Elysia lived in the shadow of a noble name, her once bright future now tarnished by the harsh hand of her husband, Dominic. For eight years, she endured a life of quiet suffering. But then came Enoch, a man whose words cut through the murk of her existence like a blade. His touch, firm and unexpected, stirred something in her.

“I don’t know what I’d do if I end up embracing you,” he said, his voice a low, dark promise. “Will you allow me to seduce you? It would very much please me.”

In the midst of her desolation, Elysia found a glimmer of something she had forgotten. Her world seemed to spin when she met Killian, a man who saw beyond her bruises. “The trade is equivalent to an exchange,” she said, her voice a whisper.

Killian, with a gaze that could see through lies, offered her a choice.

“Then take out what you have. I don’t know what it is, but it should be attractive enough. I don’t like cheap deals.”

Elysia, in her pain, shed her past like an old coat.

Killian’s eyes softened as he looked at her, his voice barely a murmur. “Do I look that frightening to you that I would not hold a battered woman? You’re beautiful, you know. Cherish yourself more. It is what you deserve. It is what you are owed.”

This is one of those stories where you can't help but feel conflicted while reading it. On one hand, it's got an interesting premise and a strong female lead, but on the other hand, there are a lot of issues with the way things play out.

The story centers around FL, a woman stuck in an abusive marriage who turns to using her body to get what she wants from the two MLs. Honestly, the fact that she openly admits this in the novel does make her a pretty complex character,... more>> but it's also pretty hard to ignore how uncomfortable it feels. It's clear that she's doing what she feels is necessary to survive, but at the same time, it often feels like the plot is using her trauma as a way to justify her actions. This sets the tone for the relationships between FL and the MLs, which are... definitely not healthy.

The two MLs are, to put it lightly, not great people at first. They enter into a contract with her, where it's clear they're more interested in their own desires than actually respecting her. The "lust to love" trope is pretty strong here, but it feels more like manipulation than genuine romance, especially with how the characters treat each other early on. It's tough to root for these characters because they're all making questionable decisions for personal gain.

Spoiler

But the thing that really started to bug me was the way the story handles FL's aphasia. She's dealing with a communication disorder, but it's honestly glossed over. It's frustrating because you would think her condition would play a bigger role in her actions and decisions, but it often feels like the story just uses it as a plot device without truly exploring the impact it has on her. I mean, she's essentially navigating complicated relationships with the MLs, all while dealing with a serious condition, and yet the novel doesn't really show how that affects her choices. Instead, it feels like she's just checking off boxes in her revenge plot without much of a struggle.

Another thing I couldn't quite get behind was the whole "contractual relationship" idea. The nobles in this world seem to treat cheating as no big deal, as long as it's consensual. This leads to a lot of morally questionable behavior, which the novel doesn't really critique. Everyone just accepts that cheating is a part of life, and it's frustrating because there's no real exploration of the emotional or ethical consequences. The story seems more interested in pushing drama for drama's sake, without asking whether these actions are truly okay or not.

[collapse]

This story has a lot of potential with its complex characters and dark themes, but it doesn't always hit the mark. The romance feels more like a toxic back-and-forth than a healthy relationship. It's an okay read if you're into morally messy stories, but don't expect a well-developed exploration of its themes. <<less
