For his entire life, Dugu Zhuo had been toyed with by heaven. His cultivation had been destroyed, his familial bonds had been severed, his friends had passed on, and he was burdened with the crime of patricide. Even his one and only true love, Ye Zhou, had been killed and his soul shattered.

Having lost all hope, he walked every corner of the world accompanied by a spiritual jade containing a single fragment of Ye Zhou’s soul, wishing only to find the other pieces so they could be with one another in a next life.

However, one day, near the end of his life, he wandered into an illusion and suddenly saw Ye Zhou being chased by several beasts.

When he slew those beasts, a strange sound rang by his ears.

“Ding! For slaying a monster, you’ve received 3 low-grade spirit stones.”

“Ding! For slaying a monster, you’ve received a secret book, the Reverse Sword Technique.”

“Ding! For slaying a monster, you’ve received a rare healing item, the Spirit Replenishing Herb.”

“Ding! You’ve gained a level and restored 1% of your cultivation.”

And the Ye Zhou he had just “saved” waved his sword at him furiously, yelling at him, “How dare you steal my monsters!”

Dugu Zhuo: ?

In the VR game Nine Heavens, Ye Zhou met an eccentric player called Dugu Zhuo.

He didn’t understand common sense, he didn’t know the controls, he was never offline, and he often gazed at Ye Zhou with hidden depths in his eyes.

Ye Zhou only thought he had taken a good-looking little disciple, helping him level up step by step, and after flirting for a long time they married each other in the game.

Just when Ye Zhou was considering meeting Dugu Zhuo in the real world, there was a system notification from the game:

[Player Yi Ye Pian Zhou has triggered the final storyline, ‘Sword Tomb’, and unlocked the final boss, Dugu Zhuo.]

Ye Zhou: …

What a coincidence, that was his husband’s name!

Personally, I like this. It’s entertaining; touching sometimes, funny sometimes and the side characters aka teammates’s characters are so interesting. Don’t take it too seriously, don’t think about the logic of certain things and just enjoy the flow.

In essence, for Dugu Zhou (MC/gong) who wandered into the holographic MMORPG Jiu Tian, this is a continuation of his 1st/only life. Meanwhile, for player Ye Zhou (ML/shou), this is his reincarnation/2nd life. Together, they clear the main quest line which is actually based on their shared past. For MC, levelling up in... more>> the game means regaining his cultivation. For ML, completing the storyline allows him to regain part of his soul which in turn improves his health in reality. In reality ML is very ill (think paraplegic and organs failing-caused by his incomplete soul in this reincarnation). So the main storyline functions to reveal the truth of the past, clear misunderstandings, resolve their heart demon and also to make things right in the original/cultivation world.

Yes, the MC is very OP in this story since he knows the storyline, can cultivate, can even create and submit skills and is basically a bug in the game. Even so, I don’t mind it because I think that’s the fun part about reading this relaxing and stress-free story. There are plenty funny moments in the story as well as moments worth contemplating about.

Noteworthy parts:

  • Spoiler

A willow tree demon player who aims to be No.1 player with the highest sin value. A black cat monk who used to be evil cultivator. A lingzhi who’s game character is female but he’s actually male.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

ML’s capitalistic cousin who’s talented in making money and using money to make others do his bidding. He doesn’t actively level up and is more interested in making money in the game. Willow tree demon player ends up working for cousin as a summoned beast.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

    White tiger’s tooth extraction scene.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

White tiger is such a darling that he serves to guard the gate when our main couple is getting close to each other.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

The nurse/nanny’s “... ”, 😬stare at ML’s eyes and then quickly shout for ML’s dad reaction at seeing ML suddenly sitting up or shaking his leg when he suddenly gets better after completing the main storyline and getting back parts of his soul.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

ML’s dad could accept the fact that MC is from cultivation world/doesn’t exists in reality/over 200 years old. Dad’s great. Dad also bought the game company.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

MC and ML broadcast on world channel the questions and answers to their couple’s tacit test in order to quickly pass it because the game doesn’t allow private chat.🤣

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

The dry humour in MC looking at evil practitioners as mere refining ingredients and is proficient in doing so as if he has done it many times while the monks acquiesced to this action because they lived too long in the game and has been desensitised. Cultivators from cultivation world thought of them as being more scary than evil practitioners.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

Cultivation world cultivators wondering what artefacts are keyboard, mouse and monitor.

    [collapse]
It’s interesting to see the comparison between cultivators from real cultivation world and players who play the cultivation world game’s interactions. The former got only one live while the latter can infinitely resurrect. Evil practitioners in real cultivation world are really evil while evil practitioners among the players are not righteous in actions yet pure in soul.

And beyond it all is MC and ML’s love story and ML’s struggle in defining whether their love is influenced by the swords or it’s solely due to themselves.

In real world:

Spoiler

MC came into the real world, work as consultant for the game and as TCM practitioner.

[collapse]

As a closing remark, I would like to state that this is a good relaxing read and it definitely deserves more love and attention. 😘 <<less

The xianxia + modern game setting is interesting, but if you want to read something reasonable, I wouldn't recommend this. The MC (gong) is so op (cuz he's from the real cultivation world so he knows lots of things based on his experience, still, he's too op for me. I don't rlly like it). His skills and identity are too cheating. The storyline is fine, it's about gaming and doing things in MMORPG game plus some mystery solving about the mc's past. The ML (shou) is ok, he's more like... more>> a normal person (compared to mc). The author doesn't give much attention to other extra characters or mc's teammates. I haven't finished this yet so this might be updated later. Don't mind my English, my English sucks and it's my first time writing a review. <<less

It's a funny and original novel about reincarnation, fixing misunderstandings, and having fun. The gaming scenario makes the plotline angst-free, and everything is very light hearted, despite the drama inherent in the background story. The relationship between the two leads develops gradually, softly, wothout any artificial obstacles.

It's a great story. Mixture of game VR xianxia and spiritual world. Translator is very good. I like the story so much that I MTL it.

It's a journey of, meeting new friends and clearing the previous misunderstanding. Human is really trouble.

I absolutely love this novel. The translation is very good so I definitely recommend reading it but the MTL is pretty acceptable too.

I adore how the real cultivation and in-game cultivation plays off each other and how the players interact with the game system since it's pretty freeform and they can basically do almost anything they like.

Spoiler

Like how an originally 'evil' cat yao player ended up as a monk with monk abilities, its basically almost like if a vampire became a cleric and could use turn undead lol

[collapse]

The MC is very OP but it makes sense that he is since he knows real cultivation and can 'game the system' so to speak. The ML seems like a really normal guy and I really enjoyed how the two of them got together.

Spoiler

The MC is so respectful of the ML and never pushes him to do anything he's not uncomfortable with. They feel for each other strongly but later on during a couples question game they both realise that they don't know each other that well (like whats their favourite colours) which they both decide to fix afterwards

[collapse]

The side characters and the shenanigans they got up to are very entertaining and I enjoyed how the main couple had relationships outside of each other and how the different characters played off of each other.

Spoiler

I was really emotional during the final fight when the cat monk talked to the monk NPCs and realise that they were real monks' souls from the cultivation world and they all genuinely care for him and want him to be good and be happy. I also choked up when the lingzhi yao player talked to the monk NPC that first picked him up to help level him up on the first day of the beta.

I also absolutely love how later on when some players end up in the real cultivation world, they still continue to act like it's still a game and the real cultivators look at them in absolute awe and horror. Haha the players act in really bizarre and sociopathic ways like refining 'boss' characters into pills to use as EXP

[collapse]

Overall this was a breezy read with some emotional ups and downs but is generally a feel-good kind of story. The setting is interesting and the main couple is really wholesome. <<less

I MTL'd it which was really difficult in parts so I won't rate the novel yet as I know I missed some important parts. I do not suggest reading the MTL, the translation is great from what I read, so I suggest waiting for the translation.

If I were to rate it right now it would probably be a 3 star, 4 star for the cultivating/game plot and 2 star for the romance.

I loved the MC and his story. His love for the ML confused me though. It may have been... more>> lost in MTL but
Spoiler

in his early life he hated ML and it doesn't really show him falling for the ML or why he fell for ML. Only thing I could guess is the ML was the only one who showed him any goodwill, but even then the ML was cold towards the MC. They finally get together around chapter 108-ish

[collapse]

The ML is more a plot device than a character. His parts aren't much in the current time line and the him in the past is cold and unfeeling
Spoiler

because the sword he is in charge of controls his emotions, also not sure how he fell for MC in his previous life since any extreme emotions were calmed by the sword.

[collapse]

Some of the side characters I loved a couple were annoying and others were barely part of the story.

When the translation is completely out, I will definitely read again. Thos story has its unique points and I'm really liking the cultivation merged with VR. <<less

This is a really good novel. I really recommend this story. Light-hearted story, with pasts that need to be uncovered. Some touching moments also there and a lot of funny banters between the characters (love these ones)

Spoiler
  • Loved interactions between the black cat and buddist monks; and between the lingzhi and monk at taiye temple.
  • I also am glad about the ending of white tiger and MC+ML
    [collapse]
Finished it by MTLing the whole chapter. Hopefully, the translator will continue translating.

Will be back after the whole chapter being translated

There is a thing that doesn't sit right with me, the summary

Spoiler

Ye Zhou already knew that Dugu Zhuo is not a real player, when the System in the game announced that the final boss is Dugu Zhuo
