Transcending into a World of Magic

Matthew found himself in a game world, but it seemed like his system had a little hiccup.

“Class: Necromancer
Mission: Plant Trees
Objective: 1000 trees
Rewards: Summon ‘Bone Dragon’ & a ton of EXP.”

And just like that, a Necromancer who revered balance more than any Druid was born.

Rating this book is somewhat hard. Story wise, in terms of plot, it's branching and general stuff like sequencing or flow it's actually pretty good story. To a point where I could almost call it "real" literature, not just web novel -tier stuff. But as you can probably see from the score, that's not how it ends up being for me.

As for rating the usual building blocks (levels of world building, characters & their growth.. Etc.) I'm not that interested. But here's something that's caught my attention:

I don't really know... more>> if its due to something being lost in the translation, which is basically edited MTL that already makes it very 'stale' in terms of readability, or something else (which I myself believe to be more correct), such as some quirk of the author, but the story is very.. Weird and illogical on certain parts. Both may be part of the reason, I suppose.

Thinking back, it's not even the big things that bother me. It's just that there are like thousands of small things that are really odd and inconsistent to already established tone and traits of the book (more specifically the characters, their actions and reactions to stimuli). I would say these are MOSTLY things that are masked as being part of the humor in the book, but are really just unnatural and off putting. Best I can describe it is that for me it feels like there was something in the book, but it got removed and replaced by something else that didn't quite fit as well.

Trying to put this rating into words turned out to be a lot harder task than I initially though so I'm just going to stop here lol. In the end I gave it a fair 3 stars, which in my books is quantified as "worthy of reading" so that's where we'll land. Give it a go and see how you feel. <<less

Thus far a fun read, author is testing a mixup on the necromancer formula by mixing in Druid of all things.

Result? Enviromental activist who goes around with an undead killsquad against arsonists and others that threaten his plantation.

All while living as a morally outstanding citizen in the local town, much to the great confusion for most people who found out. Minus a few happy profiteers in.... law enforcement. Just ask the dead victims who the criminals are!😅

The worst part about the novel is the translation, it’s obviously an MTL and apparently doesn’t have an editor. With this translations you will have the same character given 3 different names in a single chapter.

Besides that, you get a lot of repeated lines and even some repeated paragraphs. When I say ‘repeated’ I mean it’s exactly word-for-word the same. What I think happened is the MTL copied the ‘watermarks’ that some authors put in to stop others from effortlessly stealing their webnovels.

The story itself is fine, MC is likable... more>> even though Necromancer+Druid don’t make any sense (he’s a true raising-the-dead plague spreading Necromancer, not just some priest who helps souls be put to rest) but despite him having a nonsense power it’s still a good enough read. <<less

The story and the characters are pretty average. There aren't any particular standouts or even any trait that makes any character memorable. They are just there. Doesn't help with how many characters the author keeps on introducing. Was reading from chapter 1 to chapter 174 in one go, so I remember most of the characters but if I was waiting a day for each chapter, I doubt I would remember even half of them. The main character itself is pretty bland.

The story line also seems to be a bit hit... more>> and miss. There are some interesting concepts, but it feels like they aren't fully explored. Also doesn't help with how much exposition there is. A lot of the times you just want the author to get to the point.

The story isn't slice of life, but rather more of a dark fantasy. The world is heading to towards warfare with a lot of strong characters who are very morally ambiguous. The author doesn't get much into it but from the tidbits you can get an idea of how much life or values are valued in that world. The summary mentions how much the MC likes planting trees, and the story does mention that but it is not the focus.

Spoiler

MC, early on, starts focusing on combining nature and death into one domain (called balance).

The main issue though, is the translation. Personally, I don't mind reading machine translation, but that is not the biggest issue. The translation is plagued with missing paragraphs. Initially I thought that story just keeps on jumping but after reading on other sites, I realized its just the translation. Also the "next chapter" button on the translator site is broken. Doesn't work half the time. Also, the machine translation is somehow worse than the ones you can find on famous machine translation sites. 90% of the time, the female character name defaults to Peggy (it is not present in other sites for the same novel) and even the male character names keeps on changing (not David being called Dave, but rather David, Steve and John all getting their names interchanged randomly (not consistent per scene either) and half the time defaulting to say, "Richard"). Would honestly recommend just going to a machine translation site to read this novel. You will get less headaches. <<less

Not bad, but is not good either.

The fights are poorly written. They have no flavour (at least to me). They don't expose any sense of danger or excitement or any other feeling. It feels just like a job, no, a report. There are so many instances where the protagonist is in danger, but there is no feeling of danger transmitted.

The power system is all over the place. It can be summarized as Levels or Tiers. The author does a poor job at describing how powerful each Tier is. All you... more>> know is that the protagonist, that is at Tier 2, killed someone at Tier 4. Wow... so exciting... there is no sense of achievement as I can't even understand the struggle challenging someone that is supposed to be so much stronger in this story. The author also tries to implement ranks (such as elite, lord etc.), yet again, there is no sense of scale.

There is no end objective. No becoming the strongest, no becoming rich, no creating the strongest undead, no taking over the world, no nothing. The protagonist just lives life and does system quests. I mean, that would be ok if the novel was tagged as slice-of-life, but it isn't.

You can consider romance non-existent up to chapter 183. There are signs of slow build up, but nothing serious.

Honestly, if the author removed the combat scenes, the story would be better. The narrative is interesting enough not to get you bored. I mean, the main part of the story is mostly about the protagonist going though a philosophical journey about the equilibrium between life and death, represented by the professions of druid and necromancer. Which, is an interesting take.

Of course, there might be some conflict with things you believe in already and what the author says. So, don't expect for the author to always be right as it feels that even the author has no idea what he is saying sometimes. <<less

So the concept of a necromancer/druid is interesting until the protagonist starts trying to go into philosophy about how necromancy and druidry can mix. In spoilers because people who would just skip over philosophical ramblings might enjoy the story less:

Spoiler

Undeath is not, cannot be, a part of nature. It specifically goes against the natural cycle. The dead are supposed to make new space for the living and provide nourishment and resources for them. Undead break that cycle by continuing to survive by taking nourishment from the living (In the case of Matthew's summons, they take his mana and maybe some other resources he has to gather). While individuals might be able to force undeath and nature to coexist, it's not natural and will inevitably fall apart without guidance from the individuals.

... And I let it pass when the protagonist said it because he bullshits a lot, but if a druid doesn't immediately recognize it as bullsh*t and call him out on it, and even says "well, I knew someone who was trying to wield both life and death powers together" as if that's the same thing as nature and undeath, I question the author's understanding of the forces he's trying to fuse.

[collapse]

And once I got past that initial interest in how the protagonist would deal with the opposing forces, I noticed the novel was mostly just exposition upon exposition. It's not like nothing has happened, but it would be one line of action sandwiched inside many lines of background information. I gave it a 2/5 because the novel at least is what it said it would be... <<less
