University professor, Li Chengze, was electrocuted to death by a leaky water heater. Unexpectedly, his soul transmigrated into ancient times and he became a scholar with poor character.

This scholar had only touched the water’s surface in his pursuit of knowledge and yet puts on an act of one who is better than others as he dreams of reaching heaven in a single bound.

One day, the Marquis of highest virtue holds a banquet at his residence and the scholar somehow borrows another’s prestige to attend the banquet.

In the Marquis’ residence, the scheming favored concubine’s daughter and the short-sighted and brainless unfavored eldest legitimate daughter battled to survive. The unfavored eldest daughter falls into the lotus pond but the scholar immediately jumps in to rescue the young lady who has fallen.

But woe! The young lady was innocent, but could only be kicked out by the Old Matriarch and pushed onto the scholar from a very ordinary family.

The concubine’s daughter had won a victory, and the eldest daughter could only cry her heart out!

On the day of their matrimony, the scholar was knocked unconscious by his angry wife with a porcelain pillow! When he woke up, his face may be the same but now the serious Professor Li lay within his shell.

After being single for most of his life, Professor Li squinted his eyes as he wore his poker face that had been perfected for over ten years. Which student wasn’t afraid of this poker face of his?

The eldest daughter’s imposing manner withered at once.

Li Chengze’s brows pinched tightly.

Seeing an adolescent girl who was in junior high at most in front of him, he felt his head ache.

– A what appears to be a gentle yet educated scholar on the outside but is really a scheming professor on the inside X the eldest daughter who’s been raised to be silly and headstrong

– Love after marriage

– A young gentleman teaches his wife.

Professor Li: A rebellious student who has not been taught correctly from the start must be broken down to their roots and built back up.

Gu Qingci: Wuwuwu, when will my husband consummate our marriage?

I'm bad about leaving reviews because I'm not concise at all, but to counteract one that is a bit... biased...I figured I should leave one for this.

Is it great literature? Not really. It's even unfinished. The end is SUPER abrupt and some side storylines aren't really wrapped up. (Like the cousin/princess cp.) But it's still a lot more readable than loads of stuff on this site.

If you've read slower, almost slice of life-ish historicals, then you basically know what you're getting with this. Except the MC is a man.

Yes, he... more>> shows up to a not even fifteen year old wife instead of being the fifteen year old wife. But it's hard to find a Chinese historical that doesn't use realistic ages for the times. Not that I'm condoning it, just saying that if you find it offensive or something you can't change in your brain (I.e. rewriting her age as 18), the genre is probably not for you.

At the very least, he's not a creep setting out to make a loli harem. He spends the first half struggling between his modern morality and the expectations of the times. He knows it puts psychological pressure on his wife not to consummate their marriage or have a baby, but he puts it off for at like a year for the former and a year and a half or so for the latter out of consideration for her age and body. (And neither were planned.)

again, not saying it's ok in a modern context, but this is fiction, and historical fiction at that. I don't see a lot of male MCs show much consideration for such things, so at least that's refreshing.

As for the revenge aspects, and the main reason for this review...

this isn't a rebirth revenge novel? The MC isn't an assassin from the future. He's not a psychopath. He's a university professor. It's honestly strange to me when I see reviews of anything where people are upset that the characters don't slaughter any and all eyesores.

If someone pisses me off, I don't kill them. Most modern people don't jump to mu*der as a catch-all solution. Not all historical Chinese novels are revenge novels. There's plenty of slow slice of life ones. (Even ones where the male leads really were once assassins—and they don't kill every minor villain that pops out.)

expecting one genre to be another isn't the fault of the novel.

This guy is lower middle class in ancient China. He was a modern professor. He doesn't have the background or skills to slaughter his enemies and get away with it. Let alone one of his enemies is a prince.

He remembers all slights and takes actions within his means, even if that's just passing along information to someone with greater ability.

Is that always the most satisfying course? No. But it's more realistic than killing everyone with impunity.

So, for the novel itself... it's okay? Not amazing not terrible. Some things are clumsily handled. Especially transitions. A few times I felt like I'd missed a chapter. And the foreshadowing was weak for some events. Even a line or two earlier on could've erased the sense of disbelief at certain actions. And that ending... oof. It reads like an earlier work that hasn't gotten the mechanics down perfectly. But again, better than a lot of webnovels I've read.

For a comparison, it's similar in vibe to Lady of Fortune, Jiao Niang, only without the fantastical aspects. But the silly, naive female MC with a male MC who is slowly building up his family and finances outside are in the same ballpark.

TLDR; this is a slower historical with a non-op male MC and not much revenge. If that's not what you're looking for, then don't read it. If you want perfect prose, this isn't it. Otherwise, it's fine for a quick read if you like the genre and don't need something new and revolutionary. <<less

Look, the MC is not only an insensitive moron of a man, but also a s*upid floormat.

He continually lets people scheme him or force him to do stuff without ever getting revenge.

His wife was almost r*ped by two men and he didn't act immediately to kill the villain.

... more>> No, he had his servant send the guy to be r*ped by Chinese rapist men? Somewhat unclear.

Throughout the novel he is simply on the receiving end and never seems to have the brainpower to just kill his enemies or eliminate the threats to his life.

He definitely fails to protect his wife, continually letting her get fevers and the like, almost lets her get poisoned, almost kidnapped, etc and only makes it through unscathed by the author’s moronic plot armor.

Simply a frustrating novel to read because the author’s idea of MC showing emotion is to ‘sneer’ or say he’ll get revenge.

spoiler: he does not get revenge on Gu family, barely manages to take to Su Ziyan, can’t handle villainous first big prince, can’t deal with evil 3rd princess etc.

Guy also narcistically keeps thinking he’s being so ‘kind’ to the underage girl he wants to have s*x with.

=_= so he’s also an old creep. Sigh.

Look, it may seem harsh but this novel simply isn’t that great.

Sigh. <<less

It was really a 7 out of 10. Was there romance? Yes. Was there character growth? A bit. Was it amazing? Nop.

I would start with the ML, he is said to be a 40 yo man, single, and a college professor. The synopsis makes you believe he sees the wife of ancient times as his student but in reality? He's kinda in denial that he likes her, because she is 15. I mean, it is a bit disturbing to see a 15 x 40 couple, and even in their reality,... more>> he is 20 and she is 15. In no other novel I've read, the ages are so obvious. In part, it's because he acts too much like a parent than a partner. Their relationship is too vertical, in the sense that he is the protector, and she is the one being protected. Is it cute? Heck yeah. But for 140 chapters? No! It's cute that he teaches her not to be a rude brat, but it also shows how apart they are from each other. And what does she show her? Maybe~ how to be indulgent? Like, it's missing something.

Their relationship goes like this: She does a bratty thing, he scolds her with a cold grin and a sensible speech, and she gets all shivery like a Chihuahua and then becomes domesticated. When she gets in this shape, he then proceeds to hug her in his lap, pamper her with kisses, and tease her with a gentle smile and low voice. Honestly I kinda dig this trope of Hot And Cold but don't get me wrong, this is the ONLY romance there is in the novel! I'm tired! I want more! Why! This title says Married Life! You can't just hug her! Do more!

And FL is kinda with me in this. This is the thing, they're married. They're expected to have kids, but the ML has a bottom line, he obviously doesn't want to roll in bed with a minor, and I get that. Honestly, I believed it, because of the synopsis, which is very misleading, because... he kisses her. Like, a lot. And in like, chapter 15. He desires her even when he doesn't love her, but he refuses to take the last step because of morality and stuff, right, but then he gets all h**ny saying, 'she doesn't understand men, for her a kiss is fine, she doesn't know a kiss for a man is only the appetizer' and I'm like Excuse me, Sir??? Are you the same guy who just said you're not going to mess with her? Get it together! This man is so confusing!

Even when they did the deed, he still gets her to drink the birth concoction, so as to not get her pregnant, saying it was for her health, so she doesn't get cold and so. That did not sit me right. In moments like this, you can see how they're not a partnership. Were they in love? Man, I don't know, but it's really not my idea of romance, which I guess is the problem here. The love felt too superficial, too little, a bit performative even.

About the plot. Is there even any? There are a bunch of threads that you can pick, but they do not necessarily lead you to a satisfying ending. For example, we never see the politics, ML is said to be part of the Third Prince faction, but we never see him speak facts, or go queen, you know? We're just told he is awesome. His mother is an awful mother-in-law, the instant she knows of FL's existence, she is already having vicious thoughts. The grandmother-in-law is partial to his grandson since chapter zero. The father-in-law appears ten times in the whole 140 chapters, he's like a ghost. The characters felt too stiff, too wooden, and too fake. They have no vigor, no feeling. You read them and can guess all their thoughts and past. Have I said that the ML goes poor to rich with watermelon seeds? Like, bruh. He is also a writer, though. So yeah, it's a 7 out of 10 for me.

If you've read other great novels like Virtuous Wife, then I'm guessing this novel is not on your level nor in your preferences, and will only make you feel stifled, lol. So read smt else then.

P.D: I read 7starkiller99 comment, and can I just say: x2. Man, this MC was one of the most useless I've read! He was a bit like... too much noise and not a lot of balls, u get it. <<less

translation looks great so far!! I've seen the other reviews of this novel which makes me quite sad, but hopefully it'll be okay. I think it's a matter of subjective opinion on whether you think a character is good or not. To be fair, I feel like a lot of historical romance novels require that male leads are: 1) possessive, 2) powerful, 3) always taking revenge on behalf of their loved one and 4) very ambitious/strong personality. Or But in reality, not all male leads or characters fit these traits,... more>> like men don't always have to be the most powerful, or strong, they can be weak, timid too! I think whether you like this novel will depend on your own preferences, but I'm more than willing to give this a chance!! Hopefully the bad reviews do not turn away potential readers as I feel bad for translator-sama : (( <<less

Good novel. Its a pretty standard transmigration novel. Not too much drama and conflict, so I think this novel is suitable if you want a light read. However, the ending is super abrupt lol. Im confident that it is not actually completed. Maybe the writer just gave up on it after chapter 142, or maybe it is mistakenly tagged as completed.

I am done. FL is so so so dumb. There is a level for native and dumb she is later. Emotional, uncontrollable, doesn’t think, her character doesn’t develop at all.... more>>
Spoiler

she got plotted by her step sister once ok native. Second almost kill her child and now give her fake letters she ffff doesn’t doubt or ask at all and trust that letter and try to k**to ml. I lost I seen a lot of no brain FL but this this too much. Don’t like ML as well. First ok. You freaking have one job control your family nope he left huge variation unsolved like rebirth villains and his mother.

[collapse]
ML don’t revenge for FL not even revenge can’t even protect her. No wonder he doesn’t got married in first life only dumb will marry selfrighteousness male chauvinist. Phew my chest feels much better. 2 stars for author effort. <<less

Five chapters into the story and it finally got to MC’s side of the story + wedding night. Why does it take so long? I want to know MC’s view points way more than his mother, or grandmother or aunts’ view points on these matters. Even if there are other characters’ thoughts, please don’t take up the whole chapter! *sigh* I’m just a little sad that it takes 5 chapters to finally meet our MC...

But other than that, this story is okay.

The story are good for it's quick pace and not have so many filler like any other that have hundred chapters.

ML is ok, he is an adult man before transmigration, FL is bad tempered at first but gradually have a good changed.

I read the mtl so could only understand 50% about the story. But I still could get the general understanding between the ML and FL. ML is adult inside and because of this he is a responsible man and quite doting on FL. FL is stubborn at first but... more>> gradually matured. They have good understanding for each other.

I give 5 star because despite I mtl-ed it, I'm quite enjoy reading it. <<less
