A former young man from Japan is reincarnated as Golan, an ogre in the Demon World.
Currently, war is erupting all over the Demon World, and it is much like the feudal era. Furthermore, the residents of the Demon World are all of the happy-go-lucky sort.
These people will take two steps forward if you take half a step back. Modesty is not a virtue in here.
Regardless of what you think, you have to be strong in order to protect your own rights. That’s the Demon World.
Before he died, his mother told him, ‘you should protect your friends, even if it means risking your own life.’ And while he tries to follow his family’s mantra, problems face him at every corner.
‘I’ll protect all of my family!’ Golan decides, but every day is the dark ages in the Demon World.

This is not a novel. This is a manga script.

Similar to Realist Demon King (even translated by the same people), it's like reading a manga without any pictures.

No descriptions or minimal ones. Battles are resolved in one or two sentences. Things are more like guidelines for the future artists to draw and fill the gaps of design and motion.

... more>> The dialogues and info dumps are properly done or even too long, because the artist can't fill that in for the Author.

What angers me is that the premise and plot are interesting which made me want to keep reading, but the writing is so freaking bad that I can't say I've enjoyed it.

The chaps are also short so the 100+ current ones doesn't translate into lots of content.

The MC has mastered all kinds of battle styles in a dojo while growing up as a human and is now the ultimate warrior against the simplistic and dumb regular demons. 'Everyone is a dumb fighter but the MC who uses regular martial arts against army battles'.

Lots of tell don't show because the Author is writing for the future Artist and not us.

Characters are uni-dimensional, acting like the rest of their race, aside from one or another who breaks the mold. All Ogres are dumb, all vampires are scary, all kobolds are crafters.

My advice is to skip this novel and read the manga when it comes out. If you came here from the manga, don't expect something deeper and more fleshed out than it.

Or read 'Reincarnated into a Werewolf, Demon Lord Servant' instead, which has a similar premise but far better writing and plot. <<less

A very slice-of-life like military novel, with a reasonable protagonist who isn't OP to the extent of most military novels. If Youjo Senki and Isekai Nonbiri Nouka had a baby, this would be it.

This series is heavily focused on action as story starts directly in middle of war times. Its an isekai but MC isn't OP like other regular isekai (so far).

Translation is good and chapters are released frequently. Loving the chapters so far.

Loving it! ? I just hope that the momentum is consistent. I just love how you get thrown in the middle of a war but the MC seems to be talking/updating the reader through his internal monologue with his “Dear Mom”.

With 11 chapters as of this writing, its a yes for me. 4 stars!

Great translation too!

I want to rank it around 4 or 4.5 butttt... read the rest below.

Frankly I usually don't put up review and just read,

But, I must say, this LN have interesting plots, sadly it's look like the potential haven't exploited fully *or most of it at least*.

Description of the event is short, some good things *like meetings, party, etc* was not explained in details or not put more interesting events to happen in the middle of it, they mostly "Talk". Talking bout strategy, "Oh, ogre that can think", and chatting... more>> *kinda for the characters counts*, the unique race and some characters kind of lack character development, MC just say "Their race is like this, their characteristic is like that" and that's it.

(Correct me if I am wrong, I read around 40-50 chapters of kind of Intermission to battle but still no big battle only short skirmish *that can be shortened if the author just put them in bit longer chapters*.... and that is bit disappointing for me)

This LN could be better to say the least.

But still this is just my own opinion. <<less

I really enjoyed reading this novel--to the point where I subscribed to the translator's Patreon in order to finish it. Essentially, the novel's story follows our protagonist, Golan, an ogre, as he rises through the ranks of the Demon World. It was a fun journey! However, I do agree with many of the other commenters that this story could've had more details, descriptions, maps, drawings, etc. Since the Demon World the author has made is so interesting with all its different races, the novel would benefit from extra content helping... more>> us understand and/or visualize the author created. In other words, I feel this series could make an awesome anime!

It was so fun to read about the world and Golan's funny antics, I wish we had more time to explore it all. My only complaint is that we didn't have enough time for a good denouement. I don't mind the ending of the story that we have, but I would've liked more details (as per usual in my case). It's a bit too open-ended in my case.

Spoiler

I'm glad the other Golan, ogre Golan was reborn as (human) Golan's son, but I wanted to know more about how that happened and why didn't they fuse back after ogre Golan died. Also, I felt a little let down about not knowing how much stronger Golan could've become as a Susanoo-no-mikoto. Could he eventually grow powerful enough to beat Melvis and Yamato with more time and training. What about Beka and her brother's new abilities? Did the military reforms push more of the ogres in Mevlis' territory to evolve? What will happen to the celestials and the human world? Etc. These questions left me wanting more from the story!

[collapse]

All in all, I recommend this novel either to people who enjoy a rowdy character who can resist brawling his way up the ranks and/or those who like world setting filled with fantastic races! <<less

I don't know why I like this one so much. But it's definitely 5 stars.

It just feels like a very light read every chapter, the plot is decent, the characters are fun. And the comedic moments between Golan and his subordinates made me chuckle.

The briefness in writing turns some people off but I think it's actually what gives this novel some charm.

The worldbuilding and the characteristics of different demon species is nice. Golan is an interesting character himself who doesn't feel insanely strong in the sense that he's OP. He's... more>> skilled and smart rather than powerful. It gives him a rather unique feel when you peer into his mind and see all the calculations he makes when trying to defeat a strong enemy. This is certainly not a novel that blow off your socks with balls to the wall action scenes. At most there's the ocassional face slapping trope but that's mostly played for jokes.

I'd call this novel an excellent palate cleanser to those other thousand chapter plus novels with insane word count and unnecessary padding.

Short but fun. Highly recommended. <<less

tbh, his family mantra is getting annoying

at this point, he's always ending up in a confrontation with his superior even though he knows that he will die

Spoiler

the reason of their of their confrontation is him wishing to accept some strangers that's problematic to have

here's my impression of that

psh, to me it's idiotic to be this idealistic or stubborn without any power backing it up

is he gonna be naruto, is he gonna talk no jutsu this

this is s*upid no matter how nice it looks

there's a difference in willing to risk your life to do something and sacrificing yourself to do something

then there's the death that makes difference and the death that doesn't do jack sh*t

all this debacle will amount to is pure BS, and he might likely be saved by some plot armor if they really fight tsk

after dying those guys will still have to go somewhere, it's worth nothing

sigh just sigh

[collapse]

and to me he's a bit of a hypocrite

Spoiler

the result of his another fight with his commander is that he's going into a disadvantageous fight even though it might create unnecessary sacrifice from his army cause he was angry that his enemy sacrificed others to win

so what's the difference of him from the other dude

in a sense, they're both willing to sacrifice their men to achieve what they want

it's pretty s*upid tbh

he's talking about the enemy that targeted those he said to protect, but the soldiers, one of those that was under the category of things he wants to protect, is gonna be involved in a disadvantageous fight

[collapse]

add that he's supposed to be cautious/cool headed that doesn't really want/like fights, though cause of that damn mantra, that cautiousness is gonna be gone

so don't be fooled

old

damn scratch the old comment

he's like that cause of certain things and to me, it's acceptable on why he's like that

I'm convinced

old

"I should have understood it better. I had experienced so much of it during my 17 years of life here."

------ really was surprised that he was still earthling like here, come on man, it's almost 2/3's of his life on earth and his principles still hasn't changed that much

would have accepted it if he had been in the demon world for small amount of time, yet 17 years, for 17 years he been in the demon world and the earth like principles still takes over

17 years, almost 2/3's of his past life and he's like that

this is getting disappointing

at first I was glad that even though he doesn't really like to act demon like, he's still doing it, but knowing about how long he had been there and him still unconsciously acting politely (even though it was implied that he was burned plentily in the past by acting like that) is disappointing tbh <<less

Makai Hongi is one of the newer generations of the isekai genre. We've finally reached the point in Japanese web novel culture where yes, the generic isekai story that's been done to death about some random JP protagonist getting transported to a medieval European world of swords and magic is getting stale.

It's kind of meta. The novel understands that the system of swords and magic is kind of weird, but also doesn't gamify it as much as you'd expect. Other examples off the top of my head are Kumo desu... more>> ga nani ka, and A Wild Last Boss Appeared. This novel doesn't try to do anything too crazy, but just different enough that it's interesting. Of course, lack of writing ability hinders this novel immensely. It's not nearly as messy or bad as A Wild Last Boss Appeared but clearly is less thought out than Kumo desu ga.

First off, it's about the demon world. In that sense, it's more like Lazy King. There are no humans mentioned in the novel, and it's more like they exist in another world. Our MC, Golan, similarly, since he is reincarnated in an ogre, isn't simply just a generic, polite, Japanese protagonist like the other isekai. The setting of the demonic world grows on Golan, and he tends to be... chaotic good of sorts? He's violent, gets into fights, and settles things with fists if he can. He doesn't like thinking but can create tactics if he tries.

And well? When in Rome, do as Romans do. The demonic world is the law of the jungle. Mana is the only currency that matters, and the more you have, the stronger you are, and thus the only thing that matters in this world is strength. Demon kings constantly wage wars with their peers to gain more power through contests of strength, and Golan's usually a participant in the conflicts.

This is where the novel gets more meta. There are a lot of mechanics related to the soul, reincarnation, and how to travel between the human world, the Celestial world, and the demon world. You kind of get info-dumped here and there regarding it, and the novel lays it thick in the final stretches. It's essential to the story, but at the same time, it clearly doesn't mesh well with the simple story.

It's just a bit refreshing though, reading a JP novel about the demonic world and fighting. The problem is that the fights aren't really detailed. When wars are fought, you still kind of just are in Golan's perspective, and all he's doing is fighting the enemy commander in a one-on-one. if there was more breadth, strategy, and focus on other characters in fights, this novel would easily become one of my favorites. As it stands, there's just a lack of detail. Golan's point of view is fine but sparse. Other characters in his army basically fight off-screen. You never see them fight, and that's a shame. There's no perspective on the enemy, and not really any tactics worth noting. Overall, wars are fought with brute force from beginning to end, despite there being tacticians and politicians in every country. Golan's got quite an army of different races, and even some named characters. Despite this, they barely get any screen time, and there's basically no focus on them at all. Painy the reaper, in particular, never even gets mentioned in the later stretches of the novel, which is a shame. Even Golan's archenemy kind of gets forgotten in favor of the soul mechanics aspect of the story. It's definitely jarring to switch from simple fights and character interactions in the demonic world to some guys talking in info-dumps about a bunch of stuff about the history of the world, their motivations, etc.

This novel's a solid showing but lacks the writing ability and execution to truly be great. Still, a solid 7/10. If you like something slightly different from a typical isekai formula, I'd read it. <<less

Best thing about the novel is the MC golan- he's so freaking funny, and the way he interacts with the world around him really made me lol sometimes. He has a solid character arc, wherein he becomes more and more like an actual demon instead of the human he once was, and the author bravely follows that through to it's logical conclusion. Some might say the ending is a bit abrupt, but even though it is, I think it makes very good sense.

On the other hand, really didn't like how... more>> the author did the writing style. I was with it at first, because I thought it was characterisation for the simplistic and straight forward ogre, but when it switched povs and they all spoke that way????? Oh no. Still I got used to it, but I ended up skimming through some chapters BC of it. <<less

Genre is seinen, but MC and story development is shounen. Not as much plot armour as Naruto/Bleach, but still noticeable.

Storytelling style feels dry, and mostly takes the PoV of the MC. Pretty good world building, but MC's character doesn't really change from start to end. Translation is quite good.
