happens to them only few sentences. It’s been awhile since I read something so normal. Lol. But it’s a great read that I really recommend. Thank you

ev3ntually, the plot revealed Qin Yan the ML was not an eunuch and he was the emperor's brother. For these matters, not so much background stories why his younger brother not QY act as emperor, and why QY disguised himself as an eunuch. And why their mother - concubine Lie [if were not mistaken] got so mad and disgusted by his youngest son/ the emperor

[collapse]

Bit irritated by how soft and helplesss Su Mi -our MC the wife of QY. As one of the novel tag saying, she was clingy lover while the ML was the possesive one. So at some scene, QY so jealous and they settled it in the bed room

Nice & simple novel.

I'm glad the fl, despite her young age & unexperiences.. But she much better then those airhead-jumpingclown-FL in other novels.

Spoiler

The conclusion was simple.

The mistake begin with the previous generation where gredy old eunich ye push both his sons, the ML & emperor, onto the palace stage.. Resulting both brothers hardship.. But I'm glad they get good ending as Prince Qi, the newly asscending emperor let them go.

[collapse]

It's a straight foward plot with less face-slapping & twist.

Good story and translation. Might be triggering for some because of the attempted assault and general disgusting actions of her brother in law. It also mentions suicidal behavior and mental illness. It has a happy ending, but I was really starting to worry there for awhile and cried. Also I am a little mad it ended so quick, couldn’t the ending chapter have more details to resolve the storyline?!?! There is too much of a time gap.

The MC doesn't do much, and the writing isn't immersive, on that part, it's just 3 stars. However, the back story is interesting and more intriguing than many similar novels, even if the delivery fails to cast a shine on the intrigues.

The ending is a bit rushed and unclear that many readers might misunderstand things, including a reviewer here, maybe it was read through MTL.

Spoiler

Qin Yan's mother Concubine Lian was forcibly taken by the previous emperor while she was pregnant with the current emperor. Her husband Ye Qing followed her into the palace by becoming a eunuch and eventually managed to climb to the top as Chief of Eunuch. Young Qin Yan was disguised as his father's student / adopted son (as prominent eunuchs like to have adopted sons), and rose to a Chief himself later. Unfortunately this father son duo was too late, Concubine Lian never recovered from her trauma and she became quite crazy. Her newborn baby can't have another identity other than a prince, otherwise it will be killed. And that was how the father son duo Ye Qing and Qin Yan stayed in the Palace to protect the prince who later became the emperor. It was not easy to survive especially as they don't seem to have any political background. One reason this young emperor could survive is because the old emperor has only one other son Prince Qi who was younger than the fake prince, the other reason is this emperor looks to be weak and seem to will die young (it is implied that he takes medicine to make him looks ill) so the prime minister 'allows' him to live while waiting for his nephew Prince Qi to grow up.

It's alright for a mindless read to pass time.

Personally did not feel as though the MC had much of a role in the story as the plot progressed. It got more mundane and dragging in my opinion. I guess I was hoping for something more exciting. This novel is anything but exciting. Don't get me wrong it's not a bad novel just not for me.
Spoiler

A bit more about the MC, I had trouble liking her. The MC in the beginning gave a a glimpse of someone who was a juxtaposition she had courage to fight for what she wanted in a witty and realistic manner given that she did not have much skills or power, but as the story went on after she got married it just felt like she became more of a piece of paper without much character and was always worried about the ML and not doing much with her time. Perhaps the author made her become more like a person of her time, someone who's life revolved around their husband once they wed. That was the impression I got where she was constantly worried about the smallest issue and missing the ML all the time. Personally was not my cup of tea.

First, the translation is good and easy to read.

Second, don't expect a smart badass female lead. She comes from a strong family but she neither has any presence in the family nor any power. She is able to stand for herself in front of others and always gets the last word but due to such childhood, she doesn't have much faith in herself. Also she isn't a clever business woman, she is simply rich owner with loyal subordinates. Seriously, don't expect her to do something clever or brave, she does... more>> nothing in the overall scheme. She is probably the most realistic presentation of women of the time who simply manage home. There are parts of story that are a bit difficult to read cause the FL keeps talking about being afraid of the ML but there is nothing morally wrong that happens. The ML stops when the FL asks him to stop. FL reminded a lot of Bella from Twilight, lost in her own day dreams. She causes multiple people to misunderstand cause she is lost in her world or didn't explain clearly something. That's something I think the writer attributes to females cause the second female lead is the same.

I didn't understand the political side of the story too cause the conclusion was mixed.

Spoiler

The previous emperor turns out to be the younger brother of the eunuch. In the end both brothers take their wives to lead a quite life in one corner of the kingdom, so why were they fighting? Wasn't Prince Qi also one of their enemy? So the fight wasn't for the throne?

A story that is almost the poster child for misunderstandings in stories.

The MC is a young woman who has had her engagement broken twice (they call it divorced in this but she hasn't actually married either man) and has decided she does not want to marry. However, a scheming brother-in-law forces her to find a way to save herself which is to marry a eunuch. A bit naive, she gradually realizes that her husband is a bit more than what he seems. While she does grow a backbone as the... more>> story progresses, she still remains more of a normal woman.

Spoiler

Her brother-in-law had set his sights on marrying her as well as her sister from an early point in that relationship. To the point that he was spreading rumours about her to prevent her second engagement. He then convinces his wife (the MC's sister) to drug the MC and let him stay with her for some time so that they can claim her innocence was taken to force her to marry him. In reality, he gave his wife a different drug combination with the intention of raping the MC. The MC manages to escape into a nearby room which brings her to the ML's attention for the first time.

After all that, the scum-in-law still comes to the MC's family to propose marriage. Refusing it, the MC convinces her mother to let her try to become a Court Lady so that she doesn't have to marry this human piece of tr*sh. This is the second time she meets the ML and from there, she ends up married to the ML instead of a Court Lady.

[collapse]

The ML is basically the right hand man of the Emperor. He does everything in his power to protect the Emperor which puts him at odds with the brother of the Dowager Empress (who is not the mother of the Emperor but of another son of the former Emperor). When schemed against, he chooses to marry the MC as he finds her interesting. The ML is rather aggressive and cold but quickly falls for the MC.

Spoiler

He initially believes someone is trying to curry favour with him by sending the MC to him repeatedly but he has his men investigate her. That's when he chooses to marry her and becomes incredibly possessive of her. And it's when the misunderstandings really begin.

[collapse]

The story has the backdrop of court intrigue but it's mostly around the Emperor and the fact that the Prince's uncle wants to gain more power over everything. This includes wanting to put the Prince on the throne and have him as a puppet Emperor.

Spoiler

His attempts to put people next to the ML or the Emperor fail spectacularly but even that is dwarfed by the Prince's final decision to deal with this uncle. The Prince uses "another's knife" to deal with him as it goes.

Spoiler

After it's clear the Prince is going to become Emperor, the ML breaks into the uncle's home and brutally mu*ders the uncle and the uncle's sidekick.

[collapse]

The intimate moments between the ML and MC are a bit awkward as the MC really has no clue about that kind of thing. Plus there is the whole fact that the ML is a eunuch which leads to a lot of other issues. Outside that, there is the family drama of the MC's family which only has one good person (her mother) as her father only views her as a stepping stone to further wealth and the second concubine/side-wife is just... she's the real antagonist in this story in my opinion.

The father even went so far as to try and get her to adopt her half-sister's unborn child because the ML is a eunuch. Nevermind the fact that her father also married her "brother" off to someone without the brother's agreement.

The Concubine, on the other hand, orchestrated the mu*der of the MC's twin brother and then pretended that her own sister's brother was her child so that he could get adopted by the main wife to be the heir of the family.

Turns out the Twin survived and shows up later. He never fully reunites with the family though as his bio-father showed up and ruined it (by low key threatening the old woman who had raised the twin).

[collapse]

It's an interesting read but it's definitely not for everyone. Especially if you don't like aggressive and domineering MLs and wallflower MCs. <<less

It is not an overly exciting novel, but it is overall a good one. The relationship between FL and ML is good it has its misunderstandings, but nothing outrageous. I agree with various others' comments as it has a somewhat rushed ending, but it does not leave any missing leads. Good to pass the time.
