Under the command of the Crown Prince, Laria was forced to participate in an arranged suitor meeting with an unknown person.
Walking into the chaotic arranged suitor event,
The suitor turned out to be Zenox Krassium, the one who had kidnapped Laria!

Three years ago from now,
Unable to transform into a human form within the fox clan,
Laria, a white fox nicknamed ‘Half-Tail,’ succeeded in transforming into a young fox with white and fluffy ears.
It was a joyful moment, but it didn’t last as she struggled to revert to her human form.
It’s during this time that she got kidnapped by Zenox, a black wolf.

“…Little fox. Have you lost your mother?”
“Kyuung!”
‘My mom is doing well! You crazy guy!’

She was forced to live as a pet fox for half a year, eating well and playing, before successfully escaping from the mansion.
Yet Zenox spent three years searching for his pet fox, ‘Whitie’…

“Please help me to find Whitie.”

He even requested help from Laria herself.
She declined politely, unaware that she will end up engaged to Zenox due to the Crown Prince’s interference.
It was a relationship formed through a contract, but still, an engagement!

“I will give you a diamond mine on the day we safely break off the engagement.”
“Can’t we break off the engagement twice?”

Laria eagerly awaited the day of breaking off the engagement.
However, Zenox’s obsession turned out to be stronger than expected.

“I have only one fox.”

Zenox, with the eyes of a hunter who has pursued prey for a long time, whispers.

“I’ll find her soon. I’ve caught her tail, after all.”

She really can’t get caught… Can she?

I liked this book a lot! I struggle with finishing books and I read through this with no problems. Miscommunication is the crux of the tension between ML and FL, but it wasn't annoying to me. Their motivations made sense, so it didn't feel like made up drama.

It was fun having the characters be beastkin. Their animal characteristics pop out when they are overwhelmed with emotions. It could be cute or threatening depending on the situation.

FL's family is very doting and protective (for a good reason). It was great to... more>> see the dad simp for the mom, and the mom support the dad. Very wholesome.

This book has a lot of tropes I like:

-Beastkin

-Cold Duke of the North

-Overprotective and Wholesome FL family

-Fluffy moments btw ML and FL

-Slowly fall in love while in a contractual relationship <<less

Tl;dr: translation is generally good, but the story is almost entirely carried by misunderstandings between the leads that would be resolved with like two sentences. FL is the clueless type.

The translation itself is pretty good. I’ve definitely read better, but this one is 95% fluid and easy to understand I’d say, though there are occasional issues with personal pronouns and sometimes messing up who is being talked about. I also find the term “beastmen” as a way to refer to people who are mostly human but can present physical traits... more>> of an animal, distracting. I think I’d prefer “shapeshifter” or “changeling”, but that’s just a personal preference. So I’d give the translation a 4.5 rating.

The story itself has some interesting points, but poor character development. However the most aggravating is the romantic relationship of the leads. The synopsis led me to believe that ML basically knows that FL is who he’d been searching for, and then romance was seducing her like a yandere-esque “you don’t know that I know who you are and I want to keep you by my side” and she ultimately confesses after getting swept up in the romance.

But no. 60+ chapters in and it’s still a tediously drawn out misunderstanding between the two leads, with my frustration directed almost entirely at the FL who is kinda the clueless type (I hate this kind of FL), who insists on lying. She pretends to not be afraid of the ML’s dark reputation because she thinks his reputation is grossly exaggerated, but she continues lying and dragging out the misunderstanding because she’s scared he’ll be violent towards her when he finds out.

I would have just moved on from this novel 30 chapters ago but I find the ML’s backstory sad and weird and kind of interesting so I want to know more about it. The ML deserves better, so I really don’t care about the romance element anymore and would be happy to read less of the FL in general. Maybe this will change as I read more, but as of now I’m sick of her. <<less

While I haven't gotten very far in the story yet so far I've been enjoying the series.
Spoiler

The start of the series feels a bit off at times, where it feels like the story wants to start by showing the ML as the villain, aka kidnapper, then it switches to them having a good relationship but after escaping she didn't want to interact with him. It might get explained later but at least currently it feels a bit arbitrary. While this might be the case that is revealed later I think it would of been better if they made it that she felt guilty towards him due to accidently stealing the heirloom causing her to avoid him. Right now it just feels a bit unnatural due to them supposedly having a good relationship when she lived with him and her having fond memories, while at the same time her trying to avoid him.

Countering the points in Miriallia's review, since I feel like that review might dissuade readers from giving this a chance
Spoiler

First, while in normal cases it would be absurd for a prince to press two families together we don't have the world building set up. Saying its madness is taking the world building of common novels and applying it to this one without knowing if it applies.
Second, in this novels case I don't think its a political novel, and its more in there for plot devices. While there is "bad blood" between the clans its not like war from what i've inferred. The main scene so far has been at the fox gathering FL attended for the first time where a lot of foxes were talking bad about wolves but the FL did not agree with this viewpoint.
Third, again this is a novel so it does not need consideration to political realities. This is a world where people can turn into baby foxes or have snake scales appear, this novel could easily set up a different culture than our world and many common novels which doesn't make this such unrealistic politics. Now, I don't honestly think that this novel will do that, the politics feel like a plot device to me, but my point is as of chapter 35, which is way further than the 8 in the review, we do not know this kind of knowledge so I think its unfair to judge a novel based on this reasoning.

Now, for the main point which I do somewhat agree with is how the ML set up the engagement. It does feel like it was done in a way that feels very very off for a romance novel. I believe the author somewhat did this on purpose trying to have the image of him being bad for a while, since up to a certain point it talks like ML is a horrible kidnapper before switching to her liking being with him during her time there.
It's later revealed that he is plagued by madness, where he will hallucinate and go insane. Originally FL in fox form & and heirloom helped him keep it under control, and there is a line about how the current FL also helped suppress it. None of the following is explicitly stated, but it can be assumed that he isn't in a good mental state at this point in the story, and there are a lot of hints that he is desperate. While this doesn't defend his behavior, I think it at least hints that this will go away once and as of chapter 35 once past the inital start of their relationships it feels like he became a lot more normal. I think the author just struggled with the set-up and starting up the dynamic of her keeping the secret of being his pet while them having a relationship.

Spoiler

The engagement is very contrived and the way it is presented is absurd. It would be madness for a prince to be able to press two noble families into marriage like that, and a count is a respectable enough position, not to mention that the personal doctor is the sibling. There is also a lot of bad blood between the clans yet apparently a forced engagement is a great way to fix that. No way that could backfire at all, or lead to the FL's family becoming outcasts to her clan.

There is no consideration at all to political realities. It mixes eastern clans with apparently western royalty, yet it all exists to create a chance to force an engagement on the FL, with the ML being the driver behind it despite claiming to the FL he didn't want to marry. He is basically gaslighting her, and that isn't a great start to a romance.
