I can't read any more of this because at this point my blood is boiling. The MC went through the apocalypse and should be AT LEAST cool-headed and a little bit arrogant, I mean she's been killing zombies for decades right? Nope she is just a little puppy begging it's master for money (she even says she could make 100 taels herself easily but nothing ever comes of that). She could be living like a king but chooses to live like a docile animal listening to her betters order her... more>> around, she could show them that she is a force not to be messed with and get all the food she wants but that can't be right this is an Ancient China novel with a Female Lead so she must be an obedient doll for her family and her husband.

Spoiler

She gets no credit for finding the den of traffickers and the excuse from the worthless father about how it would ruin her reputation is completely false. They obviously just want to keep her down because she's a woman and it would reflect badly on him for allowing a woman to figure it out because woman=dumb in Ancient China amirite or am I right?

[collapse]

Spoiler

The worthless father doesn't care about anyone in his family at all and all his feelings are superficial at best. He is garbage and a piece of human scum and the Lu Lady should show him what domineering really means and let HIM become obedient. He deserves nothing he has and at the part I'm at in the story it's *partially* alluded to that Li Xia made him what he is today and she gets no credit for anything she does, while he walks with a pep in step like he's a 'big man' and did something righteous and fair and he DESERVES his promotion. He's a rat in the gutter not fit to be a government official.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Her mother -Aunt Mei- not the Lu lady, will take away the money she rightfully earns and wants to use it for a dowry so when her daughter is sold and married off the husband just gets all the money instead. Almost every scene they are together she pulls on her ear or admonishes her in some way and Li Xia just takes it... SHE JUST TAKES IT, this woman, from the APOCALYPSE, where human life is worth nothing and it's kill or be killed has turned into an obedient little duke's daughter.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The supposedly smart brother Li Hui sees her outside at night suspiciously talking to a guard while smelling like blood and five minute later he finds two bodies, just a coincidence I guess nothing to see here. So far he has had no suspicions of her at all. Again this guy is supposed to be smart and meeting his sister for five minutes and giving her a book might cause him to fail the imperial examination, so her mother comes in with the "do you know what you did wrong" spiel. If the brother is s*upid enough to fail the imperial exam with her bothering him for five minutes then it's only his fault he fails it.

[collapse]

Li Xia has been neutered by 'ancient life' and has completely lost her fangs and claws and has turned into a domesticated cat, she has no pride and takes everything laying down. I understand being a salted fish but even that has it's limits and sometimes you need to retaliate against the no-good father, or the idiotic scheming sister. But no, they are her "loved ones" what a joke. I can only imagine what it will be like with the male lead since she has lost her backbone and will be completely subservient in every way like a good little wife, welcome to Ancient China where good ol' Li Ming has 37 concubines and 600 children because he can't keep it in his pants.

If you want to take blood pressure meds this is the novel for you because there is plenty of points that will make you want to punch the screen with how infuriating it is and I'm not even talking about the usual in urban Chinese Female Lead novels where constantly vicious supporting characters and half-sisters and step sisters scheming to bring down the Female Lead for absolutely no reason. This isn't a dog blood novel and isn't a feel good novel either the only thing you'll feel is your heart rate increasing while you go into cardiac arrest because of the MC choosing to live like a pet. <<less

Not the "reincarnated with superpowers in ancient times" that you are expecting. It's not that it's lighthearted and there are no schemes. However, since the main characters are away from the imperial power, the schemes they usually face are more or less concerned about those treacherous people. It's good but if you ask me what's good, then I can't clearly tell the reason. Maybe it's the FL's character? But sometimes, I'm actually dissatisfied with the FL's lowkey character, all the recognition that should've been hers were put on someone's head.... more>> However, I understand. After all, it's really not good for a female in this era to be powerful (just look at fourth miss Lu). Is it the family ties between them? It's not impenetrable either nor it's really not that touching that it makes you cry. There are biases, the human heart is changing, etc. Was it the ML's devotion? But in fact, at first, there is really no spark between them that I am even wondering who is the ML. Also, it's not like I have never seen such an ML. Therefore, it's really hard to say what I really like about it. Nevertheless, it's a good story. Especially the latter half where the ML was finally recognized. There is more sweetness and the ending, albeit, it saddened me for those who were left behind, the extras made up for it.

But I am the kind of reader who pays attention to every supporting character,
Spoiler

and sadly, aside from the FL's mother and brother, no one was mentioned anymore. Like, what was their reaction about the FL and ML's death? What happened to the orphaned Liucheng? What about the reborn Li Yao? Why did the FL say that Zhou Heng and Qi Niang's love story failed? And the Qiu maids too? How about the reaction of the Li brother and sister? Anyway, there are unfinished stories of them but it's not bad if we're just focused on the FL and ML's ending.

Last thing is, do not read this via MTL. I don't know if they really have similar surnames like the Xu of the FL's mother coincides with the Xu of Old Mrs. Xu, or the Lu of the ML and the Lu of Madam Lu, etc. Maybe it's distinguishable if it's in Hanzi, but in English, it's really very confusing. Moreover, I'm kinda confused with Prince Yongkang's rebellion. It's not like I don't get it, but the plot revolves mostly around it, yet due to the translation, it's kinda confusing. Or maybe my mind isn't just focused on it.

[collapse]

Overall, it's not bad. Not that lighthearted but not that heavy-hearted as well. The FL is OP but not invincible. She is likeable but not a group pet. There are also interesting characters. 8/10. <<less

FL is a powered ability user in apocalyptic times who sacrificed her life to save humanity, and then transmigrated at birth into ancient times as a concubine's daughter.

At the start of the novel, FL is a lazy girl who just wants money to get delicious food (this is because she fought nonstop and ate terrible food in her previous life). Over time, she redevelops her wind-based abilities, saves her family, solves mu*ders, and helps her country.

FL just wants to focus on her little circle of interests (food, and immediate family/friends),... more>> so she usually ignores plots and forgoes credit, until someone touches her bottom line. Her legitimate mother, concubine-mother, and siblings are all very good to her, and their core family is very heartwarming.

The story encompasses her entire life, and the final extra chapters show her

and the ML's further HE in the post-apocalyptic times, when humanity is rebuilding.

[collapse]

The story was interesting enough to read in one sitting, there was a positive tone in the plot, good people had good endings and villains got punished, the ML was always faithful and good to her, and the story always revolved around the valiant FL, which I enjoyed. This is one of the better novels translated by akknovel.
Spoiler

There is a reborn little half-brother, a transmigrated noble miss, and her own ML dreams of their original life in ancient times, but as another review mentioned, everyone gets their just ending.

[collapse]

If you liked valiant FLs who can beat everyone up, like in The Youngest Daughter Chang Le, or Smash All Pots and Pans, or Rebirth of a Star General, I'd recommend this.

On the downside, like many stories, there are time skips towards the end, plotting is described in simple terms and some translation terms are wrong. For example, "concubine" is constantly mistranslated as "auntie", "concubine-mother" is also mistranslated as "Auntie", etc. (Because in Chinese, "Niang" can mean concubine, aunt, sister, etc. Very confusing).

And an explanation of dowries (in ancient c-novels I've read), since it was mentioned in another review: when a girl marries, her family prepares her dowry. The bigger the dowry, the more it shows her status and family backing. Once married, the dowry remains hers. It's not the property of her husband or his family. If she wants, she can choose to use part of her dowry to pay for common family expenses or pass onto her children or not. If she dies, the dowry is still kept separate from the husband's family's assets, and is passed down to her children (ie it becomes part of her daughter's dowry). If she divorces, she takes her dowry with her. If she has no children, her birth family can ask for the dowry back (so the original dowry list was really important). In other novels I've read, if the husband's family steals or uses up the dowry without her permission, it's something shameful and criminal. So in this c-novel, it's not the case that "the husband just gets all the money instead", as one reviewer stated. <<less

Once again a big thank you to the translator for introducing this story. Was too impatient and finished reading raws using google chrome translation.

A very bittersweet ending (more bitter than sweet if you dont read the 2 extras; make sure to read the extras!). At first was annoyed when I read the last chp before the extras but thankfully that wasn't really the end. Although I know it has to end somehow, but still.

Slice of life mixed with action, if you can believe it. Actually now that I think about... more>> it, I myself am not sure what's so interesting about this story or what's so good about it, but all I know is I enjoyed it and am glad to have read it.

There are some mysteries that are never solved (actually the questions were never even asked, but you know they exist) and not everyone's storyline is wrapped up but I guess that's not too important since the rest are just side characters, but there's still a slight feeling of incompleteness. We do get closure for the MC and ML's ending but I somehow wish there was more. Having said that, this ending is probably as good as it gets, even though it's not perfect.

oh yes I was hoodwinked by the summary into thinking that this was a story about a superpowered female vigilante in ancient times but that's NOT what this story is about, FYI, so adjust your expectations. Like I said there is some action but not quite enough and it can be slow-going at times. It was not as exciting or action-packed as I had hoped.

At 257+2 chapters, it's a neither heavy nor light story and takes at least a week to finish if you only read outside of working.

TLDR; it was interesting enough for me to keep going until I finished it with a bittersweet taste left in my mouth, but as for recommending it, I feel like this is kinda niche and not everyone will enjoy it. Still, you can give it a try. <<less

Thank you translator for introducing this story. Loved it very much. The plot is quite simple

Spoiler

The MC is born after sacrificing herself to save people from zombies. So, she doesn't want to do anything but eat, sleep, and repeat. Of course, take away danger if it threatens that or someone close to her. She won't take action unless the other party attacks first, and then she is decisive no matter who it is. There are many trope characters, like her step-brother who is reborn and another character (her cousin through her stepmother or main mother who is a transmigrated character). What I like is that she sees through both especially the bother who murmurs about the past life and she hears it. Basically, you can say this timeline is where he is reborn; our MC was transmigrated in his previous life as well but was not that proactive in helping people, which is why she didn't cross paths with our ML. As for the transmigrated character, she is a typical one bringing thousand and one modern things in ancient times. The ending is sweet, each character gets their just ending, good or bad. Be ready with tissues for the last one though.

[collapse]

I loved the novel because of the MC's laidback character, the main mother Lu who is so different than others. She reminded me of the main mother from Concubine's Daughter Minglang but much more intelligent and practical. The brother-sister dynamics were also good. <<less

It took me a few days after reading this to sort out my thoughts and even as I’m writing this I still don’t think I can fully convey my feelings but here goes:

Overall translation is good. Plot is good with normal trendy styles and decent plot twists to make it unique.

I LOVE the relationships between FL’s legitimate mother, concubine mother, and legitimate older brother and sister. It’s so rare to see genuine family loyalty and affection between legitimate and illegitimate. The father is just hopeless. He’s ok as an official... more>> but overly favors his prime concubine and her kids and can’t see the big picture. He’s not bad per se, more just not emotionally invested in the others.

The FL is truly my hero. Because per previous life was so barren, she truly knows how to prioritize her current life. There are many cases of FL’s having the “Don’t mess with me and I won’t mess with you” personality but hers is just so well written! She doesn’t give you that whole “too lazy to deal with you” only vibe. She truly knows hunger, pain, exhaustion, numbness and death. Throughout the entire novel and till the end, she’s extremely calm because she knows that life needs to be enjoyed where one can and wasting energy on “trivial” things will take time away from another delicious bite, away from gazing at beautiful places and unique things, and spending time with people and making memories. The way she interacts with almost everyone is with that mentality, which makes most people like her. There’s no scheming or looking for benefits, just joking around and sharing food and experiences.

The ML took a while to get together with the FL. Once their relationship took traction it went quite smoothly and he was mega doting. I love how he knew what kind of people some of his family was and didn’t even bother trying to smooth things over. He took a stance from the get-go and told them he was 100% on her side.

The other stand out character for me was Zhou Heng. There was a time when I wished he was the ML. His character toed the line of ambiguity. Subordinate, savior, friend, family... all those roles and feelings where it embodies love in multiple forms but all pure. Till the end one can’t really tell if it was love of the opposite s*x or family or both or none. He was just one of those characters where you wish he could obtain happiness.

Spoiler

The ending drove me a little nuts. It was beautiful how she calmly accepted her ending and how Lu XuanNing went with her but she left behind her child, mother, siblings and friends. I’m getting choked up again as I’m writing this. Many things were unresolved. Her bio mother and brother didn’t conclusively break away from the Wang family. Her stuck up MIL never stopped looking down on her. She didn’t get to see her child get married and so much more. Sure, they both reincarnated back in the original world but didn’t get into much detail about their happily ever after.

[collapse]

Overall, it was an intriguing novel and worth the read. There were a lot of comedic moments, tense moments, painful moments and beautiful moments. <<less

The story was interesting and the familial relationships were the main attraction due to the fact that they were not entirely tropey, but the second half felt a bit rushed in terms of storytelling, a lot of time skips and less focus on the day-to-day interactions that made the first half unique. Still, a protagonist that, while OP, also had her weaknesses, although no truly properly developed balanced antagonists.

I like ancient setting novels. So currently this is my favorite. It is good to see power other than space, female is officials concubine daughter but there is not much dog-blood drama, All siblings (currently 7) have good and okayish relationship except for one. Since Official daughter so no money and husband and children problem till now. MC is foodie but not master chef so no kitchen and restaurant excessive parts. MC come from apocalypse so is lazy and not much bothered to care about other people but is also... more>> not apathetic. MC is just happy to have good and peaceful days. So novel mostly has slice of life and little action. <<less
