In an urban fantasy novel, the protagonist, posing as a false heir, reaches the pinnacle of life by usurping the family lineage of the true heir. He becomes a legendary Dragon King, a war god with numerous admirers. Shen Wang is that unfortunate true heir.

Returning from the cultivation world, Shen Wang gasps in shock. He’s about to be drained of blood and have his soul suppressed by the protagonist, with no chance of reincarnation.

Family affection? That’s less important than his own life. He decisively chooses to flee.

Everyone believes Shen Wang left his family because he couldn’t cultivate, feeling inferior and ashamed. They then see him casually selling shabby talismans and elixirs in water bottles on the street.Bystanders laugh: “This guy must be desperate for money to sell such junk so expensively. Who would buy that?”

Later…

The wealthiest tycoon follows him around, addressing him as ‘big brother’ just for a peace talisman.

The head of a famous Taoist temple respectfully pleads with him, paying a fortune for a breakthrough elixir.

>Using talismans he casually drew, he exterminates a Ghost King. Newcomers to the mystic world kneel with suitcases full of cash in front of Shen Wang, hailing him as a boss.

People even see the number one figure of the mystic world, Gu Dongting, usually cold and aloof, smiling and affectionate with him.

Bystanders are stunned: “Where did this freak come from?!”

They watch in disbelief as the despised true heir soars to heights unattainable by the high and mighty. His biological parents, who hoped the fake heir would elevate their family, are dumbfounded with regret.

Gu Dongting, the foremost figure in the mystic world, is a vision in white, with long black hair, exuding nobility and purity, remote and unapproachable.

A new dark cultivator rises, draped in a black cloak and a ghost mask, concealing his features, embodying both good and evil, ruthless and decisive.

Some observe both men have a deep, ambiguous connection with Shen Wang.

Busybodies stir up drama: “The first of the righteous path and the first of the dark path, whom does Shen Wang love more?”

The debate rages on without conclusion, until it reaches the ears of those involved.

The dark cultivator, with a smirk and a captivating red mole under his eye, asks teasingly, “So, between him and me, who do you love more?”

Shen Wang: “……”

Help, save me, aren’t you the same person? Is there a need to compare?

The romance was good. It was enjoyable reading hoe the MC and ML fall in love and discover their feelings.

Everything was really good but half way through it becomes rushed and awkward and very unpleasant to read at times in particular the nationalism is taken to the extremes with racist views or views of others being lesser than.

Honestly hard to read but I carried on due to the romance it was both well and poorly written at the same time. I gave 4 stars because of all the 1 star... more>> reviews <<less

Started off as just one of those fun face-slapping type of novels, but then...

Reports of racism from other reviewers aren’t exaggerated - it’s bad. I don’t think any nationality is spared from hate and horrible stereotypes, in some ways not even the Chinese, truly repellent writing. Hatred towards the Japanese is the most explicit, with genuinely traumatic past events like comfort women and denial of war crimes being mixed up with a weird dissing of Abe no Seimei and claiming that all Japanese culture is derivative of Chinese??? Really... more>> offensive in a shorter amount of screentime with African people, they’re literally described as monkeys. I’d give negative stars if possible. <<less

Spoilers! Don't read this book, and this is why.

The start is genuinely good, but once MC leave for world competition, it all falls apart.

They are very racist, drugging, homophobic, genocidal, really into China good and killing all others is OK with them.

All foreigners are blonde and blue-eyed, and they are all racist, with the Chinese being poor little lambs. MC pretends he hasn't seen gay people ever, all couple exist to move the narrative only. The foreign gay man is the evil gay character who drugs to get his way.... more>> MC ends up sleeping with his bottom while drugged by a foreigner and by Bottom's special fragrance, but somehow ok since he is attracted to the guy. The "blacks" are used as one-liners on how they are pitiful and are amazed at how beautiful and rich China is in comparison to them. MC can't recognise black faces, but supposedly can read all fate?? Does having a different skin colour cloud the eyes of heaven? The victim complex comes out all throughout the story, mentioned a bit fine, but it's always that the Japanese are cowardly savages, and the Chinese are pure and right this. When Mout Fuji is about to erupt, the whole Chinese nation jears; when MC opens the evil formation in a cemetery, where he knows families, kids and elderly walk, he says they deserve to die for glorifying the soldiers. MC is supposed to be a force of good but has no problem mu*dering all of Japan. They literally say that it's easy to tell who is Chinese or Japanese since one is terrified while other groups are laughing and filming a catastrophe. Hello tourists, do you always travel to countries you hate and have you considered this will kill you too? <<less

It had the potential to be a good story but the ultra China centric nationalism started to wear on me, to the point it was hard to enjoy the bl. This honestly felt like the talking points from a piece of propaganda - the white foreigners stole our relics, the black foreigners are nice & poor but too black, all Japanese glorified the war so we'll sink them, China never did anything wrong, the government is so amazing for having laws & tanks, etc. - Peppered with some cultivation key... more>> words & disguised as a bl to try to make it palatable to the average fujo. Like seriously, did the author get paid by the government? I hope they did, this piece deserves it for how hard the agenda pushing goes.

I skipped through everything after they started raging against the vampires because I was promised multiple personalities romance shenanigans but was delivered an "I love China" badge wrapped in some artificially aged fabric instead. 3 stars for the story before that point. <<less

This novel was pretty good: great story, a slow burn yet satisfying romance, plenty of face slapping and ass kicking. I love the protagonist and make lead's character, both of them come in somewhat shades of gray and the protagonist is so funny. As a staunch lover of the "returns home from another world" trope really hit my sweet spot.

And a spoiler about the romance:

MC is the top! Imagine my surprise when they do it for the first time. As a lover of seme protagonists, u was delighted! And even if you're not a fan, this novel is still a great read and that element is a very small one to the romance.

My one small criticism (it's not a spoiler but I don't want to accidentally dissuade people from reading so only check it out if you want to see.

Spoiler

If there was one criticism I'd have to provide it's that, as is common with most Chinese light novels, the author doesn't know as much about the western world and seems to think most people are extremely racist. The sense of Chinese nationalism is also quite strong at times, which is understandable and there are references to the Japanese war and such which are true but put in quite a lot. The villain is also from Southeast Asia so again, that feeling of China is best comes across. Once again, it's not bad or overly distinct and in the grand scene of things, this was just one part of the novel. There's so much more that's incredibly satisfying. I really enjoyed reading this so I'd recommend you try it out as well!

It's interesting and good, I liked it very much

Face slappings, yes, but the drama doesn't last long

Or idk if it's because I read quite fast, flying through the chapters that I felt that the drama wasn't longer than necessary

The MC and ML

Spoiler

I didn't read the tags so I wasn't conscious of the MC being gong, so it did catch me off guard, but towards the end I remembered, I do remember MC's first time meeting ML, ML was described as a "beauty"

You know, as opossed to usual danmei novels where the ML (when he's a gong) is like tall, handsome, rich... here's MC was desfeibed as beautiful (tho it was not repeated a lot)

I felt it like a nice casusl read with an interesting-ish plot

You should give it a try 😉 <<less

It's a 1/5 star rating for me and let me start off by saying... OMG.

This has to be, by far, the strangest "BL" I've ever read and I mean that in a negative fashion.

It's written like a hetero novel, but severely lacks any of the action that hetero novels will usually have, that fall into the xianxia category.

    • Usually the protagonist will go on adventures, filled with fast paced adventure, action and physical fighting, based on the above observation.
The summary has you believe that this will be filled with cultivation and mysticism but the entirety of this novel seems way too "modern day".

Lastly, BL? Is this even shounen-ai?

    • I honestly couldn't even tell.
To me this series seems solely written to actually spread propaganda on

how "powerful", "strong" and "great" China is.

This novel was initially pretty good, with a slow burn romance. I would rate it around 4 stars initially. However, once it reached the international competition (starts around chapter 130) it brought in geopolitics and Chinese nationalistic propaganda, with extremely racist portrayals, painting other countries in a negative and villainous light, and portraying China as the last bastion of righteousness and goodness. Prior to this, there was some hints of racism (with South East Asia being portrayed to practise morally corrupt cultivation techniques), but it just overall became more extreme.... more>> I couldn't enjoy it anymore, and would rate it 0 stars at that point. <<less

The story is good, but the romance is very slow. The protagonist is funny and does everything for money.

Spoiler

some parts of the story have h*mophobia and similar terms which makes the story a little uncomfortable
