So the good is that it's not terribly written and mildly engaging since I desperately wanted to know what happened to MC. Also, MC and ML are basically actually childhood sweethearts (my jam!) until someone got in the way and it has a happy ending for better or for worse. The bad is that I absolutely despise ML, MC is a the equivalency of a doormat, there isn't nearly enough groveling and the story isn't fleshed out enough.

The plot is basically ML despises MC because he believed she chased away... more>> his true love (the best friend in question and a two faced b*tch). MC is then mistreated, humiliated, neglected, he even offers her up to other men for their pleasure (it was supposed to be a "joke" however) and when she finally just wanted a divorce he suddenly found himself absolutely unwilling to let her go and chases her back down under the pretense that she's legally his wife and thus his (forever I guess.) with no apologies. It then becomes this dog blooded melodramatic "i love you I hate you" plot where he drags back his wife but people keep getting in their way.

Characterwise I pretty much hated everyone, you get hints that MC saved ML from bestie but bestie pulled a reverse uno and pushed all the blame onto MC. ML treated her like actual sh*t and has the redemption arc that is so flimsy you could snap it in half. The best part? He's probably the only person who straight up didn't know how MC actually helped him and when he finally started to dig, he straight up tells the two faced bestie not to push him because he didn't want to investigate further and ruin his image of her. His grandfather knew, MC obviously knew, the servants knew, literally it seems like everyone else knew and yet not a single person tries to tell him and he doesn't even try to investigate until later. Oi. MC on the other hand, literally just bottles it up and in the end somehow still loves him and is finally rewarded with happiness. While I don't hate her, she doesn't grow a spine and is literally pushed and pulled all around in the story.

My issues with this story isn't even the premise. I like groveling romances (MC is mistreated but the other has to beg for the chance to make it up to them), I don't mind power imbalances so long as I personally know the "weaker" of the two is the real one who calls the shots, hell I'm even extremely laidback so there's not a lot I can't forgive in fiction. My problem is ML actually hated her, treated her as a personal punching bag and faced no consequence, with no apology or regret at the end for their past. Even though I had finished it because I wanted to find out the ending, it just wasn't to my taste. <<less

This is a rare "gem" where I hate both the MC and the ML but the MC a lot more. She's a brain-dead and entitled fool.

Spoiler

Just because you have risked yourself to save someone's life, does that entitle you for love from that person?

[collapse]

Maybe there's a plot twist to redeem the MC since there are only 5 chapters and the MTL version until chapter 13 couldn't be trusted much but so far, yeah, I hate her for so many reasons.

Spoiler

I'm like, are you expecting him to be able to read your mind just because you are obsessed "love" him? What kind of s*upid are you? If you just tell him he's going to thank you later without actually telling him anything, how the f*ck could you expect him to finally let go of his hate due to his misunderstanding and love you?

I know for sure that I wouldn't. Time cannot heal everything. At least not without proper explanation in this case.

Just because you are kind, have risked your life for him, and had always been trying to save him from the gold digger, that doesn't mean you automatically deserve his love or have the right to act like a victim after you have kept everything a secret from him.

To make it worse, you force someone who doesn't love you to marry you? Yeah, you may not deserve the slaps and r*pe, but you certainly deserve his hate and everything else.

[collapse]

Of course, I'm not saying the ML is not a scum. He is. Both of them are scums, actually. And both of them are brain-dead thanks to the writer. But also thanks to the way the ML is written, I can't see him as an actual character but rather a cut-and-paste doll to act as the ML because the writer is too lazy to write a proper one. That's how I get to hate the MC more than the ML.

All in all, it's a messed up Chinese harlequin story but like the person above me said, it's still strangely engaging to read. <<less

Wow, I can’t believe I read the whole thing. It’s really, really, really bad - but not fun bad, sad to say.

The characters here have zero emotional depth, and while I wouldn’t go so far as to call them cartoonish, they have no resemblance to any humans I have encountered. The female lead is incredibly passive and seems to have spent her entire marriage waiting for her relationship to change. No proactive measures or cutting bait for her. She’s just gonna wait, misunderstood by her husband and with a huge... more>> martyr complex, and hope that someone reveals the truth that everyone knows. Well, everyone except the business savvy husband.

And then a bunch of very dramatic things happen, wherein the husband discovers some truths and he changes, and all the years of physical and emotional abuse just wash away. Huh? Maybe it might’ve made sense with a longer story to fill in the gaps, and an author who has some grasp on reality and has some writing skills.

All in all, this is a disaster, without many (any) redeeming qualities - much like the main characters.

Spoiler

Could someone please just explain what the big secret was? That the bestie (hahaha) did her cousin? Is that it?! It’s not nothing, but hardly seems to fit the idea that getting rid of the villainous bestie would be referred to as “saving” him. And in context, it’s unclear when this happened, so I’m not sure how it really related to the husband. While it may be squicky and possibly create a PR issue, it’s not like a man of means would suffer greatly because of this. He could just buy some people off, cover up, or just ditch the woman, if the secret got out.
