As an alluring beauty, the Ninth Prince Qi Changyi inherited his mother’s looks, but was unfortunately a bit s*upid. Not only did he live in fear, even within palace walls, but he also merely lived as a substitute in his beloved’s eyes. Then, while being used and tormented, his delicate, pure heart finally burned to ashes.

Pei Zheng was the Prime Minister of the Imperial Court, a man of great status; he gained it all through the most ruthless methods. He was known for his cruel nature, but gradually, he became close to the unfavored ninth prince.

“Your Highness, just now, at court, who were you looking at? Huh?” Pei Zheng squeezed the small man’s delicate little chin.

Qi Changyi’s eyes were misty with tears of pain, “I, I wasn’t.”

“Stop trying to seduce others.” Pei Zheng’s voice was frigid. “Otherwise, I’ll make sure that General Zhao, for whom you pine, dies on the battlefield!”

He thought he had a firm grip on this little fool, but he could’ve never imagined that one day, this little fool would leave his side carrying a broken heart.

“Brother Pei, I’m leaving now, you should be happy.”

With scarlet eyes and a heart burning with obsession, he searched everywhere, but found no trace of him.

“I won’t, without you, I’ll never be happy again. Your Highness, where should I go, how can I bring you home?”

Dropped.

The ML is just too much. MC is too much of a pushover and no one actively tries to help him except for his childhood friend ... more>>
Spoiler

which eventually got spoiled by the ML

[collapse]
. Even the doctor, though I know he has good intentions.

I felt like MC existed JUST to be pitied on and I dislike those kinds of characters the most. I know he is mentally weak but still the amount of bullsh*t he had to go through to set up the wife-chasing/face-slapping was just too much.

I sometimes I really wish his life would've been better if he really got married to [Redacted/Spoiler]. But ML just happened to destroy every single chance of happiness for MC. <<less

EDIT: I hate this story but if you're going to promote websites for the manhua don't go to Mangafox go to sleepytranslations. Com or mangadex. Org. Thanks for translating the novel Merchie.

I read the MTL of this the author does a good job explaining why a lot of MCs are so dumb.
Spoiler

MC hit his head as a child and then becomes mentally impaired. All to save ML which he finds out later and feels guilty about it, along with all the horrible torture he inflicts on MC. So there you have it, all the low IQ MC were dropped on the head as a child.

[collapse]

Everything everyone in this story does is questionable. The ML likes MC but hurts him then later knows to treat him nice? MC loyal servant suddenly goes oh I just want him to be happy?
Spoiler

MC develops amnesia which later ML can exploit and treat him nice since MC can't avoid him.

[collapse]

The emperor on how he shows his love to MC idk why he isn't mad at ML if he likes MC so much. The loyal servant becomes ML's butler, wow nice cushy job there! The imperial doctor also acts like he's doing things in benefit of MC, but do they ask the person in question? NO
Spoiler

They really drag out the amnesia and the ghost doctor aka MC's aunt takes a really long time to develop and GIVE the MC the cure, even though she got a lot of hints about the sus relationship.

[collapse]

TLDR Amnesia plot, another horribly done chasing wife to crematorium where I didn't feel satisfied with how ML was forgiven, everyone has low IQ, MPreg which is used as another leverage point for ML to be forgiven which just disgusts me.

A lot of things in this story felt unnecessary. I feel tricked from the manhua summary into reading this.

EDIT: I'm adding a star for the translator's efforts. One more star cuz of reviewers promoting mangafox

Alert!!! THIS IS A MASOCHISTIC NOVEL. ML is a yandere. Avoid if you are not into suffering MCs. #Wife chasing crematorium at half of story.

My jaws are in pain, clenched from annoyance as I read how the MC was ab*sed chapter by chapter by just anyone and everyone. I do revel on those small amounts of sugar in-between the angst. But it's funny how the ML kept saving the MC from ab*se but also makes the MC suffer himself. I can't blame the cast anymore at this point. What the hell is the author thinking???? The story is quite bumpy as it has a lot of time jumps and makes the reader fill up the blank lines. Author employs excessive bleeding, (fake) death and gong cruelty in order to... more>> reinforce the drama w/c IMO made the reasoning behind all the more weaker.

Like look. I love dog blood novels. It's frustrating but entertaining at the same time. But I find this novel barely readable because MC's suffering are shallow and unreasonable. (Especially the 2nd arc!) So the drama ain't really cutting it for me. I just wish the bad blood between the MC and MLs family had a foreshadowing earlier so to make more sense and make the drama less s*upid. To be fair, the third arc/half of the novel ML realized his sh*t and started the wife-chasing made it tolerable.

I will rate 3* because the latter part got better plus the author is considerate enough to follow-up and conclude sub-plot lines and the minor couples. I was still able to finish it till the end after all. If you shut off your brain it's a passable dog blood read. <<less

I finished this novel and I really liked it when seeing it as a whole. If you have a good tolerance to angst stories with happy endings, then I totally recommend this one.

I mention it because this novel is not for the lighthearted in the beginning arcs. The toxic phase of their relationship was hard to read at times, but even through the toxic phase, one could see hints that the ML was developing feelings for the MC so that does make you have some hope and expectations for their... more>> relationship to become sweet at some point. The novel felt easy to binge read in this sense, wanting to get to the cute parts.

And I'm glad that I persisted because I wasn't disappointed, I loved that the author dedicated a lot of chapters on the redemption arcs of the story (like more than half of the novel).

It often happens on these kind of stories that the redemption feels forced or rushed or not sincere enough coming from the ML but this novel did take their time on making the ML learn his lessons and try his best to get closer and work for the love of the MC, so it felt satisfying. In fact all the stars I am giving is because of the redemption arcs, which basically saved the story (also the translation deserves stars too, it's so good).

The thing I loved the most is that I wanted to see the ML sincerely repent and throughly value the MC's love and happiness and I did get to see that, more than I expected.

Also I loved having character development going on not only for the ML but also the MC. I have seen some reviewers criticizing him saying he is childish and weak etc, but the novel clearly explained that he has slow mental capabilities since he was young and gave the reasons why too, so why think badly about him? He was doing his best, he suffered a lot and by the end I was very proud and happy for the MC, because he grew so much throughout the novel. Aside that, the other side couples were woven nicely into the story too and they had entertaining moments. P.S. There is a manhua adaptation about this novel too with some changes on the story to make it more suitable to audiences and the art is gorgeous. You can check it out translated in bilibili comics or manhuahot. Com

Also, I'm surprised there are reviews here that are from people who didn't complete the novel, so their rating can't reflect accurately what the novel is about. If the reviewers had finished it, their rating for sure would be higher.

And some reviews here have misleading information too, mentioning things that didn't even happen. For example:

* (Spoiler) *

someone saying that the MC's childhood friend was the only one helping the MC? When actually, this childhood friend always placed his job and reputation before the MC.

* (Spoiler) *

Or saying that the MC's only chance of happiness was with this childhood friend, when clearly the MC had a very happy ending with the ML*

(Spoiler) *also another one said the Mpreg was used as leverage to forgive the ML, which also didn't happen. The ML never used the pregnancy for any gain, the first time he didn't even know the MC was pregnant and even the MC's overprotective aunt was planning to abort the child without any of them knowing, she only changed her mind because she saw the love between the MC and the ML. And the second time, they were already a couple and had a wish about it* <<less

A novel with your typical possessive gong and crybaby shou. It has a decent plot with decent villain characters but doesn't really introduce you to something new. Nothing groundbreaking. Nothing we have never seen in any other novel before.

It's just your average historical novel with cute elements I guess (?)

Not bad but I wouldn't consider this a favorite.

Hello, I'm the translator for this novel. I first wrote this review a while ago, but my computer blue-screened and deleted all my shit, so here is a slightly improved version now that I've at least gone through the main story and peeked at a few extras. My opinion of this novel has changed drastically; I actually thought the first arc was pretty well-written, but my view of the story has definitely deteriorated over time. This novel is similar to the novel/manhwa Paper Flower.
Spoiler

Especially the scene where the MC attempts su*cide by jumping off a cliff.

[collapse]
If you didn't like that novel, you probably won't like this one.

The MC is rather pathetic. He is heavily infantilized throughout the novel, being described as obedient, small, weak etc. It is also stated numerous times that he smells like milk, which is a huge red flag. I feel like the author made him an idiot just so he could come off as "cute", but it's just creepy at times. Even after the time-skip, he still acts like a complete child, which is often excused since "he's suffered so much". That's true, but there comes a point where it's not cute anymore. He spends a majority of the first part of the novel sleeping/crying, which is understandable considering all the sh*t the ML puts him through, but he really doesn't do much else. I feel like most of his character is hinged on being a victim and not much else.

I don't have much to say about the ML. He's an abusive as*hole with a tragic backstory that doesn't excuse and only slightly explains his behavior. I will say that he gets some surprising character development very late in the story, but that's not before he gets forgiven for everything (way too easily, might I add). For the first part of the novel, he is horribly abusive, and considering the 8-year age gap and the fact that the MC is mentally impaired, I felt like he was g*ooming the MC.
Spoiler

He locks the MC in his dungeon, forces him to get a tattoo, pushes for the emperor to send the MC away for a marriage alliance, and even gets engaged/almost has a wedding with the MC's older sister, among other things.

[collapse]

There are also issues with the side characters. They all see what the ML is putting the MC through, but they all seem half-hearted in their attempts to help the MC. They pretty much just give up when the ML gets involved. The most promising example was when
Spoiler

the MC's childhood friend kind of kidnapped him and took him to another part of the country to escape the ML. But when the ML showed up, the childhood friend just let the ML take the MC away. I understand that he didn't really have a choice (the MC was ill, and they were in a remote army camp), but he could've at least tried a bit harder to keep the ML away from him.

[collapse]
Also, the villains in this novel are let off way too easily, considering how insanely evil some of them are.

Personally, I also have a problem with the side couples. One of them is the doctor and the ML's bodyguard (my OTP lmao). This might be my heart talking, but the doctor and the bodyguard are different from both the main couple and the other side couple because both individuals are more or less the same age, and both of them are of relatively sound mind. I just wish we could have seen more of them. The second side couple is
Spoiler

between MC's childhood friend and someone who appears in the second arc of the story.I'm not a fan of the other side couple because the MC's childhood friend ends up with someone who is a little too similar to the MC in my opinion (he's basically the MC but more pathetic and with self-esteem levels that go lower than the Mariana Trench). I find that the dynamic is similar to that of the main couple (the MC's childhood friend is actually quite mean to this MC clone before they actually get together). It just rubs me the wrong way.

[collapse]

Finally, the author speedruns major events in the story. Some villain characters are introduced and flushed into oblivion like toilet paper that's been used to wipe the ass of this repetitive plot. For example,
Spoiler

the crown prince is set up to be some big baddie, and actually kidnaps the MC for a few days, but then he just gets deleted in like two chapters.

[collapse]
It's so absurd, you have to read it to believe it.

Sorry this is so long-winded and spoiler-heavy. I feel like people will think I'm overexaggerating if I don't provide some evidence. Overall, a very frustrating read even as someone who kind of likes this wife-chasing genre. I don't usually form opinions that are so negative after I read things, so this novel is one of a kind in that regard. Read if you want to be able to play a drinking game with how many times you get annoyed or frustrated (please don't, you'll probably die).

I continued reading this even when I'm already sick of reading it just to see mayyybe things will change but nope.

You won't understand (unless you read this) at how annoyed I am at how mindbogglingly two dimensional these main characters are. It frustrates me to hell that I have to read their stories when I find the side characters to have more depth in them. MC is a fainting princess with emotional memory lifespan of a gnat (granted, it's a medical issue). ML is, what I can think of as... more>> Jaafar from Aladdin, without the power trip but certainly with the same inability for character development.

Expanding that, ML is shit. He's a ruthless selfish as*hole who 'lost the one live he's ever had' (MC), had some heartache, and when he found him again kinda sworn to himself he would treat the MC better. Yet. YET. He never changed his gaslighting manipulation. He's a tiger with unchanging stripes that I want to skin alive and see if he'll grow them back WHICH HE PROBABLY WILL. I feel like his occasional physical sacrifice is WORTHLESS when he gets back to his penchant to manipulating MC (WHO HAS A MENTAL DISABILITY, MIND YOU) into loving him.

I hate the author. MC has memory and thought development issues, so you know what the author did? Make him forget things. Horrible horrible things happened to MC, oh why not make him trivialize his issues? It's fine, he's disabled anyway. Once or twice is fine but more???? F*ck you author.

TL;DR - Whatever ML suffered for the MC got cancelled out when he gaslights the MC I hate him to the core. I hate the MC too, he has the annoying world is tinted pink syndrome. What if it's not pink? WELL IT WILL BE PINK BECAUSE I FORGET IT'S NOT. 'There's a reason for that' I KNOW THERE IS BUT IF AN ANIMAL CAN LEARN TO BE WARY OF PEOPLE AFTER GETTING ab*seD, I DON'T SEE WHY CAN'T A PERSON.

Yes, I am very, very emotionally engaged into professing my utter dislike for this story. <<less

All these reviews are correct, but I gave it 4 stars because the first third of the novel was great. It was clever, had political intrigue, and I will admit that I like Pei Zheng (ML). He's possessive, selfish and abusive towards MC and cold and distant with everyone else, very few (if any) redeeming qualities (he's fine af in the manhua though)

The MC suffered brain damage as a child so he is "slow" now. This doesn't mean that he has to be as dumb and passive as he... more>> is, but I still give him a pass for it because Pei Zheng is the character that kept me interested anyway.

The story goes downhill after Shen Huan shows up (though it was awesome to finally get a female character that wasn't a horrible monster). The character herself is fine, it's just the plot takes a nose dive and gets super repetitive. <<less

Wow I have never seen such a spinless airhead shou whose only fuctional reaction to any situation is to cry and no matter how much the good for nothing selfish abusive ML treats him like the dirt on his shoes he still " obeys" him, the plot is soo s*upid I could puke, at least have the decency of making the misunderstandings tolerable, not as if all the characters are drunk, next I really hoped for a change of ml, I dont mind a scummy ML but this one is... more>> too much of an idiot <<less

I definitely recommend to read the manhua adaptation instead of the novel BUT if you really like the manhua then reading the novel will be very interesting. There are a lot of events that are not shown in the manhua and the novel is often written not only in the MC's pov but also on the ML's, so you will be able to understand better the thoughts and feelings of them at critical parts of their relationship, specially the feelings of the ML, which are kept more like a mistery... more>> in the manhua.

I also really really enjoyed the extras of the main couple, it was a treat that we got to see more of them after all the events of the novel,

Spoiler

and their happy lil family of three melted my heart. Their lil kid is just SO PRECIOUS and the dynamic he has with both the MC and the ML is very sweet,

[collapse]
so definitely make sure to read their extras! And don't listen too much to all the reviews that are being harsh with the MC, I have read my share of useless MCs in danmeis but he definitely is not one of them.

Spoiler

I agree that mostly on the first arcs he is useless because of his powerlessness and mental deficiencies but later when he gets more freedom he definitely is a quick learner and an active person, he made a name for himself, became a miracle doctor, helped his loved ones whenever he could, saved his tribe from an epidemic, saved the ml's life more than once by his own means etc. Etc.

[collapse]

I also wouldn't call his character as a victim but as a survivor because this author really threw everything that could possibly go wrong to a person at him and he suffered and got depressed at times as anyone would, but he kept going on. I think people overall like more perfect characters with big personalities as MCs but this MC is just a very human character. I actually found that interesting, he has his inherent flaws given by his fate and by external circumstances but also has many positive sides that can be overlooked but are still a big part of him, just like any normal person around irl. <<less

if you are thinking of reading this novel, I recommend reading the Manhua first

But for me personally the story is going to make you cry out of anger for the MC; ML never considered his feeling whatsoever and always think of the worst from him, it’s just so sad and frustrating seeing the MC keep getting hurt by the same exact person that he love. ML keep using him for his own gain and deliberately putting him in situations that always cause him harm, never explain anything to him and... more>> just keep showing him affection then go on to hurting him. And when the MC actually gets hurt he just come back and then MC would just forgive him. <<less
