this is literally just pity-bait. The whole story is sad, every character is sad, everything about this novel is just sad. It's not interesting at all because there's nothing else about this novel except for being sad. The setting is some generic magic academy, the powers arent even elaborated upon, theres like only five real characters in this novel. The novel just throws sad backstories about random characters out of nowhere. I cant feel anything about these characters because they all have two character traits except the main character who... more>> only has one, being pitiful (liking bean sprouts is not a character trait). The elf is arrogant and likes the Original MC. The Original MC likes the main character. The president is a good person that doesn't stop bullying even when she sees it. None of the characters ever talk to each other because we gotta have misunderstandings, and that means there is no character depth. When the main character insists on being friends with the elf, I literally did not care. Not even hate or frustration, because i've never seen them talk about anything other than macarons. The whole novel is like this. Whenever any character does something, it just falls flat because we know nothing about that character.

i get that people are tired of munchkin novels with op MCs and this is different, but it just felt tiring going through this because I can't attach myself to any of these characters. <<less

This one is a bit of a tear-jerker. The MC, whose name is Scarlet, is transported into a background character of a book full of tragedies they read. She decides to do what she can to survive, and so tries giving everything she can to become friends with the female heroine so she doesn't die (hence the title), although the heroine does not reciprocate. Lots of misunderstandings soon follow that make everyone pity her, although some of it is actually true, hinting at a dark traumatic past. Most of the... more>> story takes place at the Academy everyone is enrolled in, although there are hints the plot will move on elsewhere in the future.

The character interactions are the bread and butter of this work, and are enough to get you invested. A lot of it is depressing or tear-jerking as previously mentioned, but its not too overdone. The translation is very good, with only a few mistakes in the 47 chapters I've read so far.

The gender bender does not play a huge role in the book, but its also not just a gimmick that is immediately forgotten and plays a part throughout. There are romantic subplots among other characters (the heroine especially), though Scarlet herself doesn't seem interested and likely won't be in the future. Overall, I've enjoyed what I've read until now to recommend it. Hopefully many more chapters for the future, enjoy ~ <<less

As the story goes, it's fine to pass the time, but that's about it, I especially don't recommend binge reading it if you have low or no tolerance for s*upidity, because it's too recurrent.

As characters go... the enemies have interesting backstories that explain motivations, which is good and it's mostly what made me want to keep reading it in the first place

The good side... the extras are fine, they act like a common person overall at least so no issues there.

The principal characters however... annoy me for different reasons. MC... more>> is slow witted, to put it mildly. The original protagonist did improve a bit but I can't help disliking him because that doesn't really balance the past actions. As for Sylvia, she's mostly fine, but....

This brings me to the thing I dislike the most here, which is the contrived way the relationships are enforced, mostly in those 3 and made me want to quit the story altogether several times.

It was understable for Sylvia to focus a bit on the MC because she had no friends before so it was a learning process, especially with MC being dumb and whiny. If it gone to the shoujo-ai route MAYBE I would be more forgiving (because at least then it would be a trope, even if it's something I don't enjoy), but as friends the possessiveness was taken too far to make sense. I mean, it isn't even comical relief.

Then there's the MC and the original protagonist situation (this is my no-no). MC is a guy inside, supposedly an hetero one, thus theoretically he isn't interested in men and acts as such in every occasion all along the story.

Even if we consider how dumb MC is, the way he acts around the time the witches get more active about the original protagonist isn't what I would call friendship. It gets increasingly different from that as things progress. I wouldn't care if it made sense, but I but as I said, it's too contrived as it was written for me to let it go. Even seeing them as chosen family is still nonsensical, it's just too abrupt.

MC clearly has emotional issues he should solve but regardless...I'm aware emotions are mostly subplot, sort of, but if it appears and it sucks (which it does) it's disrupting. The story isn't that great in itself either, so it turns into an issue with this one.

Tipically I do enjoy romance and emotional stuff, so again, to be clear, it's the way it was done not the thing itself I have a problem with.

The reason I tried to keep reading was just to see the end, and for respect to the translators, which I see did a good job (though is very annoying that the episodes are at patreon now), not because I found the story to be worth it past some point. <<less

If you wish to truly enjoy this novel, you should give this novel at least 30 chapters before you decide whether it's good or not.

The novel starts with the classic trope of "I got reincarnated into a novel I read in my past life, " with a classic academy setting and superpowered humans. However, the world is actually much darker than we thought. This story has two main strengths: it's MC and atmosphere.

But as the story progressed, we realized that the MC did all of that in order for himself to survive the longest, because Sylvia is one of the characters in the novel that survived to the end. The MC is very mentally unwell, and as he knows the tragic ending of the novel, he decides to not think about his current situation in order for his mentally to preserve. This is also why this novel has such little descriptions on objects in the earlier chapters and why the MC adjusted so quickly to being transported to a different world; it's all because the MC doesn't want to get attached to the world and people because they know they are all going to die. A lot of thought is put into making the MC, including his backstory, the body he possessed's backstory, his actions, his personality, and his character developments.

The atmosphere of this novel is a perfect blend of heaviness and comedy. The misunderstandings and MC's jokes are funny, but they make the suffering even more sad.

The side characters are amazing as well. As other reviewers mentioned, the original MC, Yoon Siwoo, and Sylvia are pretty annoying in the first 20 chapters. However, they are just making decisions influenced by their emotions. Once their emotions and misunderstandings cleared up, they became actually good and kind characters. Long story short, give this novel 30 chapters. You won't regret it.

Can we talk about how nice the MC's name sounds? Like, Scarlet Evande. Evande is such a nice name, it's crazy. <<less

I'll start this off with saying, I don't normally write reviews. Partly because I'm lazy, mostly because I'm awful at putting my thoughts into words. Anyway, this story, as you've likely seen in other reviews here, can get quite dark. It gets grim, morale gets low, but despite that, you find yourself rooting for these characters, wanting them to succeed, wanting them to happy.

I don't have too much to say other than my own personal feelings, but I didn't really know what I was getting into, or what to expect.... more>> It started off pretty slow and without much big plot movements going on, but when it picked up, it picked up. The day, or rather, the night that I started reading this novel, I found myself so engrossed in it that I ended up not getting any sleep. I read for 13 hours straight, and for a lot of that time, I'm not afraid to admit that I cried. A lot. I didn't even know it was possible to shed that many tears. But, seeing what these characters go through, I just couldn't help it. That's something I love about reading light/web novels versus manga/manhwa. They're very different mediums, and with the former, you get so much more insight into the characters' thoughts and feelings that you just can't get in a more "comic"-like format. This isn't to discount the latter though, they're both very enjoyable ways to consume media, and I would be oh so happy to see a manhwa adaptation of this story. Especially because that'll give me more material to use as my profile picture on Discord!

But, back to how I felt going through this story. It hit me hard, but I kept reading, and... suffice to say, I love the main cast. Especially the protagonist, Scarlet. Her personality, what she fights for, everything else, it's just so... respectable? I genuinely hold so much respect for Scarlet, even though I know she's not a real person. I want to change myself to be more like her, just because I find her actions so commendable, and something that more people should strive to be like, especially in a world like ours where people kind of just be a**holes to be a**holes. I can't say I've ever had any other piece of media hit me like this-- and honestly? It's... kind of scary, but I like it, a lot. The ending was really good too, though I definitely wanted more, and that's where the side story comes in. I thought it'd maybe be something that'd like be little things that happened during the main story, but no, it's more of an epilogue, and I LOVE the direction it's heading. It's everything I wanted, it's putting these characters in a scenario I wanted, giving them what I so desperately wanted them to have, and seeing it come together has me filled with an indescribable feeling that I can only describe as pure, unadulterated joy.

I think this story is absolutely worth a read, and though the more recent chapters are locked behind a Patreon paywall, I think it's worth it, especially because from my understanding, only one person is working on this alone. I would also say to ignore the reviews saying the story is just "pity bait". It's so much more than that, and what these characters go through actually builds towards something, and meaningfully changes them. Shoutouts to Sarimang for writing this phenomenal story, I'll need to find a way to support them directly, and more shoutouts to Ashborn for translating this whole thing. Hey there, first time critiquing here.

So far (having read up to Chapter 130) I can say that this won't be everyone's cuppa tea, especially if you don't like sad/heavy/depressing stories, but I will say that despite this there are enough humorous instances to prevent it being a [Depression Overload]- kinda. It’s still pretty sad.

In addition, in regards to pity bait; if it works, it works. If not, hope you find something you'll like.

Basically very well done in my incredibly humble opinion, and I'm looking forward to see where the story... more>> goes.

This series is truly well made. I made an account just to review it.

Like other users have said, the story begins as a comedy highlighting misunderstandings, such as Scarlet Evande is seen entering a motel with a middle aged man and then exiting with an envelope with cash and is seen by the ML, Siwoo. The misunderstandings involving Siwoo are particularly funny.

Many clues about the story, such as Scarlet's flame which doesn't burn, produced when she is happy, lead into the later part of the series, where the action and... more>> suspense really pick up. All the witches, all the clues, are wrapped up one way or another. Every villain has a more or less compelling backstory.

This is a worthwhile novel until the end! <<less

Also, some say the original protagonist of the book is annoying and I totally understand that since he is trying to woo our MC. But being honest, I wouldn't even care if they end up together if it means our MC is finally safe.

I know it's weird, but the MC is so traumatized that if she finds safety that way I wouldn't even frown.

The few first chapters of the novel made me think it would be another generic isekai into a fictional world they know, but as I read more chapters, I've noticed that the writing of the novel was pretty good and explored parts of the psyche most other novels wouldn't take seriously. I also like how the original world of the novel MC read was pretty dark and gritty.

I love the Darker setting, especially thanks to the fact that the MC knows things will go south makes their actions more interesting and their thoughts that they don't know what they will be able to change makes me very excited about reading the next chapter.

It's been getting better every chapter. MC feels like a real mob character since they aren't instantly op and even now have not stolen a single "opportunity" from OML. They actually explore their powers and have to learn how to fight + get used to how scary fighting can be.

There's also some interesting mystery with the past of the character MC is possessing and MC's past life also gets some exploration.

I'm not exactly good with commenting, but the chapters are great, slightly fast forward but the misunderstandings make the chapters better.

The MC also has trauma and is actually quite good, and there are misunderstandings that are good for drama and keeps the readers entertained (and frustrated because of the OriginalMC of that word lol).

Also I'm pretty sure the MC is this close 👌 to becoming insane because DAMN the trauma/backstory—

The story has a much darker vibe than I thought it would have from the art / setting. The MC is someone who lived a rough life and has a lot of unhandled trauma. She's now placed in an academy setting with high stakes surrounded by kids who have their own issues. So far we haven't seen any of the original story's plot yet, it's been all drama between characters.

One thing to keep in mind for the series is that the “Unreliable Narrator” tag plays a heavy role in the novel, and everything isn’t as straight as it seems. As of where I’m at, the mc’s exact background isn’t clear but does play a part in the novel which is very interesting and mysterious. It’s a great read even if it can just be MC suffering most of the time, well written, would recommend. <<less

Tbh, as of now I'm very impressed.

At first I thought it was it's all tragedy events like some reviews says. However, the story itself touched me alot. The characters writing is good and the translation is very enjoyable.

Some actions of the characters might seem strange, but if you look it from the character's perspective and experiences, it makes sense. Which makes the story much more interesting and makes me thrilled to read more.

I must say, I created an account just to rate this novel, it's that good!

The story starts off as a light hearted comedy with the GenderBent MC and her friends causing misunderstandings and comedies.

But then after several chapters, it starts to have sad backstories and moments, then slowly the comedy drops and things increase in seriousness, then it becomes a tragedy series that is still good with occasional comedic moments, but it's mostly a serious novel now.

The MC at first has confusion about being GenderBent, but after the first few... more>> chapters, it seems that she makes peace with her new female body and doesn't have any problems with it, probably

Surprisingly actually good novel, I didn't expect much from Korean magic academy web novel, I expected a munchkin op FMC who chase after ogfMC skirts and harem of girl, the usual kind of boring novel, but I was wrong completely wrong, it's not that at all, instead it is a heavy drama novel about struggle against enemy, FMC herself, and learn how to lean on to each other and it seems everyone are standing against the tide, it's hard but that's why this novel are so good. Slow start and weird choices but it eventually starts to speed up later and those weird choices start to pay off especially with how the MC is practically a stranger in another world, someone who could almost never belong, reinforced by the person they became in the story being next to nameless, a relic of an afterthought for World building.

Romance however is kinda weird and the "Hero" (Not MC) is kind of a stalker and ridiculously powerful and the idea of an idiot plot (non negatively) starts building up after... more>> misunderstanding after misunderstanding.

You need to be patient to enjoy the WN however but it's alright at the end of the day. Because it's something I'd enjoy regardless of the flaws I poke into it. <<less

This starts surprisingly good, stays there for a while, and then starts going down towards ok. It's definitely a (melo) drama story at first, so YMMV. Funnily enough, how interesting the plot is seems to go inverse to MC's mental health; the best parts (rating 5) were when they weren't in a great place, and it gets kinda stereotypical (rating 3ish) once everything is going well.

Basic premise is, MC did not take being thrown into a story world well. MC doesn't cope well for some time, and the narrative does... more>> a good job of reflecting that state of mind as it deteriorates.

Unlike a lot of transmigration plots, MC doesn't just wake up in a new body and confidently accomplish a quest checklist acting like they're tourists in that world.

A past life has an effect on things -- old traumas or scars aside, having your routine suddenly tossed out the window and being shoved into an environment you know is going to go to hell, in an unfamiliar body, interacting with people you know are supposed to die horribly, all with no background, connections, support net or anyone to share problems with, isn't exactly material for a healthy mindset.

After waking up in this body MC has no idea what to do outside of an admissions ticket. Since the OG plot was a tragedy story, she latches onto a source of survival as her only real stability -- the FL, one of the few characters to stay alive in the original work. The FL character is pretty unlikable on first contact, but has reasons and a good up and down redemption arc. MC eventually starts to feel like she can do more than just staying alive, start to try and make a difference in the world, but it's an uphill battle to even get there mentally and takes some sacrifice to accomplish.

The OG protagonist is a big character, and he's honestly annoying for much of it and regularly sabotages MC's bid for stability. Doesn't have bad intentions, I guess? Runs on misunderstandings, and has a crush that mostly started because MC set her clothes on fire in an ability test, and continues because she does and says things without considering implications. So, yeah. He does get less intrusive and more protagonisty as time goes on, here's hoping it's not a romance subplot.

It's an interesting novel. The MC is transported into a novel and becomes a random character of the opposite gender. I'm not a fan of the genderbend genre, but we haven't seen the MC embrace being a female yet so it seems to be more of a plot device than a niche romance. The OML sees her as a female, but the MC doesn't seem to really see herself as a female so we haven't gotten a true genderbend plot, especially since the MC mostly interacts with female characters.

As far... more>> as the writing goes, the author does a good job at switching the POV between chapters and using it to help highlight that the MC is an unreliable narrator. The author does a good job at making a sympathetic MC and also creating a mysterious background both for the MC original life and the new body the MC is inhabiting because despite the MC having knowledge of the world, the character he is inhabiting seems to be a new one. The setting reminds me a bit of My Hero Academia because it's a school for superheroes. I think the good action and drama make this a good read and the minimal gender conflict makes this a mainstream read. <<less
