Rong Tang has read a book.

The villain Su Huaijing in the book is the arrogant son of heaven, a typical representative of beauty, strength and misery, and a high-IQ villain character with a high level of revenge. Unfortunately, the character collapsed and did not end well.

As a result, after traveling through time, Rong Tang became the cannon fodder of the sick rice seedling with the same name and surname that died early in the article, and was also bound to a system to save the male protagonist, and was reborn three times in total.

The first time, he followed the hero with all his heart, helping him avoid various cannon fodder and the villain’s schemes, but was poisoned to death and his mission failed;

The second time, he went in parallel, assisting the male protagonist while contacting the villain, but was stabbed to death by the male protagonist with one sword, and the mission failed;

The third time he was reborn, Rong Tang thought, screw the male protagonist, Laozi won’t save him.

So the night the villain Su Huaijing was drugged and tied up, Rong Tang, who was about to cough up tuberculosis, broke into the room of the brothel, cured him of the drug, and asked seriously: “Do you want to marry me?”

Su Huaijing: “?”

Rong Tang, suffering from a serious illness and difficult to treat, accompanied Su Huaijing all the way, muttering to him every now and then: “Don’t worry, when I die, the inheritance will be all yours.”

Until the overall situation was determined and Su Huaijing ascended the throne, the mission was miraculously announced to be completed.

Surprised, Rong Tang fled to death without any psychological burden in order to preserve the emperor’s reputation.

As a result, before he left the capital, all the emperor’s guards pressed on, falcons circled in the air, wolfhounds drooled from their mouths, officials knelt on both sides, and the little donkey Rong Tang bought along the way sneezed in fear. The emperor, dressed in a bright yellow crown robe, walked from behind the crowd with a smile, looking at him and asking him gently: “Husband, are you going to abandon your wife and son until you are in chaos?”

Rong Tang: “?”

Can you give birth?

Ah no! Is it appropriate for one of you to substitute into the wife role like this above!?

The emperor walked up to him, raised his head and hands, and smiled: “Come back with me, you will be half of the world.”

  -

  Small Theater:

On a certain day of a certain month in a certain year, Rong Tang finished his evening meal and lay in the yard to cool off. As usual, he planned with Su Huaijing.

“I only have about two years to live, then remember to take back Longxi Zhuangzi——”

Su Huaijing filled a bowl of bitter medicine into his mouth expressionlessly.

Another year, month and day, after reading the script, Rong Tang curled up in front of the brazier to keep warm and said goodbye to Su Huaijing seriously.

“I shouldn’t have two months to live. If you think that house in the west of the city is too small, I’ll buy one for you in the south of the city.——”

Su Huaijing gritted his teeth and fed him three fist-sized pills.

Another year, month and day, the lotus flowers in the Imperial Garden were in full bloom, and Rong Tang sat by the bridge eating lotus cakes.

“I might die tomorrow, remember to bury me——”

Su Huaijing couldn’t stand it anymore and leaned over to block his mouth.

After a moment, the emperor, whose joy and anger were not in full swing, slowly retreated and looked at his queen: “Did I not tell you that I am the best official in Dayu?”

“If you say that again, I’ll treat you like a doctor. ”

You and I share this world, and you and I share this mountain and river.

Here’s the thing - I’m not a huge fan of the "sick beauty" trope, I don’t really like transmigration, and I find that most so-called “political” historical novels barely resemble actual political scheming.

I binged this book.

The author is very talented. They took an extremely tropey premise and somehow made it feel fresh again by making the reader fall in love with the sentimentality and romance of it all.

I was captivated by everything: the small poetic descriptions, the character interactions, the parallels between past and present lives. Mind you, there actually... more>> isn’t that much happening plot-wise, and the pacing is fairly slow — but you become completely enthralled by the characters and the way they gradually change each other.

I loved watching Su Huajin slowly become enamored. I loved seeing Rong Tang change after finally experiencing passion and attachment. And Ke Hangxue melting his senior’s heart was just wonderful to read.

This is really a novel you read for the characters, their emotional development, and the atmosphere. Just sink into it and enjoy. <<less

Absolute gem of a novel like everyone said. The title would not make you think that this novel is so beautifully written, intricate and packed with so mysteries, twists, political intrigue and just brilliant scheming characters! I truly wasn't expecting this and I'm glad I was able to read it fully translated, otherwise I would've had even more trouble keeping track of all the nuances that was happening with the different prince factions and family relationships. I had to write a list of all the characters that popped... more>> up so I could fully understand the different motivations happening.

But enough about that!! Our couple!!! Both wickedly intelligent, but while our MC Rong Tang stays out of politics this life because he's tired from the first 2 runs (and this absolutely makes sense after what he's been through), our ML Su Huaijing is obviously in the thick of it. We do miss a lot of the direct action scenes since we follow Rong Tang and I would've loved to see the actual battles between Su Huaijing and the emperor. But there's still sooo much that happens throughout every chapter and we do hear a recap about it from Su Huaijing.

I adore our couple's romantic relationship - our MC who wants the best for the ML in this third life because Rong Tang was never able to explore their connection due to being on opposing sides. Now Rong Tang is doing what he wants and trying to give the best for the ML because of the ML's tragic past.

If I had to describe their couple dynamic, Su Huaijing starts off as a suspicious wolf and then slowly falls for Rong Tang's pure kindness towards him. He eventually turns into a teasing wife in front of Rong Tang, quick to play the pitiful card in front of his Tangtang gege because he knows that's what makes Rong Tang fold. While Rong Tang is quick to fold for Su Huaijing's words, he's just as quick to get angry in embarrassment and kick the ML out of bed if he goes too far. The few times Rong Tang will be super affectionate is when he thinks he's about to die, and then he turns into a playful tease. I absolutely love them!!! Also while the bed scenes have that fade to black, the actions are definitely stated more explicitly compared to other - so there's no flowery metaphors you have to parse through!

We also have a second couple whose happy ending takes 10+ years to get there because of tragic plot reasons.

I'm really happy that our ML gets his happy ending. Major spoilers ahead:
Spoiler

We learn that Mu Jingxu is actually his san ge/the Third Prince. While their Crown Prince gege died, his wife was able to give birth to a son, Yuanyuan. And we find out at the end that Master Huiman is their er ge/the Second Prince. Su Huaijing was able to gain some of his family connections instead of losing them all.

[collapse]

This is such a unique take on the transmigration plot and things do get explained at the very end! Major end spoiler ahead:

Spoiler

It's revealed that Rong Tang was brought from his world into this novel world by the World Consciousness of the OG novel in order to prevent ML from destroying all of Dayu in his revenge. Rong Tang is supposed to act as the Heavenly Way and that's why he had those system cheats before in his past 2 lives. However the new Heavenly Way replaced Rong Tang and wants to usurp power by having the protagonist win finally win instead. So Rong Tang forgot his original mission and was given falsified info by the new Heavenly Way.

5/5 stars! I really can't believe I held back on reading this for so damn longgg!!! This was so good!

This one doesn't necessarily have any revolutionary new ideas, but the strongest point in this novel is the way the author navigates and explores the emotions of characters and their interconnections between 3 lifetimes. Quick summary, MC transmigrates into a sickly character in a novel where a system gives him missions to help the og protagonist become the emperor. The first time, he dies from poison and he's brought back to... more>> life to restart his mission and try again. The second life the og protag kills him due to our MC associating with the novel's villain. And in the third life in which this novel follows, MC is resolute to live the life of a salted-fish while making sure the villain doesn't destroy the world in the end.

Because of MC being terminally ill and the villain being a doctor, there's a bit of angst that continuously comes up. Usually MC will try to remind villain continuously that he doesn't have long to live, so when he dies, for villain to do xyz. The author does such a great job in giving the reader heartache in the most subtle of ways that it slowly marinates the heart until a certain climatic moment where you finally realize you've been stabbed by a knife and can't even complain because as a reader, you should've already knew it was going to happen.

Since the MC is the narrator, although it does go through the complicated politics/relationships, we never get bored to death from the political jargon. The balance tips more towards slice-of-life, but it isn't slow either. In my opinion, the author shows great understanding in this area, knowing when to push and pull the plot along without feeling too hasty nor too slow. I didn't even realize this novel was 170+ chapters I just somehow felt in my heart that the end could use some more meat on the bones lol.

MC and ML character growths were executed so well! I especially loved that the one thing that doesn't change about our MC is his moral stance. Standing beside the wronged villain, he knows and understands that death and killing is inevitable. Though he also doesn't wish for the common people to suffer cruelly and unnecessarily especially if it's due to those in power. ML also understands this and without even knowing, slowly MC guides the villain's mind and heart to give up destroying the world. To me, these type of characters are always a hit or miss because it is entirely dependent on how much care and thought the author puts into the story to make them consistent and cohesive in the world setting. A lot of the times, authors will write this amazing type of character only to turn them into an annoying love-brain that loses their ability to THINK. Even with the MC and ML having their little love-brain moments, it never compromises the foundations of their personality, strengths, and beliefs. This is so important to me!!!!

Also, I especially loved some of the side characters, especially Ke Hongxue. Although they're not so much there at the end, I'm just glad they get their happy ending.

Overall, the story progresses so well. Even though the plot twist (?) reveal did feel like we needed a bit more to it, I think it's still pretty good. The journey to get there made it make sense. I used the asiannovel site since I guess it's an edited mtl version and not too bad, but 10/10 will read again once more chapters are translated. I could totally see this novel becoming one of those that we (hopefully) are fortunate enough to get physical english copy releases in the future!! <<less

I don't know the reason for the low rating. But this is a very good novel.

It is a somewhat redemption story for MC and ML. Majority of the scenes are slice of life and interactions bet the main chara's. You'll also be fed with lots of dog food, and I don't mind choking XD since it's very relaxing reading the story. Lastly, I love the depth of the convo among the characters. Despite being a slice of life, this is the only novel that doesn't make me feel bored. However,... more>> I'm not sure for others so u may skip this novel if u'r into a fast-paced and face - slapping.

Downside - Anticlimactic but satisfying ending. More on narrative during the turning point of events. Also, MC is a salted fish so in the latter part he always lets the ML to have his way with him and is very dependent on ML. <<less

Hands down to the best poetic romance story I have read this year.

tbh I was a bit sceptical to read story that the MC is sickly and might be too s*upid to just follow the original plot or maybe the system's command.

but then thisssss is a whole another level. I mean like the MC is surely sick but not weak! He has his own ideas and know when to step forward when in need.

i would totally recommend this book. I mean the amount of screenshot I took to save those... more>> beautiful words is not little. I can't wait to finish reading the translation!

Spoiler

"The moonlight and the evening breeze could all bear witness; the cicadas were their attendants, and the sky and the earth were their grand hall."

"According to his imperial mother, he is the most powerful little doctor, but it seems he is unable to save Rong Tang."

"Rong Tang lifted his gaze under the lamplight, whispering, "Ask me again."

If you ask me again, this time, I'l definitely go with you.

Only with you."

One of the best bl I've read in recent memory, it's a mutual pampering type story where the leads truly seem well matched, where one minute they're comparing notes on the latest schemes to overturn the country, testing each other's wits like top students, and in the next moment, they're stuffing each other with candy (& me with dog food). Although MC is not directly in the action due to his resolution to live out his last sickly life in peace, he's always able to trace what significant event has... more>> happened with just a few words. ML, who is way too terrifyingly smart, makes the original 'Son of Heaven' character look like a joke from beginning to end. No wonder that guy always lost, everything was always in the palm of ML.

In the first two lives, ML lost many things without realizing it & made himself miserable while seeking revenge, even though he always succeeded. I'm glad MC could help him get back so many people who care about him & make his life worth living on, even after his revenge. I'm also glad MC didn't let their relationship stagnate for too long even if he was conflicted, and he always put ML first, even when the whole world told him he was wrong to do so. I think he has always loved the ML, even before he transmigrated, but that's just what I read in between the lines.

The 'Son of Heaven' character who was supposed to overthrow the ML is a disgusting thing that reads like the scummiest s*um gong to ever scum. They were never in that type of relationship beyond mentor & student, but the s*um still blames MC somehow after squeezing every last drop of use out of him. It does not make sense the level of victim mentality he somehow has, and I hate him.

5 stars bc this novel deserves a higher rating that what it has. <<less

I'm not sure if I'll keep reading or not? I read too little to understand the MC and ML's future character development, but I can't read this right now.

Spoiler

it's only happened twice so far, but why is it that when the ML gets angry at MC, his first, knee-jerk reaction is is to strangle MC?? The first time I was freaked out but understood - he didn't trust MC and was suspicious because of what happened prior. But the second time??

The 2nd time is after they get married and grow closer. They're not together but the ML dotes on MC. those two at this point are like the beginning stages of a deep love but before it gets too intense, still a bit light, but there's something.

this time, when ML tightens the MC's cloak, as if to strangle him, MC senses danger but doesn't understand what he did wrong because the reason is too small to warrant being strangled! By his own LEGAL SPOUSE! with whom he has a good relationship!

Like, I get it. The ML trusts no one, is suspicious of everyone, and is cunning. But why, when the person that you know cherishes you and treats you well that you yourself spoil and care about, your first instinct when they make you mad is to strangle them? to threaten them with the fear of death to apologize for something that doesn't justify such an extreme reaction?

that kind of subtle but dangerous violence coming from the ML is so off-putting for me, and I'm very understanding of trauma-related responses. if they weren't as close I would keep reading to see how their relationship changes for the better, but... it really gives "stabbed when you least expect it by the person you're closest to" vibes and I hate it. at this stage they don't competely trust each other, nor are they totally open with each other, but they like each other (in a non-specific way) a little too much for me to... not be disappointed in the ML for this.

[collapse]

Idk things change in the future so maybe I'll continue reading it then but this upset me so much.

if I do, I'll update this review. <<less

It was one of the best novels I've read so far! If course there were some cliché usual for novels like ML being too aggressive in bed until MC cries but not too much so it says okay. But the plot! It was slow but at the same time so captivating I couldn't look away. Both of them pamper each other so much. And one of the best things is that supporting characters are so vivid. Each has its own history and personality. Though I have to admit that we... more>> don't have much insight into reasons of the final villains. They are just too disgusting for this. All in all it definitely deserves 5 stars and I will surely read it again <<less

A beautiful, brilliant book. The progression of the plot is smooth, slow, yet never boring, captivating from the first moments. The development of the relationships between the main pair is one of the best I've ever seen -- gentle, gradual, based on mutual respect and understanding, from a simple interest to a true devotion. The complexity of the relationships and characters is deserving all praise. A real masterpiece of a story.

I loved how poetic this novel was. The way the author writes out such vivid scenes gave it an almost cinematic feel in my head. The political intrigue was very well done, so was the progression of the relationships and connections between the characters. It is by no means solely political or transmigration piece, it is more Slice of Life and reflective. You find yourself pondering between conversations and mundane scenes. So beautiful! I agree falls more on narrative rather than the immersive description of the rest of the novel.... more>>

But I did not mind as we were following MC who is not too immersed in all the fighting.

I really love the relationship between MC and ML. The mutual pining is ugh so delicious.

They both are really skilled and on par with each other, so the scene of 'Finally met someone who can keep up with you and understand you without words needed. Sadly both of you strive for different goals so you can't be together' is so bittersweet.

I was up until 6 AM last night finishing this. The main characters are all beautifully complex, the plot is so intriguing and constantly keeping you guessing, and the side characters / villains are all wonderful additions to the story. Each side character is so well-rounded that I got attached to them. Rong Tang’s mother, grandmother, and (some of) his siblings were so dear to me. Same with Su Huaijing’s family. Ke Hongxue and Mu Jingxu the most stunning and romantic side couple I’ve seen yet. This novel was so... more>> comforting, I loved that there was no misunderstandings between the main couple that lasted for a long time. I also loved that each arc of the novel had its own purpose and attention grabbing detail.

Su Huaijing had a terrible & extremely traumatic past, and Rong Tang was there to dote on and comfort him practically from the start. It’s always nice to see good people get what they deserve, (same with bad people) and this novel is incredibly satisfying in that regard. I appreciated how Su Huaijing and Rong Tang are both so multi-faceted. Rong Tang is very physically weak because of his illness, but he’s the most fearless character in this novel. Su Huaijing is the picture of a vengeful spirit, back to haunt his enemies, but he’s also the most gentle and caring husband

and brother. His relationship with Mu Jingxu is one of my favorite parts of this whole novel. I adore their little family of schemers, including their er ge.

[collapse]

Truthfully, I can’t come up with any large critiques of it, but I can say that the middle got a little bit slow. This week has been pretty distracting, and I wasn’t able to get fully into it until I had time to process everything, so it took me longer than I had expected to finish it. I wasn’t able to find the time or energy to focus on reading the politics-heavy parts until this weekend, so when you start this make sure you have time and energy to fully enjoy it! It’s very politics-centered, so for people who like convoluted plots and schemes, this is for you. For those of you who like action, there’s still plenty of those scenes in this novel, but it will mostly be on Su Huaijing’s side since Rong Tang is ill.

In regards to the plot, I didn’t find any plot holes except for one small detail that I was curious about, which was

I want to know how their nephew Yuanyuan became the Crown Prince of a different country during those ten years, and where his mother (their older brother’s wife) went?? I might’ve missed the part that explained what happened to her.

A wonderful story full of twists and turns. Our understanding of the world of the novel brought to question again and again.

One thing remains certain throughout, which is the love between the protagonist and ML. From platonic to familial and romantic, no matter what kind of love they both our each other as their top priority.

The ML isn't the usual stoic, stone cold, say only one word for three type. He's vibrant, he's emotional, he has his own ups and downs.

The side characters are pretty well fleshed out as well,... more>> none of them falling into a broad stereotype.

Some parts of the plot did leave me questioning my intelligence as it got a bit incomprehensibleand convoluted but I can turn a blind eye to that as it doesn't effect the reading experience overall. Even if some things are confusing it gets cleared up later.

One thing to not misunderstand is that it's not a realistic novel. It's fictional very much. So please don't compare the situations to that of real life, that's just sucking the joy out of it.

Spectacular and heart warming, leaves you at the edge of your seat. Really a gem of a book. <<less

4 stars.

I'm not in the right mindset to read a slow story like this. The biggest thing that's keeping me from reading further is how the summary set my expectations on how the pacing of the story will go.

This really is a good story. But like I said above, not really in the right mindset. It starts out strong but as we get the introductions of MC and ML out of the way, there isn't really a sense of urgency to progress the plot. Yes things are happening, but they... more>> don't really feel like they have real purpose to a real end goal.

Spoiler

And the sense of urgency comes from the MC himself. He's always referring to his past do-overs and referring to the novel's plot that he got transmigrated to. He's also always worrying about the villain ML but it comes off as smoke and mirrors therefore, there's really no reason to worry. But that feeling is still projected to the reader without a good outlet.

[collapse]

If there was a POV to the original male protagonist to give perspective on what's happening on the novel plot side, I feel like that would add more depth to the story. But this story isn't about him so it's honestly whatever.

My biggest pet peeve is when the summary itself spoilers the ending. Yes, it's predictable in how this is going to end with these genres but I also expect that's where the story is going to start off or be within the first 10-20 chapters. Or if the author is going to give us a good drama build up to that moment. So mentally, I was ready for a somewhat fast-paced story with good behind the scenes manipulation. But I didn't.

I will say I do like the relationship between MC and ML. It's very sweet and they are somewhat open with each other especially since they're practically strangers. I like the tidbits of MC and ML showing a little bit of their real faces and they like that about each other.

MC is still scared of ML but admires his meticulousness on how he does things. ML sees a bit of the serious and cunning side of MC and just loves that about him.

The story itself is also very easy to read. I'm never confused about what I'm reading, and if there's any cultural disconnect, the translator has little notes to explain.

I feel like when I'm wanting a more peaceful story to read, I'll pick this up again. But for now, I'll let this story build up chapters before then. <<less

Look. This book has a sickly MC and a green flag yandere ML. It only had to be decent for me to love it. It didn't have to be great. It didn't have to be exceptional. It didn't have to have the best damn political maneuvering I've read outside of QJJ. Or a cast of side characters I love as much as I love the main characters of plenty other danmei. Or a set of plot twists and worldbuilding revelations that genuinely took my breath away. It just did all... more>> that because it could. This writer, needless to say, is much better than the writer of "The Emperor's Journey, " the book that went so far off the rails Rong Tang was yoinked from his own afterlife to correct it. This writer knows exactly who the protagonists are and makes us root for them and even fear for them--despite telling us in the synopsis that they'll win and live happily ever after.

I don't really know how to describe all the reasons I love this book in the level of detail I usually strive for. The romance was heartfelt and funny and sweet and sour. The characters were clever and dynamic and good and bad and hurt and hurting and even Sheng Chengli, you can tell why he ended up the way he did, and I actually felt a little bad for him by the end... but also, f*ck him, he's an a**hole. The pacing is immaculate; I was surprised when I realized there were only twenty chapters left in the main story. The extras are everything I could have asked for. The plot answers all the questions I had in a way I never could have expected but feels so perfectly right. I think at some point in my reading I was thinking that there was something that got dropped? But I don't even remember what it was now, so it couldn't have been important enough to decrease the rating of the book. This thing is phenomenal. <<less

Wow, truly, what a journey.

This novel finds you when less you expect it. At first glance you might not give it much thought, but man, It's an absolute masterpiece if you read it. You get to cry, laugh, and feel many emotions while reading it.

Not only the romance is sooooooooooo beautiful, but the plot also shines along with it. 50% plot 50% romance, very well balanced.

A green flag and longing for love ML, multifaceted MC, amazing secondary characters with 3D personalities, everyone has their role, their story. The plot has... more>> no holes, and there is meaning in every action and word spoken.

I'll only say the following: if u expect for MC to actively plot, fight and get involved in the palace intrigue, this is not for you. In this one ML mainly does it. It's true that he had the pivotal role for that in his two first lifes, but the third one... boy is just so tired... you can understand it as him "watching the world burn from a god like perspective" while sometimes dropping hints to help those he cares about. He understands that "that" is not his role, that ML can fight by himself. Even so, this third live helps him descifer the mysteries of his own existence and more. <<less

This is a story that's decently plotted, though the eventual resolution is handwavey. There's definitely effort put into imagining the plot, intrigue and character dynamics. But it also suffers from the condition where minor characters appear and disappear as needed.

Ironically, I don't find MC and ML compelling characters. As much as the plot criticizes the 'designated protagonist' as forcing events in the story to bend to their will, MC and ML's relationship feels very forced, and when they start 'fade to black papapa-ing' in the last third of the book,... more>> it feels especially forced and bland.

On the other hand, the secondary pairing is soooo much more interesting but we're only shown a bit of them in the extras :') They were one of those characters who disappeared conveniently towards the end of the story.

Overall, a 3.5-4 for effort. <<less

4.5 is a fair rating.

The novel is good, well-thought-out, well-written, and well-paced. There's just something missing. Maybe I was hoping for more emotion, or maybe a stronger grip on the plot that would keep me reading.

Nevertheless, everything about it is good. Although the ML is very possessive (sometimes to a fault), he's also very devoted, and I like that. The MC is smart, but a bit of a salty fish. The side characters are very well-developed. I recommend it.

This Husband Is Frail and Weak is one of those stories that quietly warms your heart while keeping you completely hooked. Beneath the "frail and weak", there is a gentle, resilient MC who deserves all the love he gets—and the ML gives it without hesitation. Their bond feels deeply reassuring.

It's comforting, sweet, and emotionally satisfying, with just the right balance of humor and tenderness.

This is the kind of story you read slowly, ay

This is the kind of book you think about when you're not thinking about anything else.

Rong Tang remained silent, recalling those two lifetimes that unspooled like old film reels. Finally, he whispered, "You are you."

You are salvation itself.

You are the one I gravitate toward even when I'm helpless, even when defiance feels impossible.

You are the quiet refuge beyond high-pressure missions and intricate schemes.

You are the crossroads where paths repeatedly converge and part-a tree under which there's always a pot of sake, shared beneath moonlight or the glow of dusk.

Rong Tang concluded softly, "You are irreplaceable."

Aaaaahh, this novel has all my heart and I won't be able to get it back so soon. Their love dynamic, familial relations and the way they resonate their emotions with one another so easily.

Forgive me for any discrepancies, this is my first time writing a review. I am mostly a silent reader but this one compelled me with my strong emotions for this book. <<less
