In a world ravaged by a virus turning people into zombies, the zombie kings wage war against each other, leaving humanity in despair.

When Ji Yanqing was escaping, he softened his heart for a moment and rescued two little buns. The tiny, dirty pair looked pitifully frail, pulling at Ji Yanqing’s heartstrings, and he vowed to take good care of them.

However, when faced with betrayal and surrounded by zombies, Ji Yanqing thought his end had come. To his astonishment, the two little buns he was protecting in his arms let out a milky roar, sending the zombies fleeing in terror.

Bun No. 1: “Whoever dares to bully dad again, Zai Zai will eat him in one bite!”

Bun No. 2: “Dad says not to eat weird things. Today, Zai Zai was good, didn’t bully zombies or eat weird stuff!”

___

After he lost his cub, he embarked on a relentless pursuit, aiming to confront the legendary zombie king, a creature feared by both deities and mortals alike: ” . . . ”

Ji Yanqing QAQ : “I don’t know what happened, it wasn’t me, they started it!”

When Ji Yanqing encountered a man who, despite being a fearsome Corpse King, was unexpectedly cold, handsome, and alluring, he decided to flee.

On the first day of his escape, Ji Yanqing was so anxious he couldn’t sleep.

On the second day, he felt a sense of happy and carefree.

On the third day of running away from home, Ji Yanqing suddenly found himself being blocked on the doorstep by one enormous, two mid-sized and three small sized corpse kings.

That night, gazing at the imposing figure of the Corpse King sprawled on his bed, Ji Yanqing couldn’t help but shed tears of frustration, QAQ , why did even the big one rely on him?

Most important thing to mention: The description has little to do with the actual story.

It's a serious, horror and action-packed novel, there's no cuteness or light-heartedness that the description seems to promise.

If you want a cute apocalyptic cub story with humour, this ain't it.

... more>> Characterisation is splendid, action on point, no holes, obviously carefully planned progression, stable, interesting worldbuilding with the right amount of explanation and inexplicable mystery.

MC is the typical super-good-looking type, but he's strong, vicious, caring and cruel when he needs to.

ML might seem cold but 99% of the time he's just a confused mess not understanding anything.

The romantic development is slow and believable, the team-building aspect well done, and both kids are very loveable, they behave like small children in an apocalyptic setting instead of like spoiled brats or adults.

Writing style is neither pretentious nor elementary-school level, it has the perfect complexity and reading ease such a story should have.

Edit: The thing between ML/the kids and MC is dragged out and so is the final conflict, there's a tonal shift that's quite brutal, from serious too rather silly, which is really strange after the death of thousands of people and even named side-characters.

I've read other novels from this writer and they had the same problem, it's just something she seems to do with most of her stories, for whatever reasons.

Still four stars, but reluctantly. <<less

I really like the development of the story so far. The MC is reasonable and he's the sort that is kind, but is also the type that sets boundaries and knows when to be firm when needed. The ML as of right now is like a stoic puppy like figure right now; but at the moment their development is slow burn.

Their interactions are mild and the kids that the MC picked up are cute. Very plot heavy, as expected of an apocalyptic novel but there's the sense of pervading hope... more>> even when things are bleak. The MC pulls no punches and literally thinks up the most riskiest plans to get his group out of danger and that's why so many people are drawn to him. Haven't gotten up to the reveal yet though. <<less

A good read! There are no angst, face slapping etc and more of a slice of life in the 2md half. I keep smiling while reading it. I also like how the ending is written, u'd feel tranquility. It's good that the author didn't divulge everything so I didn't know what to expect. Thought that the story would focus on apocalypse, leveling - up of powers etc but they focused more on the charas and their lives.

Not recommended for those who want a fast-paced story.

Downside: ML's past, before the apocalypse, as well as the children, aren't mentioned in the main story (not sure in extra ch's). Also, author seemed like he portrayed the MC to have a good instinct but
Spoiler

the MC failed to accept the identities of the ML and his adopted children as zombies
