Loved by the general public and loathed by the critics, Duke is such a director. The blockbuster films he directed, with dazzling fast edits, never-ending blasts and fights, and 200 percent audio-visual enjoyment, always pumped the adrenaline of the audience to the limit. The critics didn’t like him.

“I work as hard as I can, and I’m glad to see everyone but the critics loved the movie. Let’s ignore the critics. I made the movie for the audience,” Duke said. This is a director who injected a dose of male hormones into men all over the world. Some love him, some hate him, but no one can ignore him.

The MC is basically Michael Bay Plus Ultra. If compared to other novels I read in other genres, I would rate it as 3.5 or a 4.0 but because there are so few decent novels with the hollywood theme, I would have to rate it 5.0 instead.

What I don't like or find disturbing:

Spoiler
    • The MC is a major playboy.
    • He has vague pe*ophilic and child grooming tendencies. I mean, he has never slept with anyone under 18 in the novel but he keeps on stealthily flirting with minors and waiting until they turn 18 and THEN sleeping with them.
    • He always looks and acts stressed with work (workaholic) or on his way or is sleeping with girls. I would have wished the MC has a more likeable or witty personality and more hobbies than just filming and being a businessman.
    • His first serious girlfriend is Ivanka Trump and involved her to one of his billion dollar business which is WTF. It is one of my major pet peeves in the novel. I have nothing against the girl, I don't know her and maybe she's really lovely but imagining having her father as a future in-law is a nightmare. Reading the start and end of their relationship is like an easily predictable trainwreck. It crashed and burned so badly that it started a lifetime family feud. That's how cringe it is.

What I like about this novel:

Spoiler
  • Even though MC is a playboy, he values consent seriously. If a woman in the novel really has no interest in him and said no then he would just back off and find other woman willing to engage with him. So no r*pey behavior with him.
  • He considers dating as a testing ground in preparation for marriage. Once he labels a girl as his girlfriend, he would not cheat or even flirt with other women. He would consider her feelings and wants seriously unless it violates his bottom line.
  • He knows how to pay back but is not emotional. He is actually very self-aware that most woman sleeps with him for benefits so he always give them the resources they need to push their career forward as long as their acting skills meet the minimum standard for the role. At the same time, when he feels that the girl is not compatible as a marriage partner with him, he makes sure to keep a clear head and emotionally keep a distance with them despite them wanting him to commit to them. That's why most of his former bed partners still maintains a good relationship with him even in the future.
  • MC is more rational than emotional. Except for family which is his number one priority, his whole life motto is that allies are temporary and interests are eternal. He can work with enemies to achieve a common goal and even become friends with them despite fighting each other a lot before. He can also ruthlessly treat his gf as an enemy if both of their family's interests are in conflict. No matter how much he loves her, he won't sacrifice his interests because its not just him who benefits or suffers but an entire network of people whose on his side.
  • MC is a dynamic person. Its not that obvious because the change in him is so subtle and gradual but he did change. Him on his 20s
has a very different mindset and priorities compared to him in his mid thirties self.

This is a quite a read if you like second chance genre (which I assumed you do).

It has a standard pace from the beginning, as there are more content, later on it devolved more on the project he worked on which can span around 12 months. You can divide the arc based on the movie project.

It solely focused on director role, the romance is there but it is not strong. The narative is good, and I really enjoyed the filming and business side of the story.

Regarding MC,

basically in the story, he Embrace his new life as american capitalist jewish completely. Doing things based on his interest. He is a focused and hardworking man, and dedicated himself in movie. A rational and calm protagonist, with a very strong objective in mind.

Romance,

Spoiler

i will say romance is a filler in here, until he is 30, he never commit into any relationship (like c'mon he is a famous director and it is hollywood with chaotic night life and he is a shareholder of victoria secret) and married at the end of story.
