EDIT: I gave this novel a 5 star rating before but let me correct this terrible mistake. The novel has become a full fledge harem novel, with shallow character development.

Now let me explain why I hate harem novels so much. The thing with them is that the characters are always made half assed, it has little to no development at all. The author has to make characters interactions and with harems, I believe is really hard to pull that off, since you have to develop many characters at the same... more>> time. Basically all harems I ever read I felt that the characters were really shallow. And I had the same issue with this novel. The more this novel distanced itself from the kingdom building theme and delved itself in 'idols' theme, and 'harem' theme, the more I hated it. If you want a really good kingdom building novel I can only recommend 'Release That Witch'. <<less

Ok look. This is a GOOD novel. But not a great one. People seem to like it because it deviates from the recent norm; not because of actual good plot/characters/setting. It doesn't deserve a five-star and really never has. The plot is good; not original, but good. There have been many commerce/economy/kingdom building novels and this one is not the best. I'd give it top 30% though. See the thing is, the MC isn't really smart (and that is his only redeeming quality is supposed to be intelligence). He feels... more>> like an average joe who got his hands on the works of some great strategists of both economy and war. He quotes them, and sort of implements them, but in reality?

He is scratching the surface of these works and only accomplishing what any high-school student would be able to provided that everything just falls into place illogically like it does for the MC (because apparently, a freaking kingdom had no one in it capable of common sense that the MC can pull out of his back pocket). The MC himself, without everyone being so vastly inferior to him in intellect, is the dull, wimpy, herbivore MC that people have claimed to be so sick of. He isn't a bad character; just overused and cliche. The same stands for the "harem" as well if it can be called that anyway. Very "look don't touch" which leads to the romance for any of the girls essentially going nowhere at all. Im not saying it is a terrible harem, but I am saying it isn't a good one. The only real redeeming feature of this novel IMO is some of the philosophy conversations that the authors uses to explore ideas. Sometimes they can be pretty interesting; as long as he is trying to form original ideas rather than just shouting out quotes he has heard before to make the MC seem smart.

In short:

Slice of life: 7/10
Characters: 5/10
Story/Plot: 6/10
Harem: 4/10
Romance: 4/10
Economics/Kingdom building: 6/10
MC: 4/10
War strategy and realistic implementation: 4/10 (wars rarely go that easy even with "flawless" strategies)
Comedy: negligible 2/10
TOTAL: 6/10

3/5 stars is even a little generous. <<less

Really nice novel with a smart MC. Different from your typical MC who is incredibly strong and kill here and there.

First of all, this novel made me stay awake until dawn. Why? The novel is very interesting and I just can't put it on hold while knowing that there's still another chapter or part available. The characters pretty much have their individuality seen, and I can tell who is who even with just their dialogue. The flow of the story is also great, when one concept is introduced, it will be used a few parts/chapters later
for example:

The Royal Army's sole battleship was used as a transport ship for the building of a port town, but then the dark elves sent a message that they are currently under a disaster so they went and save the Dark Elves village. Later on, the dark elves helped in defending the fort that was under attack by cannons, and the battle ship was used to attack a castle (on land, yes I liked this part)

The future seems promising because of the story. It also references the famous leaders in our world, honestly, this novel actually made me interested in them. As for the MC, I like him as a character. He's intelligent, he plans things, he isn't the generic harem MC nor is a generic isekai MC.

You would think that this is boring since it is about politics and economics, that's what I thought too. I was mistaken, it is precisely because of those why this novel became interesting. The author also puts in some information about what happens in the future (some in the near future, some in the far future) which helps with keeping the interest of the reader. (I especially like the idioms that were made because of the MC's actions/commands)

Those with a narrow mind that only likes novels where the MC rampages, avoid this. Others? Well keep an open mind and you will enjoy this! <<less

a really great kingdom management story, with twists of philosophy (basically how to run a country, with an in depth discussion by the author).

Don't think its applicable in real life, but its a great what if situation, and its really good.

I came to this novel because it was recommended as similar to Release that witch, however it was hugely disappointing. It may seem different from a usual JP LN initially, however it has the same tired tropes. One dimensional characters, super delicious Japanese food, harem, etc. The redeeming factor which would be the intrigue and politics is wholly unsatisfying with the MC taking Machiavelli to be some genius Messiah and trying to follow his policies to a T even when it makes no sense. My final complaint is that There... more>> is not a lick of seriousness in the novel. When meeting other people whether it be nobles or kings he always starts of with inane banter with his harem, and all the new characters do is chuckle and say "what an interesting king". I understand this is a fantasy novel with magic and whatnot but you cannot have me believe that in this world where it is stated several times that people are killed for disrespecting nobles everyone is just gonna be ok with these stupid interactions. The only reason I am giving it a 2 star and not a one star is that if you want a relaxing vapid read this is for you. It is like playing a game on sandbox mode. It will be fun for a bit, but nothing more. <<less

It's terribly overrated. It was in recommendations to RTW so I decided to give it a try. It disappointed me very fast.

MC can only be as smart as the author. But this author failed to make a smart MC so he made everyone around dumb instead.

Also characters are too simple and flat.

I lost interest during the first volume. Aside from nothing really happening, I didn't like the characters, nor the author's incompetence which was to the point that it broke immersion for me.

He overly stresses and outlines frivolous things as secrets that if it got out, it could completely destroy the country, but the things in question are what anyone would consider to be common sense. Something like demons are capable of thought... Now there is a shocker..., Or you can eat a root or an octopus... Really? I'm supposed to... more>> believe that this kingdom has existed for at least 14 generations, and no one has tried to eat an octopus they fished up? Are you making fun of me?

The (revolutionary) ideas he brings forth are so tame and basic, that it's not believable that the county wasn't able to discover them itself over the time it existed, creating a disconnect with the imersion of the world.

On top of all of this, the women seem grossly incompetent and seldom harbor thoughts that aren't about vulagrities. They spend their time mostly gossiping about s*x. I mean, it's somewhat realistic, but I read to escape reality, and I want intelligent, wholesome and comedic female characters with beautiful personalities, not repulsive and vulgar women that resemble girls you'd meet in a serrority.

And the main character is the typical unimpressive virgin MC who blushes and completely breaks down, mouth agape in awe and any attractive girl that walks by. <<less

Consider most Isekai novel are trash, this one is quite okey, so I will give it a 4/5. However, in fact, this novel is mediocre. I don't understand why most authors want their MC to be " a simple, average guy". Most reader hate reading useless MC, so what did the author of this LN do to make the MC stand out? He makes the enemy become stupid instead. All the mc's actions in this novel are praised by people around, most are simple and dump to the point that... more>> anyone can do. <<less

Stupidly stubborn naive protagonist."When the amidonia army invades, many villages has been desvasted and souma still regreting the choice he make for the rest of his life" When I finally read the words that I didn't want to read despite all these stupidly lamenting thoughts of the MC. Why don't you make him a saint then author? Work him under the church advocate for peace then.

THE MAIN PLOT LINE IS GOOD but the way the author narrates the story and the naivety thinking even a senior high school would... more>> think is too stupid to fall for such a event even though it is very obvious and can be prevented. Why giving the readers the notion that the MC is regreting the choice he make which is obvious? It is really annoying. I think there is only two problems that I didn't like in this novel and these two problems are the main cause why I dropped this novel. Many of the situational problem in the novel could be solve with ease but the author thinks "screw it logic I'm just gonna write to earn money anyways". If you want to make the MC looks smart then make him smart in every angle as*hole. <<less

Starting off pretty awkward and unrealistic in the early chapters unlike what the titular title means to, the story progresses really nicely to the way it means to, complemented by most of it's characters' development and progression without overwhelming the story of the MC itself. And then, another aspect I would also mention here is how the author able to give a nice depiction of what a modern world people with their wisdom could do in a fantasy setting without losing the sense of the fantasy theme itself or being... more>> overly imaginary.

Lastly, for the main detractors of this series, the epilogue of the volume three will give you a nice revelation for many of those awkward part of the stories you feel weird. This is not really a spoiler though but in short,

Most of them are intentional plot holes weaved nicely by the author (Though I do think that was a bit too convenient for a plot tools lol).

I sometimes think that jappanese webnovels are better than chineses webnovels. This might not have many chapters translated, but you could already see how good it is.

Like most jp novels, it has: summoning hero, harem, kingdoms and stuffs. So cliche and overused right?

This might not have the most original concept, but it is surprisingly great.

... more>> Why?

World building.

OP MC. Mentally. He uses his brain.

Harem? I hate harem.... but there are some novels with exemptions. This is one of them.

Characters are not 2D.

Its fun to read. Start reading it so we could suffer together waiting for the next chapters.

Only up to the prolouge of volume 3 is translated. And the original is not yet finish. What has been translated, although good, is only something like the prelude of the main story.

Character names sometimes change in spelling. I recommend to read the footnotes so that you dont get confuse. <<less

One word, Epic. Why? Because so far, instead of relying on op godlike cheat skills, the MC uses his brain to solve the problem. In the daily life to run the kingdom, and also to win the war. Yes there's magic there, after all, the MC was summoned uaing magic. Even so, the use of stratagems and such, makes the battle a realistic feelings.. So far, there's no one man army show, perhaps there will or perhaps there won't be one. Nonetheless, this is a good novel if you like... more>> a genius tactician MC. <<less

Some people put negative reviews because this novel has "too much politics", "no action at all", "MC is useless".

Really? No series is perfect, but they are just nitpicking the novel. The title says it all. He is just an ordinary guy who became king against his own will and they left him with a country that didn't even know how to trade and survive. If anything, the only thing that is out of ordinary of him is poltergeist and parallel thought ability, which is not really that useful in... more>> direct combat because he exposes himself to danger and he's not a natural fighter, so the only thing he can do is invest and spend his time expanding the nation.

I applaud the author for knowing his/her stuff. Machiavelli, Cesare, Sun Tzu, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, etc. I find it awesome that the MC is comparing everything he's doing with philosophy and the knowlegde from his world. It's really quite refreshing. I'm giving this a 5 star not just because of this. The side characters are also well written. They have the necessary screentime, they impact the story, they are not one dimensional (except the nobles from earlier volumes, but they were just fodder) and they are really useful to the MC. <<less

It was pretty good at during the stabilizing kingdom and first war plot. However it started to go downhill in the latest few chapters where the whole typical japanese cringe isekai stuff starts to happen.

The whole of vol 4 is just talking about how much his harem want to s*x with him, he creating his idol tv program (where he the king is the host, seriously? Wtf), with some mandatory parts of recreating his god tier delicious japanese food.

This novel is about clever process of rebuilding kingdom with real world reference book. The character is not two dimensional. The MC views the world rationally. The conflict is largely stripped of tensions but have clever twist and rational explanations. It was very refreshing to read. 5 star from me.

Great world building through 21st century technology novel.

Yukkuri translator is also extremely detailed and helpful. Lack of war and action but lots of slice of life moments and cute character interactions.

It's good. Your country management with a realist's modern insight. The MC is kinda smart too. There're some questionable plot and some at first forced plot armor, but with some acceptable afterwords tying the loose ends? Acceptable and quite awesome actually.

What can I say, this is your average japanese novel, emasculated male character, lots of girl who mainly serve as decoration (look and dont touch), very slow story with a lot of japanese like things. BUT the saving grace of this story is the concept, although probably not unique this happens to be the first time I have seen it and particularly to this extent where he changes things from the ground up, although it will probably never reach the level I hope for (scientific/military advancements such as guns) it... more>> is still interesting to read and I have enjoyed myself. Cant wait for more chapters to get translated. P.S. The translations do a really good job and have gotten even better as they release more chapters. <<less

Positive: The MC tries to act rationally and makes some actual, reasonable plans which he then completes. This makes it far more enjoyable than 'strategists' just winning for no reason at all.

* The MC's luck has reached the counter-stop. Every plan goes off perfectly, he stumbles over all potential issues early enough to avert them.

Potential disaster that may destroy the city? He just so happens to hear someone telling a story about it in a nearby tent. Disaster for the elves? He just happens to be nearby the moment it happens so he can offer relief. He removes enormous parts of the bureaucracy and the nobility on charges of treason on a no-tolerance policy? At home everyone thanks him (despite probably losing year-long friends etc. The enemies all gather in one place, but even they don't really worry me at this point. Souma even has supporters in the enemy camp after all, and for some reason the enemies work on lies that are easily dispelled.)

* Everyone important / intelligent believes him immediately. And becomes a subservient follower immediately.

He tells the King about some plans. The King abdicates and makes him the new regent. Neighbouring country's single person who keeps the country together hears about him? Decides to turn her country into a province of Souma's country. Elven princess hears what he thinks may be a potential solution to the elves' problem? She becomes his servant on the spot.

* There is a harem drawing nearer and nearer. He still resists (for unclear reasons and typical MC thickheadedness), but everyone else already accepts it. It seems forced, as everyone else is in a monogamous relationship. At least there are some actual reasons for the girls to want to marry him.

The above combine to completely remove any tension. Everything just falls into his lap, even the enemies provide no tension to me, since Souma already has a plan for them and all plans work perfectly. Or even better than perfectly because...

... there are already supporters in the enemy camp he doesn't know about. Beautiful women, of course.

Over-all it is a fun read, but it falls short of its potential by making it too easy for the protagonist. <<less
