Forced to Marry a Memorial Tablet

Liandan’s husband had died before he even married into the Chen family.

What he married was a memorial tablet.

Liandan was forced to sleep every night holding that cold memorial tablet. After a long time, his warm body even made the tablet turn warm.

***

At the east end of Kaoshan Village, there was a temple, very effective for praying for children.

The Chen family’s old woman wanted Liandan to give her a grandson, so she sent him to stay at that monk temple for a few days to pray for blessings.

When Liandan went to burn incense in the temple, he overheard the head monk telling the old woman that his dead husband could return at night to consummate the marriage with him.

He was scared to death and naturally did not want to go.

But the old woman beat him half to death. Asking his parents for help did not work either.

Liandan had no one to rely on, so he had no choice but to go.

On the night he moved into the temple, in complete darkness, Liandan’s face turned pale when he saw the door that had been locked push open. A white shadow floated in front of him, the smell of blood and rot rushing toward him.

Liandan’s eyes filled with tears from fear. His lips trembled open but no sound came out. He only mouthed the words: “Husband.”

The white shadow lowered its head and looked at him for a while. Fingers cold like dried bones touched Liandan’s fragile neck and tore open his clothes.

That night, Liandan clenched his teeth and endured it.

A month later, Liandan was indeed pregnant.

The old woman of the Chen family was overjoyed. She treated him especially well, no longer beat or scolded him, and even made him good food.

But Liandan himself was not happy at all. Instead, he was fearful all day and anxious.

Only he knew that his husband had already turned into a vicious ghost.

That night, the temple had been full of blood and severed limbs, like hell itself.

The monks had been slaughtered like livestock, none left alive.

After he gave birth to a big fat grandson, the old woman of the Chen family was overjoyed. When she went out to show off, she tripped on the threshold and fell, bedridden and unable to get up.

A doctor passing through the village came to take a look and prescribed some medicine.

Liandan asked when his mother-in-law would get better. That young doctor, who had a delicate face but a tall build, stared at him with eagle-like eyes for a long time. After Liandan started to feel uneasy, the doctor shifted his gaze to the baby in Liandan’s arms, stared with unusual focus, and spoke coldly and slowly: “She will not get better.”

The next day, the old woman’s son came back to life and returned home.

From the beggining, Liandan’s life was never supposed to be easy. Born a ge’er to a poor family and a good for nothing father, he was sold to the neighboring village and became a ghost bride. The ghost marriage in itself is already iffy but to top it off, his mother in law is the worst. She uses him as a servant, hits him and finally, decides she wants a grandson so she sends him to a monastery famous in the region for fulfilling the wishes of family who want... more>> children.

In reality, the children aren’t a gift from Budda but fruit of r*pe from the “monks”. But before Liandan was put in that position, his “husband” saved him.

I really like how, with all the wuxia stuff, the characters are so realistic in their relationship progress. It all begins with lies and half-truths, so when it all starts crumbling, Liandan has to start building his trust all over again. But he does so and finds not only love but a good family, friends and a home. <<less

It's actually refreshing to read a different type of 'ger' story that's not super predictable like the other 'slice of life ger' novel.

While I was reading I couldn't predict what's going to happen next, so if you are looking for something new give it a try!

EDIT: a moment of silence for me, , im seeing the cultivation tag after posting this review (I started this novel without reading the tags....)

if only I saw it sooner I wouldn't have to struggle this much to decide whether the ML is... more>> a ghost or not 😭😭

well, , I couldn't predict what's going to happen next maybe because I didn't read the tags😭 but it indeed made the whole reading experience mysterious <<less

Ok, this story truly surprised me.

I thought it would be the same old Chinese plot BUT it has a lot of mystery and plotwists!! And the last third of the story... OMG!!!!!! 😱

Everything on the synopsis happens on the first 10 chapters so you can imagine this story have a much heavier plot that it seems. Just go for it!!

What I love mist about this novel is — MC’s character development.

He started off as a weak scaredy cat who self blamed, never fought those who bullied him, just accepting the bitterness of life (can’t blame him, that’s the life he grew up with)

So his character development really surprised me near-end of the novel.

... more>> He started learning more about his feelings, how he deserves to be treated well, to be stubborn in fighting for what he wants and gaining confidence himself.

So it’s quite an enjoyable read, the first half was full of mystery so I kept reading.

ML was initially the typical cold ML. But I love how his character showed near-end how he can be a coward as well, how we can be irritable, irrational (he was sick this time) and it made me like him more because I just felt meh about him initially

1 thing tho is that — aside from being mysterious, this novel has a gloomy undertone for me. Although it is HE

This is the first time I read a summary that tells the story exactly like it is, dialogue and all. Usually danmei summaries are so misleading.

But WOW, I did not see the plot twist coming.

So the ghost husband was never a ghost, and was never his 'husband' after all. He just happened to save the MC, and impersonated the husband to be able to stay close to the MC so he could continue saving the MC's life... at the expense of his own!

I really like this ML a lot. He had no obligation to help the MC but he pushed aside his own discomfort to pretend to be the husband he needs, and risked his life to save the MC from the poison.

[collapse]

I don't like the MC nearly as much. I usually prefer MCs that can carry the plot instead of be carried by it, and his reaction to

Spoiler

the ML's deception was also frustrating because WHY exactly, does he feel so betrayed to the point of wanting to chase him out? What did the dead husband do for the MC, anyway? Exactly. Nothing. The ML isn't the man he married, but he's the man that STEPPED UP. I understood the MC being angry that he was lied to, and he was an ab*se victim that had been brainwashed to be subservient to his spouse and in-laws, but his loyalty to the memorial tablet over the ML and being so hung up on the ML lying about his identity threw me off a little. Especially because he didn't seem at all angry by Xue Ming also having deceived him. I love Tang Hua for trying to talk sense into him in chapter 29.

I only continued reading pass that point to see the MC's character development. And let me tell you, I only warmed up to the MC again after the separation and reunion. He was FINALLY brave enough to face his feelings and actually fight for the ML for a change.

It is not perfect, but it is such a refreshing and unique story that it has left a mark on my heart! I feel such tenderness towards the characters, and they moved me throughout the whole story. It is quite short, so of course I wish some things were more detailed, but it also feels right.

The story provided me with something I always wondered about, the kind of quotidian side line of the romance of the lead of an action-packed story. We get a slice of life story that does... more>> not follow the martial arts intrigue, but rather the one directly affected by the actions of those involved. It is such a unique and well-written story. It has a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere, almost like a gothic love story. So endearing and wonderful. I am grateful to the translator for such a beautiful piece of work as well. <<less

This story takes some grit. You go in knowing exactly who to hate and who not to hate, but then the ML (male lead) gets involved and confuses the sh*t out of the matter. I went to sleep at night trying to untangle what the heck was going on, and it's because I completely forgot that this was a martial arts/cultivation novel. I mean, I knew, but how things worked wasn't deeply explained and a lot was left in mystery for a while (plus, I don't read cultivation novels as... more>> often so I sort of rely on those in-story explanations). Remembering that and figuring things out along the way opened so many doors and I think the author may have intended you to forget about it just a little. The MC (main character) lives in such a small, secluded village out in the boonies that he doesn't even know what martial arts is, let alone that cultivation exists at all. It was all very cryptic until it suddenly wasn't.

Moving on, if I have one complaint, it's the MC's capacity to keep his mouth shut when it matters and drag things out. I did start to get a bit exasperated from time to time. I just wanted them to act like adults and have a calm, rational conversation. Seriously started to drive me nuts.

As for the good points, there is some major character development in this. Both for the MC and ML, and a little bit for the side characters (a very little bit). It's told from the ger's (bottom, or male who can get pregnant) point of view and he's just as confused as you are half the time. He goes from being a victim of serious physical and psychological ab*se, to getting the slightest backbone, to being forced to stand strong and push people to do what needs doing, to becoming an actual adult who can speak his mind and move with (still somewhat timid but in a humble and quiet rather than scared way) confidence. It is a very drastic change and is built up slowly over time beautifully. MC is a masterpiece. ML has a more, "I fixed my problems and fell in love so now I'm not an angry robot hell-bent on revenge", sort of growth. He goes from sticking around to repay a debt and fix what he sees as his mistakes and fault, to learning to love being a father, to falling in love with his husband, to damning himself to protect his husband, to being told off and learning how to be partners. A lot of his more obvious character development happens later in the story, and for good reason (there's not a good way of explaining why without a spoiler, so read that bit at your own discretion).

Spoiler

ML was in constant, unrelenting agony for most of the book, feeling the pain of his insides rotting and seeing his flesh and face turn ghoulish due to poison ("Fallout 4" ghoulish, no joke, but don't worry, he gets his beauty back eventually). Without knowing these details, he comes off as a short-tempered robotic as*hole and the poison seems like something that affects his emotions more than his physical body. This isn't revealed until later and suddenly everything makes sense. He was in so much pain that functioning as a human being came second and taking revenge so he could just f*cking die already came first. Then the love of his life comes into the picture and now he's trying to make it so his death doesn't hurt the ML, because, I'm sorry, but being in love doesn't suddenly take away the agony of basically being a walking rotting corpse and he still wants to just f*cking die already. So, yeah, he comes off as an a**hole, but it's all he's got left at this point and there's a time limit so he becomes a blunt man with a death wish.

[collapse]

The world building is acceptable/adequate/better than some things I've read before. The small parts of the world that this takes place in aren't super detailed, but are detailed enough that you can fill in the gaps automatically without much thought and don't get bored hearing about how every nook and cranny of the village was set up or something. It's a nice balance in my opinion, though some more depth could have been added to the interworkings of the martial arts world and the set up of a few places.

The plot is riveting and well written. It was very well thought out and I'm happy with the end result (and that I stuck around to see it even though ML came off as pretty a**hole-ish at first -see above spoiler for details-). It's not a story I've read before. Sure, it does follow some known algorithms (as do all books), but I was left guessing more often than I was able to accurately predict the future until it got closer to the end, then routes were limited and the future became clear.

The writing and translation are absolutely phenomenal as of 9/24/2025, but who knows what might happen in the future (I have been burned by websites and/or stories taken down before). I have no complaints on the writing/translation front whatsoever.

All in all, this story definitely deserves 5 stars. Also, as of today, all the reviews are 5 stars so I have no reviews to refute as far as I know, yay!

Spoiler

One side note: There is "technically" r*pe in this. It's more dubious consent and one party being asleep and unaware half the time, than anything else. It involves the trope about poison that'll kill you if you don't do the deed. ML saves MC's life, but it can still technically be called r*pe. Nothing explicit though, should be readable for the more delicate readers.

I love this! I had read it in one sitting. It's very different from other plots. I thought it was horror or something but nah the author really just want to scare us for a bit.

The part where the ML got sick left me sobbing so hard it's so heartbreaking to see your love one suffering from an illness that you don't know if there's a cure for. It really touched my hard. I'm glad they got their happy ending and was able to tie the loose ends completely. Definitely... more>> one of the best novel I have ever read <<less

Actually liked it!

Cried a couple of times. ML is 18 and MC is probably 15/16-ish, when they first met. MC was also heavily ab*sed, so even though his choices are exasperating for some, I can give leeway because he really is just a child with trauma.

MCs mental strength is commendable af! I'd probably have gone insane with all the batsh*t crazy that happens around ML.

Was spooked a couple of times, thought this was horror, forgot to check tags, cause my filter was 'farming' stories. This is not, in fact, farming... more>> lol.

Let me say,

I'm a huge fan of these types of stories so this was an amazing read for me!

I love male pregnancy and how it was written in this novel was smooth and apart of the normal environment.

... more>> I gave this novel 4/5 stars because of how quickly we glossed over the left and right protector arc/cultivation background.

I don't know if the author wasn't comfortable going deeper into that storyline but I lowkey wanted more information on that!

Still, the relationship between the MC and ML was something I loved. They didn't start off loving each other but by the end I was sitting on the couch screaming about how that type of romance is hard to find nowadays 🤣!

Give it a read if you have a chance! I'm sure you can find some enjoyment out of the story! <<less

Author if you are reading this, you got to make story for ML side like his childhood then married life and revenage and pain. I believe it would really be on top chart. Like ML is not overpowered and villian are not s*upid, there evil but they genuinely feel fear inducing character. I mean just think about, story about children get raised by villian sect where everyone is really evil, MC is strong but troublesome so he get punish, it would be perfect revenge story with perfect happy ending.

They suddenly made MC a manager of their shop in the last chapter and he couldn’t even speak properly before...... LMAO.... It was out of nowhere and felt abrupt and few other small details like that I find them irritating as they felt hasty. Still not a bad read as It's a short story.

The story is about a ger who marries a ghost husband. He grew up in a poor and abusive family. Then he gets married off and and his MIL ab*ses him too. Because of his upbringing he’s quite weak and scared. But because of the ML you’ll see him grow into a strong person. His growth comes gradually which makes it realistic. Our MC is not an OP genius. He is a kind soul who learns to become stronger.

The ML stole my heart. He is a green flag.... more>> He treasures the MC. Too bad that the author solely focused on the MC. ML’s backstory is really interesting. I think his story would make the story more exciting. <<less
