Summon Survival

What happened to ordinary people when they faced the end of the world? With no power, nothing but their good looks?

Of course their fate was either life or death.

Xu Yang couldn’t remember how many years she had been a zombie. She wandered in the last days, self-conscious but unable to evolve.

Being a zombie didn’t bring her changes compared to when she was still a human.

——How unfair?

But the world is never fair.

When her head was cut off and the crystal nucleus in her head was removed, Xu Yang’s experiences clearly replayed in her mind. Was this a rotating lantern?——No.

She was reborn.

She is going to survive.

Xu Yang: Lu Huixue that holy mother…

Lu Huixue: ??? I’m really not a holy mother!

I like stories with strong capable MC which made me continue reading.

MC is strong, independent, cold blooded and cautious as a fellow fully grown adult who being f*cked by society everyday I understand MC’s indifferent attitude and coldness, when MC is doing badass thing I was like yeah you go girl kill them all.

But as a reader who love romance I feel pity for FL and don’t like MC’s actions towards FL. And i’m stuck at ch 64 basically there’s no chemistry between MC and FL. MC knows FL’s feeling,... more>> so she uses it and keeps teasing FL, sometimes make her cry.

So I recommended it reader who loves action, and badass MC. <<less

Frosty[translator] here~

Well first of all biased 5 star rating!

Now onto the review!

... more>> What I liked main about the novel, So the character are quiet fleshed out especially the XY and LH, their relationship dynamic is just amazing. The slow self–growth of the MC both mentally and physically. And well the system and world building is also quite good too if you ask me.

But there's not that many romantic moments well there a few bits but it's mainly focused on surving and getting through apocalypse and our loner MC trying to trust others and build friendship and relation (I loved this the most)

So yeah I would say' give it a try, Will ya? You might really love it! <<less

This is so freaking fun. The protagonist just doesn't give a sh*t anymore and honestly I won't be able to if I was in her position.

Spoiler

It's so satisfying when Xu Yang kills off the as*hole who abandoned her in her last life. Also her summons just get more and more interesting.

I like the dynamics between the main character and the FL as well because the FL has no clue what's happening but is quite strong whilst Xu Yang is like "I shall tell you nothing" like some sort of batman angst character XD <<less

Read all of it using machine translations and honestly... yeah it was nice. The yuri is secondary and it mostly focuses on the MC's gradual character growth along with the zombie apocalypse stuff. The summons all have their own backstories too and it was interesting reading about them and how it tied in with the MC eventually finding a new meaning to live. She started out just wanting to survive and seeing her grow as a person was very nice. The romance was a little too slowburn and I did... more>> feel it was unfair to the female lead, but the MC had to get over the bad feelings she had towards her in her previous life so I didn't feel it was unrealistic. <<less

If you're looking for a lot of world building, found family surviving in the apocalypse type of plot then this story is for you. The romance between the MC and female lead is very slow and sometimes even sparse but I think that adds a charm to it too. I like how the MC is not overly powered which makes certain stories feel quite bland. They go through their fair share of struggles. There were moments where I pitied the female lead abit bcs of how dry and (lowk) mean... more>> the MC is, but as readers its understandable why she acts as such. Overall, a pleasant read. <<less

The translation quality is okay as there are a lot of grammatical errors.

The story itself has very short chapters and barely any descriptions or world building. It seems to only focus on the two main characters. It skips from place to place and all of a sudden a character talks that hasn't been there and also with the barest of descriptions. It also tells a lot instead of showing.

If you have nothing to read, its decent.

Overall, if you have nothing else to read and definitely give this a shot.

The romance IS scarce and very abrupt at the beginning, and it didn't really make sense to me lol. But it gets more satisfying in the later chapters, and I was begging for crumbs of the MC and FL. It somehow is instant love and slow burn at the same time lol

In terms of the worldbuilding, the apocalyptic/sci fi genre is pretty refreshing if you're used to the more historical ones. And the entire system was really... more>> interesting and fun to read as well.

One thing to note though, the author really loves the side characters (And I do too). It's filled with a bunch of their stories rather than just focusing on the MC and FL. But, I find myself more drawn to the story when reading about theirs.

Now to the endinggg~

Spoiler

It's a reincarnation end ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯. I thought it was super unsatisfying and make their whole journey kinda of pointless ahhhh. The extras make up for it though... I still really love this story 😭😭😭 Just a heads up.

5/10 (Average, not particularly bad or good)

Although it had some potentially interesting concepts, overall this book is a fairly bog-standard action/romance. The FLs start with an interesting dynamic, largely driven by Xu Yang, but the potential is somewhat rushed, and by the latter half of the book, a lot of the unique aspects of both feel artificially removed rather than naturally softened over the course of character arcs. Inversely, the rest of the story doesn't really find its footing until the second half, although it still never really finds... more>> a way to stand out. Side characters are generally introduced too quickly and not given enough time to really shine. This is especially true for earlier characters and summons. With summons, eventually a level of attachment is developed just from how prevalent they are in battles, but overall its not enough, especially since summons tend to be introduced so abruptly. This isn't helped by the fact that action scenes tend to be rather flat, which makes it hard to get attached to summons from their roles in battle.

Spoiler

The main initial hook of the book revolves around Xu Yang's mindset after being reborn back to the start of the apocalypse. Xu Yang is portrayed as being cold-bloodedly rational and extremely distrustful. Lu Huixue is portrayed as being, well, a more normally adjusted human being. The relationship dynamic can be separated into clear parts over the course of the story. Early on, Lu Huixue is attracted to Xu Yang immediately, while Xu Yang doesn't push her away as hard due to her pre-knowledge of Lu Huixue being a good person, and in fact mistakes her for a foolish saint. This arc ends with Lu Huixue losing control in what is later shown to be a berserk state due to her disappointment at how little Xu Yang trusts her along with other compounding factors at the time, and the two briefly separating.

This is mostly an interesting concept and acceptably well executed, but parts are a bit rushed. While it makes sense when looking at the story analytically, it still felt that there wasn't quite enough establishment for why Xu Yang had the original misunderstanding of Lu Huixue being a saint, and the scene where Lu Huixue briefly loses control also felt like it was somehow lacking, in setup or in-the-moment emotions. After reuniting, Xu Yang takes advantage of Lu Huixue's infatuation with her to bring her along as a helper. In theory, this could be an interesting relationship dynamic to untangle, but ultimately nothing much really happens except for the status quo being maintained until Xu Yang realizes that she had actually fallen in love with Lu Huixue. It would've been nice to have either a more clear progression, if the idea was for Xu Yang to be slowly melted by Lu Huixue (this is the case to some extent, as it's mentioned that Xu Yang feels more and more like she can trust Lu Huixue as time accumulates with the two of them working together). It's probably intended to be somewhat abrupt though, as Xu Yang herself found that it happened without her realizing, but considering how complicated the relationship was, it feels like a bit more self-reflection on how her thoughts changed or something similar was needed. Worth noting is that Xu Yang accepting her personal feelings immediately is fine, since it's explained by her decisive personality.

Another thing worth noting is that while it makes sense for Xu Yang's heart to be infiltrated by Lu Huixue over time, and it makes sense for Xu Yang to be attached to her summons as she views them as 'her own' power, later in the book Xu Yang is shown to get attached to side characters as well, which makes sense from the perspective of Xu Yang changing over time to maintain her cold rationality but ease up on viewing everyone else as at best fair weather friends, but it felt like that change wasn't really shown well.

Most side characters, especially early on, are not given enough personality to stand out. It isn't until the last fourth or so of the book that a handful of characters were given an interesting enough personality and enough time to develop or simply demonstrate that personality for an attachment to form. Summons are a bit better off in this regard, as they mostly end up having some aspect to latch onto (even the non-verbal elementals develop a sort of plushie vibe). However, they have their own issues.

Summons suffer from being introduced too abruptly when it usually takes much longer for their personality or trait to solidify into something that can be latched onto. Most summons are introduced with little to no fanfare, and it usually takes two or more whole battles until their 'role' in the combat arsenal becomes fully clear. This means that it's hard to get immediately attached in any way whatsoever, which can cascade due to the importance of first impressions. This isn't helped by the backstory blurb format, where summons are given dedicated segments in which Xu Yang experiences their backstory. While some of these are alright in concept, the format makes the personalities of the summon feel incohesive with the main story, as if the main plot paused randomly for a bit and shoved in a brief side story. This further aggravates the issues with how summons can be hard to get attached to.

I won't go too into detail since I don't consider myself to be capable of offering insights in this department, but an issue both important on its own and preventing attachment to summons is that the battle scenes are not very good for some reason? Something about the way they're written makes most of them feel rather undynamic and unengaging. This means that as 'battle techniques', summons never make you go "oh, now she's going to bring out the awesome technique/summon".

Finally, in general the plot feels like it kind of meanders at the start, without a super clear goal besides getting stronger. It also somewhat feels like concepts are thrown before the ideas can fully settle, going from zombies to mutant insects/plants to human threats to intelligent zombie threats to aliens, etc. This is helped by the fact that the relationship is at its most interesting early on, but there is a period of time where the relationship drama has settled down and the main plot hasn't yet given a direction where the book feels somewhat aimless. As weird of a turn as it seemed at first, the introduction of the aliens did help the book regain momentum after it was established, although it mostly follows a predictable pattern from that point on. Worth pointing out, the alien planet arc seemed a bit too rushed for my liking. It would have been better served diffused out over a bit more of the book, as the revelations and emotional beats felt a bit too fast paced to really work for me.

The story focus more to the fighting than the romance, though that doesn't bother me that much. The fighting scene was nice, the world building is sometimes confusing but you'll get used to it

The romance doesn't starts until 2-3 years? And even when the romance did start, the screen time didn't last that long

The only chapter that's fully romance was the extra chapters
Spoiler

where they reincarnated or transmigrated? Back to the past and dated each other... AND IT WAS ONLY 2 CHAPTER!! DAMN IT AUTHOR!! 😔

Not a bad story, enjoyable read. The MC took a long time to finally start trusting people again, so the first half wasn't very pleasant with the way she's treating people, especially the FL.

Spoiler

though some parts are a bit annoying, like how the MC and FL basically spent everyday outside fighting zombies and mutants yet there are still other people stronger than her, but the ending was great, despite the last villain became overpowered, the MC managed to summon her last summoned beast which was a demon king 🤣, that poor villain... was quite surprised that the MC's system could reset the apocalypse and return time back to before the apocalypse happen, though I wish they all could retain their memories rather than just the MC
