Please use proper spacing and paragraphs. The daughter of a viscount, Eleanor Townsend lost her parents at a young age andhad been receiving sponsorship from the Duke of Griffith. This sponsorship led to rumors that Eleanor must be the Duke’s illegitimate daughter.
Suddenly, the Duke declares that his heir, Daryl, must maintain a one-year marriage with Eleanor, or he won’t inherit the title. Daryl approaches Eleanor and proposes a contractual marriage for just one year.
“If you want to repay my father’s favor, you’ll have to accept my offer. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have to go through this absurdity.”
He was a cold and arrogant man.
Throughout their contract marriage, Daryl’s tongue had been like a poisoned blade, cutting through Eleanor.
“Don’t delude yourself into thinking you’re a real duchess. Live as if you were dead for a year. Don’t speak to me.”
She endured it, waiting only for the day when this marriage would end.
However, why is it that the one who never took her side, not even once, is now trying to hold onto her?
**.
“You’re the one who said it only needed to be a formality; you’re the one who asked me to marry you in the first place; you’re the one who brought me a contract stipulating a divorce after a year; you’re the one who coerced me into paying the favor the former duke had given me.”
“……Eleanor, back then, I was.”
“You told me not to delude myself into thinking I became a real duchess, and live like dead for a year. You practically treated me like I didn’t exist the entire time.”
“……”
“It was a lonely life, many, many times more lonely than the one I lived alone in Townsend Street, but I put up with it, because it was a promise, because I thought it was my way of making amends for the trouble I’d unwittingly caused you, and so I put up with it, because it was only a year, and I can’t put up with it any longer, and I don’t want to.”
The calm way she spoke to Daryl contained all the truth Eleanor had kept bottled up inside for a year.
“Now please leave.”
“……”
“If you don’t leave, I will.”

If, however, you suffer from high blood pressure and lack of patience, avoid it like the plague, because with every damned chapter you will have an immense desire to smash something nervously. To quickly summarize: the protagonist, Eleanor, is forced to marry the ML due to a debt of honor that she has contracted with his father, Duke Theodore, her protector since her father died in an accident in carriage leaving his mother alone and pregnant
(although I have the terrible suspicion that the father's death was at least indirectly due to the duke himself, which would explain why the man who otherwise would have no motive, interest or connection so insistently wants to help the widow and the orphan, to the point of making anyone suspect that Eleanor is actually her bastard daughter)
Basically the only thing that keeps her going is the notion that a year after the wedding, she will never see all those people again, not even in their portraits, for the rest of her life. Only this gives her the strength to face everything.
But since she is a decent human being, she at least tries to be cordial and to have a relationship, if not exactly friendly, at least at the limits of the respect that should be had in a civilized society. SORRY THAT THE ML IS A LOOSE SH*T, ONE OF THOSE THAT IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY STEP ON IT THEN YOU HAVE TO THROW ALL YOUR SHOES AWAY BECAUSE IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO REMOVE... Think of something horrendous and despicable that a ML could do in this story - excluding physical aggression, because thank god at least they spared us that... for now - to make himself hateable: well, he did it. Or he's about to do it.
- Offend her in every possible and imaginable way? Done.
- Humiliate and belittle her? Done.
- Don't believe her, always starting from the assumption (invented by him from scratch) that Eleanor always has an ulterior motive and that any action she takes is aimed at gaining something from his damned dukedom? Done.
- Force her to accept a noose contract in which she has no advantage and then modify it ONCE IT HAS ALREADY BEEN SIGNED without asking for her permission or opinion? Done this too.
- Demand her absolute obedience and deny her any kind of expression? Done.
- Keep the right to have public lovers to himrself while she is also forbidden from being able to TALK to other men? Done.
- Allow his sister - a spoiled unpleasant one - and his aunt - an old hag - to mistreat her by separating her from the very few people who seem to have a shred of humanity in this madhouse? Obviously, done. And all this while they haven't even gotten married yet. And I could continue, but I can already feel the nervousness rising up my throat like bile.
It can't even be said that MAYBE by chance Daryl (the ML) was misinterpreted by the FL's eyes, because almost all their exchanges are seen precisely from his point of view. We are forced to read his mind farts (although I suspect it's because if we read Eleanor's thoughts in those moments, it would just be an endless string of swear words and curses. Not that I can blame her, as that's MY train of thought too) ... In short, the only thing that keeps me here reading this story is the work of the translator - really well done - and the first chapter, which I really hope will connect to the story as soon as possible, even if we are at the 25th chapter. And there hasn't even been a wedding ceremony yet...
