Hard to enjoy this novel because all the characters are so unlikeable. Seriously. Every single one of them. Some spoilers below but let me elaborate:

Characters:... more>>
Spoiler

MC: His motives and growth are too inexplicable. In his previous life, he was saved by the princess of the kingdom his family betrayed. She despised him and only saved him so she can use him like a pawn. The affection she had for him is similar to the affection a pedestrian might have for a dog turd on the sidewalk. He ends up dying anyway. Yet, after his rebirth, MC treats her like she's his goddess. Ok, sure, whatever. Maybe she's his type. What's less believable is that somehow, despite the MC being a useless garbage in his first life, he's suddenly now a cunning mastermind who's well versed in politics and economics.

MC's mom: Oh boy. *Takes a deep breath*. I struggle to find the words to describe this disgusting character. My expression when I'm thinking about how to describe her is similar to the expression one might have when appraising a c*ckroach.

She is a subhuman who lacks the emotions that makes humans human. She's disloyal, irresponsible, and selfish. She cheats on her husband with the king, and then constantly prioritizes the king's wellbeing over her husband and children. When her son found out, she even tried to secretly notify the king, completely disregarding her son's safety. The king would have surely sent assassins after the boy, but she doesn't even consider it.

She has no capacity to feel guilt, familial bonds, and can't consider the consequences of her actions. Her husband, who she claims to love, is the strongest person in the Kingdom and the only one preventing the enemies from invading. Despite all that, she still cheats on him. She then plays the victim, fake-crying and pretending to be unconscious. Yeah, basically this character is disgusting, but has so much screen time for whatever reason.

MC's dad: He's a complete moron. Despite being the strongest being in the kingdom both physically and politically, with the ability to replace the king anytime he wants, he choses to yield the Kingdom to its enemy, the Empire. Obviously, no one's going to trust a turncoat, so he was executed by the Empire afterwards. His reasoning makes zero sense. If he's going to rebel, why not just take over himself? He has an invincible position in the kingdom, since his troops are the ones defending the chokepoint border. He's personally strong enough to waltz into the kingdom and chop the king's head off, and the empress supports him. Also, despite him being infatuated with his wife, he apparently neglects her in bed? This character literally makes no sense.

The king: Ah yes, the king. His kingdom's survival is completely reliant on ONE person to defend a chokepoint from a larger nation, and instead of building good relations with that person he sleeps with his wife. His IQ is about the same as the temperature of the wine he guzzles.

The princess: MC is infatuated with her and worships the floor she walks on, but she's essentially a dollar-store heroine. Very dry interactions.

[collapse]

Some stories are heavily carried by their cast, and reading about characters you like and root for makes everything more enjoyable. This story is the opposite. Almost every scene made me feel frustration because every single character is a potato.

edit:

@MyRAMEN: Since you claim what I wrote are "lies and manipulation", could you provide any examples? Because from what I read of your 3 paragraph review, there's absolutely nothing of substance. My description of the characters and events are in fact, accurate. You regurgitate your own opinion multiple times and then go off on some weird ntr tangent that is irrelevant.

Also, I'm glad the story was so "good" and you enjoyed it so much that you read an entire 9 chapters.🤡

And naturally, anyone who has a different opinion from you is a "toxic narcissist", and you, who rudely flame internet strangers over a difference in opinion, are not toxic or narcissistic at all. 🤡🤡 <<less

This novel was a breath of fresh air for me, and I highly recommend it. The review left by ScaredTeacup really does not do it justice and stems primarily from them not properly understanding the nuisance of the story. The characters in this story are very dysfunctional, but they are still likable characters that you'll end up cheering on.

I implore anyone reading this review to give this novel a shot and see if you enjoy it.

Despite the father and son being despicable simps this is an enjoyable novel.

So here we have a another reincarnated protagonist sent to the past to make more of his life. It's set in a fantasy world with conquest, civil war and political scheming as the majority story beats. I enjoy the gritty spin this novel has with characters that are all just a little bit broken for believable reasons. Be it love, lust, incompetence or insanity. It not GrimDark but the messiness of imperial conquest, political and romantic intrigue and... more>> civil war shine through.

There is action but so far the protagonist is too young and weak to be involved in the major fighting (though he has killed someone already) As a result the political maneuvering takes centre stage for now. However with the plots points that have been set up it seems he will be quite strong in the future so that's something to look forward to.

The reason I'd give this novel something closer to a 3.5 rather than 4 is that the characters get on my nerves a lot. The protagonist and his father are some of the biggest simps I've ever seen. The father is so far gone that he happily sacrifice his children, his nation and his family lineage for his wife, the major inciting incident is that his wife
Spoiler

willingly has an adulterous affair with the king due to the fact that MC father hasn't been intimate with her for ages (assumably because he put her some sort of untouchable pedestal) resulting in him finding out snippets of it and thinking the king forced a kiss on her despite it being willing

[collapse]
. The MC father would happily mu*der anyone who speaks bad about her even though she very much deserves it imo.

While the MC isn't as far gone as his father all his post reincarnation ambitions revolve around getting his love interest on the throne. Even though from what we have seen pre- reincarnation she (rightfully) treated him as nothing but a useful but despicable tool she was forced to work with by circumstances.

I'd say the third character that makes this novel unbearable is the king. He is so painfully incompetent that it is a wonder he can breathe unaided. I mean:
Spoiler

who has an affair with the wife of the strongest person in your nation, the person who is notoriously protective over his wife, the person who's family single handedly defends your Nations key weak point again the aggressive Empire that has been trying to conquer you for centuries.

[collapse]
That on top of the numerous other incredibly s*upid things he has done makes it all just a bit ridiculous at times.

However it's still early days yet and there is plenty of room for character development on the MC side. For example I'm m wondering how this'll turn into a harem novel even with his single mindedness. Plus the world settings is interesting so I'd still recommend it despite my gripes. <<less

It’s a pretty solid novel, I enjoy the MC and his extreme mentality when it comes to what he’ll do to achieve his goals. He doesn’t care about how he’s perceived and it’s nice to have a fantasy novel without a overpowered MC that gets by more by using his wits and intelligence.

I did see @scaredteacups review and honestly when it comes to characters it’s all about preference. Let me explain:

Spoiler

.

When it comes to how they explained the character it’s a bit off. For example the reason the MCs father can’t kill the king is because of the pact made with a dragon and the royal bloodline.

As for the mom she isn’t anywhere near as heartless as @sacredteacups described and when it come to the MC if you do read properly then you’d know why he’s as smart as he is he literally learned from the best in his past life. He also wasn’t talentless garbage he was a sword master like his father his only issue was that he was outclassed when it came to protecting everyone from the antagonist that is the emperor.

The king is a scumbag and also on drugs and pretty much out of his mind. As for the gorge I don’t know why it’s a con that it’s an important defensive point there actually a lot of lore behind it if you keep reading past 30 chapters.

[collapse]

I’ll also say this 30 chapters isn’t enough to get to know characters properly. It’s enough chapters to decide wether to keep reading or not but when it comes to characters growth there isn't much that can be done in 30 chapters especially in a novel that has politics and strategy. Most of the novel has the protagonist prepare for the future so that he can avoid the mistakes of his past life. And seeing how popular @scaredteacup I’m worried some people might not give the novel a chance.

I personally liked it and have come to like the characters there not perfect and have there flaws but I think that makes them better than most perfect characters. There flaws make them more human, the MCs family isn’t perfect but as you keep reading you see how they slowly come to understand each other the best they can and I think that’s pretty cool. I say give it a shot and see how you feel about it the plot is interesting enough to read past 30 chapters imo. <<less

I honestly wouldn't have read this, but my expectations were great after reading Sacredteacup's hate speal. I was left severely disappointed, as half of what he wrote were lies, and most of it was honestly manipulative... Regardless... I read on! I trekked through the paragraphs of political speal, and in conclusion... I dropped it unsurprisingly, though for starkly different reasons. ... more>>

The ntr which was true, but nothing according to the hater said, is one thing, but it was said the MC and his siblings are actually the king's children. This meant- in*est... as the whole plot is essentially simping to the princess who saved him (ignoring the 10 years of the empire and also the other princess of that [enemy faction] chasing after him]) and staying alive. But luckily it was later hinted that the MC's father also had an affair with the Queen, meaning she could possibly be the MC's father's (who was said to be impotent) actual child. possibly

[collapse]

I am very bummed out how good the story turned out to be, I had great expectations from SacredTeacup's lies and manipulation of facts, and was what made me interested in the novel. To see how bad the story was, especially the characters. I wanted to revel in the shtshow. I also wanted to see why the reviews were so Contrasting (overwhelmingly possitive vs 1 crybaby) while the ratings were all mid. I should've known better from a 1 star review, they are all just toxic narcissistic Kardashian personalities after all. <<less

While the title and description describe the plot of the story concisely, it misses out on the parts that I would consider most interesting. The story leads into an intelligent drama around politics, where the main character plans "treason". If you aren't into intelligent MCs who plot more than they fight, you might not like this. The story delves into the issues caused when there is a massively incompetent king and the few loyal/capable people left in the kingdom attempt to solve it while also having to deal with a... more>> strong external enemy. As of chapter 28, the author is establishing the world, the characters, and especially the personality of the MC. It's hard to fully judge how the future of this novel will go but the potential is there. Hope it stays as a harem. <<less

some people read it for 5 chaps and call it a day while chads read it thoroughly to understand. We are not the same. Seriously though, some people overhate this sh*t cause it has some unnecessary ntr. While it might be true (i sure hope it doesn't but it does anyway, so that's that), this sh*t is actually good if you've gone past that which meant you need to actually endure for a bit to see the real content of this novel. The ntr was meant to be a bait... more>> to introduce the MC and while this novel does have a simp MC, it was not that bad anyway.

spoilers:

Spoiler

some people think that neira was the one the MC was obsessed with but it's just not true, she was just a pawn the MC use to overthrow the king, and the real heroine wasn't introduced until at least chapter 40/50. While the MC looked like he was using her in reality he was head over heels for her. I might argue that it was a bit much but there's nothing wrong of being in love with someone. I swear all these people who can't stand this is either A. Never touch grass or B. Incels who gave up with women cause "AlL tHeM GUrlS aRE ThE SAmE" mentality. Though I did felt a bit bad for the father of the MC for being cucked lol, but that's a different story, and I don't enjoy the time reading through those but once i've gone past that it was okay.

[collapse]

back to the story, as you must have read or guess, this novel focus heavily towards the political side of things rather than straight up sword and magic and can be a bit boring and repetitive sometimes. It was a breath of fresh air for me personally cause a lot of the stories of this genres got oversaturated and eventually lost the selling it once has for me. If I must summarize this novel, it was basically wannabe light yagami and L fighting each other using their brain and people around them to f*ck sh*t up. Honestly pretty interesting for me but that's just me I guess. It's pretty rare of me to write a comment on this platform but it must be done to set things straight. Personally I would gave it a 4/5 but might as well go with 5/5 to mess with some of y'all

Spoiler

also to clear up some misunderstanding, there was no affair between MC's father with the queen, at least not yet at the time I'm writing this review and please don't worry MC is indeed the child between Crimson (MC's father) and Charlotte (MC's mother). I don't know where all this "MC is a bastard son between the margrave and the queen or a bastard between the margravine and the king" and sh*t came but it was clearly implied that the affair between MC's mother and the king was a one time thing and could be called a r*pe and it does not bear fruit or a child. Also the relation between MC's father with the queen was pretty much nothing and there's zero chance of them having an affair which meant the chance of them having kids is pretty much zero.

This novel focuses more about politics rather than actions and frankly it's getting harder to push myself from reading further than this I was hoping to get more fight scenes from this novel the further I go in.
Spoiler

The MC adamantly wants to ruin his reputation to become an incompetent scoundrel so he can be inconspicuous to the eyes of the empire and to elevate his younger brother to become the future margrave all while he keeps talking about how it's necessary to play the long con to defeat the emperor (I know it's for the sake of winning in the grand scheme of things) but c'mon at least make it interesting by adding fight scenes for the MC now and then, otherwise we'll have to spend another hundred chapters of characters talking about the political climate, superior technologies from the empire, no named side characters treating him like dirt or comparing him with his brother, his relationships with both princesses and reiterating his plans in the umpteenth time.

A political novel that centers around the MC trying to make the one he pled allegiance to, survive.

The setting of the story is a continuation of what would or could happen after the “happily ever after” of a palace love triangle shojou novel, and it’s not pretty, to say the least.
