Magic.

It is a product of neither legends nor fairy tales, but instead has become a technology of reality since a time unknown to people.

Supernatural power became a technology systematized through magic, while magic became a technical skill. A “Supernatural Power User” became a “Magic Technician”.

Magic Technicians (in short, Magicians) are nurtured through Magic High Schools and Universities.

This is a story about:

A defective elder brother and low achiever.

A perfect, flawless younger sister and high achiever.

After both siblings entered a Magic High School,

The stage of daily turbulence was unveiled —.

I loved the anime that's why I really tried hard to find and complete the novel of this. Honestly it does not disappoint. In the anime the MC is a much like a robot and monotoned and this novel gave him more heart than what is shown in the anime. But then again it does link this his skill that's why he is like that. I felt like it was poorly paced though. The pacing was too slow in the middle that I felt bored and suddenly sped up and... more>> felt that the ending was too abrupt. It was great at first but became okay in the end. Still enjoyed reading it though part from the anime it was still okay. <<less

Interesting premise and detailed magic explaination.

OP MC, OP main duo, OP MC family... All set in here. 1st yr school life made a strong world building.

Character - has some cliche, but "understandable" personalities.

... more>> Plot - regular school drama, but with interesting new outlook. When it grows beyond, some expectations are not met and sometimes it drags the story. As such, plot progression is, in the range of 'not bad' or 'good', it depends.

Keystone in plot - class division based on elitism, discrimination in society, advantages and drawbacks of being OP, Terrorism or Rouge org, 9SC, some Geo-politics.... Etc

World setting - As like other novel with OP mc's, Here too, MC's mainland is protrayed exponential "powerful" than it's counter parts.... but given the premise of exploration..... Rather say, the world build is solid.

Bottom line: School life drama with Sci-fi magic and exploration of world setting with cliche moments and some strong themes. <<less

Honestly, reviewers before me have already described most of the good and bad points. So I will highlight some of the points that I found and weren't covered.

The novel is focused more on action than romance to the point that romance aspects can aptly said to be nil, if you ignore Miyuki's "Sasuga Onii-sama" and occasional blushing (which Tatsuya returns by his usual poker face with zero emotions completely killing the mood). Not only that, author constantly mentions that it is forbidden for magicians to engage in s*xual relationship. I... more>> understand if you mention it in first volume and maybe once or twice after that but why do I have to read it again and again after every one or two volumes? Author seems to constantly reminding readers about this but seriously nobody comes reading this novel for that kind of stuff. It looks like a pretty lame excuse that author constantly throws to hide his incompetency of being unable to write about romance (No wonder there is zero romance in story). Fanservice /= Romance but author is blissfully ignorant.

And lastly, the worst point in my opinion of any novel: Disappointing ending. Sadly, most of the novels that start with good beginning suffer from this and this novel is no exception.

Spoiler

After hyping Kudou Minoru as Tatsuya's biggest rival, the author failed to do justice to this rivalry. Everytime Tatsuya was just about to get him, plot armor would save Minoru and he would successfully getaway from Tatsuya every single time. And this stretched for nearly 10 volumes. This is the first time any villain of any arc in this novel managed to survive so long; all others were dealt within 1 or 2 volume.

And after needlessly and forcibly stretching this arc for 10 volumes, it decided to end in most unnatural way: Tatsuya who had been planning on killing Minoru finally confronts Minoru in last (32) volume and then instead of killing him, he puts him into sleep. WTH? If that's how it was going to end anyway what was the point of stretching this arc for so long? If in the end Tatsuya was going to put him to sleep what the hell was the point of dragging this fight? All other villains were killed without exception and this one gets a free pass after harming Miyuki so many times? Where's my hype for the exciting battle? I suspected this before and looks like I was right: The author hit the wall and had no ideas any more so he decided to stretch the arc on and on like a rubber band, and when the sales of his volumes fell to a record low, he decided to end his novel without proper conclusion.

Throughout the novel Maya prophesied many times and author also hinted that Tatsuya would end up fighting against the world if Miyuki was badly hurt and that Miyuki would be only one to stop him. The author built up this hype, Maya made Tatsuya Miyuki's fiancé for the sole purpose of Miyuki stopping him in such a scenario and then that scenario was thrown out of the window in last volume. After building up situation where USNA would end up attacking Tatsuya with full force and Tatsuya would retaliate, just one meeting in last volume and all this was thrown under the table as USNA suddenly (I dare say author forcibly) decided to forget the bad blood and novel ends (abruptly) on a happy note. Fantastic ending for a fairy tale novel with power of friendship theme. Sadly the genre of this novel is wrong.

[collapse]

Yotsuba Succession and Ten Master Clan Meeting arc is where the novel reaches its pinnacle, hyping up the interest of readers and throwing a plethora of future events but sadly it is all downhill after that with last volume being one of the worst ending volumes of any novel. Another good novel with potential marred by too much deviation from main idea and lame ending. <<less

Out of the 30 volumes, the first 22 - 23 are great. The last 8 is a mixed bag.

First and foremost - the fact that I give 5/5 despite the (imo) awful last part of the novel speaks a lot of how much I iked the first two third of the novel. I'm half-ranting there about the last third which is a complete disappointment ot me.

The last 8 break ouf of the "arc" format that the rest of the novel is. It's no longer really "one ar at a time"... more>> but more like several arc happen at the same time. This is actually great. Some very interesting plot point had been introduced and it's high time for the story to tackle them on fully instead of just going through them superficially as it was done in volume 1 - 20.

The problem is, the plot point that ends up having the highest focus is the most boring and nonsensical one: the parasites. Actually, everything else aside, just this one word, "parasite", can sum up all my dissatisfcation with this novel.

Kinda hard to explain what it is exactly without giving extensive spoiler and explanation on how the system work in this novel, but to keep it simple:

  • There is a strong magic system with clear defined rules. Parasite break those rules and ignore them because why not.
  • Parasites appear semi-randomly. While some explanation is given to justify their appearance, it is lacking in my opinion and it seems like the author is just forcing them in the story when new antagonists is needed, even though there are already other more interesting plot points to handle.
  • Linked to the previous point, parasites' objectives make no sense and are just forced by the author, since they don't have proper individuality.
Put in another words, parasite are convenient being that can appear randomly, that can have any objectives and that can have weird power that don't adhere to the usual rules of magic. In other words, they are the perfect plot device to randomly introduce strong antagonist to the protagonists. The real problem is, while doing this once is ok, by the third or fourth time of this happening, this gets really tiring and s*upid. To give an example (minimal spoiler) :

Spoiler

A bunch of strong magician in america get randomly turned into parasite and randomly get the objective to kill the protagonist, so they travel to japan to kill the protagonist. And while some explanation was given to make the whole thing more believable, ultimately it is basically what happens.

[collapse]

My biggest complaint really is that if the author used parasite to fill up the novel because there was nothing else to talk about, it would be sad but I could understand the reasoning. My problem is that the author introduce those despite the fact that he promised previously to focus on another plot point that was supposed to be the main focus of the novel, ie magic, society, the place of magician in society, anti-magician organisations as well as international conflicts in general (by promised previously I meant in author's note; he said he would focus on that kind of thing in this novel). Instead, all of those do happen, but kinda in the background, while the focus is spent on the boring parasites. <<less

It's hard to describe my feeling for Mahouka. 3/5 My fat finger press the wrong button

Spoiler

I don't like the OP of Tatsuya. I wish his power would just be one of the two, Destruction (Divergence) or Reverse. Due to this, Tatsuya can both heal and destroy the enemy, which robs away any struggle during the story.
Hence, the plot is quite boring. The sister, who sometimes shows a lot of individuality, but her feelings toward Tatsuya make her so submissive and make me expect no character development.

However, the world-building is fantastic, complex, and hook me every time. Also (judge me if you want), I quite like the in*est element, since the marriage objection from the magic society would make a good struggle. But then again, every struggle end so soon, if there is barely any.

All you need to know is that It's great. Just a pleasant read with amazing world building. Translations are on reddit. There are some themes that some people may not like but generally It's possible to ignore. I read some o bad reviews and I had to come back to say that this is one of the most popular and successful light novels in japan so most things are going to be technically good. If you're not used to reading books then reading this may be tiring. You may want... more>> to try anime instead (which is also good)
