Holy crap. This is the type of novel that keeps you on your toes even without Action/Combat. A MUST read if you like other political novels like Maoyuu Maou Yuusha and Log Horizon.

If I had one word to describe this novel that would be it.

As a novel branded as "kingdom building", being a disappointment doesn't even begin to describe how bad it was written.

... more>> Every decision or progression the main character makes is completely handwaved. The reader never gets any details on how things are implemented. It just is.

The world feels completely dead. We almost never get any perspective from other parties. The world doesn't move until the author decides it does. There are almost no foreshadowing of future events. To sum it up, everything feels artificial and doesn't feel real whatsoever.

As a novel with a "seinen" genre, I am not sure how I am supposed to just accept how poorly it is written. I honestly feels like the audience for this novel are 12 year olds. I literally have to turn my brain off to even have any amount of enjoyment from this novel.

The only good part about this novel is the cutesy romance stuff. If it was branded as just that it might've been

Anyone that is looking for any real signs of intelligent written and structure would be completely disappointed. The fact that this novel is branded as kingdom building is a completely joke.

Just to illustrate an example of this:

Spoiler

In volume 8, he fights the lizardman monsters. For some insane reason, he decided that the reason why lizardman only attacks human and not other monsters is because other monsters "taste bad". And the solution he came up with is to teach lizardman how to cook other monsters. What sort of a joke is this? Is that really the best thing the author can come up with? This was the point where I dropped the novel.

[collapse]

To anyone who is looking for an actual kingdom building novel, please go to titles like Release That Witch or even Tales of the Reincarnated Lord. This has been nothing but a disappointment. <<less

To be honest this is definitely my favorite JP novel in terms of "Kingdom Building".

The MC is not initially smart, but he was transported into a world where the literacy rate is below 30%, so as a University Student from Japan, of course he would look smart.

There are some reviews that said that MC is dumb and coward. As I said before I don't think he's that smart (i would rather say that he's knowledgeable about Art of War to some extent) but I wouldn't want to read isekai novel... more>> from a real world perspective. Of course he would look like a coward in the other world since the environment is different basically from the peaceful Japan. Well you can imagine yourself if you're a uni student and suddenly asked to be a monarch that hold basically the absolute authority in a large kindgom. Personally I would say the MC did a very good job on this, despite everything else.

Beside that, I think I really love this series because:

  1. The MC is indeed a 'realist'. If you read enough WN / LN you'll see MCs saying things like "I will protect everyone else but I don't want to kill anyone" type of bullsh*t. In this novel you won't see any bulls*it like that. I won't spoiler anything so look forward to it.
  2. The Harem of MC is also realistic. It's not like he will go marry every cute girls he met, at times he is also willing to refuse girls that he don't really love. And the way they fell in love in each other seems quite natural to me (at least there are logic behind it, not pure feelings).
  3. While it can be said that sometimes there are change of personality in MC, he stays true to his ideals. I think it's good enough that you won't lose sight what's important.
I really recommend people that love this sort of stories (you can find out from the tags) to try out reading this, at least the first 4 volumes (since it's basically the first arc). <<less

I gave it a 5 star.

The story is great, the MC is average, he didn't come in and suddenly went "Oh, let's make a bomb that will destroy my enemy"

The MC isn't "Oh me strong, I kill everybody, you loyal to me or I kill you too"

The MC is just your typical man with Knowledge here and there. He understand some things, and he has his own common sense he gained by growing up. He's not a pre-teen that can be dyed black if the country he got summoned in... more>> decided to dye him black.

The MC will act to his own standard, Although it's been 2 months since the last update, but up to here v4c1 8/16/2017. The story went well, the MC created progress, real progress. Not like in some other novels "Oh me MC, I give you potato, you eat potato, everybody eat potato, food problem solved."

He's not overpowered, he's not overly knowledgeable that you wonder how the f*ck a xx year old know all that shit.

He's your average guy, in an unexpected position.

It's story about management, Kingdom building, Domestic affairs. It's about that. If you want to read something where the MC can destroy a country by himself or somehow a potato solves the hunger issues, then this novel is not for you. <<less

After reading the synapse (and now 2 chaps, because my idiotic friend tricked me into) , my best guess on how to enjoy this LN is by taking your brain out your skull (somehow without dying), then step on it and then throw some horse wastes at it just leave it there for eternity.

I haven't read this novel, thus I cannot judge it fairly (I have now but still won't rate it because... well, 2 chaps, it seems kinda hard to judge after 2 chaps without sounding like a... more>> snob, cuz the story hasn't established itself). This is why I will refrain myself from grading this novel (I am not a troll, at least that much of a troll in this regard), but also leave a piece of commentary regarding the synapses.

I planned on reading this novel since it is currently regarded 5th best novel of all time in this website, however after reading the description I can only think that several crucial details were omitted.

First of all, I am amazed by the cheer number of ludicrous points in the summary. Why would a king ever relinquish his duties to a complete stranger? Not only that, but this stranger is a child (ok, he is not a child but he really kinda... is) of unknown origins, but not only does he not know the history and political stability of the kingdom he finds himself in.

Second, there would be an outcry from almost anyone residing in the country from this absurd resolution, that would probably bring the downfall of the entire kingdom (I would complain more but he is almost seen as the MESSIAH or something but hesus, he is not).

Third and final point, how would a child have the necessary knowledge to know how to create a country. Even with the help of the best people in the kingdom he resides in, he would undoubtedly fail. This is lunacy at best, most of us have the general idea how some objects may work but it doesn't mean we can easily recreate them. Countries take an extreme amount of time to implement a single game changing policy. let alone those big policies we already have problems with smaller ones, and are often met with extreme difficulty to pass. Thus for a child who finds himself in an alternate reality closer to the middle ages of our world, and somehow becomes monarch just because he appears to have interesting ideas, it is simply ludicrous. Any contrived explanation, such as him looking like the dead prince that wasn't officially reported dead, would have been more plausible than the one given in the summary.

This summary, took away any chance of me believing that there would be any serious attempt of good story telling. I felt myself not only getting dumber by reading each line, but as well questioning the author's sanity in writing such as story. I may be wrong about the book overall, however if the description I got is the closest to summarizing the book's story, I would beg to differ. <<less

I had huge doubts but this was written very cleverly. Out of all the "Transmigration Novels" this is one of the best ones I've read. Because the MC actually does things right and uses his previous life knowledge really well. He is a kind person but not a kind king.

I like the romance. Lichia and MC make the funniest comedy duo. They are like an idiot couple together and have very cute moments. That's why the Polygamy Harem ruins it for me. You can easily predict who will fall in... more>> love with him. Its just a disappointment since there's so much to work with.

Spoiler

For example, the s*upid muscle airhead girl who acts like a warrior or samurai. How many times have we seen this in Manga\Anime? I admit she's hilarious but not Heroine material.. You can tell he will get the girls like Demon King, Princess, Noble dragon girl.. Its just turning to a seeking harem now where you conquer countries by girls.. I rather see more blood and focusing on mind game strategies. So can't blame me for hating Harem on this right? Plus it takes away more time from Lichia. She does get annoying at times though... Despite being a Princess she cries almost for everything.. I wish she was more merciless and cold. But its like she refuses to see reality for what it is and does not want to kill traitors. I've read part of the LN that's online and its a lot clearer then WN. So I can't really give my real thoughts about this since WN is only translating..

I really wish it wasn't a harem though.. <<less

Synopsis: Lazy (?), unambitious university student is summoned to a fantasy world to be a hero for a country with various internal and external troubles. MC is made into the king, and uses some very unorthodox fantasy skills and his modern knowledge to try and solves these problems.

Genre/Features: Heavy on nation management/building. Uses some historical examples and quotes. A lot of dialogue, beginnings of a harem and small amount of romance so far. Has demi-humans, small amount of magic technology and combat. Large group, army movements and strategy. Has very... more>> little personal combat. Magic use outside of these combat scenes is minimal, mostly limited to tools and daily life. MC is not OP, although has a few unique skills upon arrival to new world. Typical RPG/fantasy world, but doesn't seem to be heavy on RPG system or events, other than the names of skills and magic. More like modern knowledge meets fantasy world. Or like MC begins an early Renaissance for this world. Translation: 5/5. Translator also includes many footnotes for those interested in Japanese words or historical info.

[[5/5 = Minor spelling and grammar errors. 4/5 = occasional serious grammar errors, may need to reread sentences, but no loss of meaning. 3/5 = common serious grammar errors, some loss of meaning, but no loss of overall story. 2/5 = difficult to read, difficulty understanding parts of scenes. 1/5 entire scenes unreadable.]]

Issues: Once in a while, it can get preachy about politics and philosophy. Historical quotes comes mostly from Machiavelli, Sun Tsu, and Romance of the 3 Kingdoms. These are common, but usually only up to a few sentences. Can skim over the longer ones without missing out on the meaning or action of the chapter. Some chapters can be cheesy or uninteresting to some readers, like a cooking or American Idol chapter. The "real world" problems that MC tries to solve and his solutions are a bit simplified. Hard to believe a university student would know so much about urban planning, politics, history, etc, and apply them in real situations right away; but this is a fantasy story.

Recommendation: 4 stars. Written well, interesting characters although some aren't well developed. Interesting scenarios and problems/solutions. Fans of nation building will probably enjoy this. However, some people who are not fans may find the rest (harem, romance, large scale battle, limited personal fighting) not enough to keep reading. Even if it's not the most interesting read, the author's writing and the translation are very smooth. Minus half star for occasional preachiness and cheesiness. Minus half star because may appeal to just a limited audience. IMPORTANT: NEED TO BE OK WITH HEAVY EMPHASIS ON NATION BUILDING AND LIMITED ON TYPICAL FANTASY STUFF.

[[5 star means most readers will enjoy, the rest will probably not think it a waste of time. 4 star means majority of readers will enjoy, but the rest will be hit or miss whether they thought it was worth their time. 3 star means hit or miss on whether a reader will enjoy, hit or miss for whether anyone thought was worth their time. 2 star means a niche audience might enjoy, the rest will probably find it not worth the time. 1 star means even the niche audience may not enjoy.]]

Other: The English license of the LN has been picked up by an online publisher. They are now starting on LN v1. The primary independent translator paused for a few weeks during December 2016, but has posted that he has contacted the publisher and he will likely continue translating this WN at least through v4. <<less

A good kingdom building novel with tons of references to both real world history with examples from the asian eras like the Sengoku Era and Romance of the Three Kingdom, with a sprinkling of ideas from Machiavellianism and Sun Tzu. Pace is fairly slow, but the worldbuilding is decent and there is an actual story. Unfortunately, there is a novel out there that does everything this novel does, except better - Release the Witch. The main cons in this novel are the characters - they are pidgeonholed into typical japanese... more>> stereotypes which severely cripples the character development, leaving several characters feeling artificial. There's basically times where characters act unnaturally just so they would stay true to the character stereotypes. Another con is that the author simply assumes that a medieval world with magic will react exactly like the modern japanese society to everything that happens which leads to a lot of deus ex machinae situations where the MC can perfectly predict the reaction to a policy every single time, and will never fail (so far). The only exceptions to this is when the author decides that Machiavellianism should apply (it's completely random), which leads to a world that feels very plastic and out of place.

Edit: The one dimensionalness of characters is getting worse and worse while the nation building and applying modern knowledge seems to have been put in the back burner in favor of modern politics. Going down from 4 to 3 stars. <<less

One of the best novels that I've read. The girls in the harem aren't like bumbling idiots who wants to f*ck the MC but they have various personalities that won't irritate the readers because of their idiotic acts and the romance between the MC and female lead is well written nothing feels for there a good pacing in the development. One of the best world building/kingdom building novel.
Even though this is a transported to another world series the MC isn't an idiot and has a pragmatic way of thinking... more>> unlike the other MC's of other series that you can already guess what he/she will do or act.

Not much action but worth the read. <<less

EDIT: I gave this novel a 5 star rating before but let me correct this terrible mistake. The novel has become a full fledge harem novel, with shallow character development.

Now let me explain why I hate harem novels so much. The thing with them is that the characters are always made half assed, it has little to no development at all. The author has to make characters interactions and with harems, I believe is really hard to pull that off, since you have to develop many characters at the same... more>> time. Basically all harems I ever read I felt that the characters were really shallow. And I had the same issue with this novel. The more this novel distanced itself from the kingdom building theme and delved itself in 'idols' theme, and 'harem' theme, the more I hated it. If you want a really good kingdom building novel I can only recommend 'Release That Witch'. <<less

Ok look. This is a GOOD novel. But not a great one. People seem to like it because it deviates from the recent norm; not because of actual good plot/characters/setting. It doesn't deserve a five-star and really never has. The plot is good; not original, but good. There have been many commerce/economy/kingdom building novels and this one is not the best. I'd give it top 30% though. See the thing is, the MC isn't really smart (and that is his only redeeming quality is supposed to be intelligence). He feels... more>> like an average joe who got his hands on the works of some great strategists of both economy and war. He quotes them, and sort of implements them, but in reality?

He is scratching the surface of these works and only accomplishing what any high-school student would be able to provided that everything just falls into place illogically like it does for the MC (because apparently, a freaking kingdom had no one in it capable of common sense that the MC can pull out of his back pocket). The MC himself, without everyone being so vastly inferior to him in intellect, is the dull, wimpy, herbivore MC that people have claimed to be so sick of. He isn't a bad character; just overused and cliche. The same stands for the "harem" as well if it can be called that anyway. Very "look don't touch" which leads to the romance for any of the girls essentially going nowhere at all. Im not saying it is a terrible harem, but I am saying it isn't a good one. The only real redeeming feature of this novel IMO is some of the philosophy conversations that the authors uses to explore ideas. Sometimes they can be pretty interesting; as long as he is trying to form original ideas rather than just shouting out quotes he has heard before to make the MC seem smart.

In short:

Slice of life: 7/10
Characters: 5/10
Story/Plot: 6/10
Harem: 4/10
Romance: 4/10
Economics/Kingdom building: 6/10
MC: 4/10
War strategy and realistic implementation: 4/10 (wars rarely go that easy even with "flawless" strategies)
Comedy: negligible 2/10
TOTAL: 6/10

3/5 stars is even a little generous. <<less

First of all, this novel made me stay awake until dawn. Why? The novel is very interesting and I just can't put it on hold while knowing that there's still another chapter or part available. The characters pretty much have their individuality seen, and I can tell who is who even with just their dialogue. The flow of the story is also great, when one concept is introduced, it will be used a few parts/chapters later
for example:

Spoiler

The Royal Army's sole battleship was used as a transport ship for the building of a port town, but then the dark elves sent a message that they are currently under a disaster so they went and save the Dark Elves village. Later on, the dark elves helped in defending the fort that was under attack by cannons, and the battle ship was used to attack a castle (on land, yes I liked this part)

[collapse]

The future seems promising because of the story. It also references the famous leaders in our world, honestly, this novel actually made me interested in them. As for the MC, I like him as a character. He's intelligent, he plans things, he isn't the generic harem MC nor is a generic isekai MC.

You would think that this is boring since it is about politics and economics, that's what I thought too. I was mistaken, it is precisely because of those why this novel became interesting. The author also puts in some information about what happens in the future (some in the near future, some in the far future) which helps with keeping the interest of the reader. (I especially like the idioms that were made because of the MC's actions/commands)

Those with a narrow mind that only likes novels where the MC rampages, avoid this. Others? Well keep an open mind and you will enjoy this! <<less

Should be called "How an Optimist Rebuilt the Kingdom." Do yourself a favor and read "A Genius Prince's Guide" instead.

MC here is is close to borderline generic Japanese MC. He's idealistic, forgives enemies his should be wary about, and things just work out. Examples at the end. Overall, this story has bits of political scheming and military strategy, but only enough to make you unsatisfied at its quality. More characters get added on, but it becomes a pain to remember all the side characters and their positions and that also... more>> means the story gives less time for the development of the main characters. For instance, the MC was supposed to be training with the strongest warrior in the kingdom, but that really never goes anywhere. It's just kinda forgotten. The only real strong point of this series is the implementation of our worlds discoveries and that his relationship with his harem actually goes somewhere. However, I find that I start caring less about his tv show ideas as the story progresses. If this series was only slice of life, it's be a lot less disappointing.

Spoiler

When a prince of a formerly hostile nation sends him a message asking for assistance, he straight up trusts him just because how he wrote his letter didn't match with his past behavior. One would consider if this is a trap sought for revenge but he just thinks the prince changed for the better. Also, there's pretty much another version of Genghis Khan who has shown ambition in conquering the surrounding regions but the MC does nothing about it. For an MC who was a history nerd, you'd think he'd try to stop him before he gets really powerful, but nope. Also, there was this time when he visited a foreign nation and his entire security detail and himself got drunk. That was probably the most infuriating out of character moments that I've read for him and all the others.

Some people put negative reviews because this novel has "too much politics", "no action at all", "MC is useless".

Really? No series is perfect, but they are just nitpicking the novel. The title says it all. He is just an ordinary guy who became king against his own will and they left him with a country that didn't even know how to trade and survive. If anything, the only thing that is out of ordinary of him is poltergeist and parallel thought ability, which is not really that useful in... more>> direct combat because he exposes himself to danger and he's not a natural fighter, so the only thing he can do is invest and spend his time expanding the nation.

I applaud the author for knowing his/her stuff. Machiavelli, Cesare, Sun Tzu, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, etc. I find it awesome that the MC is comparing everything he's doing with philosophy and the knowlegde from his world. It's really quite refreshing. I'm giving this a 5 star not just because of this. The side characters are also well written. They have the necessary screentime, they impact the story, they are not one dimensional (except the nobles from earlier volumes, but they were just fodder) and they are really useful to the MC. <<less

Consider most Isekai novel are tr*sh, this one is quite okey, so I will give it a 4/5. However, in fact, this novel is mediocre. Starting off pretty awkward and unrealistic in the early chapters unlike what the titular title means to, the story progresses really nicely to the way it means to, complemented by most of it's characters' development and progression without overwhelming the story of the MC itself. And then, another aspect I would also mention here is how the author able to give a nice depiction of what a modern world people with their wisdom could do in a fantasy setting without losing the sense of the fantasy theme itself or being... more>> overly imaginary.

Lastly, for the main detractors of this series, the epilogue of the volume three will give you a nice revelation for many of those awkward part of the stories you feel weird. This is not really a spoiler though but in short,

I sometimes think that jappanese webnovels are better than chineses webnovels. This might not have many chapters translated, but you could already see how good it is.

Like most jp novels, it has: summoning hero, harem, kingdoms and stuffs. So cliche and overused right?

This might not have the most original concept, but it is surprisingly great.

... more>> Why?

World building.

OP MC. Mentally. He uses his brain.

Harem? I hate harem.... but there are some novels with exemptions. This is one of them.

Characters are not 2D.

Its fun to read. Start reading it so we could suffer together waiting for the next chapters.

Downsides:

Only up to the prolouge of volume 3 is translated. And the original is not yet finish. What has been translated, although good, is only something like the prelude of the main story.

Character names sometimes change in spelling. I recommend to read the footnotes so that you dont get confuse. <<less
