Jin Jeongeun, the number one hunter in the country, who has been living in hiding, pretending to be dead.

He receives a request from Heero, the current number one hunter he has secretly admired for a long time.

The request is to protect Dasol, the man Heero has a crush on.

Though his body is damaged from injuries and status effects sustained a year ago, Jeongeun accepts the request out of a desire to be with him.

“I will… help the guild leader with his unrequited love.”

After all, he has dedicated his life to the guild, only to end up as a discarded tool. If it’s for his long-time favorite, the great angel who descended to Earth in human form, the pinnacle of god’s creation, the water fairy Heero who captures both innocence and allure…

Discarded tool? What’s one more time, anyway?

Quite refreshing. At least because ML doesn't fall in love first. All the characters feel quite real. MC is pushover-y (in case you don't like this type), but the reasons for his behavior are explained. The relationship between MC and ML is comfortable (at least for now, hope it'll stay that way). It also is nice that attention is being paid to both everyday life and dungeon exploration. I recommend to keep an eye on it.

Status: Completed
A story that could have been dark but is a light and humorous read due to the MC and ML.

The main characters:

The MC, Jeongeun, is someone who has endured so much but still strives to do what is right. He has been treated poorly all his life and has coped with it the only way he knew how: by internalizing it and justifying it. Although he intrinsically knows that how he’s treated is wrong, he never fights for himself, nor does he strive for his treatment to be... more>> better. Him hiding his identity is probably the only thing he’s ever done for himself. He’s kind to others but cruel to himself. He’s someone who would willingly put on a muzzle because the comfort of constraint is all he’s ever known. This seems like the setup for a potentially depressing story, but it’s saved due to the immense love he has for Heero, the ML. All the love that should have been for himself, he channels into Heero.

Heero is someone who also lacks love, but in a different way than Jeongeun. He may come off as shallow, self-centred, and two-faced at first, but it’s his way of compensating for the lack of familial love. He chases romantic relationships like it’ll kill him if he doesn’t have someone beside him. His actions seem infuriating at first, but as the novel progresses, his care towards Jeongeun shines through. He’s willing to rebuild Jeongeun’s confidence and to stand up for him when no one else will. He tries to stop the self-sacrificial tendencies that are engraved within Jeongeun’s bones. I'm really fond of him!

Their relationship:

It may seem one-sided at first, but once Heero falls, he falls hard (despite his refusal to admit it).

I think they suit eachother well. Heero needs the type of stable, unconditional love that Jeongeun brings, and Jeongeun needs the vibrant, passionate love that Heero brings. I think they both had somewhat unhealthy ways of comprehending love at first, and they both help eachother work towards a healthier perception on what it means to love and be loved.

The worldbuilding:

I think the worldbuilding might be the weakest point. I don’t have much to say about it because I think this is a novel that is mostly driven by the relationship between MC and ML. It’s a standard hunterverse setting. I don’t think it's bad necessarily, it’s just not memorable compared to MC and ML (but that could be because I read everything in a day). I do wish there were more found family, because it’s obviously something the MC craves. I think there are definitely some underdeveloped aspects of the story, especially on how MC was treated in the past, that don’t get fully addressed.

Spoiler

For example, it's mentioned that he was mistreated by the hunter organization bureau, but it's touched upon maybe for 1 paragraph near the end? Same with his previous guild. His previous leader was harming him as a twisted sense of protection, but the implications of it is never fully addressed, and his previous leader is kind of let off scott free? Despite everything that she put Jeongeun through.

The translation:

The translation is okay, and I’m really glad the translator took time out of their day to translate it!! However, there are some mistakes that make the readability a bit iffy. For example, Dasol’s pronouns tend to swap ALOT which is annoying for someone who’s pretty relevant to the story. Some terms, like spirit tongue user? Spirit word user? That is always translated differently when it’s supposed to be the same term. This might just be me being nitpicky; it really isn’t that bad.

Overall I liked this novel! I liked it so much I bought all the remaining chapters when I'm meant to be studying for midterms TT <<less
