The Guide to Capturing a Black Lotus

The demons of this world run amok; it’s time for the children of heroes to fill in their own legends.

Unfortunately, you’re not the cold and incorruptible female lead(FL). You’re not even the high-status, delicate and charming second female lead: You’re just the detestable cannon fodder female number three!

The original character was secretly in love with the male lead(ML) while a fanatic in harming the FL from the dark. Till the very end, she was merely a stumbling block for the love between the ML and FL. She let herself get stepped all over by the second male lead and lived a life that could only described as ‘s*upid’.

“So you’re saying… as long as I steal the FL’s man, I’ll have succeeded?”

“Apologies, your target partner is… the FL’s little brother.”

“Little brother?”

“Yes, it’s exactly that little brother who’s hopelessly in love with his older sister. The one with a twisted heart and evil tendencies, vicious and merciless… that little brother.”

objectively this did seem rather interesting at first. However, I found that the course of events didn't always make sense and some chapters were especially hard to read. It is a cute story, and I can tell that the author was constantly trying to add more layers of depth. However, the system itself is flawed and shows itself only when it needed to create tension for the story, for me it felt forced. I found that the two leads were interesting, the ML being especially so. But even if he... more>> is interesting, it's not to the point of being refreshing for the troupe. The MC is cute and down to earth, but being forced to act by the system, I just lost my patience. <<less

This was really really good! The ratings are so misleading! T.T

It’s rare that these transmigration into a book type stories have something going on in the plot besides the romance (or ancient intrigue if it’s a historical novel) so I really appreciated the focus on demon slaying. It also made the conflict richer because the troubles that the characters are faced with are more than just greedy or jealous relatives and arrogant or delusional suitors. I don’t know how many novels I’ve read when all of the conflict is a... more>> result of some cartoonishly evil stepsister/stepmother that cannot give up. In this novel the conflict is directly related to the evil demons roaming around and the ML’s hidden past that is connected to demons which is so much more gripping! At some points I was reminded of The Founder of Diabolism.

Also I love that the FL is restricted in various ways because of her system because it makes her struggles justifiable. On one hand she has to stay in character and complete her role as a villainous supporting female lead at certain plot points but on the other hand she’s also tasked with making the male supporting lead like her. These goals often run counter to one another because she has to stick to the original male lead of the novel and disrupt the feelings between him and the original female lead while also somehow making the female lead’s brother fall for her. Watching her trying to navigate this dilemma is endlessly entertaining because while our girl isn’t OP or a genius, she’s clever when she needs to be.

Admittedly, the ML is a little hard to like at first but when you uncover more about his road to blackening you end up adoring and pitying him because at the end of the day he’s just a poor boy who craves love. His jealousy towards the male lead who our FL pretends to like is pretty cute too.

An example of how cute he later becomes occurs near the end of the story. The FL asks him to play in the snow while preparing snowballs and him being a bullied person who’s never played with friends in the snow before assumes by “playing” the FL wants to pelt him with snow so he obediently stands in place and braces himself for her attack. Of course, when she sees him closing his eyes and standing still, the FL is like uh why aren’t you moving? I need your help to make a snowman. Lol our ML is so self-sacrificing.

The ML and FL don’t fall in love at first sight and watching them fall in love over time was super moving. Their bickering at the start had me rolling and then watching the ML play cute little tricks to get the FL’s attention when he later developed feelings for her was funny too.

Like when he claims that the river they have to cross is super cold and the weak FL wouldn’t be able to handle it at all so he HAS to carry her on his back to across because there is absolutely no other way lol

Plus, it’s great that the original male and female leads are genuinely good people. They actually act like the righteous people that they’re supposed to be and at no point do they fall for anyone besides each other. When the original male lead tried to set up the FL and the ML at the very beginning because of his misunderstanding I cackled.

Overall, I highly recommend this story because it’s truly a breath of fresh air!!!! <<less

Very good read, that I MTL this novel. I'm not gonna spoil for you too much, but this novel is worth to read. Even MTL is easy to understand (at least for me). The ML backstory kinda sad and that make him what he was, if not for our girl Ling Miao Miao (MC) the ML would be gone I tell you. It's cute when our ML starting to fall for MC, and he's such a big vinegar jar ... more>>

Even after they got married, ML keep MC from the story ML fearing that she still have feeling for him (which is not). Even before they married, Mu Sheng (ML) use some kind of magic to control MC so she would married him. Basically made her his doll for 7 days, which she would married him but not very happy with his method. Our ML fall helplessly in love with our MC, that in their marriage vow instead of "in this life, never betrayed" our ML change it to "life and death will always entangled" according to MTL.

Transmigrated Cannon Fodder X Dark 2nd ML may seem cliché at first. But trust me this has surpassed all novels in my collection. The setting is quite similar to MDZS but more focuses on demon hunting. My baby girl, Ling Miaomiao aka Ling Yu, is smart and good-natured without being too kind-hearted. (Wellll.. ML might not agree w/ me but who cares) While Mu Sheng is an obsessive and protective adopted brother of the ori-FL. As always I don't wanna much heh.. Since it involves mysteries.

Still..A bit of spoiler

The romance is pretty slow but very satisfying. ML might start off as hating her for tampering his sister 's protective talisman (which is the doing of the system).

Many readers thought he tried to kill her in the bamboo forest incident but it later turns out that he secretly put the protective talisman inside the sachet he forced her to change (MC thought the blue flame that killed the bamboo demon was a part of system) which means he just want to scare threaten her. (Fine! He still meant some harm actually))

Wow, this novel is really good it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole time I was reading it. It's probably one of my top few romance novels where there was almost nothing I disliked.

I binged the cn raws to finish the story quickly so I'm probably gonna reread a second time to fully appreciate how the author described the scenes.

The plotline is well developed and the world building is awesome. Each arc of the novel is written well and action-packed. The author has this very... more>> beautiful writing style that immerses the reader into the story. With her words alone, the scene appears in my mind and I can almost feel it. It's like getting the same vibes when you watch movies like: The Legend of the demon cat and Detective Dee

About the FL: She's definitely not your typical FL who descends like an angel from heavens to save the pitiful ML. Instead, she advices ML and 'wakes him up'. She sees things in a very logical and clear-cut way and makes decisions that would deal the least potential damage. Also, the lines said by her are really impactful and sincere and hit close to the bone.

Does FL love ML or is she playing along for the sake of completing the missions? Ans:

Her love is not shown in an obvious manner in which she tells the ML directly that she likes him. Instead you can see it through her actions. It was somewhat indicated in the arc where Mu Sheng was feeling insecure and he controlled and imprisoned her to marry him. While Mu Sheng thought that she was hypnotized, in reality she was awake and just went along with him. She didn't mind marrying this yandere at all and was fully prepared to accept the flaws that came with him

About the system: To be honest, I'm always slightly iffy about system novels because I don't really like that the actions of FL are somewhat controlled by the system. However, the author has manage to justify the FL actions and the system's purpose in the novel and it has satisfied me!!

btw she doesn't follow the system missions every time and has attempted to exploit loopholes when possible

Please do not skip the author's Q&A at chapter 75 of the JJWXC raws. I think it answers most doubts that readers have about the novel and explains why certain characters act in certain ways.

About the ML: Puppy in need of love. Do note that ML nature is dark and yandere. He's very selfish and possessive but he stops before he crosses the line of no return.

the 崩坏脑洞2.0 side stories are soo cute!!! Our cute Mu Sheng planning ahead for his future with Miaomiao♡♡♡

First discovered the manhua then found out there was somebody translating the novel! What caught my eye is the refreshing storyline. There's no OP female lead here. Miao Miao is a normal girl with a quick tongue and her sassy dynamic with the yandere second ML is so cute and fluffy. Yes, she basically tames him and it is so fun to watch!

There's a deeper mystery in the plot which keeps me hooked chapter after chapter. Very good quality translations too which is a big plus ^^

cannot get enough of this novel. I've read this 3 times in a week (purchased the raw at jjwxc to mtl non translated chapters) and I'll probably reread it again. there's a whole lot of things to love but my fav is the definitely the relationships between the characters.

I love the main leads and how their feelings progressed. ling miaomiao went from simply wanting to complete her task to genuinely caring for a freaking yandere and mu sheng only wanted to use miaomiao at first but then went through a... more>> huge character growth from future irredeemable villain to somewhat-humane-yandere bc miaomiao wholeheartedly supported him!!!!!!!

I love how mu sheng doesn't change into a total angel bc miaomiao knows her limits. there are parts where mu sheng doesn't listen to her when she tells him to stop but I think it's important that he regrets his actions and apologizes to her later. the novel doesn't shirk away from pointing out that mu sheng gets off on controlling miaomiao and he himself struggles with it. even early on in the novel we see that there are instances where mu sheng changes his mind a lot.

he made the decision to hurt people but stops himself before it gets to the point of no return, like wiping out miaomiao's family or using miaomiao to heal himself. a normal person would have stopped themselves before even doing it but it wouldn't be fair to judge him based on normal standards so I think mu sheng's doing good.

i love it when later on he starts to feel guilty and miaomiao ruthlessly tells him that it's kinda late in the game to regret his evil deeds. then she points out that she's also committed murder so if he wants her to be scared of him he should be scared of her too lol miaomiao is really perfect for mu sheng!

honestly, even if you only read this for ling miaomiao and mu sheng's interactions, you will enjoy it a lot. there's so much tension between them as friends and as lovers

you can argue that miaomiao doesn't really grow much as a character but since I stopped reading around the part where the group confirms mu sheng's true identity, I can't say anything definitive about her growth.

another thing I love is how mu yao very very very slowly warms up to miaomiao and liu fuyi totally treats miaomiao as a little sister and does his best as her wingman a hahahha idk, it's like... meta-wise, miaomiao doesn't hijack the role of the protagonist? as compared to a lot of transmigration stories I mean. she's very much a side character and the spotlight only shines on her when it's the og ling yu's or musheng's turn on the stage.

I'm very thankful to the translator for introducing me to this wonderful novel! <<less

My favorite thing about this novel was reading how the relationship developed between the two leads-especially since I started out HATING the male lead. I absolutely detested him and did not think I would grow to like him. In the beginning, I was really frustrated with how the female lead would put up with his BS, but I felt that she actually handled him very well after considering everything.

I loved how none of the characters were absolutely OP. I mean the female lead isn’t super intelligent or tactical, but the... more>> male lead falls in love with her because of how she actually cares for him. I think the more I read the more enjoyable the banter became between the two. I also really liked how there wasn’t any heavy romantic drama between any of the group. The second male lead and the second female lead never really strayed from each other. Watching the male lead misunderstand and get jealous with the second male lead was really humorous.

All in all, this is a pretty plot heavy book where romance isn’t the sole focus. So if you’re looking for something with action, mystery, adventure, and romance development, this is a good bet. I’m so glad I didn’t give up on this book when I couldn’t stand the male lead in the beginning. <<less

This is a really good novel! The plot was interesting and made actual sense, the characters were really interesting, not annoying at all, even the villains had good reasons to be evil and their actions were in concordance with the plot (no character was evil for petty reason) and my favorites Miaomiao and Mu Sheng are a perfect couple and deserve to be happy forever, (even though Mu Sheng was a little a*** at the beginning hahahha)

I loved this story and I really recommend it!

I really liked the book. Even though I was angry at the ML at some points like when he made her fall into a pit and almost sent to death or when he tied her up (only for a short while) when she talked to the original ML alone, you could feel his love. Don’t misunderstand my words, he is NOT an extreme yandere who ties up the heroine and abuses her. He is really sweet and gentle when talking to her, just sometimes turns into a vinegar jar.

I really... more>> cried for a long time because of the ML’s parent’s story. I hate the ML’s father’s sister for separating them and erasing his memories. Even after the father regained his memories on the verge of death and asked her to take the ML back from the Mu family, she didn’t even bother looking for him. I still don’t get why many authors have to create a tragic love story for the parents of one of the protagonists. I would prefer it the father met the ML or his mother at least once after he regained his memories. Just so that they could ask the questions and know that he didn’t abandon them knowingly. Just so that he could feel the guilt. <<less

At the early chap, I was mad cause the ML won't appreciate the MC even if the MC didn't do anything wrong. The MC tried really hard and ML just let her to die.

But then I started thinking on behalf of the ml. The ML was paranoid and at that point he doesn't realise that he had already started to develop feeling for the MC. The ML still think he loves his sister so I can't blame him for trying not to save someone he doesnt care.

The ML change tho when he realise he loves the MC. Even though he using the wrong method.

I started thinking abt the MC. Whether she really loves the ML or just play along so that she could complete the mission.

This was pretty good, bit plot heavy and Non-OP battles. Nearly every scene all the characters are at the verge of death my gosh.

A realistic normal FL is just trying to satisfy the systems requirements of following plot of being 'in love with' male protagonist as well as make the villain fall for her. Her impression of him from the OG book made her unable to think that this brother could ever love someone other than his sister so she only tries to befriend as normal (little did she know... more>> he totally fell for that lol)

The ending imo

Seems like an open ended Sad ending? I couldn't tell with the mtl but definitely ML has lost normal human thoughts and morals and is just this spooky black mist with killing urges. Wtf. Atleast FL sticks with him and is slowly teaching him to act normal.

This novel is really good. I really feel that they can make a tv series out of this novel. The plots were clear without losing its track and you'll grow attached to all of the characters, including the side characters. MC herself is very cute, her line of thoughts made me laughed a lot of times. Not gonna spoil anything about the ML but just have to gush that their relationship is very sweet. It's not one sided affection and I love their devotion to each other.

I love how the... more>> story builds up and starts to reveal more of the mystery. No boring plot and it keeps you in suspense. The comedy was done right and the emotional part was done right too. My pile of wet tissues is the proof of it, or my tear duct might just be leaking.

The story about ML parents was a tragedy. The author notes make sense though, the ML father felt that he was lied too so he made the hasty decision to leave the ML mother. But he regretted it and was about to come back right away but his memory was tampered by the evil sister. The saddest part was when he woke up and realized that he had neglected the mother. The ML father's sister was definitely the most rotten evil in the story. All of her deeds originated from greed and affected a lot of people. I honestly wished that she suffered more.

Thank you translator for picking this up! I mtl-ed the novel because I was impatient, but I will definitely re-read the translated part as well. So many details were lost in the mtl and I would love to know more. :3 <<less

I feel like the only reason I stayed was the female lead. Miamiao was just too precious, I actually liked her. The male lead? Mmmm...I understand he had a bad past, which caused a lot of trauma on him but, I just couldn't find it in me to like him. Yes I felt bad for him, no child should have to go through what he did.... more>>

The whipping scene broke my heart.

The story was flowing pretty well until it wasn't. I honestly got to a point of the story where I didn't know what in the world was going on. I was like hold up! Pause! Rewind! Is this a flashback? Are we in the present? Are we looking at what a different character is doing right now or did I somehow end up in a different story? Idkkkkkkkk. <<less

And great work on the translation!

I really enjoyed this, it was probably my first foray into 'non-MC' type novels. Although I must say first time I read it, I skipped entire chunks of a certain part of plot, mainly coz there was no FL/ML development wakekek

So far, I've really enjoyed this novel. I'd probably give it a 4.5, or somewhere between a 4 and 5 star rating. I personally love MC who get by on their smarts and ability to lie.

The MC and her relationships with the other main characters are all complicated and don't follow the usual tropes of this genre. The world building is interesting in that they're demon hunters in a fantasy world where reality can bend. I'm not usually a fan of systems directing the MC but this one isn't too... more>> intrusive - it mainly just ensures the MC follows the plot.

The ML is definitely a yandere. For the original FL, not our MC. It takes some time for the ML to come around, and he's not doting on the MC in the mean time, so if that's not your thing, you may not enjoy their relationship. It creates an interesting dynamic, in my opinion, and I'm really enjoying the steady growth of their relationship as they learn to understand and trust each other.

Occasionally the writing can be confusing, and it can be hard to differentiate from flashback and present. But overall, the story and translation are well done. I recommend. <<less

This is interesting. The plot seems unique, the relationships are complex and the romance isn't linear like many novels I've read on this site.

I like the MC. She's not some overpowered assassin, nor scheming b*tch. She's intelligent and insightful and doesn't consider the missions as mere game quests. As a mtter of fact, this is the first time I've seen a novel intertwine the missions with the plot of the novel in such an interesting manner. You go through the story and things are unravelled on their own little by... more>> little. It feels very much like a psychological thriller or a detective novel set in a fantasy setting.

The narration is both very beautiful and very criptic. The author uses the narrative style we often see in movies: While one set of characters talk about a topic, the scene moves to another scene dealing with the same topic - either through dialogues between other characters or through flashbacks. The problem is (and this is just my personal thoughts), this narrative technique works brilliantly in some chapters, while it makes other chapters very cryptic and confusing. Kudos to the translator for doing such s great job at portraying the intricacies of the narration so well in English. The characters themselves are very well done. The only complaint I have is regarding the original novel's FL. She just annoys me for some reason. She's not a bad person, neither is she a naive white lotus. It's just that her thought process seems way too narrow in some ways. (In the novel, she is described as someone who sees the world in "either black or white", which I believe is absolutely accurtare in describing her.) I don't know if I'll change my opinion later, but for now, I feel that she isn't a good match for the original ML, nor does she deserve the overwhelming and unconditional love she gets from her brother (our ML).

Sorry for that rant.

Tl;dr: The novel is very different from the concept of 'light novels' in general. There's an intriguing plot and many interesting characters.

Definitely RECOMMENDED! <<less
