Beta test is over!

The official server play is the real world!

A lot of things are hidden under the veil of the empire-building game ‘Elix’.

In this game, where the player becomes the ‘king’ and builds the country with the gods, the player’s character race is determined based on the aptitude test that is conducted before playing. Once you enter the game with the character that has been decided, the player has a helper god called ‘Daegong’. That was the beginning of the empire-building game, ‘Elix’.

Elix was a game of extreme difficulty, where the player’s empire would collapse due to riots, coups, assassinations, etc. if they were tyrannical, lazy, or ruthless in building their empire. They also failed due to the invasion of other players. Nevertheless, many people were fascinated and intoxicated by Elix. After six months, the news of the official service of the game was announced to the world. Many people were excited and expected. But that was not something to be excited about, expected, or waited for.

Yeah.

That was not something to be excited about.

[Preview] “I’ll give you ten days.”

The hand that choked his neck was suffocating. His toes barely touched the ground. The words he heard before folding. Sehyun still couldn’t forget the expression that was full of hatred.

The forgiveness he begged for many times and the conversation he asked for many times were all trampled in front of the words of hatred. That’s why he decided to fold, and that’s why he couldn’t go that day. Afraid to face that expression again. Afraid to hear the words that he hates again.

“It would be better for you to come on your own feet. Before I cut off your limbs and take you away.”

The first thing that comes to my mind the first time I read this is: "this remind me of SAO" (lol)

Generally, I love it so much because the plot is pretty interesting and I also love the dynamics between MC and other characters.... more>>
Spoiler

One important note: even though the MC is the "king" of the rank 1 powerful kingdom, he himself is not strong at all–but instead he gives 'buffs' to other characters to make them stronger. So I hope you're not confused and get annoyed whenever you see MC couldn't defend himself even though he's the king of the most powerful kingdom in the game.

[collapse]

Even then, I love how MC is not some pushover kind and instead the type who stand on his own belief and principle and also refused to just help anyone who refused to change and stand for themselves. The ML on the other side, is truly a cold, discipline, protective, and a man-of-few-words kind so the misunderstanding between him and MC lasted for quite a while because of the difficulty of their communications.

I read the manhwa first before the novel, so when I continue reading the novel I got very confused because there are several differences between them: first, in the manhwa we met the ML pretty fast when in the novel there are at least around 30 chapters before we could meet the ML. Second, the manhwa is R18 meanwhile the novel is only R18 in the side story, so manhwa reader would probably judge the ML harshly than the novel reader. And so, it's really worth it to start reading the novel from the very beginning even though you already read the manhwa, because there are a lot of things that being cut & modified.

Side note tho, I just love how MC is very well-loved by his vassals and friends. The platonic love between them is truly strong and beautiful. <<less

How to Survive as a Player had a great start, with an interesting premise that was different from the clichés of transmigration (this fact alone earned it 2 stars in my review). The characters showed great potential and personality. The construction of a dynamic that was kind of like a found family was cute and very welcome. The pacing was good. And the plot seemed well structured with a hint of mystery like "What happened to the MC's kingdom? Who is he really and why doesn't he return to his... more>> vassals?".

Everything was going well, until the moment the MC returns to his kingdom for good (in chapter
Spoiler

51, but specifically from chapter 61 onwards).

[collapse]
From then on, it seems like the author simply threw everything that was built in the tr*sh.

The MC (Sehyun) went from a gray guy, who knew that sacrifices were necessary and that one couldn't be a vigilante who blindly helps everyone to a kind of generous deity who feels bad even letting his warriors train. Like, um Sehyun... where tf did you go?

Some inconsistencies are clear, like: at the beginning Sehyun said that
Spoiler

he hadn't treated his subjects well and that's why he was afraid to return to the kingdom, then he says that he treated them in the best way possible.

[collapse]
Author, did you forget that?

Spoiler

The fact that he abandoned his kingdom is not even mentioned among his subjects, not even a hint of discomfort like "wow, didn't you think about us?". He simply came back and started ruling as if he had never left them behind, even though that was one of the main points in the plot.

[collapse]

And WTF happened to this novel that OUT OF NOWHERE turned into a harem???

Literally, every man (with the exception of Kim Gapjum, Jaeyoung and Dohyun) seems to want to f*ck him. The subjects craving for attention because they are based on the MC himself? okay. But this necessity could be solved with walks, conversations or quality time, in general, right? But nooooo, the novel decides to solve this need with forced physical touch, FOR EVERYONE. Everyone has the need to hug, hold hands and touch Sehyun. It's not really inappropriate, and I know the idea it's not a romantic/lustful thing but it's still weird as f*ck and the subjects' personalities are limited to that and Sehyun's personality to a saint that satisfy those needs.

There were so many characters with potential, even the MC himself, and the author simply threw it all away just like that.

And again, all of this happened in less than 10 chapters???? It almost seems like the original author gave up on the work and handed it over to someone else to continue.

That is the key point to me. Because that was NOT what the novel structured in the earlier chapters.

And also we have the Grand Duke (Luhak, our ML) who has no personality at all. He just... exists. At first he was mysterious and had a very strong resentment towards Sehyun, leaving a hint of doubt about how he would react when he met his king again. But that kind of falls apart after Sehyun returns.

I think the Grand Duke's only function in the plot is to cause a little angst due to a poor miscommunication from time to time.

Because man, I've never seen such an inconsistent character before.

One moment he's angry, the next he obeys with extreme loyalty, the next he crosses the line with the MC (a not so slight SA), then he hates him again, then he worries about the MC, takes care of him as if he were the most precious person in the world, then threatens to kill him and- MAKE UP YOUR MIND, DAMN IT.

Anyway, I'm going to give this rating out of respect for the unique premise of this novel (plot and worldbuilding) and the potential it showed in the beginning.

Besides, the novel isn't atrocious, it's a somewhat decent reading, and I'm confident that those who like to read average novels just to pass the time and don't mind harems will probably like this one. If this is your thing go ahead.

But my personal opinion still lingers, had it been developed with more care, it would definitely be at the top of the list of best fantasy BL novels and among my favorites. A great wasted potential. It's really a shame. <<less

The first 50ish chapters were really strong. The plot was interesting, world building is innovative, and the details in the problems that come with having wings was a unique perspective.

However the ML after a certain point (and majority of supporting characters) seem to be watered down to become devotees of the MC. Even the MC himself loses some of his defining traits. The second half of the final battle also loses to the plot which is unfortunate.

I will say though that 3 characters are the saving grace of this novel:... more>> Agatha, Tara, and Kim Gapjun. Kim takes on a cranky mentor role that never changes, while Tara and Agatha serve as major supporting roles that work together to basically save the universe (also they pass the Bechdel test!) with Agatha being the forefront of the duo to save everyone not once but TWICE?? Atp make my girl Aggie the MC she’ll show you how it’s done <<less

I started with the webtoon first and got impatient so I read the novel. I started from chapter 1 and im so glad I did because theres so much more information that the webtoon does not cover. This is a well written novel imo, so I was a bit surprised when I saw the rating. ML is overprotective of MC and although he can be cruel at times, he truly cares for MC. The plot is so interesting that even without the romance, I feel like it'll be a good... more>> read! <<less

Started reading, thought "this feels familiar?" Turns out I had bookmarked it after reading the oddly-disjointed and overly-sexualized manhwa that starts at chapter 50 for some reason. I knew the novel would be better so I'm glad I came back to it.

Setting 9/10 - really unique and cool worldbuilding, with pretty good execution. Kings build their kingdoms, but their lives are constantly in danger from external and internal threats. At first it feels like trope-salad, but the author ties everything together pretty well. I still have several settings-related questions, but... more>> since I didn't finish, maybe they're answered later.

In the manhwa they make it out to be that everyone only lusts after celestials, but whether it's being euphemistic or not, there's also a cannibalistic element to it. This leads to some gory scenes that add a twisted element to the already religious overtones.

Characters 9/10 - The relationship between the MC and his vassals is akin to the love and reverence between that of a parent/child or believer/god. Whether you interpret that as romantic love is dealer's choice and most dealers choose yes. I think most people jump to that conclusion because it's a man showing very maternal nurturing affection and is generous with skinship. Far be it from me to be the ship police, but 14+ men's romantic interest is too many for me. (Maybe I'm just a coward)

The relationship between the MC and ML is ultra-slow burn plus misunderstandings. It's entirely understandable, but frustrating nonetheless.

Spoiler

It's understandable that the guides purposely interfered with their relationship because it put the world at risk if their affinity is too high. It's understandable that the MC, who has lived in scorn his whole life, can't handle the ML's scathing rejection and tries to run away. Also reasonable that the duke, who's gone through 42 failed kings and got his hopes up, would be especially disappointed and distrustful at his abandonment. We also know that just because they clear the misunderstanding, it doesn't mean the hurt they caused each other goes away, which takes time. But OMG KISS ALREADY

[collapse]

Romance aside, it's always fun to watch characters with powers that aren't useful at first glance, but become indispensable later. MC is pretty weak on his own but is a buffing character, allowing his retainers to shine brighter. Celestials are the "weakest" race, but often have healing or production strengths. Overall quality-wise I'd give it a 3/5, but since there were some unique and surprising aspects I'll add another star for 4/5, and since I didn't finish I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt. I made the actual rating higher so it doesn't drag it down. <<less

It was actually a nice read. I don't know why the low score. Is it because of fhe first impression the MC gave? It was building and running an empire kind of mode. Yaoi version of Rirumu the Slime. Just that, MC at first ran away from responsibilities because ML rejected him from his confession. It was misunderstanding actually for the better early chapters. But that's all.

I have read this novel a long time ago and just gave a review 🤭.

In my opinion, the most remarkable thing about this novel is its world-building; the author did a great job in creating the world of this novel. The beginning part is very good; we learn that various kingdoms have different races, and it's very enjoyable to have a main character who has wings. I really like the details that were included throughout the story.

The MC has a weak personality and is also physically weak, but he is... more>> only submissive to his grand duke and doesn't let other kingdoms take advantage of him. He is very kind to his people, so it's natural that they deeply cherish and love the MC. When the misunderstanding about being abandoned is revealed, I actually hope that everyone in the kingdom knows that they weren't actually hated by the MC, which led to them being abandoned.

I don't hate this cold and tough male lead; at least it's clear that he truly loves and cares for the female lead, and his jealousy is also quite enjoyable to watch.

This novel has a satisfying ending with an epic fight scene at the end and a sweet and tender side story. <<less

Came here because I fell in love with the manhwa.

As one reviewer put it, it had a solid start but the latter half just kinda... I wouldn't say it fell apart but I felt it was disorganized plotwise, romance aspect, and even character development.

There were tons of things I wish the author fleshed out earlier or in a different matter which I'll discuss later in a spoiler tag. Additionally, while the world building is imaginitive, there are some holes— which I don't know if it's from a mistranslation or from... more>> the author themselves. Also, as we know, the characters get s**ked into their game, which is vaguely described as done through the screen, but I felt it would have been stronger (or logical) if it was a virtual dive world like SAO. Everyone comes really attached with their empires and citizens (and for MC, vice versa) that it felt like there's a disconnect with the scenes described vs how I imagined it.

On Do Sehyun (MC) and character development:
Spoiler

He is sassier than in the manhwa imo, but I felt like his massive distrust (which ig is borne from adoptive families rejecting him) and the way it's resolved felt glossed over. That, he suddenly was able to overcome it to win the battle. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't get how he obtained the Unity buff skill except for the fact that he realized he was very distrustful vs others, and he really needed it to win the battle, please. Well, that's how it felt like to me, and I wished the author tackled this issue sooner, since now it's more deus ex machina.

[collapse]

On romance and character development:
Spoiler

And that wasn't the only thing that felt DEM, but the romance and character development as well. I guess it can't be helped because there's too many characters in the cast, but if that was the case, then I wish we could've gone a better handling of MC's character development and romance better? I felt like the plot got too much in the way of that too, hence why I think there's a sense of disorganization.

[collapse]

On the translation:
Spoiler

100% better than the MTL floating around BUT not perfect— there are pronoun changes and the names of skills and characters changes often, sometimes even in the same paragraph (Junghan becoming Jeonghan, Iobel becoming Eobell.) But I'm still thankful because reading through the MTL gives me more of a headache.

[collapse]

Overall, I'll give it a 7/10— there's a lot of potential in this however execution isn't perfect, yet I still did quite enjoy it. But I'm quite biased, so instead of rating it a 3/5 I'm bumping it up to 4. <<less

My review for this novel is a 3 star because I felt like the whole book could’ve ended a lot earlier than what was written, therefore it lost me in the last chapters. This novel was ok-ish. It started with a strong premise and plot. A game where every player transmigrated and now they fight to survive, like other books with the same theme, with a heavy medieval fantasy feel to it. But it went down as it progressed. If I have to divide my review in the good and... more>> the bad it will be:

-The good-

Spoiler
  • Sehyun’s character: as an MC, he is likeable. Not a pushover, knows his strengths and weaknesses. Basically the brain in the team. Also he is a Celestial, so as someone obsessed with angels and myths, that’s a plus lol
  • Other characters had their reasons to be. I like that we got a glimpse of almost everybody.
  • The fact that everybody was needed was nice. Every character carried the plot at some point.
  • The questions about how the players got in the game and what exactly was the system keeps you hooked. That was my main motivation as I read through the book.
    [collapse]
Now, the BAD. And I will try to make it short.

Spoiler
  • The romance between the MC and ML was very... mid. How should I say it? Anticlimactic. I don’t know if it’s because the book didn’t really spent time exploring the relationship between Sehyun and Ruhak (his Grand Duke) that every moment that was supposed to be romantic, it felt hollow. Even at the chapter when the misunderstanding was resolved and they declared their feelings, I couldn’t connect to it. Which brings me to the next point.
  • Luhak’s character is empty. We really don’t know much about him, even Sehyun himself says so in one of the chapters: he feels he doesn’t know Luhak at all, and I’m with him. Apart from knowing he is obsessed with Sehyun, he was the previous king and that he is a strong-willed character, nothing about him made me connect to Luhak in a deeper level. It’s like he is just... there. And that feeling stays until the end of the novel.
  • It tries to hard to convey feelings that it goes into unrealistic territory. The love that the knights and Sehyun’s friends have for him is strong, too strong that at some point, I thought everybody was in love with him. And the novel tries to explain the reasoning, but it falls into a codependency that I personally lined up with them seeing Sehyun as their God. Very heavy feelings, which bring me to the next negative.
  • Too much drama. This novel tries REALLY HARD to touch in your feelings and get you connected with the characters, for example with Agatha’s sacrifice. But once again, it tries so hard that at the end, I couldn’t care about it. I couldn’t care about Huen’s past when the are in the middle of finding the Goodness, I couldn’t care about Dohyun’s struggle with himself when doom was breathing at everybody’s neck... At some point, I genuinely believe I was starting to get bored with the dramatic antics and that’s why I couldn’t relate to their stories, because I was already exhausted of the constant “look, they have a sad past and FEELINGS and you should feel bad for them, you should connect with them” in the middle of a bigger fish to fry.
  • Inconsistencies all throughout the book. Too many to mention and I don’t want to make this review even longer lol But one that comes into my mind it’s the guides: Useless lmao Like I don’t get why they needed it to add all the previous guides from other worlds if they do absolutely nothing. Bill was more than enough, if the only role for them was to guide and give information. Because they can’t sustain the barrier and they cannot wake up the Goodness, so why... bring them all out? What was the point of that?
    [collapse]
Anywho. Good book for a quick entertainment, but I wouldn’t read it again. I think it’s one of those stories you read once and you have enough. <<less
