Chen Ruobing and I is honestly such a beautiful novel. I enjoyed every second of this.

This novel is in the first person told by (and you don't actually learn the mc's name until chapter 5) Sha Yu. There's less dialogue in this novel. It's more detail, and it's more inner dialogue than anything. Sha Yu goes through what is it like basically falling in love with your best friend, respecting them so much that you don't want to ruin it, and the pain, work, and responsibility that comes with that.

Sha... more>> Yu is an open, silly, academically (slightly below) average girl when she is in high school. She enters a rebellious stage at some point, entertains herself with sports, struggles to figure out her identity through dating--to which she never says but it's clear she is a lesbian.

Chen Ruobing, our fl, is a very-well-above-average academically intelligent girl in high school, shooting at the top of the charts of the entire school. Since the story is in Sha Yu's POV, we don't get her direct thoughts, but how she treats Sha Yu, how she reacts, her expressions, it's clear she has feelings for her friend. (Bis*xual queen mhm).

The novel is so nice because it feels so real. If someone told me this was based on a true story, I would 100% believe it. The emotions feel so real, the actions feel so real, the connections and relationships and scenarios. It really brought me back to being a kid during the high school arc (about half the novel, first ten~ chapters).

As they get older, their feelings get stronger. Sha Yu starts to think about love more and what she should do--every time circling back to Chen Ruobing.

The novel is a clean and easy read; it has a solid and beautiful translation. There were happy and devastating moments. And in the end, it all came together. Yes, it took them 16 years to figure out and be happy, but doesn't that feel most genuine? They cherished their friendship and didn't want to ruin it, they respected each other and each other's emotions and orientation (both assuming the other was straight lol).

There are so many things I can list off that hit you for being so realistic and relatable, but I'll leave that for you to experience if and when you decide to read.

This "spoiler" is about Chen Ruobing's name. Not too much of a spoiler but enough said to where it is, but knowing it won't ruin the novel or anything:

Spoiler

You catch it in one of the chapters when Sha Yu quotes herself directly. "Xiao-Bing!" she says. I think the translator might have misinterpreted this as a nickname. "Little Bing." but I actually think her real name was Xiao Bing or Xiao Ruobing, as Sha Yu explains when she works in America that she read a story where a character's surname was Chen, so she decided, in her story about their story, that she would change her surname to Chen.

First I would like to say thank you so much for translating this story iris translators! It was very understandable and fluent. I really enjoyed it. As for the story itself, the realism and first person perspective gave the story a down to earth feel. If you're on the hinge about reading it, just do it, it's pretty short. It's about a girl and her best friend essentially. Full thoughts: (spoilers)

Spoiler

While I momentarily feared that they would end up apart in the end, reminiscing about their first gay relationship, I was very happy to see them together in the end. In addition, although some condemn Xiao Bing for obeying her parents, I believe she is worthy of sympathy. Early on, she was shown to be realistic despite liking fictional stories with her responding to MC's independent cinderella with, '"It's not very realistic. In that era, girls who weren't married and had no kids wouldn't even be guaranteed the most basic standard of living. And with what they were taught from a young age, it was hard for them to break through ideological shackles, " Chen Ruobing said and heaved a sigh. "She wouldn't be happy."' (ch 9), and how she reflects that society has not changed its opinion on an "independent cinderella" even now. In my opinion, that was foreshadowing to her own eventual submission to her parents (society). She's sensitive to society's constraints, not everyone can be bullheaded like some anime protagonist MC and ignore all the rules. If anything, her realism creates an interesting juxtaposition with the MC's rebellious stage. In addition, there was even more explanation with her considering how being in a gay relationship would lead to a lifetime of judgement. Although from a fantastical perspective rejecting society and traditionalist parents been idolized, in reality being cut off is often extremely painful, both monetarily and emotionally. By considering these things, it reveals XB's commitment to the MC and seriousness about her relationship, and it establishes a certain depth to the story. In the end, I think her decision was very in character with her, being more of a brains > emotion type.

She's not without flaws, but XB shouldn't be condemned for obeying her parents. She's been indoctrinated by a conformist society (this was even commented on in the first chapter by the MC with uniforms and friendship) and she is so intelligent she understands a little too well the risks of pursuing passion. For me, my main issue with her is how she never reached out once the MC stopped contacting, never taking the initiative. Having been on both sides, it's pretty painful to be one sidedly trying to maintain a relationship, and I completely understand why they fell apart after that.

Overall, this story was a breath of fresh air after reading many wish fulfillment yay happy ending JP novels and short stories. Although it took them ~16 years to get together properly, they both changed so much and ended up with such a happy ending I think it was worth it. Reminding me of three days of happiness, although they may have lost a decade and a half to the tribulations of life, the relationship they have now is even more treasured becuase of it.

Ehe, my favorite part of the story was when XB was like I have a girl I like and the MC immediately understood who she was talking about (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

It was very refreshing after seeing many misunderstandings in other stories ahaha

Who's the bot who gave this 1 *???

Anyways, I was scrolling thru the shoujo ai/yuri tagged novels and found this. 20 whole chapters, but I hadn't ever seen this before. Imagine my surprise when I find out they were all uploaded today??? Course, I binged it. It's girl's love, it's only 20 chapters, and it's the weekend.

I'm telling you, this is real good. It tells of the life of two "besties" from when they first meet in high school, and some of their daily life and other occurences until ... more>>

they get together :)

. Must read if you're a shoujo ai fan, but I don't think you need me to tell you that LOL.

Also, thanks Iris Translation, for picking out this novel to translate and dumping the entirety of the chapters onto this site :D <<less

It's a good quick read :) The atmosphere here is more of melancholic than fluffy. I still had fun with the roller coaster ride, and I would love to read it again if I have the time. The story is short so it's very fast paced.

The story is about two best friends who fell in love. They're bestfriends since highschool. The MC is a sporty girl while the FL is the top one student in her grades (and the school goddess lol).

This story has a kind of magic to it. The straightforward retelling of the development and eventual culmination of our MC’s feelings for her FL sucks you in from beginning to end. Both characters were thoughtful and grounded. Neither wanted their whole world to live or die on love. With the passage of time it became clear their world’s existed just fine apart but were happiest when together. It isn't often you can read such a short novel and be given such a complete picture of a relationship. Our MC... more>> was unconventional in the sense she played and loved hard and otherwise was completely middle of the road. Our FL was unconventional in that a life outside her work passions was difficult for her to engage in without the MC. I strongly recommend this to anyone who loves romance but is tired of shallow stories without any weight behind the choices the characters make together and apart. <<less

Overall Rating: 4.5 (I'll be listing my thought in a less complicated format)

    • CH 1-5 : Grabbed my attention and made me very optimistic about this book.
    • Note: Now I've gotten the ultimate vibe for this novel, The atmosphere here is more of melancholic than fluffy. I still had fun. The story is short so it's very fast paced.
    • CH 6-15, MC starts going through maturaity with many feelings that were carried out well in the book. We learn about FL's relationship and how she goes through her relationship with MC.
    • Note: I'd love to hear more about the POV of FL, because after 15 chapters I started to feel upset with her while at the same time wanting her to be fleshed out more... because she has a very good starting Premise
    • CH 16-20 Although I didn't love this relationship I admired the MC and the emotional/plot development.
    • Although it took them ~16 years to get together properly, they both changed so much and ended up with such a happy ending I think it was worth it. Reminding me of three days of happiness, although they may have lost a decade and a half to the tribulations of life, the relationship they have now is even more treasured becuase of it.
FL Super Rant:

Spoiler

She's not without flaws, but FL shouldn't be hated for her thoughts too much. She's been raised by a conformist society and she is so intelligent she understands the risks of that would be taken. My main issue with her is how she never reached out once the MC stopped contacting, never taking the initiative. It's pretty unreasonable for her to expect MC to one sidedly trying to maintain a relationship, and I completely understand why they fell apart after that.

This was one reason I ultamitaly felt very conflicted about the relationship, I ended up completing it and I'm somewhat glad... Although I feel FL's character could use shaping.

A one-sided POV from the MC so it certainly had its shortcomings; but otherwise a good, bitter sweet story.

The MC and FL tacit understanding were on a different level, and though only the MC admitted that FL was her soulmate since the story was written under her POV, I had no doubt the FL felt the same way.

Just as the MC realized she was in love with the FL, the FL had also fell in love with the MC. However, the FL knew that during her time and place, such... more>> trouble feelings were unacceptable by those around them. Thus, she was always suggestive and gave both herself and the MC a chance to try dating boys. When that didn't work out, the FL was brave enough to come out to her parents even though the result was within her expectations.

However, there was a part in this story where their tacit understanding left a bitter taste in my mouth as it brought up such a disturbing scenes but remained unexplained.
Spoiler

This was when the MC, Sha Yu, accidentally discovered red marks on Ruobing's body and healing wounds on her right nipple. This was somewhat foreshadow in the early chapter, and at that time I had thought that FL may be abused by her parents or something, but despite that, she studied well and remained the top student.

[collapse]
That was the furthest from the true.

She was abused and hit by her first boyfriend, Yang Xu

Spoiler

Their conversation was like:

SY inquired 'was it him?' RB replied 'um' and then SY asked 'does it hurt?' RB weakly nodded 'um'.

MC said, 'you will break up with him right?' then FL said 'we already broke up' and cried for a long time... End of their conversation.

I was speechless... Wait a minute! Excuse me?? What the heck happened here? Was this some kind of BD*M?

[collapse]

First of all, the FL was a smart, responsible, and decisive person. Second, she did not love her boyfriend that much. How could she allow such treatments from him? This left another bitter taste in my mouth... She was decisive, yes, as she really did dump him as soon as that happen. But she was not as responsible as I thought she was because she spent hours at the hospital working and caring for patients, but neglecting her own daughter.

The MC and FL couldn't forget each other even when they were out of contact for almost 10 years. I'm happy that they were finally brave enough to stay together and move on to the next stage of their lives. <<less

Bitter sweet, but in a good way. Don't go in expecting fluffy happy times, but stick with it and the pay-off is well worth the investment.

I will say it probably helps to be all grown up and adult-like, as a reader - if you bring your own experience of love and heartbreak it will make the bitterness that much more sweet, and the sweetness that much more painful.

On the technical matters, the translation is excellent, though it's hard to know how well it matches the tone and style of the... more>> original - the style of writing can be a little challenging, but it feels like the right approach for the story. The characters and their emotions are key, and they come through beautifully - again, it's well worth the investment of time and energy to read this. <<less

Sweet, fluff, light heart, and chill. There can be some up and downs here and there but nothing major. A beautiful piece for you to enjoy your day with if you are a fan of Shoujo-Ai.

I honestly don't like the story because it has some elements that I don't like, but I'm just happy that they still ended up together and the story is HE. It's a great story tbh, just too realistic for me ig, haha, who the hell reads novels to escape reality and would like to be hit by something realistic? Many people apparently, but not me. Good read thoughhh

The translation is top notch!

Reading the story gave me a roller-coaster of emotions. I really liked how it was portrayed but it made me quite stressed but over all it was well done. I can't help but say this a bittersweet story.

I didn't enjoy it very much, it's more of a sad, bittersweet story.

Also since it's short the characters don't feel fleshed out, especially the FL.

The Translation is Top Notch though

If you enjoy reading a more realistic take on the problems of Girls in love in a homophobic society, where they suffer to conform social norms, it's not a bad read.

Spoiler

They do get properly together at the end, if that's a happy end is up to the reader. Imo MC was too obsessed with FL and should have move on because FL couldn't get her sh*t together

I'd say this story is more sour than sweet, despite the fact it has a happy ending. While I appreciate the very realistic take on a modern Chinese lesbian relationship, I wish the authors that write these kinds of stories show us just as many sweet moments of the characters' relationship as they do the difficult moments. As it is now the ending feels more bittersweet than satisfying- the payoff isn't as good as I'd hoped. Still, very well written with good characters and well translated.
