Lu Yu’an, who had been missing since childhood, was finally found at the age of sixteen. He returned home with anticipation, only to discover that there was no longer a place for him in his own family. In his place was the well-behaved and sensible adopted son, Lu Yuning.

Lu Yu’an, who grew up in the slums, felt out of place in his own home and despised Lu Yuning for taking his position. He had hoped to reunite with his family. However, to his surprise, his father, who had promised to protect him for a lifetime, detested him and accused him of being narrow-minded and petty. His older brother, who had promised to take care of him, grew tired of him and labeled him as vain and selfish. Everyone favored Lu Yuning.

In the end, Lu Yu’an died alone on his sickbed, still unable to understand what was wrong with hating Lu Yuning. It was not until Lu Yu’an was reborn and discovered that he was just a cannon fodder character in a popular novel, and that Lu Yuning was the beloved protagonist, that he decided to quit. To his surprise, they regretted their treatment of him. Friends who had once looked down on him waited behind his classroom door with tear-filled eyes, begging for his forgiveness. His brother, who had always criticized him, ran through the pouring rain asking passersby if they had seen his younger brother. However, Lu Yu’an never turned back to look at them, not even for a moment.

I tried, but I couldn't finish this novel.

This novel focuses on 2 things: "MC and art" and "MC and his blood related family".

This was fine by me in the beginning, but I can no longer ignore issues.

The first thing is very predictable. MC is a genious artist. That's it. Oh, author tried to tell us that he achived this success by constant practice, but at the same time, there was a long lost ancient chinese technique, and MC and his teacher invented it again. As in, MC (a literal child... more>> at that point) made a significant contribution into discovering a technique, that people, who worked their whole life in this field, failed to do. Sure, Jan.

So, not much excitement on this field.

Now, about family drama. It was all good and interesting, untill it became clear, that MC punishes his family for events of the previous life. It is understandable that, knowing what they are capable of, he doesn't want to be with them, but he has no self awareness about it.

In fact, all of examples, given to us, the readers, of family "wronging" MC are because they misunderstood him. These misunderstandings are created by MC himself. In fact, this is a reccuring theme in this novel: MC is a "sin keeper", he silently covers truth so his father and bother can live in peace. Oh, so kind, oh, so selfless, are you weeping yet? (Sarcasm). I call it what it is: a victim complex.

Like, MC openly hates his adopted bother and often asks his family to kick him out. He does that for a reason:

Spoiler

When he was a child, he was forced to beg in streets. He saw his father with a new child (adopted brother), but the father passed him without recognozing him.

[collapse]

But does MC say anything? No, he doesn't.

Like, when the adopted brother was having an asthma attack behind MC's door and was smashing things to attract his attention. MC did not come to help. He didn't hear anything because he is deaf on one ear. But does MC say anything? No, he doesn't.

So from the family POV we have a person, who openly hates his adopted brother for no reason to the point of wishing him death. By MC's logic they should've ~*~beleived him~*~ no explanation needed. I'm sorry, but I'm with the family on this one.

This novel suffers from a common problem of novels, published as they are written: retcon.

Like, about MC's artistic abilities: MC's family actually found MC a teacher, but this teacher told everyone that his drawings are nothing but childish scribbles. I think (I didn't care enough to remember) it was explained with MC's teacher having a unique style, not mainstream. But every other person recognized MC's talent, so no idea what was with that teacher.

Another example is about what happened to MC when he was five. How he was lost.

Spoiler

At first we were told that he just fell into water by himself.

Then we were told that he wanted to retrieve his brother's basketball ball, that fell into water. MC never told this to anyone, because he didn't want his brother to feel guilty (MC iS a sIn KeEpEr). But then he revealed it in a most dramatic moment, to invoke guilt in his brother.

BUT THEN we were told that he actually was drowned by his father's former friend as an act of revenge. MC never told this to anyone, because he didn't want his father to feel guilty (MC iS a sIn KeEpEr). But then he revealed it in a most dramatic moment, to invoke guilt in his father.

The author squized every drop of blood from thig dog, didn't they?

How does second and third version coexists? I have no idea, and by that point didn't care.

[collapse]

About romance. 60 chapters of 77, the romance is nonexistent. The only thing we have is ML's inner conflict of "He is a child, I am despicable". Given that MC is 17 years old and ML being an adult, the only thing I can say is "Yes, he is, and, yes, you are".

In conclusion: read only if you love family dog blood drama. <<less

This is a nice yet vey heartbreaking story. Lots of chapters made me cry and im amaze on how strong willed MC is despite all the torture and heart ache he encountered as a kid.

Spoiler

MC's experience as a kidnapped/trafficked child is very heartbreaking. His experience is very painful yet he never stopped being strong and always believe in his family. So when he realize that his father and brother preferred the adopted one, it pained him. They misunderstood him until He gave up hoping for them to love him.

Im so glad that MC met ML. ML believe in him and figure out that MC is strong willed yet have a very soft heart. Its also cute that when ML realize his feeling he is very conflicted cause of their age gap. But ML respect MC very much so he just supported MCs decision. MC was the first one to confess.

Im also happy that MC was given a second chance to be happy.

One character I adore is Qianqian.. He was originally the villain of the novel. In the original plot after MC died, Qianqian killed Lu Ying (the protagonist). When MC met Qianqian in the second life, he then realize that Qianqian became the villain cause he took revenge for MC. It was then revealed that Qian is one of the children MC protected while in the hands of the traffickers.

The dark side of the novel really makes me cry specially when MCs father investigated MCs past and found that many children were killed and tortured by the traffickers 😭😭

He even found a room full of blood and saw a star drawn by blood. He then realize that MC was tortured in that room and the star was what he taught MC when he is a child 😭😭

I tried to like this but just can’t, the writer has a very strange perception of what’s right and wrong, as well as of people.

“I refuse to be the villain” is quite ironic, MC is in fact a villain and does everything in his power to act like one.

He blames whatever goes wrong in his life on the book-MC, his adoptive brother, while the boy never did anything. He’s too timid and s*upid to consciously cause any harm to anyone, he doesn’t want to either, quite the opposite, he does... more>> his best to please everyone and keep the family together.

It’s MC who tries to make his adoptive brother’s life hell, demands his family to choose between them, because his brother “stole everything from him”.

Dude was 10, dude had no say in being adopted, and immediately gave back whatever MC wanted.

He did nothing wrong, ever.

Would all be fine if MC is meant to be an envious jerk, like I thought at first, but the writer ultimately turned the whole family into villains and paints MC as the victim.

MC doesn’t communicate with his family, constantly causes trouble, demands and never gives anything back, and bullies the adoptive brother.

Sorry, but how on earth is he a victim?

Why is the blame with his family, even for stuff they didn’t even know?

When, again, MC could have solved it by simply speaking to them?

Spoiler

Like his family accusing him of not saving the adoptive brother, several times, when it happened because MC is deaf on one ear.

He never told them he’s deaf, never clarified it, but somehow the family is at fault for thinking badly of him.

Or they are blamed for stuff that happened while he was held hostage, the father once met him but walked away without helping.

The father didn’t recognise that the 10+ years old kid is MC, and MC didn’t say anything when they met, but somehow the father is at fault.

[collapse]

This happens countless times throughout the novel. Everyone else is in the wrong, always, and MC never is.

Trauma doesn’t give you a free pass to be a jerk, bully others, expect people to read your mind, or be abusive. Which MC is, massively even.

He even admitted that he doesn’t want to change. He knows he’s wrong but consciously decides to stay a jerk.

At the end the family has been (mentally) ruined by him and basically everyone around him treats him like the victim, some even approve of his behaviour, including being an envious a-hole.

What the hell did I just read and in which reality does it make sense?

Maybe I’m too old for the novel but it seems to be one of those written by an angry teen not mature enough to see their own wrongdoings and trying desperately to justify their behaviour by seeing themselves as the victim of their cruel family.

You reap what you sow. Easy as that.

Would have been a 4 stars novel if MC was meant to be a nasty person, but turning his family into the villains and blaming everything on them while absolving MC of any responsibility is just off putting. <<less

When you are constantly disappointed by the people you love from a young age, you eventually stop hoping and your love might even reach to hate and it's difficult to be indifferent to them because love and hate are the two sides of the same coin. Another review was talking about how the MC didn't communicate with his family and hating on the adopted kid but I don't think that review was fair ... more>>
Spoiler

because the MC was kidnapped, ab*sed and made to beg for money on the streets for years. He was clinging onto the hope that his dad would save him and when he finally saw his dad he was elated and grabbed onto him only to be brushed away in disgust while his dad went away carrying another child. As for the adopted kid, he threw away meds he was supposed to be taking on daily basis and the MC could see him doing it from his room and this is not the only thing that kid does that leads to the MC not liking him. The reason why the MC doesn't like him is not only because the adopted kid took what was his, its mainly because the MC is the only one who could clearly see how toxic the adopted kid was being. Like yeah that kid has his insecurities and all but that's no way to take advantage of other people's love towards you.

[collapse]

Expecting the MC to communicate with his family who only look at what they want to see and expecting him to not hate on the adopted kid is equivalent to asking him to be a saint. The review also stated that the title is ironic and yes the MC does come off as an extreme person but that's because of his past experiences and personally I think it's his defence mechanism. He himself is actually a nice person and overall I really like this novel a lot and I would definitely recommend others to check if out too. <<less

One of the BEST rebirth story I have read. There were many chapters I cried for the MC experiences. This is a story with little side romance for ML and mainly focused on character development of the MC toward his familial love.

The characters in this story are very 3D unlike other rebirth story. The MC is very human; he has flaws and weaknesses. He hated the original MC who replaced him. This is understandable as his father and brother no longer love him and only love the adoptive brother. He... more>> was kidnapped and tortured for five years while his family moved on with a new adoptive son to replace him. Only a saint can love and live with your replacement so I find the MC very human in this sense. I love the MC. I can relate to him.

The adoptive brother (og MC) is also not a brainless villain. He knew his position and always tried to give way for the MC as long as the MC NEVER takes 'what belong to him' (in this case it's the MC biological father and brother). He is a unique villain because he truly believe he has never done anything wrong. However, he has done a lot of wrong things except he just know how to seek the best position for himself to make him look innocent. Here are a few examples (spoiler) :

Spoiler
  1. OG MC (villain adoptive brother) refused to cure his asthma because he like to use that to make people feel bad for him and take his side. By being sick, friends and his adoptive father and brother would always take his side. He knew this and always intentionally never bring his medicine and always throw away his medicine to make it seems like MC is attacking him whenever he has an asthma attack.
  2. He helped his real father and brother drugged and killed his adoptive father. Although he found out later that the drug he was giving his adoptive father would kill him so he switch the drug, he did not do it because of good intention but only did it because he knew that if that adoptive father die he would be suspected. He also never told his adoptive brother this because he was afraid they would disowned him. He is someone who used a lot of money and wanted to keep his adoptive family because they are rich, not because he love them.
  3. He helped his real father and brother killed his adoptive brother by giving the GPS tracker in a charm to his adoptive brother so they can create a car crash accident to kill the adoptive brother. He claim to be innocent and did not know that the charm has GPS tracker but he lied. Why did I know that he lied? Because he knew his real father switched his adoptive father medicine to kill him but hide the truth so there is no way he would not know there is something wrong with the charm since the charm was given to him by his real father to give to his adoptive family.
  4. If you read the extras, you will get the real ending in the original book where the og MC help his real father and brother steal his adoptive family wealth and then threw the adoptive family away when they became poor. He pretended to be innocent and said that he found his real family so he left his adoptive family but the real reason was because his adoptive family became poor and he didn't want them anymore.
  5. There was also the part where he stole MC painting and pretended the painting was his and lied about it. The sad thing was that when it was exposed, MC real father and brother still sided with the adoptive brother instead of MC. The villain (adoptive bro/og mc) has all the love from his real and adoptive family while MC only have the love from ML and his family.

All in all, I supported MC leaving his real family. There were time when it was sad for his real brother and father but I think that was probably the dead mom teaching them a lesson. They don't deserved MC love since MC gave them many chances and they always gave up MC for the adoptive son. Later they only regretted it because they were ashamed of themselves and wanted to take MC back to get rid of their guilt. I still do not believe they love the MC that much.

Good thing is that villain (og mc) was finally disowned in the end from his assistance of killing his adoptive family. He was given a chunk of money to live by himself by his adoptive family but he wasted all the money and was finally sold off.

[collapse]

I am amazed the original gong had little importance in this book, lol. He only appears in one scene in the whole story. <<less

Hello! I finished the novel (yes the extras too)

It was good, ngl. But something is lacking, and adding something more would be too much. The story got me hooked because of the angsty narration. Do give it a try!

Like the other reviews said it's focused on MC and art. There's the family drama, mc's development, and a tiny weenie romance....

Note! I wasn't planning to rate it but I misclicked I'm sorry!

Spoiler

OKAY! It's like the story kept getting deeper, like something was dramatically uncovered, then tadah! There's more! And you know what?!?!! There's more underneath it! As the story progresses, more about the past is revealed. I can't even comprehensively do a review for this because of the mixed emotions. Do give it a try please, I want someone to feel my frustrations too.

One thing I can clearly say is that If I were to reincarnate in this novel I'm gonna punch everyone, then punch myself next. OH AND YEA BLAME THE ADULTS! COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY PEOPLE

Like other reviewers that gave low ratings, I was also very very irritated with MC because he keeps on bottling up everything and blaming his father and brother for not being sensitive enough... But while taking a pause (to calm my nerves), I started analyzing each character.

Spoiler

MC: MC has undergone so much trauma especially under adults. So he grew up shouldering everything by himself, manning up and taking responsibility as a child. And thinking of his world during his childhood, his world is very small! Basically he had no knowledge on how to cope up, how to properly resolve issues, how to defend himself intellectually, he basically grew wild without any fostering (aside from the 5 years of pampering childhood). His concepts, principles, etc. is not fully developed or mature enough to properly integrate into the society. So I understand how he just keeps bottling everything up. He is a survivor, he endures every ab*se coming his way, he can attack but he is wired to defend and protect others and not himself (subtle unintentional psychological suggestions by his mom to protect).

MC's father

This dad is a good father in terms of caring and as a provider (as can be seen by his treatment with yunning), but fails to be a father where it truly matters. He has an escape mentality, which was earlier on criticized by his wife but he didn't dwell to correct it, he loves all his sons but feeling alone is not enough to fill his supposed roles as a father. But its hard to also blame him as he constantly mourns for his wife. So how can he properly give love to others when he himself is broken. I know other single parents can do it. But after experiencing depression myself, if I was placed in his shoes, I wouldn't even know how I will function. It would be great if I can take courage and live for my sons, but there's also a chance to numb myself with work to be able to provide financially (to the point that he became s*upid in trusting the wrong people) and let grief overtake me when alone.

MC's brother:

MC's brother also loves MC on his own way but it was overshadowed by his grievances, which he soon realizes include his own frustration for himself and guilt, towards MC. moreover, as his father started his escape mentality, he has to clean up all the mess left behind and take care of his remaining loved ones at a very young age in the midst of despair.

Yunning (adopted kid)

Its also hard to blame him. He is adopted and being adopted doesn't give him any security. He also knows that the love that he experiences from his adopted family is just borrowed that's why he keeps on affirming people's love for him by not taking the asthma inhalers or meds at all times and lost his own identity just to conform to the character that he thinks people around him wants him to be. His heart is full of holes that even if he was showered with love by the people around him, he still can't get enough.

In general, I really feel bad whenever adopted children were depicted as a 2 dimensional villain. Like, its not their fault to be an orphan. They just want a small place on earth that they can call their own to feel their sense of existence. Like all others as stated in Sigmund Freud's argument about the importance of parental relationships on psychological development were supported by one of Harlow's experiments, where infant monkeys were placed in cages with two wire mothers, one with a bottle and one covered in soft cloth. The monkeys would go to the wire mother for food, but spent most of their time with the cloth mother. When frightened, they would seek comfort from the cloth mother. It Showed that babies have social and physical needs, and that they need a secure base to feel safe and gain confidence.

[collapse]

So basically all of them are broken and tend to be selfish due to their own heartaches. MC's rebirth is basically a journey of breaking himself free from all this entangled web of heartaches and hurting each other.

I love how raw the emotions are in this novel.

I really just want to give all of them a hug because they are all good and not totally evil people but broken inside so they function abnormally. But thinking again, this is also a way to describe a villain 😂. I just love and hate these characters 🥹🥹🥹❤️❤️❤️ <<less

This is definitely all about the family drama and some twists.

As with stories of swapped birth, this had a similar vibe where I found it kind of hard to put total blame on the other child (in this case it's the adopted child who technically took MC's place). It's just a story and he gave off total white lotus vibes but I just kind of felt a little bad for him. Because sometimes, it felt a bit like circumstances.
Spoiler

But I totally agree with MC on why he doesn't like the white lotus. On how it seemed like he places important responsibilities i.e. His emergency meds on others rather than take ownership for himself.

[collapse]

So while I'm all for the family drama and face slapping, it's just a tiny bit harder to read in this book.
Spoiler

MC's family s**ked but I'm not too sure if they were horrible to the point of no return. MC had the right and should cut them off at the end. But it's like, they just crumbled after that in a not too satisfying way because I almost want them to be a bit worse to deserve that ending.

[collapse]

I really liked the romance line of the book. Especially with how nice ML is. He's definitely just a supporting role here than a dual main character.
Spoiler

ML realises his feelings first but he sets clear boundaries with their positions. Even after MC confesses, he gives them time.

[collapse]

Overall, it's not a long read, I'll be off to find others.

Did not read the extras and I don't need to.

This story was good, quite enjoyable. The author kept making me angry with every cutoff of behind the scenes information. Though they did that, it did make the ending feel better as bam, but the author is too happy ending.

The author rushed the ending and made it happy with all the karma and shit. Over all 9/10, lost points for how the ending was done. Did not like ending, otherwise enjoyable.

This is a well written story, probably one of my favourite stories for real Vs fake child. It made me cry until my eyes turned red (might just be seasonal depression).

It's always interesting to delve into the psychology of families that lose their child. In this case, because they couldn't face their guilt, they chose to deem MC the sinner.

  • I will never understand mistreating the child of your dead loved one.
  • Rich people using ignorance as an excuse is always off-putting. They have the resources to investigate if they really want to.
The child trafficking plot was so morbid

  • Parents who "save/adopt" trafficked children like Wang Ru. But really they are just stealing the children
  • Children being disabled like in Slumdog Millionaire
I applaud authors who do not erase their character's trauma. Being trafficked &... more>> ab*sed would leave an indelible mark on anyone. It was beautiful that MC retained his morals despite growing in such a dirty environment. I just wish MC & Qianqian received therapy.

Last but not least, the insidious plot that ruined MC's life. This wasn't some basic thing like a nanny or poor woman switching kids. This was a sinister and convoluted game of revenge. Nobody won.

  • Spoiler

Mr Lu, MC's father, had an investor friend, Old Yu, who got arrested. Old Yu resented Mr Lu for not assisting him. He drowned MC so he got lost and trafficked. Old Yu's first son, Secretary Du, who had been supported financially by MC's mum wasn't grateful, but became a plant by Mr Lu. When MC returned, Secretary Du deliberately ruined relationship between MC and Mr Lu.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

Mr Lu had actually known Lu Yuning was Old Yu's son and adopted him to help his friend in prison. Yet when Lu Yuning knew his real family, he assisted in the plot to destroy Lu family, directly or indirectly. Mr Lu favoured the son of the person who destroyed his own son. How ironic.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

Even more ironic, Old Yu was determined to destroy Lu family "for Yuning's sake". But Lu Yuning was nothing without Lu family and didn't want a criminal father and brother either.

    [collapse]
It was a HE for me. I'm always happy when ml's allow their partners to grow and thrive before diving into romance. <<less

This is one of my cups of tea, when I read in my spare time. The early part of the novel made my eyes wet ಥ‿ಥ.

I think this is still pretty good (although it leaves a weird/bitter aftertaste, for me), it's just a matter of whether this is the type of story you like.

Just try it first, if it doesn't suit you, just drop it without giving one star.

Pretty good read (☞ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ☞

This novel feels similar to I Woke Up and Was Pregnant, in that MC has a father and older brother who treat him badly but regret it later on; but in this novel, his family just don't give him much of a chance because the adopted son has been with them so much longer.

Rather than the romance, I kept reading for the family drama and angst - there's so many things that MC's father and brother have misunderstandings about, but the reveal was extremely satisfying. I don't have many opinions... more>> about ML, but it was because he was so accepting of MC that MC fell in love.

Overall, a pretty good read! <<less

I've reached chapter 31.

MC is flawed. He had to survive under extreme/unsafe environments and has developed extreme survival techniques that unfortunately don't serve him in a "safe" environment, causing him to be misunderstood. At the end of the day, he is a child, that hasn't seen a lick of therapy, and it is the responsibility of the adults around him to help him and stop being so biased against him. Even in his second life, he doesn't magically have the "correct" way to act, because he hasnt truly healed from... more>> the trauma. He's still temperamental, violent and doesn't know how to articulately stand up for himself or others, and simply resigned to believing that something is wrong with Him specifically.

It is unfair that he's giving them ultimatums to choose between him and the adopted son, but it makes sense from the perspective that he's survived significant childhood trauma, and in terms of mental age/development is naturally immature and insecure.

However stop acting like the adopted son is some kind of saint. He purposefully lets people (family and classmates) ostracize and misunderstand the MC by omitting the clarifying details. In fact, it's pretty clear that he Wants to be the preferred person between the two of them. He seems to be doing it unconsciously but he is using textbook green tea b*txh tactics. He purposefully walks around without an inhaler for heck's sake despite having severe asthma attacks!
Spoiler

for examples of the green tea-ness: When MC returns home, he says there is a new refurbished room... meaning they had a whole extra room when they adopted, but Chose to move the adopted son into his old room. MC's mother's paintings? Given to adopted son (who he has Never met). The tree that was planted when MC was born? Cut down for adopted son. MC's clothes? Adopted son's clothes. MC returned to a home that erased all traces of him, and adopted son lets the brother and the father essentially use him to replace MC (eg, when brother bought adopted son a basketball, he is aware that 1. He doesnt like basketball, 2. MC is the one that likes basketball and 3. Brother subconsciously thought of his "precious little brother" when he saw the basketball and is mixing up the two brothers, AND CHOOSES NOT TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THAT). In the first life, adopted son got a Master Art Teacher (Master Yang) because he accidentally got a hold of MC's art teacher's (Old Man Li) painting, LIED and said he painted it, and the only person that could verify (Master Yan) is sick and dying from grief. (The only reason Master Yan is still alive in the second life is because MC has actual proof of Old Man Li's life/house/posessions and it renewed his vigor, unlike adopted son's LIE that it was just Some Old Man at the park he chatted with)

[collapse]

Matter of fact, they even introduced a character that is intentionally using the same green tea tactics, and is using it against adopted son, to show us that omitting claifying facts Is Damaging and Is Intentional.

My only gripe with this book is the choice of ML:

Spoiler

When we met Mo Yinxue, my first impression of him was, Finally, we have the father/brother figure replacement that MC desperately needs in his life, especially in the instances where the narrative directly compares Mo Yinxue with MC's brother (a ladder almost fell on MC and both Mo Yinxue and brother caught it at the same time, but only Mo Yinxue got thanks) and father (when MC encounters trouble at school, father jumps to blaming and punishing MC where as Mo Yinxue starts on MC's side and teaches him better tactics for encountering bullies in private.) He's even old enough to be MC's guardian. I was happy that through MC's relationship with Mo Yinxue, MC can heal the trauma that he got from brother and father.

When we meet Xia YiQian, there's an air of mystery and tragedy around him, that him and MC has some history they share cuz of the trafficking incident, and that he tried to kill adopted son in the past life when MC succumbed to his cancer. Then, he transfers to MC's schools starts out-green-tea-b*txhing the adopted son out of revenge and seems to have had special transmigrated/dream-something circumstances like MC. Hear I thought, yes, introducing the black-belly ML :). I like him already. And MC thinks he's cute and sickly QianQian. Typical two faced ML behaviour. Very age-appropriate...

...

.

WRONG!!

I did some spoilers-digging cuz I was starting to get a sick gut feeling:

THE OLD MAN MO YINXUE IS THE ML!!!!!!! it makes me upset because I've always thought of MC as an extremely traumatized child. And here is a guardian figure, being patient, understanding, taking care of his health, invested in his studies and talents. It honestly sucks. I feel sick that Mo Yinxue is essentially father, bigbrother AND lover to MC.

[collapse]

I still want to read it for the familial drama/conflict, but my gosh when ML starts getting feelings for MC, I Am Going To Drop. Will edit when I've decided to drop. <<less

i liked the catharsis of this novel; I tend to prefer rebirth stories without a reconciliation path so this suited my tastes nicely. I wouldn't reread it and it does have flaws in execution, but it's a good page turner if you're in the mood for something like this! My rating would be more like a 4 but I think the current rating is a little harsh, so I'll give it 5.

to address the reviewers criticising how MC refuses to speak up about his difficulties and causes misunderstandings, I think... more>> they are forgetting that this is a rebirth story haha. It was covered early on how MC tried desperately to defend himself in his previous life only to be met with more vitriol, so it's strange to expect him to try the same tactics after he died from them lol <<less

I tried and gave it a chance, but I don't think I can finish this novel.

The concept behind is fine, but the execution is all over the place. With all the experiences MC describes, you would think he is someone in his mid to late 20s, but no, he hasn't even graduated high school, not just in this life but also in his previous one.

Coming to MC an his family, they were painted to be the villian, the one who neglected the true heir and favoring the adopted one.. But... more>> honestly, I don't see any other way they can proceed. Lu Yu'an (MC), he is dyslexic, deaf in one ear, rebellious due to his wrong upbringing. When he was brought back, there were clear communication gap between all 4 of the family members, leading to MC getting isolated. And because he was ostracized right from his kidnapped days, he was not ready to open up to his father or his brother. No effort were made by all 3 of them, and it festered into the situation that none can salvage. And the adopted son, I truly pity him. Both children are the product of their circumstances, and it is inevitable that he clash head on directly or indirectly. With this premise, if the author had taken an emotional route, the novel would have had a nice character growth and rounded story telling. But in many places, the writing is all over, plot point not coherent and many places, you can't distinguish whether MC is describing present event or past.

And frankly addition of ML into this mix is not helping the narrative. This guy is in his late 20s, supporting a high schooler under the premise that MC is his master's junior's disciple. What should have been a brotherly act, turned romantic, frankly a g*ooming situation. How could a grown man think a high schooler can become his someone special, when ML clearly know MC's trauma, and his longing for a strong male figure. It feels like he is just taking advantage of the fact that no one can oppose this.

Overall, it's a okish novel to skim through to pass boredom. <<less

This was honestly an interesting novel to read. It had the usual lost real child replaced by adopted child trope, but refreshingly, the adopted child was not evil. He was just a naive, pampered idiot who was the cause of MC's ill-fatedness without even knowing.

The story had the usual 'MC dies and realizes he's a cannon fodder of a novel' trope, but the original novel was barely spoken of, as if the author kept forgetting they wrote this trope in the first place, which is a minus.

The MC being actually... more>> disabled was also interesting to see, because his deafness was not cured, unlike many novels where when time is turned back, the MC is completely healthy. No, MC here was scarred from bottom to up, disabled in one ear, and had actual problems from childhood ab*se. Truly refreshing to see authors not making their MC miracle children.

ML was also a nice guy, not that 'cold handsome CEO' trope which is utterly boorish to read atp. He actually had a personality, and he had scars too! Finally a ML that isn't perfect.

Couple got together when MC was a minor which is kinda ehhhh... but this is a common trope in CN so it's not like I'm not used to it (yikes).

Age gap is 10 years, give or take, just so you know. Don't read it if you don't support it.

All in all, an interesting little novel that's isn't all that high in quality but still contains some nice little details which I appreciated. <<less

At first, I just want to read one chapter to see whether this novel is a good future read or not. BUT, after one chapter, I cannot put down the novel at all. I'M SERIOUSLY INVESTED!

I usually don't read angst and family drama. This is the first one that doesn't give headache after reading it. I like the way that author kept the MC trauma and does not erased it halfway or make the MC like a forgiving saint.

The characters are broken and flawed. It is interesting to see how... more>> they handle their situation. It teaches about how the human psychology could develope in certain situations through a third person perspective lenses. Since, we as a human only see thing clearly when it was not on our own nose.

Plus, like Lu Yu'an once said
Spoiler

"You don't really think it's their fault? You are innocent and have been deceived, right?"

. In life, every choices (which include words & actions), no matter the circumstances you are in, it have consequences. Whether to you directly or indirectly or to the people around you (close relationship, family and etc.). Regretting is good but for how long? It up to you to decide. But, life goes on, like Lu Yu'an's life.

The only beef I have is the ending is too.... rushed. So, far everything is 10/10 experienced. Good job author 👏 👏👏

and thank you translator for the translations 😘 <<less

Gosh, I really like this one. A lot of fake/real young master books focus heavily on blood relationships vs. Being raised as part of the family (with the plot going either way), and this novel does consider that a little bit but the primary focus is on how perception shapes relationships and how first impressions, even of people or family members you know years ago, can shape how you treat them and what you believe they're like. Family are those who can see past appearances or first impressions and know... more>> you for who you are as a whole, and love and protect all of you.

The ML
Spoiler

Mo Yinxue, is such a huge example of this - his initial interaction with Lu Yu'an is seeing him in the aftermath of a fight (that LYA won). But MYX is so observant and so focused on LYA that he's the one who notices and points out LYA can paint, has hearing issues, is wary of being in vulnerable situations, and so much more. Their relationship is built so solidly thanks to MYX not just assuming LYA is some sort of gangster bad boy on their first meeting.

[collapse]

The romance is really a treat, and so are all of the relationships that Lu Yu'an has with others. He deserves the world, and he gets it ♥

(also, yes, the translation is not very good - it's a barely edited MTL, so I really hope we'll get a good retranslation at some point!) <<less

I love this MC so much! I give 5 stars for him alone. He is someone I really would love to hug.

Warning: The MC is 16/17 and the ML is 27/28, so there is an age gap.

Now, about the story...

Spoiler

Our MC was lost as a child and found by child traffickers. He was horrendously ab*sed, along with many other children. After escaping, he lived as a son of a woman who was also a trafficker victim. However, she married a very abusive man, and the cycle continued.

Later, MC was found by his biological family and returned home. Unfortunately, they had adopted another boy, who was now a firm member of their family, leaving MC to feel insecure. He just could not accept this adopted child no matter what. Because of that, a rift grew between him and his family.

After trying so many times and being misunderstood so many times, MC gave up hope of ever reconciling. He then grew very sick and died of gastric cancer.

Then he was reborn.

He no longer craved their love and affection. He gave them chance after chance, but ultimately, he severed their relationship for good, and never looked back.

Why do I like this novel so much? Well, it was heartbreaking. Reading about how much he was misunderstood by everyone just broke me. Reading about his experiences after getting lost just made me cry. He lives to protect the weak and vulblnerable, no matter what effect it has on his body, but yet never takes credit for his kindness. He doesn't do it for attention or glory. He does it because he wants to, and thatnis who he is. That's why I love this MC and want to hug him.

In a world of darkness, barely knowing any warmth past the age of 5 years old, when he got lost, he met someone who thinks he is already excellent. Someone he can trust absolutely, who has his back and believes he is worthy. This is our ML. I am completely on Team MC, so I won't talk too much about ML. He was ok, maybe a little creepy for crushing on a student, but hey, that's just me.

Other noteworthy things about the book: It has a lot to do with ancient chinese painting and lost arts from previous dynasties. MC doesn't believe he is good at painting, but his skill and knowledge are slowly revealed little by little. He is a genius painter and knowledgable in restoration techniques taught by his master. MC is also deaf in his right ear, a fact he hides for a very long time.

The face-slapping is more poignant for me because unlike some other rebirth novels, this one lets you peek into others' POV, so we see as they go through annoyance, disappointment, irritation, to realization, guilt, and shame. I saw it all with every turn of the so-called page.

The ending was abrupt and I didn't read the extras, but MC is just about to head to uni. The end.

[collapse]

I absolutely will be checking this out again in the future. To be clear, the romancenis not the focus of this novel, as MC is still very young. This is about MC's journey through a horrific life before being reborn, where he was able to let go of many of the burdens he had before and move out of the darkness and into the light. He says it best, "He really doesn't need protection." He can take care of his own matters. <<less

I've read once that tragic stories are just a safe way to feel sad or even grieve.

This novel is ridiculous and overblown (MC's past was unreasonably, unnecessarily hard), but I love it because part of it resonates with me.

So I guess it depends on what are you expecting from this novel. I probably wouldn't recommend it for its plot. But it feels almost cathartic how the family drama is magnified to the extreme and still MC is able to leave it behind and prosper in his own right.
