All the novels Ive read, all the things that Ive seen.
All the novels Ive read, all the things that Ive seen.
A list of all the things I’ve read since I made a NU account. Most of them ended up being mid. If you want my recommendations, see my other list “The stuff you binge read all night”
What I tend to like: Strong Characterizations, Character relationships, good world building, excellent writing, great dialogue, realistic romancing (basically mature, not in hs anymore romance)
What I tend to dislike: Shounen (too formulaic and limiting on the stories they’ll tell), Harem (if not for realistic/fit into the story reasons), Romance where the reasons the characters like each other are unrealistic/wish fulfillment/s*upid (I’m looking at you, popular/hot/charismatic girl dates the wet mop of a child cause the plot needs to happen)
Current tropes I have beef with:
1. Girl was protected/saved/impressed once by wet noodle mc in early elementary school, so she’s obsessed with him in high school. Such a lazy plot device and it feels like every damn KOREAN/JP novel has some variation of this. These authors need to talk to real women instead of writing this elementary crap.

This has incredibly detailed worldbuilding with a lot of good horror and supernatural elements mixed in. It is very verbose, apparently due to CN->EN translation.... more>>

I liked pieces of this one but felt that the author didn’t juggle competing story priorities/growth well. Essentially, the author would focus on certain things in each arc to explain something or have character growth, and then never really integrate it into the story going forwards. It was frustrating because the bones were there for this story, it just wasn’t put together well.... more>>

Man, this one has the mojo. The ages are a bit weird (12) kinda similar to Eliza, but other than that it’s very cute with... more>>

The cuteness is a bit…. Forced. Characters are quite underdeveloped imo.

Terrible low effort garbage

It was ok. I don’t think it ever had proper narrative tension, but I did enjoy the overall framework of the story. That said, nothing... more>>

Hmm, setting aside a lot of novels I haven't read (like Ending Maker), I think this list has a pretty similar taste to mine (>90% if I am not misreading that "SL" is bad, "Kidnapped Dragons" is the best, etc.), though I disagree with a few things:
+ Referring to TNE as "crap." At least to me, the school arc is very interesting (the first 100 chapters). But I don't bother finishing the last 100 chapters. It's terrifying to watch it (which was my favorite at the time) crumble slowly but steadily.
+The Frozen Queen is annoying. Now, this is just my personal taste, so take no offense, but the only reason I am still reading that novel is because of hers. I am still vividly recall the chill of the knight training arc and the five senses training in the frozen queen's castle. She just grew on me, but, well, look how the novel goes now; I am scared to think about it.
@di2857295 eh, probably till the first battle between the hero and the second in command of demon army.
Btw, I read your review. You seem to have read from the raws. Did the mc die in the end?
@Raj121 spoilers below for anyone who cares

nah, it’s a harem ending.
If you only got to the fight between second in command you wouldn’t really see the reasons I call it hentai logic. The bits and pieces are being setup (and executed in Kania’s or second girl (blanking on name) who falls in love with him case)
@CapybarasOKIPULLUP please go read my actual review on the novel page. I think you’ll have an aneurism and then I can be rid of your random aggressive comments
@CapybarasOKIPULLUP do you understand differences of opinion? Unlike a lot of the people on this site I’m looking for good writing and characters, not just shounen stuff targeted for a YA audience.
My lists and comments exist for that crowd, since I clearly have a different set of standards and lenses through which I analyze and interpret. The people that think like me will appreciate it, and I appreciate people who write reviews that expose poor characterizations or writing because it saves me time.
You’re not going to change my mind on main heroines, especially with your childish outbursts. It had potential but very clearly squandered it and chose to exchange uniqueness and effort for tropes and easy outs. I wanted to like it, but poor writing made it impossible.
Very interesting. I've read close to all of these, aside from a couple of those feMC KR novels because they're just not built for my uncultured cumbrain.
If feasible, I'd like your input on a couple of these novels:
Second Life Ranker; FFF-Class tr*shero; Shura's Wrath; I Am the Fated Villain; Death Mage (you know the one... probably); remake of Running Away From the Hero; Legendary Moonlight Sculptor and Main Character Hides His Strength.
Based on my own understanding, they seem to all be some variant of shounen, but any potential pitfalls that a shounen may bring are offset by either strongly written characters, a smidgeon of effort put into the world-building or what usually prevails... very nice translations or a compelling style that leaves someone of my stature binging.
Cheers,
Sinikergsus
Hm, I’ve read SLR but it didn’t leave much of an impression on me. I dropped it a couple arcs in and I can’t remember any of the characters or the plot so I guess that tells you my thoughts on it.
tr*sh hero is satire on the shounen genre imo, just like the authors other works. Also just like the authors other works, the first 200-300 chapters are golden and then it gets long in the tooth.
I haven’t read the others you mentioned except glancing at The main character hides his strength (which doesn’t have a shounen tag btw) so I can’t really comment on the rest of your list.
