Pretty interesting novel up to this point. The main character is a prince trying his best to dispel a curse placed on him by a witch. I really like the setting: cursed royalty and powerful witches are a theme that reminds me of early fairy tales like Grimm's. Although I don't know what the author based the setting on, from my perspective it's a well made western setting and not like some RPG world.

Anyway, to cure the curse he goes to find the strongest witch, and so begins the story.... more>> To the complaint that the witch shouldn't follow along with the prince's request... Are you reading the same novel I am?

Specifically:

Spoiler

The witch goes along with him because:

  1. She is granting wishes to whoever can climb her tower and he does it.
  2. The prince is not some 'MC kiddo', he is 20, the strongest swordsman in his country and has a sword that cuts any magic.
  3. The witch is long-lived and probably immortal, so a year isn't a long time for her.

Honestly I think the other reviewer didn't actually read anything... did he review the synopsis?

[collapse]

The writing is high quality - you won't see boring paragraphs of exposition, instead it's mostly dialogue and imagery. The flow of the novel is good, and foundation for a sweet romance and conflict with a hidden enemy are being laid down. I'm looking forward to seeing where this story goes. <<less

I normally don't like reviewing a novel after only reading one chapter, but this novel infuriates me to the point where I want to leave a negative review to convey my annoyance. The hero is a presumptuous, narcissistic, misogynistic lust demon who pretty much embodies doing things their own way without giving a f*ck about others.

Spoiler

He wants to cure his impotence to leave a descendent for the future of the kingdom. However, he goes pretty much alone to a super dangerous dungeon with a supposedly volatile witch. Is there precedence for going alone? No! He's just so wrapped up in his own fantasies that he goes alone, disregarding the advice of his close friends for no real reason.

He meets said capricious witch, but she's a beauty. What does he do, after setting up the scenario that his life was ruined by a witch and that everyone is afraid of witches? He starts sexually harassing her, and when she maturely tries to divert the conversation, he powers through and keeps asking about her appearance, figure, and hobbies. She says that everyone calls her formally, but he just goes and starts calling her informally right off the bat. He clearly has no respect for her once he realizes that she's a hot woman, and his actions exude lust at every step.

The whole premise of the story is straight out of a yandere shoujo manga. "You're hot, become my bride for the purpose of having s*x with me." (note: not the other way around) "No thanks." "I'm going to blackmail you, guilt trip you, and chain you up until you agree to this." WTF?

I stumbled upon this through the manga and was curious about the novel so, fair warning about that. I'll likely be mixing since, so far, from what I read, there's not a whole lot of difference. Also fair, warning, I'll be using some examples, so spoiler warning. I'm not putting a whole lot in spoilers because it's pretty much going to be mostly all of chapter 1 with some mentions of chapter 2. Things beyond chapter 2, I'll put in spoiler tags. Also, caps used anywhere are for emphasis.

First, I... more>> came here to see what was going on. I'm not that into the story mostly because I feel that the author didn't give Tinaasha/Tinassha (however you spell it, it's different in manga and novel) enough of a justification to be standoffish to considering starting a relationship, yet decides to make a 1-year contract with him when even her familiar called her on the fact that there would be no difference between staying with him for 1 year versus 100. Also, I felt that, like many of these romance focused stories, the romance wasn't/isn't handled very well.

But with that said, all in all I wanted to write this review as sort of a rebuttal to the handful that claim the MC is either narcissistic or sexually harasses the Main Female Character (hereafter, MFC or I'll just use her name, Tinaasha as it's spelled in the manga) . In this sense, I think that YoriMei (#comment-217710) and mikkosep (#comment-183265) both give very balanced reviews in response to such vitriol as well.

Some claim that the MC has an illogical reason for going to the Azure/Blue Moon Witch's tower. However, as stated in the description, he was cursed by a witch when he was five and can't have children and carry on the lineage of his father. There's a bit more going on here than simply wanting to have a child as YoriMei pointed out. You can also see the implication in the description. He weilds a special sword that is like a deterrent to witches, but not only witches other magic users. Witches are not the only magic wielding threats in the world. So, if he can't carry on his lineage, as YoriMei, once again pointed out and why I said to check out their review, the sword falls useless and the world goes without the added protection against potential magic threats. So, his goal was not illogical or narcissistic to try to end his curse. Even if it was just to have a child, so what, that's part of the process of being human for like nearly everyone on the planet IRL, so why would it be different in a fantasy world? And how much more for leaders in a monarchy society who pass leadership through their descendants.

To further add to this, you learn later that the other reason he's the main descendant with royal blood is that there was a great deal of kidnappings going on in the kingdom. Even royal children. This happened around the same time he was cursed. Hard-foreshadowing that someone was out to destroy this kingdom.

Some want to get upset with him for propositioning her for marriage, but ignore all of her flippant ways of dealing with people. Yes, the familiar admitted she would still help people out if they don't make it up the tower, but she admitted that she'd mess with their minds and transfer them to a different place and that's why they never returned to their homes. On top of this, when she's trying to come up with a solution to his curse, she's looking for a woman who can handle the power in his body that would transfer to his child in the womb (which is the reason he can't have children). During this, she says there might be one or two women on the continent who can handle it. He's the one who asks what if it's a child or an elderly woman or a married woman. The only one of those three MFC, Taanisha feels is immoral, is the married woman, and rightfully so. The other two, an elderly woman, she feels she can fix with magic and tells him that he could just groom the child. I bring this up because the reviews up in arms about his actions toward her don't seem to say anything about that underlined part. Keep in mind this is all happening in chapter 1.

So, once again, let me remind you that according to this super powerful, ancient, experienced Witch, the MC's options for countering his curse/ward/protection/blessing is PROBABLY two women, assuming that they are within striking range and not married. That's a very small pool. So, also to remind you, the criteria is that the woman is powerful enough to handle the power within him. So, who's sitting in front of him? The strongest woman on the continent. So, MC rightfully, logically concludes that she should be an option. No, he doesn't force himself on her like some claim. He asks, "Ah, well, what about you?" and then goes on to ask whether she can withstand the power of the other witch and the MC points out that it should be decided if in fact he fulfilled the requirements of beating her tower game and she was supposed to offer him a wish, etc. He points out this is more of a certainty than searching for some random woman who might be able to handle the curse's power within him. Keep in mind that she set this entire system up herself, but I guess it never dawned on her that the winner of her game would ask for her hand in marriage. Something those claiming he did something wrong also seem to have forgotten.

At this point he puts her own words against her, specifically the one where she flippantly said she could make it work with an elderly woman with magic somehow. The only actual justificaiton she gives, and it's fine in reality, but for story telling purposes, it's not, is that she doesn't want to. Again, this is a centuries old woman, and that's the best she can come up with? When that doesn't work, as the description implies, she reminds him that witches and royalty are pretty much at war, and she's his enemy, and mixing their blood would probably destroy the kingdom and turn his leadershp against him. He says he doesn't care to which she returns to the argument that she's too old, again an argument he already rebutted based on her own previous words about flippantly fixing an older woman for him (likely making her young again with her powers) again ONLY IF SHE MET THE CRITERIA, which is a giant uncertainty.

Finally, when she sees that she can't convince him to go with her original plan and drop her from the potential list, she threatens to do to him what she's done to all of the other people who never returned from her tower. Again, recall everything I just said. He's the crown prince, the only son of his father due to a curse, witches and royalty are enemies, etc. What was the guy supposed to do? He reacts to the threat with his own threat, which is the aforementioned special sword. This is not a threat to get her into marriage as some people upset with the manga said elsewhere. Tinaasha literally stands up and holds her hand at him, magic forming in it. That's the equivalent of someone brandishing a gun at you. So, MC reacts accordingly and brandishes his own gun. In the novel, it gives more detail, saying he didn't take a serious stance, but the fact he took out the sword made her pause and pretty much got an attitude BECAUSE SHE COULDN'T GET HER WAY AND JUST MANIPULATE HIM. (Recall a reviewer calling him a man-child because he couldn't get his way with her, but here they give her a free pass?)

At this point, MC modifies his request that she live with him in the palace for 1 year (obviously with the intention of trying to win her over.) Which, of course, he starts to do almost immediately, trying to win her over. Not sure what some of these people expected, it's clearly a romance where the male character is meant to chase the female character and drop silly lines and be assertive in trying to win her affection. But of course, we live in an era where people don't think that's how men and women should get involved with each other and assertive men are sexually harassing the women just by, maybe saying that she looks beautiful or something. Most of MC's advances are verbal, often challenging her reasoning (or lack thereof) for rejecting him. I guess since we live in this era where if a man doesn't stop at the first "no" a woman gives, then that's s*xual harassment to some people. Still, any physical advances he makes towards her, she doesn't fight him.
Spoiler

For example, in chapter 6, he sits her on his lap and she doesn't even argue about it. Aside from making a face about it, likely being stubborn about their budding romance, she doesn't get off his lap and lets him run his fingers through her hair while they talk. She doesn't get off his lap until he touches her neck and it tickles her.

[collapse]

I mean if that was the case, nearly all of male and female relationships in the world wouldn't have happened because almost often every woman says "no" the first time. Sometimes, just because she wants to go through the chase. And this isn't just me saying this. This comes from them, time, and experience. Also, I've been married for 20+ years so I have some experience with this.

Also, I've read skimmed this up to chapter 12 now. There's nowhere that he ties her up within those chapters becauses he's jealous and forces her to relive her bad memories. Not sure what Tsalnor, below me as I write this, is talking about on that one. Perhaps it happens at a later point in the story and I'm sure it's likely taken out of context if it does.

There's a part where HE'S DRUGGED with a drug that is designed to make him lose all reason and the MC tries his hardest to control himself while telling her to get away from him but she doesn't listen because she suspect his drink was poisoned with something. That's bout the only part of the story (up to where I read in the manga, at least, but a reviewer said it happens the same in the novel) where he actually forces himself on her and he's not in control of himself. A mage drugged him.

To continue that these individuals ignore some of Taanisha's faults:
Spoiler

We get an entire arc where MC and his best friend/servant Razel/Razar meets a nature Witch who puts a spell on MC that drains his lifeforce in his sleep by giving him an erot*c dream each night. It takes Taanisha a while to figure it out because MC orders his servant not to tell Taanisha about the meeting. When Taanisha finds out about the spell, she informs MC that it usually takes a week to kill the person and manages to break the spell. Let me remind you, it was a spell that would have killed him within a week had she not broken it. So, what does she do after this, she goes to the witch and they have a drink because they're friends and the witch was playing a prank and wanted to say hello to Taanisha. Oh, but she did that with a spell that would kill him had Taanisha not figured it out. She's supposedly mad, but she has a drink with her, because she's her friend? A friend who tried to kill the Crown Prince? Also, during this conversation she learns from her friend that she collected s**en and blood samples from MC to create an artificial life? Think about the implications of this. How did she get the blood sample and s**en most of all? Neither was with his consent. Oh, but it's okay because the witch gave them to her since she didn't want to get them herself to analyze MC's curse. I'm not saying Taanisha did anything directly, but it's all meant to be okay because said witch starts helping her try to break MC's curse and she's her friend.

[collapse]

All in all, I gave it 3 stars because like I said, as usual with romance stories, the chase doesn't seem to be well thought out enough to draw me in. I like stories where there are powerful women and somewhat, but not always powerful men involved in relationships. So, it drew me in with that premise initially. As I said, what I wasn't feeling was her lack of reasoning. Oh, the author does seem to give her one later, but immediately takes it away and then gives her the age old one for quasi-immortal characters, they don't like to see loved one's die, but doesn't seem to be serious about that.
Spoiler

Later, the author seems to settle on the argument that witches and subjigators, of which MC is one, are mortal enemies and shouldn't be friends and definitely not lovers, but again, of course because of what the story is, doesn't seem to really emphasize that from Taanisha's point of view, else she wouldn't have agreed to the contract, nor would she have been friendly with MC's grandfather.

[collapse]
I also didn't like the fact she was locked in a tower like an angsty teenager, making near-edgelord statements about "humanity" and "power" and all of that. I get it, however, I just found it cliche, unoriginal, but not bad. It's likely a story I'll forget about until I stumble upon it again and remember what it's about somewhere down the line. There's other things I could complain about like, she's centuries old, but the author chose to make her look like a 17 year old. What's with manga's and overly young looking characters? The author could have easily made her appear older. This is the same problem I had with Dance in the Vampire Bund. Absolutley no reason to make the character look that young other than appealing to the lolicon fanbase.
Spoiler

Thankfully this changes and she ages to about 20ish after fighting a demonic/magical beast.

Tldr if you value good foreshadowing, you may not like the book as much. If you would just read and finish, it could be a interesting story.

I completed the raw of act 1 and skimed through act 2 and roughly the rest of the book. Act 1 was not bad but act 2 onwards were a tad disappointing.

Start was good. Not a no brain harem nor no brain fluff. Had potential to be a great story. However, things got weird when act 2 comes in.

The build up to act 2... more>> was not there I would say. Almost seemed like the sole reason of act 2 happening was just because the witch misplaced a magic object while that's not supposed to be the case. Basically it's not foreshadowed enough. And sadly it kinda ruins the book because that under-foreshadowed plot device is the key to the book title and the whole story. Then I skimmed through act 2 quickly and read some side stories just to get a hang of the ending coz I was sensing danger.

It was the side story that really turned me off lmao. To make it brief, it's basically not the usual aftermath side story in a romance which should've been happy ever after or 'whats the other character doing'. It's the thing that made me decided to not go back and finish act 2 and the rest of the book. It was not tragedy but I hoped it was. A tragedy is better than what the author gave me imo. Felt like author intended to make life difficult idk.

Long unorganized rant incoming:

Spoiler

The witch and the prince (now king) got married. Then witch found herself to be near death so she left with a letter, telling prince that she's dying soon and please move on.

So the King moved on and got a concubine to produce a heir for the country. So the king and the concubine's kid was borned.

Here comes the twist:

Wow the witch was actually alive and pregnant and came back 5 years later! She and the king had a baby, a heir! What about the concubine? Just lived like a ghost in the palace and she was content with that after knowing the witch was back knowing the love between the kind and witch is strong (wtf). And I didn't know if the author wrote about the relationship between the concubine's kid and the concubine. I certainly didn't reach that part if there was one.

Here comes the rant: why are you doing this to me author? You wrote the love between the witch and the king to be as if it's the greatest love in the world. And after the witch just left the country, the king would not try to find her? Would he not want to see her during her last moments? Or just make more memories? What about the concubine and her relationship with her kid? See all this thing did not seem to be explained. And side story lmao, usually a place for joy and comfort after the main story is done, author decided to make life miserable for both readers and the characters. The side story itself has potential to be another full-fledged drama lmao.

[collapse]

Thing is, I'm fine with tragedy and if author decided to give a good one, cool. But this is like author wanted to write a tragedy but suddenly changed mind, without rethinking how the awkwardly placed parts go together. It didn't make me feel happy nor sad, it made me rage lol. <<less

Male lead is a narcissistic piece of sh*t who thinks he can get whatever he wants through sheer force. There are multiple times where the male lead does something irredeemable and nothing happens as a consequence. The female lead is a pushover that just forgives him after getting only slightly angry or upset.

The romance is unbelievably forced. There's no actual reason for the male lead to fall in love with the female lead other than her good looks. There's literally no reason for the female lead to fall in love... more>> with the male lead, as he is a man-child who throws a tantrum every time she doesn't show him attention. And yet they somehow fall in love. Ridiculous. Why does she stick with him, when he refuses to listen to anything she says and treats her like some kind of object? (Another review says she promised to stay with him for a year. You do understand that she is one of the strongest beings in this world and is under no real obligation to do this, right? She only promised this because he straight up threatened her with his OP sword. She could have chosen to f*ck off many times throughout the story and there would be nothing he could do. Instead she chooses to train him and make him even stronger. Right. Okay.)

His narcissism culminates in a moment where, in a fit of jealousy, he ties her down and magically restrains her in a manner that resembles s*xual assault (pretty clearly intentionally by the author, like, what the f*ck is the line he says while doing this?). And then how does the female lead act? Does she actually do anything? No. After being forced to remember a traumatic experience, she gets over it in one second when he... touches her face. Wow. Real convincing portrayal of love. Am I supposed to believe this piece of sh*t actually feels remorse for this? Oh, and guess what? The magical restraints end up putting them in further danger. That definitely makes me want to like the male lead. What the f*ck was the author thinking?

There are many other aspects of this story that are interesting and I would probably read more if the male lead wasn't such garbage. But it's very hard for me to stick with this when I hate the male lead so god damn much. <<less

I just finished reading volume one, I was kind of excited for this because I heard some great things before it was out in print and the synopsis seems to be up my alley. I like romance and fantasy, especially if the romance part is something unique and can draw you in, even if the fantasy elements becomes overshadowed. So I came to read it with high expectations.

The story telling was good but I expected it draw me in, probably my expectations coming in were too high that I feel... more>> that the story was a pretty standard one. The premise was unique, however as you read further so many parts come out as predictable, though predictability is not necessarily a bad thing but coming in with high expectations will probably get in the way of your enjoyment.

The romance which I was actually anticipating for was quite different from a lot of popular light novels, where there are a lot of harems, indecisiveness and some tropes present, at least in here we already know from the beginning that this would end differently. The characters have some nice conversations every now and then, with other person being overly obvious/open in expressing feelings to the other. Yes, its approach to romance it a little different from most but nothing out of the ordinary, it's not bad but I wouldn't call it good either. Even after reading through the first volume I feel that if you come reading expecting to be blown away, you'll find the romance part lackluster, it's better to curb some expectations before reading it so you would have a better time than progressing with the story at least compared to me.

The fantasy elements is as common as it can get, though it may not be exactly a carbon copy of an existing fantasy setting but many elements are something that you might've come across from reading other fantasy themed light novels, but don't get me wrong, the story itself does flow well and the premise is unique, for volume 1 specifically, it's a little better than average but not by a long shot, there might be some plot points that get's unveiled in the future that would make the it interesting but I would probably have to put the next volume on lower end of my reading priorities. <<less

Unnamed Memory *could* have been good, but alas it did not

The major problem with Unnamed Memory, is its chronic lack of structure. There's nothing binding the current chapter with the next other than the fact that there exists 2 people: hero and heroine.

This novel presents itself as a standard novel with linear, if not clear, progression. Within 2 chapters it fell apart by the seams and adopt episodic approach not unlike a TV series where you have a start and an ending, but everything in between is a free for... more>> all of what story sounds most appealing right now

The story begins with Prince Oscar climbing a Witch's tower in an attempt to break his curse. Instead he was enamored with her and asks for her hand and she refused. He got one year to change her mind. Simple right? You'll get an entire year's worth of fluffy romance and they grow closer by the day

But that is not what you get. Instead, both of them are close from the get go, perhaps due to their amiable personalities. What you do get, is semi-detective-adventure episodic format with a clearly defined Baddie Of The Week but nothing whatsoever to help define where they are in the relationship progression bar. As a matter of fact, one can hardly claim there's a progression: the heroine is already so comfortable with the hero she lets him grope her. This is not my observation, an in-novel character actually pointed that out to her

Now, it's not that episodic format is bad, after all detective series use that all the time. The problem here is that this novel sets you up with an expectation and then shatters it. The episodes are so dijointed that you can rearrange them completely in reverse and they'd still make sense timeline wise. In some ways, this is like reading an oddly ecchi fantasy version of Case Closed where there's some sort of overarching "end game" plot that the series try to progress towards and some episodes actually do that, but overall the normal episodes have nothing to do with the others

That's a big hard pass from me. If they want to make things episodic then they should've gone with that instead of arbitrarily placing a time restriction and basically forgetting about it.

Considering the gravity of said curse and the time limit, you'd think they'd put some sort of importance to it, but you don't feel any sort of tension throughout the story relating to that, which is just super weird. I don't feel like wanting to know more, because the next chapter can be about anything and it doesn't really progress the story

As a matter of fact, that curse thing matters so little, the progression to break it is only mentioned offhandedly like "I'm working on it" and "it's almost done" <<less

Literally made an account to express how much I hate this MC. Dude literally feels like that guy at the club trying to flirt with girls and saying "you'll be mine, you just don't know it yet".

And sure he definitely does have valid reasons for it, like the racoon pfp reviewer explained. Doesn't make him any less of an annoying, arrogant, creepy, disrespectful as*hole saying things akin to "haha this girl will be mine, it's only a matter of time".

Feels like the male equivalent of the tropey anime girls weebs... more>> (guilty of this myself, ngl) gush over, which would be a massive pain in the ass to deal with irl, but hey sounds "dreamy" when it's just a novel character.

And while he would make a good anime villain, whose crushing fall would be most satisfying to watch, realizing that by virtue of being MC he most likely gets his way by the end of the novel, while not being a masochist myself makes for an easy drop. <<less

It's not really to my tastes hence the 3 stars but it's honestly pretty innocuous. The plot truly is the typical "cursed prince climbs tower, brings back powerful but secretly lonely witch with him, people try to kill them, they fight, they fall in love, the end", and while not very original it's pretty soothing in that it wont pull any surprise punches whilst not being 100% fluff either. The writing is a bit boring for me because the pacing just moves too fast for anything to have real weight.... more>> For example in the first book, the witch faces off against this big monster that could ruin an entire kingdom; but the fight literally starts and ends in one chapter. A long chapter, true, but still just one chapter.

Characterization, MC and ML are both OP. She's the strongest witch in the mainland, he's the super OP prince who can handle anything and has never lost a fight. They banter a bit, which is pretty cute but the author just moves too fast so it moves from "this girl is interesting and I want to help her cuz she seems a bit lonely" to "I totally love her" in the span of a few long chapters. To be frank I'm shocked at the vitriol in the other review because uh:

Spoiler

As the other reviewer said, he climbed the tower for a chance to fulfill a wish and his wish was to cure his impotency, which she couldn't do immediately and thus he then wished for her to follow him for a year, he doesn't guilt her or blackmail her. He's also not some super lusty horn-dog, he's the only remaining prince to a whole kingdom that also has an anti-magic sword that is inherited via bloodline. It's literally not only his duty to make an heir but if he dies without having any children, the anti-magic sword that could be the only thing that can stop the five very much alive witches that still roam the world will be rendered unusable. He only starts propositioning marriage to her because his curse would kill any woman he imp**gnated unless she could bear the magical strain of the curse. Very few can, but you know who could? A witch. Like the one in front of him. He's very flippant and care-free, but I fail to see anything even regarding yandere, lust, or misogyny. He does force some kisses on her later on, but he's also drugged with an aphrodisiac and tells her to leave him alone which she does not listen to.

[collapse]

While I don't think I would read anymore, it's not a terrible story. The premise is interesting as there is some mystery about MC's past and if you're looking for a good ole witch x prince type story, do give this one a shot. <<less

Problem is that right from the start there is a bunch of cliche and illogical moments. It's a bit too much for just one chapter.

Another point I don't like (also illogical cliche by the way) is when some super powerful people with a lot of experience are just following what some MC kiddo has said. Imagine some random Russian teenager comes to Bill Gates and says 'hey grandpa! Forget about all you have, people, house, hobbies, work and join me in my travel to China'. And that's basically how story... more>> starts

You want more?

In first chapter you will see: Loli-baba virg*n (95%), OP protagonist, overcalm protagonist, 20 years old virg*n (95%), pathetic friend character, bad parents, OP ancestor and other crap. Remind you - it's O N E chapter <<less

The story was decently engaging and had no harem - which I like. I didn't find myself skipping through pages like in other light novels. The characters are decent, although a bit cliché. I would characterize the king as a kind of arrogant guy, who puts his (romantic) interests first and is a bit intrusive/pushy. And the FL is a typical case of being smart, but somehow not realizing her feelings for the MC.

However, (watch out, spoilers ahead)

There is time regression happening throughout the story. While that could have been a good idea, it happened way too often and for me atleast (with my peanut sized brain) and it was annoying to keep in memory what timelines existed and what happened in them. Evering that happened before the first time especially felt worthless to me because of that.

And partiularly the first-time rollback makes no sense to me. They were married and moving stuff from the tower to the castle, and Oscar accitentally came in contact with an orb. Tinasha surely knew of the dangers of the orbs, so why take the chance that oscar gets in contact with one???

So all in all it's a decent read if you like fantasy, no harem, and romance, but the story has its flaws and be prepared to get confused about (redacted bc of spoilers)

I've read up to the 3rd volume (yall please purchase the legal copies) and this is one of my favorite novels so far. I just love the interactions between oscar and tinasha where they start arguments over the smallest stuff. It gets better when in the 3rd volume
Spoiler

she finally realizes she's in love woth oscar but she sort of had a brain fart and didn't know how to process it
