Sixty Years ago, one middle aged man brought a Qilin that looked like a pug and a mandarin duck that looked exactly like a duck, walking into the Imperial City of the Central Plains for the first time.

That year, this middle aged man crossed the Mountains and Seas Ridge, passed through the Four Seasons Plain and walked into Qingluan Academy.

Sixty Years later, Lin Xi sat on an old carriage, starting from Deerwood Village, he passed half the Yun Qin Empire and went straight north, going to Qingluan Academy…

This is a story involving the honor of an Empire, of loyalty and betrayal, involving youth and hot blood, involving a young man with a different perspective of the world, and a strong cultivating academy.

It's a great novel but I dropped it near the end. Everything was going just fine until it became clear the author had a boring approach towards the end. I didn't even read any reviews or spoilers. I just saw what the author was planning for the new (final?) villain and I stopped reading. It looked rushed with abrupt twists that screamed last minute decisions. I had too many complaints with the trajectory and I didn't want to force it and hope the author came through. It's otherwise a great... more>> piece of writing with plenty of novel concepts and well-fleshed out ideas. Superb translation too.

As with any novel, there are plenty of other individual aspects that certain readers won't like, but at the end of the day that's a matter of preference. For instance, I thought the MC's "friendship" with the prince was conjured by the author without actually writing anything to build that friendship. Just 'poof' and there, you're best buds. Left me confused. <<less

A good novel that reminds me of Joy of Life. I feel that the current rating of the novel (4.2/5) is very fair. Anyway, I'll list down things I like and don't like:

The positives:

  • Character development. MC started off with a tourist/bystander mindset but as he lives and interacts with people, he slowly sees himself as a part of the world.
  • Details and consistency. No glaring plot holes, no unfinished business by the end of the novel.
  • Most of the arcs are interesting and well-written
  • Some chapters are capable of touching the soft spots
  • Translator was amazing. Without him and his annotations, the reading experience would have been meh.
The nays:

  1. Backstory and history of the world was vague/ not explained in details.
  2. Too many names/events to remember. It's something like reading Book 10 but suddenly, author decides to mention a side character/event from Book 3.
  3. Spoiler

Final arc was forced and draggy, imo

One of the best slow paced novels I've ever read, it was worth the effort.
For those who have previously read Nightfall, Joy of Life or Way of Choices, they would find this novel similar as it's focus is not on overwhelming martial arts and explosive techniques but on the entire atmosphere made up of various characters, their attitude towards life and unique way of thinking. A world of cultivators mingled with common people, empire officials and army generals, all of this is tied up in a reasonable way creating a world which awaits to be discovered by the main character.
Here, cultivators are indeed above ordinary people, but unlike other novels when a higher level cultivator is unrestrained, an army made of common people may kill even the most powerful man.
Give this story a try, it won't disappoint!

I stopped reading at chapter 560. This means this story is roughly three stars to that point. It wasn't very good nor was it very bad. The story needs to be readable to make it that far. Yet because of one character I completely dropped and even put effort into putting up a review of the novel.

The king, holy shit. Even worthless character that one can basically use one hand to count number of times they were mentioned, and just mentioned. If put into actually context of the story, she had maybe one significance to the story before she was axed. That character was mentioned so little but was a better character than a face slapper that was MAJOR part of the story. Even in ancient times assassination was common, back then the thought of kings being children of heaven was also there. Yet somehow this worthless oxygen sucking bottom feeder that could be killed in public and wouldn't even cause outrage to the public that see him as a god or the heavens itself. Yet not only is he able to survive he constantly throwing a temper tantrum because life is hard, a character equivalent to a child rolling on the ground screaming and crying in a store is a MAIN CHARACTER IN THE STORY.

Pros:

The writing is much better than other Chinese novels

Heroes and villains seems to make rational decisions

Cons:

It is sooo incredibly slow.

Every other chapter is a POV switch which doesn't actually deal with the main plot line.

The story is good, it's much better than your average cultivation novel out there. The worldbuilding, character portrayal and the stance the MC takes is refreshing. The author als shows multiple views and thoughts on certain issues making the reader think.

However it still suffers from characters that have holes in their brains, and the author is trying way too hard with his harry potter and other "westaboo" references. Sometimes I also wonder why certain things happen they way they are written because it just doesn't make sense.

V3 Review:

I'd say this is a good novel! It certainly has its flaws, but it's worth reading unless one of the flaws happens to be your pet peeve or something.

Flaws:

... more>> The author (up to the point where I've read, I heard that they get better) refers to people weirdly. Calls them "teacher with one eye" instead of just saying their name sometimes. It's alright sometimes, but it can get confusing.

Harry Potter references. In the first 20 chapters, there a few, and I've seen people complain about them being too jarring. I personally have no issue because it's only 5 sentences in 20 chapters (long chapters, mind you), and I haven't seen any after around chapter 20 yet, so I'm assuming they get more spread out. There are some other quick references because the MC is a transmigrator, but I feel that just makes him more relatable. I mean, I'd probably being thinking about how the new world compares to the old. It's not just HP references btw; there are CN actors and stuff too, but less.

The author's fight scene writing skills are kinda eh? It can get kinda confusing or vague. Maybe they'll improve though.

Some of the side characters are kinda forgettable? Like, there are 2 friends of the MC that don't have much importance and I can't remember their unique characteristics. I'd like to mention that there are side characters who really are memorable though. Honestly, I'll remember the forgettable ones once they actually do something. :V

Pros:

Many intricate details that are awesome! Interesting plot! Nice reveals! Not too much face-slapping! The pacing is pretty decent too. The MC's ability is interesting and not broken. Side character development is interesting.

I felt invested in the side characters, and the MC's personality isn't like a typical CN MC. He's more chill. I also like how the author actually makes use of his transmigration and transmigration in general. Some authors just add it but never really place any importance on it.

The feeling of this novel is more abstract, so don't read it if you want something direct and easy. It's not hard to understand, but at times there are more plotty moments where you might have to think, and it can be confusing to read at times because of the flaws I mentioned earlier. Overall though, I would consider this novel well-written, even though it is still flawed. It feels a bit like Ze Tian Ji or Nightfall at times, but more simple.

The novel is quite refreshing to read. It has CN tropes, but they're done differently and a new way that's quite interesting. I'd say read until he goes to the school to decide if you want to continue because it really kicks up around then (I won't go into detail because spoilers).

The worldbuilding of this novel is great! I haven't seen anything like it. I really like how there are special titles/classes.

Things are going a bit too smoothly for the MC right now, but that could change at any moment. Will update my review after I catchup to the current translation!

Volume 10 Review

Wow, I was a bit iffy about this novel at first (HP references, excuse me?), but I really love it! I said things got better after the school part, but dayum, it got even better! The hype is real! The characters are the best in the novel. They feel real and human (even the worst characters). The small interactions between the MC and people are so wholesome. Even some enemies are worth admiring more than "allies." The politics aren't that complicated, but they're super interesting.

The novel has a bit of everything! A mu*der mystery, politics, economics in some arcs. Of course, don't forget the wars/major battles! The actions scenes can still be a little confusing, but they're much better now. The fighting system is also super fun, and the MC isn't weak or super OP.

Important characters are characterized well, but I also think what makes this novel EPIC is how the author connects small details and plot points well. Something/one from Book 1 is relevant in Book 5, etc. Also, the MC isn't perfect, and has suffered losses, so no Gary Stu here. He is pretty awesome though, if I had to pick a MC to follow I'd definitely consider him. His cheat is actually balanced well. It's strong and makes a great impact, but it's usefulness depends on the MC's ability to use it properly. The author also writes it well, making readers feel tense (almost forgetting about the cheat) until he uses it. Even after he uses it, it's still exciting to read. The cheat actually builds hype.

This is the novel I've been looking for for so long. A quality xianxia that isn't cliched or idiotic. The author's greatest weakness is that they're doing too much, meaning it can be confusing, but their greatest strength is also how detailed the plot is (plus characters with humanity). I'd strongly recommend this to anyone, especially people who like xianxia or Mao Ni's novels. This is definitely one of WuxiaWorld's better novels. I'd say it's underrated. <<less

It is not necessarily easy to read. Things are not always spelt out. The world is complicated. The plot is complicated. At times, it needs an editor's touch to make the sentences less complicated.

But, this is one of the most well executed web novels ever.

The humanism of Field of Gold and A World worth Protecting; The philosophical detail of The Path to Heaven; The Political detailing of Silver Overlord, Gate of God or Divine Throne of Primordial Blood.

This novel is overrated. I'm guessing it got many 5 stars because the reviewers gave it 5 stars after only reading the first few books (a couple of hundred chapters) which actually

fully deserved. Book 1 to 6 I would give a perfect score. Book 7 to 15 are 1 star at best.

Starting from book 8, the novel turned into war/political novel. The MC did nothing but going into battles and missions (which I find boring since war novels aren't my cup of tea), while the emperor and powerful old farts scheming and plotting in the back for political power.

The MC always claims that he's just a visitor in this world and basically aside from his family, he has no sense of attachment and belonging, Yet what does he do? He enters a military academy became an official and soldier, and repeatedly endanger his life doing missions for the empire/emperor. The same emperor he doesn't respect and wants him dead. The same emperor that repeatedly plot to hinder his progress and giving him so much trouble.

The MC is fighting for the empire in which half of the officials seem to want him dead. Yet when the the empire sends him to kill some "barbarians" he just go and kill them. These barbarians aren't a threat. The emperor wants them dead because he wanted the territory and resources the barbarians have. So yeah the MC kill indigenous "backward" people for the glory of emperor and empire who wanted him dead and give him nothing but trouble.

The MC rakes war achievements and create miracle after miracle, but instead of being rewarded, the emperor ignored his achievements and instead tried to suppress him. What he got instead is the admiration of the people (Sir Lin this, Sir Lin that) which purpose is nothing but emotional bait for the readers to eat. He is so selfless that he bankrupted his company that his subordinates and business partners worked so hard to build, to feed the people, why? I don't know. It would make sense if the author previously establish that there are famine and people are starving, but there were none. There were few lines about food shortage due to war but that's it, it wasn't so bad to the point that the people starting to rob or kill each other for food. Of course he lost his fortune and gain people's admiration. Another emotional bait (CRY DEAR READER! CRY GODDAMIT! SIR LIN IS THE BEST!)

f*cking hate that.

The MC has a severe hero complex where he thinks it's his mission to save the world.

99% of the people from the legendary academy is useless. It is said that the academy can topple the dynasty if they want to (which is the whole reason why the emperor hates the academy so much), and that the legendary vice headmaster can kill the emperor as long as he's wiling to sacrifice his life.

But they didn't because they want to maintain stability and their mission is to protect the people. So now the emperor:

  1. Starting a war which killed hundreds of thousands people
  2. Purging the empire and killed numerous honest and upright officials along with his political enemies
  3. angered the people
  4. Creating instability in the empire
  5. Targeting the academy, inciting unrest within, even later sending the army to siege the academy
  6. Clearly becoming the number one threat to the empire

So what did the academy do? Instead of removing the emperor from his throne and install a good, benevolent new emperor, they send their student to help the emperor in his conquest to attack the neighboring empire. While the legendary Vice principal, died due to old age or something, while doing absolutely nothing, when he could have sacrificed his life to kill the emperor. Remember, it's been established that the academy doesn't revere the empire/ empire since they predate the empire, so what's stopping them?

I could rant all day due to the many plot holes, inconsistencies, and decisions that the characters make that make absolutely no sense, but it's simply too many.

I don't know, perhaps there are explanations for all that, which I missed, but right now, I don't care anymore

5 stars for book 1-6

-1 star for the rest

The hallmark of a good novel is that it leaves you feeling empty inside after finishing it, and generates thoughts beyond the plot. Immortal Devil Transformation is one such book.

I was initially attracted to this book due to promises of its literary style and vague, but not annoying foreshadowing (I hate when novels randomly allude to how things will be years later, acting as spoilers. Good foreshadowing is when it's not obvious when you're reading through it the first time, but it makes sense in hindsight) The book did not... more>> disappoint there.

Some parts feel slower or cliche, but if you power through them, you won't regret it in the end.

The premise of transmigration and a special golden finger are tried and true for webnovels, but the value of this book goes beyond the usual face slapping - the bad guys get their just deserts and all, but it doesn't feel repetitive or pointless.

After reading this book I have some thoughts about the deeper meaning the author is trying to express:

Spoiler

Sometimes simplicity is bliss. The contrast between the fast-paced, high-flying life of modern civilization is contrasted with the simple, dumb but ultimately pure sentiments of the characters in this new world. However, just like how a pure utopia cannot exist because the wants and wills of people will forever diverge, it is important that one searches for their own meaning in life. The ultimate pursuit of living is ironically to die feeling at peace with oneself and the direction they have chosen for themselves. As one's mortal achievements are just passing smoke in the lens of history, we should instead focus on positive contributions to society and humanity, which will live much longer than any individual's lifespan. The world is fundamentally what you make of it, but an internal mirror should guide your actions to be upright and just.

Very good concept not repetitive plot. Author decided to finish it when it was good before it becomes boring world count filler, which I appreciate it.

Is a good read, slow paced I certainly like it but there is a nitpick that I cant let go, this is why is not a 5 stars for me:

Everything revolves around MC!

In some senses is not a bad thing, but when the universes is acting against MC, even for ridiculous reason, even if MC does nothing, the plot goes to him. It also feels... more>> inorganic, heavily forced to just create plot.

  • Many Enemies
  • Many faction
  • Many Countries
  • Many X thing
Everyone of these wait in line to assault the MC, and the MC cant just sit quietly waiting for all of them to fight themselves. This is some unrealistic bullshit.

Imagine on Dragon Ball, you had Piccolo, Babidy, majin bu, Androids, Cell, Garlic jr, The saiyans, Freezer, but coincidentally they don't fight each other. They systematically fight the MC in order

But unlike Dragon Ball that these enemies appeared one after the another, in this Novel they exist together at the same time everywhere, and are hostile each other, but they somehow notice MC then send to kill him because some space magic, or the MC go fight them to protect the kingdom that wants to kill him yada yada.

Well, anyways, a good read, and my only complain is this, the MC should have let the world solve itself a little. <<less

4.2-4.3 stars. Minor spoilers.

This novel was great but I have mixed feeling about the last arc. Would have been 4.5 stars if not for the last arc. One review mentions that the novel was like a xanxia version of Harry Potter and I agreed that there were some Harry Potter vibes. I really enjoyed the novel. It has plots, political intriguing (though I felt the behavior of the emperor especially annoying and I felt is one of the drawbacks as the author could have make him into a much more... more>> intellectual villain as opposed to a crybaby and spoiled kid who think himself as the son of heaven who can do anything with no bottom line)...
There were certain themes throughout the novel such as brotherhood, youth hotbloodedness, loyalty, bravery, and sacrifice that I really liked. The novel is really long as there are 16 books and over 860 chapters so my memory of it is a little bit vague now. It was a good ending, not the best but good. The last arc explained why the title is that way. Up to book 15, I have been wondering why is the title “Immortal Devil Transformation” when there was nothing remotely about immortal transformation while there was only a “downgraded” version of devil transformation. Honestly, I don’t like how the author made Zhangping turned out as the last level boss/villain. There was too much plot armor to make him into this powerful last boss which is not to my liking. But I was satisfied somewhat with the resolution. Anyway, overall a good story with complexed plot. <<less

War, more war, and then some more war. Overall, it was an interesting read filled with exciting discovers and adventures. The cultivation system also felt more down to earth than the norm and not to OP. The characters were pretty detailed and felt alive, not a lot of 2d side characters at all in fact nearly everyone played a role which would be the benefit of a short ln such as this one. Also the romance was done very well and it would be hard to not like the female... more>> character's in the story. They follow him on his adventures and fight with him unlike with most cultivation novels where the ML gets a woman and then stores them away lmao.

One thing I thought they could've done better would be there was potential for more such as a bigger world, there wasn't to much world development after a certain point and the story was also nearly 40% just war which I felt was a bit extensive and could've been lessened down a bit.

Other than that it was a good read and I would recommend. <<less

This novel is somewhat different from the other cultivation novels. While here people still seek power, it is still limited, they cannot surpass the world. Its meaning is simply that we are in the end human.

Probably my favourite webnovel.

The cultivation levels, while distinct, don't get completely ridiculous like in most novels. This means that while powerful cultivators are very useful in a war, they aren't so completely OP that the rest of all the soldiers don't matter. Also the MC doesn't magically heal or stop being exhausted because a new enemy arrives. So actual battle plans need to taken into consideration.

In most Xianxia novels, wars are just a silly waste, because the entire battle just depends on the big guns.

The author had the good sense... more>> to wrap up the story before it started becoming repetitive. (Although I would have liked it to be longer, but I guess that's normal when the story gets wrapped up in time.)

The worst thing about the story is the title, as it is completely misleading. It is a much more intricate tale than some silly cultivator story about devil transformations. <<less

This is incredibly boring.

I'd wanted to drop this from chapter 12 onwards but I pushed myself to keep reading, thinking it might be like Warlock of the Magus World with a slow start as he goes to the academy, but then it picks up and becomes similar to Way of the Devil - in which the MC continually learns new techniques (more than a human should know) and transforms himself into a monster/devil then goes about killing people or something.

I lost patience in the end and googled it, somewhere around... more>> chapter 845 the MC learns the 'true devil transformation' which means that at some point he learns a fake devil transformation- I'm going to assume the MC doesn't get his devil transformation until at least chapter 300, given the absolute snail's pace the story has going on (it's literally a slice of life, about a teenager going to a school; feels like a budget harry potter novel clone but far less interesting) and that the author would probably plan the MC to have the fake transformation for quite some time.

I'm not going to subject myself to 100 chapters, let alone 300 (or more) to get to the interesting part of a story. I shouldn't have to suffer to enjoy part of a story; it should be good all the way through, like Warlock of the Magus World or Way of the Devil, where something is constantly happening and the story and characters keep changing to keep it feeling fresh; I HATE these types of novels where the MC just bunkers down in one spot for hundreds of chapters. When I googled to find out when he becomes a devil, the chapter for the true devil transformation was around 845 and he was STILL AT THE ACADEMY. STILL. 845ISH CHAPTERS, STILL IN THE SAME PLACE AS CHAPTER 35. I'M NOT KIDDING.

My other complaint is that the cultivation in this world is /incredibly weak./ You can literally get killed by a normal guy in heavy armour or an archer's arrow after decades of cultivation. At that point is it really worth even bothering? <<less

What I most enjoyed were the character interaction and how complex their personalities were made to be. Where I dropped my rating a little would have to be the last book. Quite an epic novel. One of the more fleshed out light novels I've read so far, with extensive world building. I really enjoyed the portions where the POV would change to other side characters and see how they viewed the world from their eyes. Overall, I liked the MC. He was sincere and a good person, and didn't do anything really foolish, though sometimes I think he could have been less soft-hearted. The last arc just was very unsatisfying. Why make the biggest villain in the book have reasoning like... more>> that? The fact that Principal Zhang never actually showed up was also quite disappointing. I was looking forward to them meeting. Overall, a gripping story. <<less
