The Fifth Young Lady of the residence of Marquis Chang Xing was wrongly carried away upon birth and the daughter of a farmer became a Young Lady by accident. The real daughter of the Marquis residence lived amongst the commoners and suffered for thirteen difficult years.

On the thirteenth year, Chu Jin Yao finally returned to her biological parents’ side. However, the awkward thing was that Mother disliked her for having vulgar manners and wholeheartedly loved the previous ‘daughter’. Even Grandmother could not bear to send the granddaughter she had doted on for thirteen years back to the farming family and made the decision to allow the fake daughter to stay on and continue to be the Young Lady of a Marquis lineage.

Chu Jin Yao, who grew up in a poor family, was out of place in the Marquis Residence. After yet another hindrance from her younger paternal cousin sister, Chu Jin Yao was shedding tears in her room when she discovered that her jade pendant could speak.

Her jade pendant had a bad temperament but would heed to her complaints, help her in the residence battles and provide her guidance to oppress scums.

It wasn’t until one day when Chu Jin Yao had an encounter with the infamously violent Crown Prince.

“Speaking of which, you might not believe but my jade pendant spirit looks exactly like the Crown Prince.”

I have read this novel and let me tell you that this is good.

The MC have character development, including the ML. I love the author of how she builds up the connection between them.

Plot wise, it's good. Politics, marriage, and the way MC changes after she became a noble. She treated ML as her mentor and it slowly changes when they get married. She have flaws and she acknowledge that.

The ML could be said that he have a resolute and cold character. He started to change his POV when he... more>> met MC. He teaches MC of how to manipulate a situation, and read other people, those skills from the back palace. I really learn a lot from him though.

There are also other characters that really earn my recognition.

If you want to read this in raws, don't worry it's very understandable.

I know that it's a shitty review but trust me, this novel is worth the free time that you have. <<less

The Crown Prince in the Jade Pendant is made of a lot of overused tropes such as switched at birth, jealous scheming sisters, selfish overly pragmatic elders, arrogant and s*upid princesses and noble ladies, an indifferent powerful prince, a useless and lustful Emperor and a calamitous beauty, etc but still manages to weave a beautiful story. It's a perfect blend of slow-burn romance, not overly complicated politics, and social intricacies.

Why I recommend this novel:

  • Smart but not OP female lead
  • FL can be decisive when dealing w/ enemies but not vengeful and malicious
  • Character growth
  • Satisfying slow-burn romance
  • Romance with a little uncomplicated political intrigue
  • Sisterhood
  • Easy to read
For a more detailed review:

Female Lead: Chu Jin Yao. Her situation is similar to the FL from Return of the Sparrow, wherein she [FL], the biological daughter who grew... more>> up outside the family, was not loved by her biological family. She is probably one of my most favorite c-novel protagonist alongside Ye Huaiyang, Hua Liuli, Zhu Yiyi and Yu Xiang. Throughout the story, you will see her growth from a cautious, timid, and insecure girl to a self-composed and intelligent woman. She is sincere, tenacious, and hard-working. You just can't help but want to root for her. Her self-awareness, rationality, and insight makes you feel bittersweet.

First of all, you have to remember, she grew up in a peasant family. She neither went through rebirth or transmigration, nor did she have a cheat system. At the beginning, she was only 13 years old. The education noble ladies receive since they were old enough to understand, CJY had to learn in 2 years. What she got, she got through hard work. I'd say she did a good job, even though she was never exposed to the sophistry-laced words and schemes of noble ladies. If you're expecting Shen Miao level of scheme here, then you're in the wrong book. CJY didn't want vengeance. She just wanted to live the life that was unrightfully stolen from her. I think her decisions are actions are quite realistic.

Male Lead:
Spoiler

Qin Yi, the "soul" in the jade pendant was her only true friend. Aside from teaching her etiquette and calligraphy, he was also her 'jade' to cry on. He is the Crown Prince, the only son left by the deceased first Empress. Betrayed by two people he respect, he developed an aloof and indifferent personality. However, I don't consider him as cold-hearted. When he was trapped in CJY's jade pendant, he could have stayed quiet but he chose to comfort this girl who was hiding her tears. Although he did have his own agenda later, I felt his sincerity in helping CJY. He's closed off his emotions to protect himself so it took some time for him to realize his feelings for CJY.

[collapse]

Falling in love: FL and ML were with each other during a vulnerable period. They were each other's first love but it did not sprout out of nowhere, and they didn't go from acquaintances to lovers in an instant.

Spoiler

"I will always be with Your Highness. Wherever you are, I will be there." (CJY, stop being so fluffy)

I'm usually not a fan of slow burn romance. Oftentimes, I get too impatient and just drop the novel. It's different here. I got a rare satisfaction from watching CJY and QY turn from forced companions to friends to husband and wife, and eventually just two people in love. I believe CJY did have feelings for Qi Ze, but she had to bury it because she thought it's impossible between them (she thought he's cultivating to be an immortal). Towards the Crown Prince Qin Yi, she felt indebted towards him, and was resigned to be a virtuous and reliable Crown Princess. I think when she found out Qin Yi was Qi Ze, she has two conflicting feelings: gratitude and like.

On the other hand, we have Qin Yi, groomed to be the future Emperor, and ignorant to emotions. He always had an excuse for his actions towards CJY. Married her as his Princess after she was demoted to become a side concubine for Lin Xiyuan: "I just want to fulfill my promise".

He was reluctant to admit that a woman could affect his emotions, that "like" his Father, he would be willing to indulge a woman. But then you read these little moments from his POV such seeing the fireworks in CJY's eyes, how her eyes are more brilliant, or teasing CJY (messing up her hair, pinching her cheeks). He's like a teenager (which he is) who's falling in love for the first time. Later, CJY becomes more and more dependent towards him. Her warmth, innocence, and kindness slowly let him open his heart. He was scared of his feelings for CJY because he didn't want to be confused like this father but towards CJY, he truly had no chance. "When he finally realized all this, he was already and utterly defeated".

"Your Highness, I will definitely grow up so that I can stand shoulder to shoulder with you." QY doesn't have that arrogance or superiority complex over CJY. He talks to her about everything, including politics because he sees her as his equal, not a possession nor a trophy. He let her grow instead of treating her like a canary.

Antagonists:

Spoiler

Empress Xiao Qi. If I have one word to describe this woman, it would be "disgusting". She is a big tr*sh sl*t. I would have understand her actions if she had no other choice but no, she's a pampered daughter of a prestigious family (Marquis Zhenbei), and sister to the (former) Empress. She probably would not have a hard time marrying into another noble family but she chose to seduce her older sister's husband while acting like a loving aunt to Qin Yi. She had s*xual interc**rse with her sister's husband right before her sister's sick bed. She destroyed Qin Yi's childhood. If that isn't disgusting, and lowest level of sc*m, I don't know what is. After driving her sister to her death, she had the audacity to act like an aunt-mother (*puke*) to Qin Yi, all the while plotting to steal his Crown Prince position for her son. I think she deserved worse than what she got tbh. In an alternative timeline, I hope QY's Empress Mother goes through rebirth and make her tr*shy younger sister live a life worse than death.

Chu Jinmiao- Another snake. I would have tolerated her after all, it's not her fault her biological parents decided to ruin the life of an innocent child just to have her live prosperously. Unfortunately! Chu Jinmiao is jealous, selfish, malicious, prideful, and everything BAD. She grew up safe, wealthy, and monopolized her mother's entire love yet she's not content. She constantly compares with Chu Jin Yao, schemes and fails, and blames CJY for her punishment. She's an annoying c*ckroach that just won't die.

Chu Jinwan - Sixth Miss of Chu. I thought she would have been a challenging opponent to our MC. She's smarter than Chu Jinmiao. A true venomous snake, she could have had more potential as a villainess. Unfortunately, it seems as if the author had forgotten her, which is understandable given that her father is shu born it would be difficult to incorporate her to the latter half of the story that focuses on palace intrigue.

[collapse]

About the Chu family. The only character I like from that rotten family is Chu Jinxian.

Spoiler

FL's biological mother: At first, I wanted to understand why Zhao-shi was indifferent to her biological daughter and biased towards her fake daughter, because she was the one to accompany her for 13+ years after all. I would have been disappointed if she casts away the fake daughter just because of blood connection however, I see her as narrow-minded and unreasonable. She's not a good mother towards her own two biological daughters. I hate her blatant favoritism.

I can't forgive the biological brother and mother's blatant favorism towards Chu Jinmiao. You don't know how satisfying it was when FL finally put them in their place.

A really good book with interesting characters. Both the ML and the MC are intelligent, and a good judge of situation and character. As the previous reviewer said, both had character development which was realistic. The villains are average I will say; the girl who replaced her behaved like an idiot and what I liked is that

Spoiler

the MC was decisive in dealing with her when she betrayed her and her elder sister and left to die. She was killed immediately without any drama as it should be. The mother on the other hand was the worst character available.

TLDR: 4 stars is very generous, the story is a very rough read downright painful in places and it frequently fails in what it sets out to do

Where the novel succeeds: It captures a woman's life in ancient China much more realistically than 99% of the novels you will find on Novelupdates. The heavy restraints of family, custom and limited ability to act are well portrayed at least for the MC. The antagonists are able to seemingly ignore thew at whim.

Where it fails: First and foremost the writing. This novel... more>> has some of the most painful writing I have ever seen. Example, in the dialog questions are asked and then have half a chapter of exposition before they are answered. What's worse it's really pointless exposition. There's also the problem of scenes not being well. People appear without being introduced, location and pov swap often swap without any cues the change is occurring.

As painful as the writing is, the biggest failure are the plot/political intrigue. They just don't satisfy. The mysteries are solved by "aha I knew it all along", when the plots are foiled there's no backlash. The only response is let's let this fester until it gets really bad.

Bottom line, if you want ancient China done right it's a good idea to look a little longer <<less

Even after finishing this through MTL, this gave me satisfaction. The Novel is filled with ups and downs, the first half concentrates more on the FL struggling to fit in and survive in her home, whereas the the second half concentrates more on Imperial struggle and the FL adapting to life in the Palace.

Although this concentrates more on the FL, I have come to love and appreciate not only just FL and the ML but various side characters as well as they all have subtle character developments ... more>>
Spoiler

Apart from the dumb villains, who are just infuriating. Since the ML is the Crown Prince, we see lots of girls trying to climb up the social ladder, but none of them are smart (I'd be having high blood pressure if they were so I'm not complaining). Coupled with the most horrible mother (s) I've seen, be it the FL's mother or the Empress, both women are just horrible people. Although FL's mother not only gets her retribution but at the ends finally seems to become less hateful, but still I can't just forgive that woman. It's like this author has a peculiar pattern in all 3 of the novels I read yet, where none of the leads have good/alive parents, so they become each others only direct family.

[collapse]

I also really appreciate the ML, his character is well developed and actually in tune with his position.
Spoiler

And I love how it takes him time to actually open up even after the marriage, like he's the Crown prince and so he has grown up in the Imperial Harem and seen everything, so he knows exactly how horrible it is to let women or anyone for that matter control his emotions and feelings. So, despite that he actually really likes the FL, he takes his time to settle his emotions and take things slowly. I also like how he too seems to be a little insecure as he kind of 'robbed' her lol and thinks she might regret. (I think she was more happy to be robbed but oh well).

[collapse]

Well, if you're into some boudoir and imperial Harem stuff coupled with political intrigues, well written romance, some satisfying face slapping topped with some great character development then just read on.

I would really thank the translator for picking this up, they translated one of my favourite novels Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage (which is an absolute must read!!!) And so I have high hopes for the translation of this too! <<less

Apparently, the author's Greetings, Ninth Uncle novel came after this one. At the end of that novel, the author mentioned they got tired of writing the political intrigue, and the FL and ML of that novel resolved it relatively effectively, a little bit too efficient for my liking. I was somewhat disappointed, but after reading this I realised... yeah the political intrigue and scheming in this novel is insane. It's fantastic and featured so many things I would have never expected!

Crown Prince in the Jade Pendant is somewhat similar to... more>> Greetings, Ninth Uncle in some of its plot points and beats, in which the ML is the eldest son and the crown prince with a weak Emperor of a father and unhappy family dynamics. Similarly, the female lead Chu Jin Yao also has unhappy family relations, and is set back even more than Cheng Yujin of Ninth Uncle due to the fact that she lacked the upbringing of a noble girl. Also, in the end, ML is the one and only person who cares for her well-being.

I like that Chu Jin Yao is aware of her flaws and works hard to catch up with them. She was also cared for by the adoptive older sister she had, and I wished she had visited that sister again after the sister chose to cut ties with her to protect her after Chu Jin Miao, the evil sister who had swapped with her decided to sabotage Chu Jin Yao's marriage chances. The world was truly unfair to Chu Jin Yao, so much so that ML was the best thing that happened to her.

The relationship between the couple is relatively good!

Spoiler

At first, the male lead did not intend to marry Chu Jin Yao, because he knew that being Crown Prince Consort would expose her to many dangers. His route to the throne is fraught with danger and he could not risk her. So the best he could do was give her gifts so that she can live a normal life as his subject. But, shenanigans by Chu Jin Miao ruined Jin Yao's marriage chances, where Chu Jin Yao would be forced to become a side wife rather than a main wife. This was practically an insult to her lineage, because she is birthed from the main wife, why is she expected to be a side wife? The family thought that Jin Yao was unfilial to her adoptive parents and feared her because of Jin Miao's plans. Even the boy Chu Jin Yao was about to marry was disappointed by his family because he genuinely liked Jin Yao.

Qin Yi then chose to marry her and save her, and Jin Yao chose to devote herself to him, and this was way before she realised that the spirit who used to be in her pendant = Crown Prince. He finally dropped the ball on her when he realises she is still clueless on their wedding night, by introducing him the same way he did at the start of the novel. It was SO wholesome as Jin Yao gets the flashback to her first meeting with her, and she starts crying on the spot. She had been feeling so inadequate and lonely since he left, and for her to realise it has been him all along makes her determined to step on the same boat as him and fight with him till death do them apart. I love it. She was willing to just die so she doesn't become his hostage and it's just chef's kiss how they love each other and communicate and care for each other.

[collapse]

Overall it's a fantastic read! I enjoyed it because the characters are relatively nuanced, and real consequences come from the decisions they make.

Spoiler

For instance, Chu Jin Yao could not get rid of Chu Jin Miao completely because Jin Miao abused the relationship she had with her mother and older brother just to get back to the capital. Then, they isolated her after CJY bluntly scolded her brother about the reality of their position. However, Chu Jin Miao decided to show up and sabotage Jin Yao's life when the enemies tried to capture Chu Jin Yao as a political hostage. It's not that CJY did not want to kill her, but she couldn't be bothered, and it concerned her family reputation if she did something outrageous considering her position was not stable as the Crown Prince Consort. Naturally, CJY had her executed after a close shave with death and Qin Yi coming to save her.

Another example is Qin Yi, the Crown Prince marrying Chu Jin Yao. He tells her bluntly that there will be many people trying to hurt her, and he can't protect her all the time. Indeed, Chu Jin Yao faces a LOT of sh*t in the palace, namely the stepmother empress, and many other girls who feel that she doesn't deserve the spot. CJY works hard to learn how to scheme and at least preserve her life, as well as not wanting to drag him down further. Qin Yi naturally helps her all the way as well as her steady pillar of life. They truly do care for each other and I live for it.

I like it. Enjoyed it a lot. The main fault with this couple is that they're too kind or passive. Compared to the usual characters who'd rather kill the innocent than let go of the guilty, they'd only respond moderately or defend themselves. Which is humane for sure but the cannon fodders do jump around a lot. But it's nice to see them be merciful at least.

If you're looking for:

    • scheming evil concubines and empress
    • s*upid, idiotic, useless, sh I tyy and blinded by lust emperor
    • unfathomable, gullible mother and brother
    • Jealous sisters
    • ungrateful btch of a "sister"
    • opportunistic family
then, this my friends is for you.

While I have listed negative adjectives to the characters, this is precisely the reason why you should definitely read this! The face slapping and in-your-face moments are too good you would probably lose sleep just to finish this!

The following might be a common ingredient in a lot of CNovels but when done right, it will give you a different type of satisfaction.

I have just finished reading this and I could still feel my heart up in my throat. The last 20 chapters were so intense that my adrenaline was on high the whole time that I had to go take a break by watching cute videos in youtube or something.

I finished this via MTL which is a bummer but seeing the translator who picked this up, I'm having high hopes coz they have one of the best quality translations around.

More like 3.5/5

I liked it but I just couldn't make myself like the fl. I was wondering why (because there were moment where I was like "you go girl"), but I finally figured it out why.

To put it bluntly; she seems like the type that would become the villainess herself without the support of the ml. If the villainess in the story acted better or just indifferent, I think she would be the initiator to the fights.

She has good qualities but when you put everything together, it just smells of... more>> disaster: prideful and stubborn to the point of s*upidity, naive and sincere but with no skills to deal with people who have bad intentions. Vengeful but gets portrayed as "seeking justice". And at the same time she does have cleverness but this gets nullified in the weirdest moments

Spoiler

Like when she didn't get that the crown prince is the jade spirit until he told her himself.

Like, are you kidding me? Everything pointed to that but the only counter argument of "he was at the border at that time" and "it's an insult to think of the royal family like that" somehow made it possible for her to throw that possibility away? Where did that "cleverness" go? Out of the window apparently.

All the pro arguments: looking exactly the same, similarities in their actions, all the hints that he gave when he was still the spirit like him teaching her palace etiquette, him talking casually about them, him knowing so many things about the royal family and other things. Besides that, the crown prince fulfilling her wishes like giving her a store and many pricey brocade. And last but not least: the crown prince being especially nice to her when he doesn't even pay attention to other people.

All this was thrown away because of "he was at the border at that time". Like you yourself or people around you have seen him at the border jumping around personally. Biggest bullsh*t ever.

[collapse]

If the ML wasn't there, these qualities of her would've corrupted her. Because these qualities (most of them) can be good on their own or even together if it's measured, but that isn't the case here.

Just imagine her with these qualities in a parallel universe where a modern person transmigrates in the girl that was wrongfully taken as their daughter (aka, the villainess). This person wouldn't mess with the original fl. Because of that, the FL wouldn't be wronged so much to the point that the crown prince would show himself (probably). And then you'll have a girl with all those qualities and no "perfect" teacher. She will compare herself with the "villainess" the whole time. Like your typical isekai novel where villainess gets reincarnated

And add to that, the fact that all the progress of the main couple in the most fragile period, was because of coincidences the whole time made me kind of pissed. Because if just one moment wasn't there or a slight change, there wouldn't be a main couple. It's like this often but at least the progress is pushed by one of the 2 (because one of them realizes they want the other). That makes it more stable. But in this one it's so unstable its kind of funny

Spoiler

- FL having the jade pendant where the ML recided in until his wounds would heal. -≫ if she lost it somewhere, these 2 wouldn't have met at all.

- she crying because of injustices to the point where the ML had to show himself. -≫ like I said before, if the villainess wasn't that bad, ML wouldn't really have a reason to come out. So they would never interact

- she being forced to be a concubine so the ML taking her as his official wife. -≫ she would be married to the shizi if the villainess didn't take her adopted parents there that day or if the parents couldn't make it there.

Just one small change to the three major "progress" parts, and we wouldn't have a main couple. As they both didn't even know their feelings. Too fragile of a progress in my opinion

I really liked the novel. The character development is very prominent for both ML and FL. The politics, the emotional aspects and the grievances are really on point. The best part of the story is that, and as the author also commented, the conflict are only from external sources, it’s enough that they’re in love and trust each other, no need for some tricks in between. It’s a story about two people facing the world.
Also very MTL-ablle.

Spoiler

My only problem with this novel is that some parts was missing some fireworks. Like the resolution with Chu Miao and the throne, I think it was pushed so far into desperation that there’s only one move to take. Tho I did get that it was more of emotional aspect and realizations in life why the first arrow went where it did, but I guess I was hoping for a giant scheme. But the characters are very down to earth and close to real life so I guess it makes sense.

Spoiler

I it my greatest wish to have the author make Zhao mother face the real Chu miao, sadly until the end, she thought of her as some kind of pitiful saint.

Cannot recommend this enough! I love reading historical novels, and this one is one of the best I've ever read.
    • The relationship between the ML and FL is beautiful, and I love that it's not that the ML "fell in love at first sight" because FL is "different to the other girls". Their relationship has so much depth, and unwavering trust. I love the way it develops from companions to husband and wife. ML and FL were also not annoyingly OP! They felt human, and there was tangible character development. Beyond just the FL and ML's relationship, the author really managed to capture the complexity of human relationships and familial ties.
    • I'm not usually a fan of political themes, more of a romance person, but it was integrated seamlessly into this novel. It never felt boring or dry. In fact, I loved the political intrigue! And it wasn't overpowering. Plenty of romance.
Frankly I could go on and on about what I enjoyed about this novel, but I'm just going to leave it at this.

Really appreciate the translator and all their hard work! High quality translation, seriously.

I read the rest of the novel through MTL (which was very readable), but will definitely be back to re-read as it gets translated!

11/10! Don't hesitate!

Surprisingly good considering all the cliche c-novel tropes this story used. It's pretty enjoyable though frustrating and draggy at times (god I hate slow burn). MC prods and pries too much instead of straight up asking ML things she wants to know (mostly whether he wanted a concubine), but I guess it makes sense for their context since these people seem to always speak in riddles and traps. But other than that, she's very sweet and sincere. It's not my favorite trait for an MC but it looks good on... more>> her. ML is very considerate and always wants to be there for her despite his very busy schedule.

The Good
Spoiler

Most characters are pretty easy to like. ML's a bit too snobby and taciturn for my tastes but since this is one of those novels where the lovebirds meet early, the feelings are also cultivated much more stably. I've seen some people complain that neither of the characters ever said "I love you" but do note that throughout the novel, they do show affection and love through their actions and words (just not so... directly... it's not dignified to say that sort of stuff. probably also not very romantic to condense such deep emotions into three simple by their standards because these people seem to lOoOOOve long ass flowery language).

MC's maids and permanent momo are also very loyal and sensible. Having recurring characters that don't grate on the bones and nerves really help the reader imo. Two of them were actually sent by Chu Old Furen to influence her but these two were smart (and emotional) and eventually put their entire hearts on MC instead. Since they accompanied MC everyday, they couldn't help but feel biased in favour her because despite being the righteous young miss of the Chang Xing Marquise fu, she wasn't loved by her biological mother and her father was aloof. What's more, her grandmother wasn't too fond of her either and wanted to force her to marry up no matter the implications of her living conditions.

MC's eldest sister (Chu Jin Xian) is especially lovable. At the start, she wasn't too warm to MC but she still treated her fairly and decently. She did her best to guide her instead of solving all her problems personally because she worried that MC would become reliant on her. Later on, she married her older biao cousin and gave birth to a son. Because of MC's longing for her, ML transferred CJX's husband to the capital so she could accompany MC more conveniently. When the chaos of the fall of the border happened, she was living with her son and the pregnant MC in the Western Suburbs. She knew how important MC was and took the initiative to disguise herself as her and told her to run with her son. Fortunately, everyone would end surviving.

[collapse]

The Bad
Spoiler

Sometimes, this novel could be such a drag... That little rat Su Miao was a massive tumour that the author milked for antagonist points. She did s*upid trick after s*upid trick but still kept coming back like it was nothing. She ended up dying eventually but it was still annoying to see. The endings of several characters were also pretty unsatisfying. Empress Xiao Qi built up to be so smart and formidable as to grasp the Emperor's heart and his harem for almost 20 years but in the end, died from poisoning and even garnered the sympathy of her husband. Consort Shu and Su Wang were the same. They were supposed to be the hidden dangers of the harem and court but towards the end, Su Wang was unceremoniously shot to death during ML's rebellion while Consort Shu committed su*cide (i think.... MTL sucks)

The Ugly
Spoiler

You know.... MC's mom is pretty gosh darn s*upid for digging her heart and lungs out for that sewer rodent Su Miao but at most, she was just annoying. The whole Chang Xing Marquise fu was pretty tolerable. Like MC said, it's natural for everyone to exhaust all their means to climb up. Some of the young misses used rather dirty tricks but ultimately, only Su Miao was a rotten one. For the most part, no one was so dumb as to cause trouble after MC became Crown Princess Consort because they knew her living well was equivalent to them living well. Zhao shi and MC's brother made the mistake of taking care of Su Miao but eventually came to their senses when MC and her grandma gave them a hard scolding.

There were plenty of antagonists in the novel, but no one was more annoying that that s*upid Emperor. This man is the most useless pos I've ever seen. His incompetence and mental incapacity baffles me. How this man survived the past 40 years without getting his pecker stuck in a man-eating plant or something, I'll never know. So what if Empress Xiao Qi was a cheap wh*re for what she did when her sister was dying? The Emperor thought his with small little pp and decided it was soooo hot to rawdog his unmarried sister in law at his sick wife's bedside. Appalling. I can't even hate Xiao Qi because of this. All the fault is on him I'm afraid. Also, even if Su Wang colluded with his little psycho friend to get the 300, 000 troops killed at the border, I must say, the Emperor's contribution to this effort shouldn't be overlooked. This man truly is something else. He singlehanded destroyed the bulk of his clan's generations of military personnel. He's so effective at doing nothing and still messing things up. He honestly should've stayed home and stuffed his wanker into a leech's mouth for a quick death instead of going to war and dragging 300, 000 people down with him.

This is probably one of the most realistic CN Novels I've ever read (except for the part about the Jade Pendant, of course). The characters are flawed with justifications and even the main leads fall for the conspiracies underneath and try to overcome them with their own power. Most of the characters don't do anything excessive and the schemes aren't too complicated (the last part is also not complicated, just unexpected by the leads).

I enjoyed watching FL's growth from a timid yet brave girl from the countryside to a gentle... more>> and noble young lady of the mansion and finally to a cold and awe-inspiring crown princess and then empress. Under ML's guidance, she slowly shone like a pearl and rose up to the position. She is not too capable at the beginning and even had to endure all the scheming since she was powerless to do so. For her, the ML in the jade pendant was the only one in the world that would always stand by her side.
Spoiler

Her mom and older brother are biased toward the fake daughter, her dad is always absent, her grandma is calculative and pragmatic, the other girls in the family despise her, and the only one to actually care for her in the family was her older sister. She grew up being beaten and used to the bones by her adopted parents and thankfully, her adopted older sister cared for her.

[collapse]
The first part of her life is just too difficult and she had to quickly learn everything in order to live which distressed me so many times. Watching her become stronger and gain her own confidence and momentum made me feel like I'm a mother watching her daughter grow up. Thankfully, from the beginning, she is extremely smart and could catch on to things quickly, which allowed her to survive the attacks against her initially.

ML is the crown prince and when he was fatally injured in a war, he found himself recovering in FL's jade pendant. Because of what happened in his younger years
Spoiler

Emperor and his aunt had an affair beside his mother's sickbed, which led to his mom dying from anger.

, so he had to marry her as his crown princess and protect her by his side. Initially, after marrying, they were just partners who had to do a married couple's duty. Later on, FL couldn't stop her heart as she has been moved by the ML (even when he was still in the jade pendant) and was even more moved by ML's reassurance and care. ML did not want to admit it at first since he was very hesitant about love but still could not help himself but love and cherish her.

I like how the family, which I expected to cause trouble to FL, ultimately stayed silent and proper. FL's older brother realizes the truth later on while her mother is still grieving for the fake daughter. FL's grandmother may be calculative but she controlled the family well as they know that their glory relies on FL. <<less

It is the third work that I read by this author, and so far, I think it is the most complicated work he has written, I have not yet read the rest of his works, but in terms of drama this story surpasses "I will be the sister-in-law of the male protagonist "and" greetings, ninth guy "where the three works almost advance in the same way, except that the climax is different in each work, letting each play's main character go through three stages and end in a different way,... more>> and As I say, these characters have similarities but it is how they advance that separates them. I really liked how this work progressed, I felt a lot of anger for the type of father-emperor that the Qin yi had, who until the end only hurt him with his incompetence, his easy manipulation through 3rd people who only looked for him for his ambitions and the emperor fell for every lie, despite the fact that the opposite was shown, the emperor insisted on believing the worst in his eldest son. I did not quite understand what happens to the emperor in the end, but as I understand it, I would have liked Qin yi to retaliate by talking to his father, he deserved that, for keeping and enduring so many grievances due to his father's incompetence not to see beyond a pretty face in your haren. As for Chu Jinyao, from chapter 1 she developed excellently, from being a shy peasant with no cultural base, or being illiterate to becoming a high-ranking empress with a dominant ura, the advancement of this author's female protagonists always They are good, I really advise that you read the works of this author although they are not as long and full of drama as other works, this author in less than two hundred chapters makes you feel how complicated the life of his characters is or was. I thank the translators, without you I would not have found this incredible story. <<less

Some of them were nice to the female lead. Everyone has their logical personal reason why acted like that. Not just because author need villainess.

I love it.

I held high expectations but lost interest after a while. It could just be my mood so I left it unrated, but well— I digress. The main premise is that the legitimate daughter (the FL) is schemed upon by rural farmers who replaced her with their daughter. Said daughter lived extravagantly for 13 years while the FL was beaten and overworked. Fortunately, the Marquis (FL’s father) eventually finds out and brings the FL home. The only issue is that it is a bit too late now. The fake daughter has... more>> been fully entrenched in the Marquis Home, leaving no room for the FL. Without the ML guiding the FL, she wouldn’t have been able to gain any foothold in the family. But it’s not that simple, since his soul is only temporary residing in her jade necklace, and the ML himself is anxious to deal with the issues going on at his own home.

The premise interested me in the beginning, but overtime, I got bored. Maybe it’s because of the “she’s not like other girls sentiment” or the boorish scheming of the fake daughter... could also be the inexplicability of the Marquis Family that dote on said fake daughter for seemingly no reason. Whatever the case may be, it’s not what I was expecting. I read and loved some of the author’s other works so I think I may have been misguided LOl. I’ll try and read it again another day and give it an honest rating at that time. <<less

Seriously this is highly recommended!!

It is as angsty and plot-driven as The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage. But you'll still enjoy some sweet and endearing moments now and then. ❤️❤️ Great translation zazajunnie team, kudos!!

As much as I usually like this type of stories with potential for lots of fluff and face-slapping, this one just didn't hit the mark for me. All the problems felt a bit too bland, leads are a little slow to react and drag on the problems too long for the melodrama. Overall, not very satisfactory : (
